It's a good thing the shipping wars participants aren't writing the series. Shallan would end up married to three different guys (each more unlikely than the last--heck, one of them would probably be Drehy), Jasnah would hook up with Vasher, Sebarial would marry Elhokar, and Kaladin would enter into a domestic partnership with the stick. Meanwhile, Moash chats up every chull he meets but keeps striking out/being chased away by annoyed chullhandlers. And Lopen is dating chouta.

I am now shipping all of this! :P

It made Shallan wonder if this spren wasn’t merely trying to understand humankind, but rather searching for something it itself had lost.

Had this creature—in distant, distant time beyond memory—once been human?

I have to say, while this comment is not definitive, it has me feeling that the Unmade are a result of the Heralds breaking is on the right track.  Bear with me for a minute.

We know there are nine unmade, and that they are of Odium.  We are operating under the assumption that they are splinters of Odium, unless there is a WOB out there that explicitly states that they are splinters of Odium himself.

We also can assume that the Heralds are not strictly human, though they may have started that way.  They are essentially immortal, and come back from death eventually - and bear magnificent artifacts crafted to grant power.  Kinda like friendly Nazgul.

So if we assume that there have only been nine desolations (unconfirmed), and each one resulted from a different Herald breaking under torture (also unconfirmed), what if the unmade are made by odium, so of odium, but are in fact splinters of the Heralds?  What if they are the things that were broken off of the Heralds as they caved under torture?

That would account for the sense of loss, and feeling of having been once human.  That would allow for the number to have been fixed at nine, and allow us to match one Unmade to each Herald.  It also fits with the Herald's being broken, and each having madness.  Re-Shepnir being Shallash's missing piece.  The Death Rattle Unmade would fit with the Truthwatcher, etc?

What if each of these giant, dark spren came into being as Odium Unmade each of the Heralds in turn?

Quote

People sang about Re-Shephir in poetry and epics, describing her as a dark, beautiful figure. Paintings depicted her as a black-clad woman with red eyes and a sultry gaze.

More, ancient depictions of Re-Shepnir were of a beautiful woman, dark clad and sultry.  Compare this to the end paper painting of Shallash.  Which is complementary to this description, yet opposed.

It proves nothing.  I could still well be wrong.  But this info about Re-Shepnir does not disprove me, and it would seem to support that thought.

Thoughts:

Chapter 31 was one of the most intense chapters we've seen yet, I think. Kal's defending the humans was particularly poignant.

Chapter 32 made me want to scream. Brandon keeps throwing things at the beginning that I expected later in the book. I thought for sure that Part 2 was going to have some Jasnah scenes of her journey from the end of WoR to Urithiru, but no, she appears in the last few words of Part 1. (Facepalm).

I think I'm going to go silent on here until after I've read Oathbringer. To avoid potentially putting my foot in my mouth and because the last 32 chapters have made me realize I really have to finish the Wheel of Time (second read-through) and go back through WoK and WoR before I tackle OB.

Sounds like Shallan is a female Rand Al-Thor. Same hair color even. Wouldn't that be hilarious?

Because this was during the highstorm, we are not really sure how much stormlight it took to fuel this power.  I wonder if Kaladin could carry enough gems to fuel this outside a storm.  I'm guessing no.  That means that if something needs to be accomplished that requires a lot of stormlight -- it best be done during a highstorm. So I don't think we will be lucky enough to see this again for awhile because of the sheer amount of stormlight it required.

Perhaps not at his current level, but there's pretty good evidence that with each new ideal the Radiant uses stormlight more efficiently and perhaps can hold more as well. I'm guessing that at some point he'll be able to do it without the storm.

Well, there is already speculation that the Stormform Voidbringers could be the Windrunner equivalent, which would mean that the Fused in the today's chapter would be of a different order.

I actually hadn't seen, or I had forgotten about, that theory. It would make sense since Windrunners were really the first presented KR order. What's interesting is that the Stormform VB didn't have gravitation, so maybe the Fused only share one surge with an KR order, and the other powers are something else.

The Wheel of Time was the reason Brandon originally got into writing...

Are you in America? If so, I wouldn't bother. Stores try to adhere to actual release dates. Your best bet would be to check stores that are not book stores but would still carry one of the most anticipated books of the year because they're more likely to not be paying attention (you know, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.), but the chances are still very slim. It's also possible that a delivery truck will take a curve too fast and a box of Oathbringer copies will tumble out to land at our feet. That is only a little less likely than you finding the one store in thousands that accidentally messed up the release date.

After the end of this part, I'm picturing Pattern doing something like this to Jasnah:

"Hmmm, you died, yet you are here."  He paused.  "What a wonderful lie you are!"

Mission accepted. I will spend the rest of the week following UPS and Fedex trucks around town.

Even better, Jasnah and Shallan conspire to do away with Mraize.

That will be quite the twist.

I think this is more likely than Shallan agreeing to do the opposite. I don't think that Shallan is really interested in doing the Ghostbloods bidding, at least not intentionally.

Heh yeah. I saw my copy today. The bookstore is closing so I wanted to make sure it was coming in. It's there. They won't sell it.

So much pain walking out of that store.

That's not how we work in America. In America, we bribe. You should discretely offer the kid stocking the shelves $500 cash if he can meet you with a copy behind the store. Go to enough bookstores, and you'll probably find someone shady enough to deal.

Note: I don't actually recommend doing this. It's wrong. Wait a week like the rest of us poor unfortunate souls.

Thinking out of my head the next possibility - Mraize asks Shallan to kill Jasnah. Boom!

This always seemed to me the place Shallan's WOR storyline was heading. It's a pity nobody will think that there's any chance that she will really kill her.

As long as we are talking about mutually consented binding. I don't want any of my friends engaging in void binding!
