Steeldancer he/him Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 That looks hard core. Still like the American cover best. It's so pretty.

Draginon he/him Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 Those Polish covers wouldn't look out of place on a high fantasy/dark fantasy game like the recent Mordor LOTR games and Dragon Age. In other news I'm going up to Frisco tomorrow to the Lego store there to grab some sets. My main buy is going to be the 5 sets for Lego Dimensions (Beetlejuice, the Powerpuff Girls and the Teen Titans) and try getting something from Lego Ninjago Movie. Might also pick up a couple Sanderson's at B&N while I'm up there.
Ammanas Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 So I have seen a phrase online (not on the shard) a few times over the past month and was wondering if anyone knows the origin and when this started to be a thing. The phrase is, "I slay you with truth!". Usually people put a "Boom!"in front of it.
Draginon he/him Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 My haul today. Didn't quite make it to B&N since I was going to go check out the B&N restaurant... except it's not finished with construction! When I first heard of it on the radio or news they were talking about it like it was open! So no new Sanderson books for now. My Lego haul. The poly bag was a free gift purchase and the poster was for buying anything Ninjago. Close up of the poster. Cant wait to start building! 2

Also if someone drew a stick figure for a cover and labeled it "Jasnah" does that immediately qualify it as the best cover? The third reason is Jasnah's depiction, pose, and presence on the cover are in, my opinion, forced unto us by people that had other things in mind than the most natural and best fitting character and landscape. That being said I don't really want to get into it after seeing @maxal (hopefully I am remembering the right sharder) get crucified on this site for expressing similar opinions. Orlion Blight he/him Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 @Ammanas Nah, I think I can out controversy you. I personally don't think the Polish Covers on any of the Sanderson books are that good... let alone good enough to prefer them over other covers!

I've already come to the conclusion that not everyone will agree with me on things and I am ok with that; this epiphany has saved me so much stress, headaches, and pointless conversations.

That being said I don't really want to get into it after seeing @maxal (hopefully I am remembering the right sharder) get crucified on this site for expressing similar opinions. Sorry if my response was to a rhetorical question...its hard to tell on the Internet sometimes. 1) The cover of a book isn't always a perfect depiction of a scene, but it should give you an idea of something about the book. Not spoil major plot points, but show you something cool that you can expect to see. While Jasnah may not be the central character of Oathbringer, it's reasonable to expect that her return is going to be a Big Deal, and this reinforces that. Plus, she's just looking completely badchull there. It's not just that it's Jasnah, it's Jasnah being awesome. 2) I actually like the Polish covers for Mistborn Era 2. They're lovely. So it's not a matter of style so much (though I do like both of the American cover artists' work in general) as this particular cover is just so...generic. It's a stark contrast of content when you compare the Mistborn covers with the Oathbringer one. 3) I guess that's supposed to be Dalinar? In...armor? Maybe Shardplate? But if it's Shardplate, it's either completely inaccurate for what the book should contain or it's a major spoiler for the growth of his relationship with the Stormfather. The former strikes me as lazy, and the latter is a cardinal sin for a book cover. 4) Yes, I'll admit, I find Dalinar to be a lot less interesting than Shallan or Jasnah. He's sort of...there. Driving the plot along and having his moments of existential angst, but not really capturing my interest that much. So yeah, I'd rather see Jasnah on a cover than Dalinar, because she's a much more interesting character to me.
Orlion Blight he/him Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 I agree with @Kaymyth on one point: the covers are very generic fantasy genre fare. "Let's show a character or two with a background that kinda captures the mood of the book! " *rolls eyes* To be sure, the American covers do the exact same thing, which is why I said there's no reason to prefer the Polish versions over the American ones. But there is a reason to prefer the American Stormlight covers! Whelan is just waaaay better with the background landscape. It's actually a shame he probably is contractually obligated to feature characters prominently. If the landscapes were the focus, there would be no contest!

(Alcatraz and Reckoners are with different publishers) The first two also have some random knight whose weapon and sword are nothing like Shards. It's not supposed to be Dalinar if you want my opinion. Edited September 19, 2017 by Overstorm
Orlion Blight he/him Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 @Overstorm To be sure, it's not bad, but it really is not so different from the American cover: namely, it features an Asianish woman on the cover. Beyond that, it almost comes down to if you prefer a crisper image or whatever style the original is in.
