Edgedancer he/him Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 (edited) @Quiver You forgot the Deadpool event Til Death Do Us... (Though that one is only cross several series and not seperate book.) Edited February 16, 2017 by Edgedancer
Orlion Blight he/him Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 @Quiver What about Monsters Unleashed, which is bloody fantastic! Honestly, I'm more peeved at DC's slow burn with the Rebirth deal. Marvel's events are mostly localized to certain series and you get one Big Ol' Event which you have to know about. I've ignored the Inhumans X-Men kerfuffle and am perfectly fine just following what I have been purchasing.

I find DC's books more interesting these days, and the slow burn helps with that. It actually feels like there is an epic plan at work. Whether that succeeds, other story. But Marvel is just racing from event to event without even letting the dust settle.

I dunno, seeing how Rebirth came with an entire new status quo, I'm willing to take it going slow over them stumbling to whatever the deal is. In a sense giving the individual series/characters room to grow is much more important than the greater plan right now. As for marvel, true most of their stuff is more in the Bat-family crossover league. How much that effects you mostly depends on what books you're reading. I find their approach with the MU books interesting though, making the tie-ins seperate books from the ongoings. On the one hand, that means the title isn't interrupted, on the other it means more money to spend to get everything. Not sure how much the "only one big event in a year" argument goes though. Even not counting the tail end of CWII, we got one big one in MU, looking at the Teaser, Generations also won't be confinced to just one sub set of characters and Secret Empire will definetly be a big deal. While the actual impact on status quo remains to be seen for the first two, that's closer to one a season than one a year. Edited February 16, 2017 by Edgedancer

Quiver he/him Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 Um, so... I pitched this thing to some people in PMs. Was wondering what people thought in general, if that's okay? Okay, this is... this is fanfiction. But I enjoy taking stuff I hate and making it better and honestly, Suicide Squad was pretty bad. I don't think there is any one reason for the badness, either; that movie died the death of a thousand cuts. But I was watching a video by a comic guy (Professor Thorgi), and listening to stuff, and I had an idea on how it could have been done better, and I suppose I want validation as to whether or not my ideas are terrible Remember how one of the points made against Superman in Dawn of Justice was that he didn't recognize borders? Like, he just flew into a place to help people, regardless of where it was in the world, and how people were concerned about that? Use that. At the start of the film, establish a nation in this universe. Use one of the fictional ones from DC's stable; Khandaq, or Biyalia or something. You can tie it into the opening desert shots of Dawn of Justice too if you really want to. Anyway, establish this nation. And more importanly, establish the geopolitical situation with it; that it's a dictatorship, which holds anti-West and anti-democratic views. Make it clear that this is a pretty terrible place, but that the political situation is such that no one really wants to -or can- take action against it. Then, one day, the sky above it tears open. Jets and drones are dispatched, are shot down by something. But intelligence starts to get through to central command; a group of extremists uncovered and awoken an ancient figure from their cultural mythology. It could be the Enchantress; it could be Queen Bee, or Black Adam, or whoever the film needs it's big bad to be. (I'd lean towards Black Adam, actually, since he fits the "Evil Superman" analogy of the original Suicide Squad script better than anyone, other than maybe bringing Zod back to life again.) Anyway, this character is now wrecking the place, and it's clear that the local government has lost control of the situation. But they continue to insist that they do not need, or require, foreign intervention, it's all fine here, everything is fine. How are you? ...Anyway... Into this situation steps Amanda Waller. They can't send the military into Biyaliadhaq because that would be viewed as an aggressive action by other countries. Same for covertly dispatching an elite unit. But, she happens to have a group of disposable assets, a group known as Task Force X. So, the Suicide Squad is dispatched to the conflict zone. Action ensues. One of the set pieces is set in, or around, a nuclear power plant, and you can have Deadshot wrly point out that "No wonder they didn't want someone else in here"; part of the negotiations and trade deals with the nation invovle them not pursuing nuclear power, but it's clear they've been doing so for a long time. By the time the Squad reaches the big bad of the film... the country is a mess. The villain has been cutting their way through the military and the government like a knife through hot butter. The Squad takes the big bad down, and gets extracted, and go home for a well deserved rest... ... But back at mission command, Flagg confronts Waller over the situation. There were little things about the mission that didn't add up, from it's oddly fortuitous timing, to the nature of the threat itself, to the fact that Waller just so happened to have the perfect team for the job*. Waller doesn't even try to brush it off. She knows Flagg is a good and dedicated soldier who will agree with her. She's the one who leaked the information that led to the Enchantress/Queen Bee/Black Adam's rebirth. She outlines the whole situation: that she knew that extremist groups within the country would seize on the opportunity to bring such a powerful cultural figure into the modern day. She also calculated that the resurectee wouldn't be pleased with not being in charge anymore, so they would embark on a campaign against the local government. The Suicide Squad took the villain down... but not before he thoroughly destabilized a hostile enemy nation. A hostile enemy nation which is now being held responsible for nearly ending the world. An enemy nation which has been exposed for harboring nuclear technology they weren't supposed to have, whose leadership has had their hearts cut out, and who is no longer a threat to national security. The bigwigs and generals at Washington don't know the above, obviously. What they know is that Waller promised them an anti-Superman task force... and delivered on dealing with a Superman-level threat. America is being lauded as tehe heroes who saved the world, since they were at the forefront of the military that (offically) neutralized the enemy combatant. They are already exploring the possibilities of using the Squad in high-danger zones. In short, Amanda Waller? Is one hell of a magnificent bastard chessmaster. * In my re-write, it would also be made clear that the Squad weren't just picked at random. The common sentiment among fans is that Batman can beat Superman; well, none of the individual Squad members are up to Batman's all-around excellance, but they all excell in specific ways that are supposed to counter that. Basically, physically, the point is that they are a team of Batman. But, they are also chosen for psychological reasons. Deadshot obviously cares about his kid, so he's incarcerated with Harley Quinn, causing him to imprint on her as a surrogate daughter. Similarly, Harley has an established history of fixating unhealthily on male figures, so Deadshot becomes her "new" Joker. The fact that no one cares or treats Croc any differently because of his appearance helps soothe his misanthropy some, giving him a vested reason to make sure the team -and, consequently, the world- isn't wiped out. That little family bond helps persuade El Diablo to intervene and protect them, for the same reason. Flagg is a charismatic figure with enough skeletons in his closet to understand the importance of the Squad, meaning he can be trusted to lead them and not shirk the dirtier work that might involve. Katana has loyalty to him as a fellow warrior, but she's also not the type of person who will bond with the members of the Squad itself, seeing them as common, un-righteous criminals; so, if she believes they are going to jeopardize the mission, she won't hesitate to detonating the bombs in their necks. ...Thoughts? 6
