It should be noted that a lot of fiction attempts to facilitate conversation, not to actually present an argument or viewpoint. There are some of the later, but they usually end up being garbage.

So I finally got around to watching Zootopia with my kids. I have to say, with all the "best Disney movie EVAR" reviews I was expecting better. I mean it was pretty good, but I didn't find it as impressive as most people I guess.

One big problem I had with it it the not so subtle racism theme being fatally flawed by the setting and environment of the movie itself. I looked up some reviews and yup, some people saw the same problem I did.

http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/03/03/zootopia-review-a-muddled-mess-of-racial-messaging...-and-cute-animals

Fitting excerpt:

Yeahhhh, pretty universal complaint about Zootopia.  Oddly, if it was Pixar, they would have come up with a brilliant way of handling it.

I see a similar problem with superhero or fantasy stories where some characters innately have immense powers, but it's treated as though they're regular humans who need/don't need to be regulated.  Sorry, everyone, Magneto is right.  If there are superhumans, human society can't contain them.  Try giving Dr. Manhattan clear guidelines on when his powers are and are not to be used.  He'll probably look ahead into the future and see the benefit of letting you feel better about it, but you have no more authority over him than a cat does over a human.

That would probably have been the best way to approach the issue - not framed as a parallel for race at all.  Fantastical rules can't handle detail in allegory.

There are always multiple levels of meaning to stories. You can take it simply as a cute animal story and simultaneously critique it's mix of biology/racial issues. Or both. Or neither.

I agree. It's not like a representative from Disney has come up and said "Zootopia is an allegory for racism! This is the only way the story can be interpreted." Sure, it's the easiest way to look at it, but allegory is not the same as applicability (there's a great quote by Tolkien about that). There's too many angles to see it from to pin it to one.

Even if a Disney exec DID say that, there would be people who decided to watch it against the grain and/or see how many more messages they could mine from it. Probably BECAUSE they were told not to.

That's my issue with Marvel's Civil War. I mean, you can make your Accords and "regulate" the supers, but the only ones really able to enforce it are any supers you convince to. If they don't want to, they won't.

You guys make it sound like that's not how it happens with regular laws ;)

Please. If something like that had ever actually happened, it probably would've involved an ill-advised constitutional amendment that, I don't know, banned alcohol or something.

One of my favorite things I've learned from reading a biography of Hamilton is how much his father-in-law loved him. It's ridiculous. There's one thing the guy wrote to his daughter Eliza (Hamilton's future wife) that at first I thought was Eliza writing to him. He called him "my beloved Hamilton" and said "He affords me happiness to exquisite for expression."

Usually when a couple decides to get married after only a month of courtship you expect their parents to be shocked and reluctant, but honestly Philip Schuyler was probably the one who suggested it. "Okay, you love him? GREAT! We'll have the wedding tomorrow." *throws rose petals everywhere*

This is even better when you think about the fact that Schuyler was a super status-conscious near-aristocrat and Hamilton was an penniless, illegitimate kid from the West Indies.

MUWHAHAHAHA, you know how you guys made new Random Stuff topics after 100 pages?

The new site has more posts per page, thus making all your efforts in that regard dooooooooomed!

(Uh... I have slept just one hour... Maybe I should go to bed.)

The mobile version looks great, doom or no. (I haven't seen the regular version, so I can't comment on that yet.)

Hero of Ages spoilers:

...is this what it felt like to come out of the kandra caves and see the new Scadrial as Harmony recreated it?

Yes! I personally keep rolling over the buttons on the navbar.

(But Kobold, you don't need to put empty line spaces in between paragraphs anymore :D )

Have any reputation titles changed with the update? I know that some people spent a fair amount of time collecting stuff about that :P

Edit: I would follow Joe ST of course.

I don't see there's much choice there, trolling is a /necessary/ outcome

Guys help. I've attracted an Edward Cullen mosquito. I'm trying to sleep and it's just hanging around watching me, making me vaguely itchy......

You could always lure it into biting you, kill it, and take Benadryl to keep the itching away....

hmmmm....wonder if there's another lure you could try, like sugar water or something....

I might start editing people's to remove the extra spacing as I see them

I know I said I was going to bed but holy crap, it's soooo nice to browse on the mobile site. Some experiences you just don't quite get when you are on a test site.

You go to sleep right now! We don't want you to press a wrong button and splinter the 17th Shard ;)
