Jo and the Bush all/any Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I have started watching Doctor Who, and i'm starting to understand why it's so wildly liked. It's ridiculous. I've only watched three Episodes, the first three of season 9, where I was recommended to start, and I've already seen a mannequin pretending to be a real boy, a garbage bin eat a man, a tree-woman burst into flame needlessly, and Charles Dickens committing Arson and Genocide. And they're way to casual about death. I think over half of the people I've seen on screen have died already. 2
DreamEternal Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 (edited) Today this terrible and enlightening revelation fell upon my mind in its full abstract glory, while I was doing a calculus test: You are only doing it right if after staring long enough at the numbers and formulae, you feel things staring back. If I had choosen the path of a mathematician, I am sure I would be able to hear them whisper by now. EDIT: no, I am not on drugs, and I am also not that sleep deprived. I've just found the truth. Jo and the Bush all/any Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 Well, now I want to copy/paste that into Chaos's AMA and see if he can tell us what the whisperers are saying.
DreamEternal Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 Well, now I want to copy/paste that into Chaos's AMA and see if he can tell us what the whisperers are saying. Don't. There is a reason so many great mathematicians were less than stable.
Oversleep Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 Today this terrible and enlightening revelation fell upon my mind in its full abstract glory, while I was doing a calculus test: You are only doing it right if after staring long enough at the numbers and formulae, you feel things staring back. If I had choosen the path of a mathematician, I am sure I would be able to hear them whisper by now. EDIT: no, I am not on drugs, and I am also not that sleep deprived. I've just found the truth. Well, I've never felt them staring back at me, but sometimes I see. I see the pattern. It's like... back in school some of non-mathematical friends were asking us how we never need the delta equation when we're solving square equations. That's because we saw the answer on the fly. The fact that once our teacher made us solve about one hundred square equations in succession may have something to do with this I guess good chess players can take a one look at the board and understand it. Without much thinking, just see and understand. (In bridge I sometimes had that too). It's something I am long way from achieving in Tak. I need to play more.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I can't be getting sick. I don't have any paid leave saved up yet.
Kaymyth she/her Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 Today I signed up to give blood next week. This will probably not go well. I'm an idiot. Well, now I want to copy/paste that into Chaos's AMA and see if he can tell us what the whisperers are saying. Well, he does pop into this thread now and then. He might just answer anyway. I can't be getting sick. I don't have any paid leave saved up yet. Noooo! Vitamin C and zinc! Neti pot! Meds!
Sunbird she/her Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I can't be getting sick. I don't have any paid leave saved up yet. My mom the pharmacist-in-training recommends Echinacea (an herbal supplement) to boost your immune system. I hope you feel better ASAP! Also, Buffy: "Earshot" is another really funny one that you ought to be getting to soon. And just wait until you get to the season 3 finale... One of my favorite scenes is in it--but not for funny. (I forget whether it's part 1 or part 2 though.) I have started watching Doctor Who, and i'm starting to understand why it's so wildly liked. Things Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have in common: cult followings, monsters, robots, and ridiculously high onscreen death tolls over the life of the show. And hilarious quotes, of course. Also, both shows have spinoffs, as well as "those episodes we pretend don't exist because they're so bad." There's not many of them, but they exist. Oh, and Anthony Stewart Head.
Mailliw73 he/him Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I just watched Memento and uh, wow. I knew Christopher Nolan was good, but storms, this one was great.

My mom the pharmacist-in-training recommends Echinacea (an herbal supplement) to boost your immune system. I hope you feel better ASAP! I'm feeling less miserable than I did last night, so that's something. I grabbed an entire bag of cough drops and took one of those vitamin C supplement things—the ones that you stir into water and it tastes vaguely like fruit? One of those. The Tylenol is making my throat feel less sore, too, so I'll take some of that with me when I leave. Hopefully, I won't have to interact with the public too much today. And, I know this question will probably receive a "yes, why are you even asking" answer, but….should Pulp Fiction go on my list of Things Twi's Parents Banned that Must Be Watched ASAP?
Quiver he/him Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I'm going to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 this evening. The snark bait. It will be glorious.

Yes, why are you even asking?I like Tarantino in general and I rarely watch films. I also thought of another clock analogy this morning! Twimom is like a slightly glitchy digital clock: sometimes showing symbols vaguely resembling the correct time. 2
Kobold King he/him Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 Hey everybody. The family and I are trying to figure out where to go for the next theater outing; we've got it narrowed down between X-Men: Apocalypse and Warcraft. Any thoughts or alternative suggestions?

I've heard if you are a fan of Warcraft you'll like the movie.X-Men Apocalypse was all right. You could probably flip a coin and not worry about choosing wrong.

The Invested Beard Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I highly recommend his magician drama The Prestige. Agreed. That one's my favorite.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 Ah, I just love overly pedantic Tropers erasing my edits. Rowling's mention of the "Great Sasquatch Rebellion" WAS full of Critical Research Failures and it does SO belong on that page.

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 Now we see the violence inherent in the system! And they were snooty in their explanation, too. Hmph. I'll bet they liked that disaster of an article series. (Yes, I'm being a bit childish. This editor just really annoyed me, okay?)

Actually...my response to this is, "meh". But I'm pretty hit and miss with Tarantino. I really liked Kill Bill pts 1 and 2, but detested From Dusk Till Dawn. Pulp Fiction was just kinda dumb. It doesn't help that Tarantino himself is kind of a chullhead.

Tarantino's fascination with racial slurs is annoying, and lately his films have gotten bizarrely fascistic. Reservoir Dogs is solid. Pulp Fiction's worth a watch, but meh. I haven't seen Jackie Brown, but the occasional film nut has told me it's his best. Kill Bill hasn't aged well, but if you haven't seen much kung fu, wuxia, or Shaw Brothers films, it's a good intro. Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, and Django Unchained are all garbage. Haven't bothered with Hateful Eight.
Chaos he/him Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I saw Warcraft last night. It was solidly pretty good and I enjoyed it a lot. It absolutely does not deserve its Rotten Tomatoes score. People comparing it to Battlefield Earth are utterly full of crap and being dramatic. It was fun. There are laughs. It isn't the next Lord of the Rings and obviously isn't trying to be. Other reviews called it derivative. Yeah, uh, Warcraft 1 was derivative about 30 years ago. But still, the only thing derivative about Warcraft is that there are traditional fantasy races in it. The plot is totally different. Anyway, Warcraft was solid. I would recommend. I don't have too much knowledge of Warcraft lore. I just play Hearthstone. Never played WoW. I did play some Warcraft 3, whose lore is great, and sometimes went on the wiki. I don't think you need much at all of a background to enjoy the movie. They did a good job. 2

I played a lot of Warcraft II back in the day. I enjoyed clicking on the background sheep until they said, "Baa raa mew" and exploded. Yes, the sheep explode if you click on them too much. It's fantastic. 4
