Guess who has a younger sister on the shard:D I'd like to introduce @Wiggs to ya'll, she joined this afternoon. She's been a sanderfan for a long time and we decided it was time to get her introduced to the shard:) She's got her intro thread and will probably be popping up in other places when she has time.

Welcome to the Shard, @Wiggs! @Left, you must be the best kind of brother to have introduced your sister to Sanderson and the Shard. =)

In other news, bird nesting season is in full swing in Utah! I went out last Monday (Memorial Day--I had the day off of work) and got lots of photos of baby robins, among other things. ^-^

Baby robins in the nest:

Spoiler

With mom or dad delivering food:

3 babies waiting impatiently for another food delivery:

Young robins that had already left the nest:

Downy Woodpecker nest hole:

Spoiler

Baby woodpecker (male--you can tell by the red on his head) sticking his head out of the hole and peeping incessantly to be fed.

Daddy woodpecker returning to the hole to feed his noisy offspring.

Bullock's Oriole nest:

Spoiler

The female oriole was weaving the nest as I watched. She's actually inside the basket in this photo; you can just barely see her yellow-orange tail sticking out the right side.

This is why thrift stores are awesome -- $30, $24 with my employee discount, and it would've been $19 if I'd remembered the coupon in my pocket. :P It's covered in rust and dust and probably needs a few other repairs, but it's beautiful.

So yesterday I posted in the Bad Day thread about being miserably sick.... I'm happy to report that I seem to be over it. I'm pretty certain I brought yesterday's misery on myself by eating a yogurt that was past its expiration date with my dinner on Monday. Word of advice: don't take risks when it comes to eating or drinking dairy products you're not 100% sure are safe. I paid dearly for it.

I got to spend my first day of summer(hooray) cleaning out trash cans and doing inventory, because I got a detention on the last day. Yet, for some reason, I don't feel to mad. It was good to do some real work, and I scavenged some candy from lockers.

What did you get that detention for? What kind of mischief were you up to?

Eh, at least you didn't hit the dean :P could be worse.

Ha! The one time I got detention, I got it... for reading in class. Oh the things that I have had happen to me because of reading in class. Books across the room, books confiscated, and detention. Lol

Haven't quite gotten detention for it, but so many of my books have gotten confiscated. Teachers dislike my reading habits

I was always allowed to read in my literature class, otherwise I would "spoil" the text during class discussion.

Classic example: when discussing Beowulf, the assigned reading only went up to past Grendel's defeat. A co-student critiqued that Beowulf was uninteresting because he was invincible. I responded that that wasn't the case because Beowulf ends up being killed by a dragon.

I wasn't allowed to participate in class discussions henceforth :)

That is exactly what I do! One time my science teacher banned me from reading anything but the text book. My response: I'VE ALREADY READ IT 5 TIMES

I have some duck photos to share :D

(Yes, that's a bird, not just a splash where someone threw a rock in :P)

Duck 2, which I found really interesting because it's complete inky black:

In this third photo, you can see the duck's nictitating membrane or "third eyelid," which protects birds' eyeballs from flying debris or harsh wind while still allowing them to see.

A pair of Mallards:

Female on the left, male on the right.

Red-breasted Merganser, female (also a type of duck even though "duck" isn't part of the species name):

Er, what? Sorry.... Especially since it seems like the sort of thing I'd find amusing if I understood the reference.

Poirot. Miss Lemon is his secrectary, and she uses a typewriter. She types really fast in the tv series.

On the topic of reading in class, I remember that in elementary school, I'd read books all the time instead of paying attention in class or actually do the assignments. I remember one time in fourth grade, my teacher came over and had to take my book because I was reading it too much. She even emailed my parents about it, saying she felt bad for having to punish me for reading.

I eventually (mostly) stopped this habit in middle school, and definitely by high school.

Ah. :P Thanks!

Oh, also re: the whole reading in class thing? I used to do that all the time in elementary. In fact, my 2nd grade teacher, at the end of the year, gave me the So-Absorbed-In-A-Book-The-Teacher-Had-To-Shout-To-Get-My-Attention award.

Oh, I forgot to post this yesterday because I was so tired, but mini band camp started yesterday. Pretty much, it goes from 9 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon (with about a 45 minute lunch break) of almost non-stop marching and/or playing. It's so fun, even though it's rough, especially because I haven't done anything this physically active since the end of last year's marching season (around mid-November). Also, we got to hear the music (midi version) of our ENTIRE show for this year. That almost never happens. We also got the music for the entire show as well. We usually only get the opener and the ballad (first and second movements, respectively), and then when we get to summer band in August, the ballad usually has some revisions and then we get the closer. I can't believe we already have the entire show basically, even though the closer is likely to be a little different come August.

I am kind of sad I didn't make drum major or even any leadership position, but I just gotta prove myself this year, and hopefully make it next year, my senior year.
