Abruptly, Starseeker whirled around to face one of the piles of rubble. He could sense someone there, someone with the Second Heightening. He didn't say anything though.

Cayansa blinked. Is he being sarcastic? they asked Reyx. 

You're asking me? Reyx grumbled. My conversations flow like a brick wall.

"Lux," the boy added, apparently in answer to the question of names. "Why?"

"I was taught it was like polite to ask people their names. Honestly, I'm not sure why either," they mused, "As the entire concept is nonsensical. Ah yes, a random set of letters that will be everyone's main connection to you, that when said, will cause them to picture you! And then someone decided different groups of people would have different kinds of names that aren't even that different, and the whole thing becomes one convoluted mess!" They grinned.

"But last year? It has only been about a month since I left Roshar." Starseeker said.

"... When did you leave Roshar?" Cayansa asked him, but Starseeker whipped around, staring intensely at a pile of rubble.

There's someone powerful there, Reyx told Cayansa, who arrived a few minutes ago. Friend or foe?

Does everyone not have the potential for both?

"An explosion, little one," Kai said, walking towards a warehouse with the Fused. "He's not a demon, Lux. Just a different type of person." Kai looked at Cayansa as he added, "And not an enemy."

They nodded, grateful for the reassurance. "Is there anything specific we could do to help, or should we keep looking for now?"

"Time moves differently here, Starseeker. It might have been a month for you since you left Roshar, but a year passed before I came here. Then it was less than ten days before Cayansa got here since I left, and yet been a full year for me. How long have you been here..." He trailed off as he noticed Starseeker whip around to look at something across the crater. Reyx was directing their sheen that way too. 

"Cayansa, did Reyx notice anything over there?" His tone sharpened, and he sent a mental message to Skye. 

"Skye! There might be someone dangerous here. Ask Jerrin if he knows Perses whereabouts."

"Skye!" Kai's thought popped into her mind. "There might be someone dangerous here. Ask Jerrin if he knows Perses whereabouts."

She paused as she listed then asked, "And Jerrin, do you know if Perses has been up to anything recently, or if he's out and about?"

Perses, New Hallandren, Crater

Perses took in the mess of new information. So, Ebon got himself in trouble and is trying to play it off. Such deception was something Perses had experience with, when he was less well known. Given the trajectory Perses hoped Ebon would be heading, he suspected such trickery wouldn't work for much longer. Yet with three radiants around him, Perses certainly didn't blame Ebon for bluffing. With all of his power, even Perses might struggle to take on three radiants, at least if he wasn't able to employ the help of Belias.

As more people began looking elsewhere, and not directly at the crater, Perses grew tense. While his breath aura wouldn't be out of place in New Hallandren, a man in all black standing atop a rooftop would be. Are there any of your Alleyways nearby? Perses asked Belias. While Belias had managed to intercept Perses mid Alleywalk before, it was much easier if Perses could walk through an Alleyway that was directly connected to Belias' domain. Luckily, as Belias' strength grew, so did his domain, and therefore so did the number of Alleyways that fell in his domain. 

There is one that has just recently opened about two blocks to your right, Belias messaged. Alleyways are highly volatile, and one could never know when they would close. However, they tend to stick around for a bit once they've been opened. Perses didn't plan on immediately heading out. He didn't care if he was seen, just that he had a viable escape route for if he did need to make an escape.

Instead, he turned on his bronzesense. Over the past year, Perses had gotten much better at identifying the use of radiant surges, which would give him an advantage if the radiants did plan on pulling anything. For now, there was still more information to be gleaned from this situation.

Little worldbuilding dump for you newbies: The Alleyverse has the standard three realms, that being the physical, cognitive, and spiritual (technically more, such as the Nowhere), but it also has a third realm: the Alleys. 

The Alleys is a separate dimension, created from the chaotic magic of this dimension as Voidus molded it. The Alleys act sort of like a twisted mix of the cognitive and spiritual, with a variety of incredibly powerful and dangerous beings that exist in the ever changing realm. However, these Alleybeings are unable to escape the Alleys, but prey upon those that enter the Alleys.

The Alleys, due to its nature, constantly create portals that lead to it. These are referred to as Alleyways, and they can appear in just about any alley across the multiverse. These Alleyways work differently depending on whether they open within the physical realm of the Alleyverse or in the physical realm outside the Alleyverse. Outside the Alleyverse, they are much more sparse, with the Alleyways acting as relatively safe, direct portals to other Alleyways on Alleyplanet. These are how most people actually get to Alleycity. 

However, Alleyways work much differently within the Alleyverse. Instead of being a safe method of travel between Alleyplanet and other universes, these Alleyways typically send you straight to a part of the Alleys. These Alleyways appear much more frequently, and are understandably much more dangerous. Not all alleys have these Alleyways, but any alley could have an Alleyway. And given that these Alleyways are incredibly volatile and incredibly dangerous, most denizens of Alleyplanet avoid going into alleys unless absolutely necessary, as there's always a chance of entering into a nightmarish plane of existence and be unable to escape it.

However, if you're trained in navigating the Alleys, or have a method of safe travel through the Alleys, Alleyways can be used for incredibly efficient transportation throughout Alleycity and Alleyplanet as a whole.

Now, Perses gained the attention of Belias, a very powerful alleybeing, after being more or less tortured in Wickwillow Manor (something you can read about if you are interested in the thread The Price of Power--Perses' Descent). Belias, being roughly the power of a shardic avatar (think stormfather or Patji), has created and expanded his own stable domain within the Alleys. This area, which he has sole control over within the Alleys, is what he lets Perses use to travel across the Alleys. Not all Alleyways lead into Belias' domain, but  Belias is aware of those that do when they form. I will be planning to RP what its like in Belias' domain (minus what it actually looks like due to Perses being blind), as well as what Wickwillow Manor has turned into in the past year, so stay tuned for that.

"An explosion, little one," Kai said, walking towards a warehouse with the Fused. "He's not a demon, Lux. Just a different type of person." Kai looked at Cayansa as he added, "And not an enemy."

They nodded, grateful for the reassurance. "Is there anything specific we could do to help, or should we keep looking for now?"

That was certainly concerning news, though he doubted it had anything to do with his own problems. Still, he did his best to help when Kaiden needed it. He just hoped this was important. This would take a lot of speed.

“No,” said Jerrin. “I haven’t heard anything in particular.” However, if Kaiden suspected Perses had something to with the event, that could mean this was more serious than Jerrin thought.

"I got here yesterday," Starseeker said in response to Kai. "Is there some kind of organised police here?" he asked.

Jerrin turned the corner onto Brass Street and skidded to a stop in front of the police station there. He entered, nodding stiffly to the constables on duty. "Just here to fetch something for the Radiant," he muttered.

Making his way into one of the rear rooms of the station, he found a set of filing cabinets. As he made his way across the room, Jerrin observed his future shadows as they inspected the various cabinets in front of him. One pulled out a small pouch. Perfect.

Jerrin emerged from the station, tucking the pouch into his belt. The trip had so far consumed about half the speed in one of his bracers. He switched to the other one as he began the run towards New Hallandren. He preferred to keep them equally filled when possible, as keeping them partially full allowed them greater resistance to other forms of Investiture. It was a slight advantage, but Jerrin took every advantage he could get.

It wasn't hard to find his way to the scene of the explosion. The streets were clogged with panicked civilians trying to figure out what was happening. The chaos pointed him towards his destination. Following his future shadows, Jerrin dodged around pedestrians, narrowly avoiding collisions.

He slowed to a stop as he came to a large ring of people surrounding a massive crater. Rust and Ruin! he thought. I know Skye said it was bad but I didn't think...

Jerrin made his way slowly through the crowd. Electrum allowed him to slip through the mass of bodies, finding gaps before they opened. He reached the front of the onlookers, getting a better view of the devastation. Kaiden stood near the crater, along with several other people, including what looked to be a Fused.

Not wanting to draw attention to himself, Jerrin hung back. He preferred to stay under the radar and would rather not reveal any association with Radiants in public. Instead, he tossed the Voidlight spheres towards the group and quickly turned around, disappearing into the crowd.

"Kind of." Kai answered Starseeker. He Stepped back out from the shelter where Ebon was, still keeping an eye out where Starseeker had been looking. "There is in most of the Scadrian districts anyway, the Smokestack and the Mistwarrens. I've helped out there a bunch. I'd gotten the impression that Radiants did most of the policing of the Sphere, the Rosharin district, but I haven't been there much. Why do you ask?"

"Kai!" Skye flew back over to him. "Jerrin dropped off the Voidlight over there." She pointed at the edge of the crater a couple meters away. 

"Good." He trotted over and picked up the pouch. "I assume he knows that things are likely to get messy in the next few days." He sighed, looking out at the milling, panicked people, and the destruction past the crater. "Remind me to give him that Unkeyed steelmind we pulled off that guy we brought in a week ago. I know it won't have much speed, but..." 

 

He slipped back into Ebon's hiding spot. "Here's that Voidlight I promised you. About 6 marks worth. I've got to go help with crowd control, so I'll be back in a bit." 

 

"Cayansa!" He jogged over to them. "You're doing great. Just keep pulling people out from rubble as best you can, I'll try to get the rest of them to calm down." He gave them a quick salute and stepped into the middle of one of the main streets leading off from the crater. 

He took a deep breath and summoned his plate, making it big and tall, even taller than normal. "Everybody! Stop moving!" He shouted. No one listened, and they all kept milling around, panicking.

Growling, he summoned Skye as her natural giant Shardblade, blunted, and slammed it into the ground, bellowing, "STOP!" a wave of wind and stormlight blasted out from him and frost formed on the edges of rubble and people's clothes. Science spread over that street.

I mean, any alley has a decent chance of containing an Alleyway. I don’t know the exact odds, but it really boils down to if it’s narratively satisfying to have one there or not. Perses is vaguely aware of one at this time, but there’s probably others that lead to other places of the Alleys.

Perses took in the mess of new information. So, Ebon got himself in trouble and is trying to play it off. Such deception was something Perses had experience with, when he was less well known. Luckily, as Belias' strength grew, so did his domain, and therefore so did the number of Alleyways that fell in his domain. 

There is one that has just recently opened about two blocks to your right, Belias messaged. Alleyways are highly volatile, and one could never know when they would close. However, they tend to stick around for a bit once they've been opened. Perses didn't plan on immediately heading out. He didn't care if he was seen, just that he had a viable escape route for if he did need to make an escape.

Instead, he turned on his bronzesense. Over the past year, Perses had gotten much better at identifying the use of radiant surges, which would give him an advantage if the radiants did plan on pulling anything. For now, there was still more information to be gleaned from this situation.

Cayansa, New Hallandren, Crater 

"Time moves differently here, Starseeker," Kai was saying. "It might have been a month for you since you left Roshar, but a year passed before I came here. Then it was less than ten days before Cayansa got here since I left, and yet been a full year for me. How long have you been here..."

He trailed off, watching Starseeker whip around and peer in the same direction as Reyx. "Cayansa, did Reyx notice anything over there?" he said sharply. 

"Uh. No." Reyx said, glimmering nervously. "Not anymore."

"So, yes," Cayansa translated. "There was someone, but they're gone now, whoever they were."

Starseeker began asking about the policing that took place, and Cayansa wandered off a little way, finding another pair of injured people - one a youngish woman who light seemed to split around slightly, one a teenage boy who seemed muted, like a monochrome painting. Cayansa briefly explained what the healing fabrial did - well, briefly for them, at any rate - and was helping them to their feet when Kai ran over to them. "Cayansa! You're doing great. Just keep pulling people out from rubble as best you can, I'll try to get the rest of them to calm down."

With that, he made a brief gesture that was probably a salute of sorts and dashed off again. Cayansa cautiously walked over to where they could here someone calling for help and gesturing to a pile of rubble. "There's someone trapped under there."

"I have a healing fabrial!" Cayansa called, pushing their way forward. "Can someone help me get them out?"

"STOP!" Kai yelled suddenly, and a wave of cold and quiet was thrown over the street. The frost still comes, Cayansa noted absently, starting to shift concrete. Another constant. Nothing's constant here. Or anywhere, for that matter. 

They turned their focus back to their task.

I know it won't have much speed, but..." 

 

He slipped back into Ebon's hiding spot. "Here's that Voidlight I promised you. About 6 marks worth. I've got to go help with crowd control, so I'll be back in a bit." 

 

"Cayansa!" He jogged over to them. "You're doing great. Just keep pulling people out from rubble as best you can, I'll try to get the rest of them to calm down." He gave them a quick salute and stepped into the middle of one of the main streets leading off from the crater. 

He took a deep breath and summoned his plate, making it big and tall, even taller than normal. "Everybody! Stop moving!" He shouted. No one listened, and they all kept milling around, panicking.

Growling, he summoned Skye as her natural giant Shardblade, blunted, and slammed it into the ground, bellowing, "STOP!" a wave of wind and stormlight blasted out from him and frost formed on the edges of rubble and people's clothes. Science spread over that street.

Nearby, Kai and Starseeker finished a conversation in low voices, and Starseeker headed off to a pile of rubble, which he focused on intensely. Soulcasting, probably, Reyx mused. 

Cayansa grunted in acknowledgement as they pulled at an unyielding block of concrete. Some people were directing the newly-not-injured away from the crater, but few bystanders were doing anything at all. Their fabrial had ran out of Light a few minutes ago, but one of the locals - a particularly colourful one, almost radiant, in the conventional sense of the word, or perhaps unconventional nowadays - had done something, and now there was yet another unfamiliar kind of Light in the gems. 

How can you think about that? Cayansa thought. People are stuck here. Get someone to help. Ask that Lux kid if he can help with the rubble removal. Storms, ask anyone! They gritted their teeth, and the stone came free. Someone was huddled under a table inside, fortunately safe from the falling debris. Sorry. Just... not used to being on the frontlines.

Reyx flew over to Lux and hovered next to him, noting the Cryptic on his arm. "Hello. Um. Are you any good at Soulcasting? The rubble needs clearing. Uh. Could you help with that? Maybe?"

"I... I can try." Lux says, walking over to the rubble, and focusing.

Hs mind... popped into another realm. It felt... unnatural, and like he was looking somewhere, not directly there. He looked at the rubble, now... something else. That didn't matter, all that mattered was changing it.

Lux focused on the rubble. Rubble The rubble said, I am rubble. Rocks. Fallen. But something was off. I was just a wall. Now I am rubble. 

Lux focused, before replying, Yes, you were a wall. Now you have fallen. Would you like to fly? Fly through the air, linger on the ground, you can be free. You can be smoke.

Wall... Rubble...

You are in a state change. Why not push it further? You can be free.

Smoke? But Rubble...

Smoke. You can be smoke. You can fly, be free. You can free those trapped under you that previously wished to protect.

Smoke.

As Lux's vision faded back to reality, he saw the rubble dissolve into smoke.

Unnatural, how the walls were forced to be rubble like that. The emergency forced them into something else... You are getting better, Lux.
