She didn't slow down as she reached the makeshift "Town Hall"—a repurposed warehouse reinforced with rusted sheet metal. She burst through the heavy oak doors, a cloud of cold mist clinging to her orange hair like a halo. She was still swallowing the last dry lump of her waffle, nearly choking as she began to speak before her lungs had fully recovered. "My apologies for the temporal discrepancy, Mr. Mayor," she chirped, her voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. She didn't wait for a greeting. She was already at his desk, leaning forward at a precarious forty-five-degree angle. "I was waylaid by a fascinating auditory data point regarding illegal cargo at the docks. Did you know the resonant frequency of a wooden crate being dragged over Elendel cobblestones is markedly different from the sound it makes on Mistwarren grit? It’s a compelling variable for your district's logistics reports." The Mayor of the Mistwarrens, a man whose face looked like a map of every bad decision made in the slums, stared at her with a mixture of exhaustion and genuine alarm. He opened his mouth to bark a reprimand, but Cricket was already moving. She began burning Tin. Suddenly, the dim room flared into high definition. She could see the individual pores on the Mayor's nose, the slight tremor in his left pinky finger, and the faint, sweet scent of cheap gin masking the sour smell of stress sweat. She could hear the frantic scratching of a clerk’s pen three rooms away and the heavy, rhythmic heartbeat of the guard standing behind her. "You're breathing at twenty-two inhalations per minute, Mr. Mayor," she observed, her hazel eyes darting across his face like a hummingbird. "High for a sedentary position. Are you experiencing a cardiovascular event, or are you currently engaged in intentional obfuscation regarding the Survivorist cell I’m here to discuss? Because honestly, the latter is much more useful for my encyclopedia." "Alstom," the Mayor growled, slamming a meaty hand onto the desk. "You’re twenty minutes late, you smell like a bakery, and you’re currently violating three city ordinances regarding the interrogation of public officials." "Social hierarchies are such a fascinating, if inefficient, barrier to data acquisition," she replied, completely oblivious to his rising anger. She reached back and absentmindedly fingered the scar at the base of her neck. As she did, she began storing the exact layout of the papers on his desk—including a partially covered map of the sewers—into her Copper spike. "Don't touch that," the Mayor warned, noticing her hand near her neck. He, like many in the district, had heard rumors about the 'spiked girl' and found it unnerving. "It’s just an archive, Mr. Mayor. Efficient, if invasive," she said dismissively. She tapped her Chromium metalmind, a tiny spark of Fortune flowing into her. I need him to be cooperative, she thought. At that exact moment, the heavy door behind her creaked open. A young messenger, looking terrified, stumbled in. "Sir! The Constabulary... they’ve just detoured to the North End. The path to the 'safe house' you mentioned is clear for the next hour." Cricket’s eyes lit up with a terrifying, effervescent glow. "A clear path? What a remarkable stroke of luck! That must be where my Survivorist is hiding." She turned back to the Mayor, her satchel already swinging as she prepared to bolt. "Thank you for the data, Mr. Mayor! Our 'study group' session was most productive. I’ll send you a transcript once I’ve cross-referenced it with the extremist's testimony!" Before the Mayor could even stand up to stop her, Cricket was a blur of orange hair and leather straps, disappearing back into the mists with a relentless, forward-leaning urgency. Perses, The Mistwarrens, Main Street Perses emerged from an Alleyway. He intended to meet an old friend in the warrens, but he would make a quick stop first. The Mistwarrens had changed significantly in a year’s time. While many of the streets were still crumbling with rotting, dilapidated buildings, there was something Perses was still getting used to permeating the streets of the warrens: construction was underway. The Mistwarrens had long existed as this group of separate slums operating on the edges of multiple districts across Alleycity. With a high Scadrian population, these slums were kept untouched by the nearby districts, allowing crime and delinquency to run rampant. Last year, Perses had worked to eliminate the main gangs preying on the warrens, and made sure that the districts knew that the Mistwarrens were not theirs anymore, not that they ever truly claimed responsibility for them. In the past year, the warrens were being claimed not by organized crime, but by entrepreneurs and capitalists, seizing this opportunity to build the Mistwarrens into a district in its own right, not a representation of all the failures of this chaotic city. Yet the people of the warrens resisted this change. The people that lived here, if it could be called that, were set in their ways. Crime still ran rampant, just not in anything organized. New gangs tried to form, but were afraid of following the gates of their predecessors. To this day, there was only one person that truly ruled the Mistwarrens, and that person was Perses. Perses slammed open the door to the mayor’s office, with his leather and bone mistcoat writhing behind him. The chatter of the room fell silent, and the members of the room gave Perses a wide berth. Partially this was to avoid the sharpened bone blades at the ends of the mistcoat’s tassels, but much of it was Perses himself. At this point, everyone knew not to get in the Prince of the Alleys’ way. The self proclaimed mayor of the Mistwarrens rose to his feet, lips trembling. “A-ah! P-P-Perses! What a p-p-pleasant surprise!” The man stammered, trying, and miserably failing, to put on a friendly affectation. “What brings—what brings you here?” The room was deathly silent, with an ordinary person hearing only the breathing of the people staring at Perses. Perses however was no ordinary person. With his hearingminds tapped, he heard not only the heartbeats of everyone in the room, and the sound of air filling and leaving their lungs, but also the movement of their bowels, and the sound of every subtle movement of their bodies as they swayed or adjusted their postures. It was frankly maddening. Instead, Perses stopped tapping his hearing and began tapping his bronzesense. There was a smoker in the building, but with a bit more effort, Perses broke through the cloud. Soon, a set of two rhythms washed over him. First, the rhythmic pulsing of the smoker, who was making Perses waste more of his bronzesense-mind. The second was emanating from the mayor, who was attempting to soothe Perses’ impatience. “Can you stop trying to mess with my emotions? You know that’s a stupid idea.” The mayor sucked in some air, and Perses felt the pulsing of brass dissipate. “S-sorry sir,” the man stammered. “Force of habit.” “As for your question,” Perses said, “I was simply checking in on your progress with the construction efforts. I’ve been noticing things haven’t been going as…quickly as I would have expected.” The mayor shakily went to adjust the cuffs on his suit, clearly a movement made to comfort himself. “We are working as efficiently as we can, lord. There have just been some c-complications. Nothing we can’t fix, though!” He added hastily. “Well, it seems you have everything under control, then!” Perses said with a fake grin. “Let me know if that changes. As you know, I’m here to help.” As he uttered the final word, Perses made a mock bow to the mayor. Such a gesture would have been beneath him a year ago, yet he had found that false subservience often ended up having a more powerful effect than simply standing there. the mayor bowed towards Perses, rather pitifully. “O-of course, lord,” he uttered, making sure to not lose eye contact with Perses’ spikes, gruesomely driven through his eyes. “We know where to find you.” With that, Perses turned around and left, dropping a coin and shooting into the air.

The sun had just begun its daily crossing of the sky, and he made no effort to hide. He couldn’t have, even if he’d wanted to; while by now, most had heard in some way or form of the Husked One sleeping in the streets of New Fadrex, the crowd still parted around him with a mix of fear and wonder. Then again, the rumors likely weren’t in his favor. The wooden boards of the bar’s entrance creaked under Ebon’s weight, yet there was no chatter in the establishment to go silent. Huh. Normally Ebon had to wait until after his arrival for them to all clear out. Not that he had visited any Alleyverse bars yet. But this was where Perses wished to meet, and in his current state, Ebon was happy to oblige. Sure enough, as he pushed open the door, Ebon found Perses sitting lone in a table in the corner. The man was classy as usual, shredded cloak - what was it they called it? - waving in a hardly-there wind, sipping a cup of tea. As Ebon walked over, he caught the distressed glance of the bartender, who upon catching his eye, resumed washing mugs like her life depended on it. Carefully, Ebon pulled out a chair for himself and sat across from Perses. He was dimly aware of the pair of obsidian knives at his waist; an ambush was not a possibility he was yet ready to rule out. ”Hello.” One Year Later Present Day Ebonaryle, New Hallandren, Externally Unassuming Warehouse Basement Ebon grunted as he cleanly pulled out the obsidian knife, and the Awakener’s body fell to the ground with a slight thump. He inspected the blade for a second, watching the blood slowly pool in its nooks and crannies and spill off at the edges, before using it to hack away at the ropes wrapped around his torso. Annoying little rusts, those Nalthians. This was the third he’d dealt with today, and while his tough hide resisted most damage, he’d definitely feel the sores for a long time. And he only had a single jump left, a fact he made sure to take note of. He couldn’t afford to be careless, not today. A loud bang sounded nearby, and Ebon returned his attention to his surroundings. The last of the rope fell limp at his feet. Another bang, and the smell of smoke began to reach him. Rusts. He knew exactly what that meant. The Crimson Breath had been unable to stop him from breaking into the lab. So now, they were destroying the evidence. A third bang, and Ebon began to move down the dimly lit corridor, a slow walk at first turning into a run as he got closer and closer to his target. He wasn’t worried about more foes; research centers like this one - hidden in tunnel complexes beneath abandoned warehouses - tended to be lightly defended; this was the toughest one he’d found yet, and he was pretty sure they’d thrown all they had at him in the lobby. All they had wasn’t enough to kill one of Odium‘s greatest warriors. The memories of those Desolations - and even darker times, that world of fire and pain - still rung in his head. Worst of all, the knowledge that he had spent thousands of years fighting the wrong battle. But that was all behind him now. In the past year in the Alleycity, his eyes had been opened. Opened to a world he had never known could exist. Yet after all this time, he was still chasing the same bastards. Bang. Sure enough, as Ebon turned the corner to burst into the flaming lab, all he was met with was a halfhearted ambush by a single scientist armed with a gun he clearly wasn’t experienced enough to use. He got off one shot that bounced off Ebon’s carapace before the Fused lifted him off the ground and crushed his head in his hand. The warm blood trickled through Ebon’s fingers, spared no remorse nor compassion. He had never been the sentimental type. As the remains hit the ground, he heard a whimper from across the room. Immediately, his head snapped just in time to see a face duck behind a counter. Ebon growled, fingering his dagger, and slowly began to pace towards the counter. As he crossed the room, flames lapping in futility at his legs, he spared quick glances at the piles of papers burning all around him. He had been so close this time - but still too late. Always too late. He’d still look through it anyway, scouring for anything that could lead him closer to the heart of the Crimson Breath and the research they had taken from him all those months ago - once he was done with this one distraction. With each step that brought him closer, the whimpering grew a little louder. Ebon almost felt bad for what he was going to do to this man. In a clean motion, Ebon leapt the counter and landed in a crouched position, prepared for an ambush or desperate fleeing. He was met with neither. The thin figure huddled against the wall didn’t even hold a pistol; merely a small, white box, his hand curled around a red lever at its top. Ebon’s instinct was to rush and kill, but something within him caused him to hesitate. Before him, the scientist trembled heavily. His whimpers grew, and his face was wet with tears. He was utterly terrified. So why wasn’t he running? The man looked at Ebon, but didn’t seem to see him. He just shook his head, face twisted in an expression of pain. Slowly, Ebon lowered his knife. For the first time, he was aware of the desperate beat of his heart in his chest. He spread his arms wide, and began to take a step forward- and the scientist shut his eyes tight, face twisted one final time, before pulling the lever. The last thing Ebon saw before entering his last jump was a brilliant white light, consuming everything. Boom. … The sound of the explosion was heard from the Sphere to the Cauldron. The epicenter was vaporized instantly. The surrounding area was a little luckier - much of the mostly abandoned block blown to pieces, destruction spreading far and wide. Those close enough could see the flames of the detonation rising dozens of meters into the sky - the smoke seeming to stain the clouds. @KaladinsSenseOfHumourSpren Quote I believe you are in New Hallandren.

I have been told that the Mistwarrens, where I have spent most of my time till now, are worse than other places; but on the other hand, I was jumped and someone tried to mug me five minutes after I arrived here. I then spent most of a year helping a police officer, so I've gotten accustomed to being wary." He took a bite of chouta. " No, I didn't come here with anyone, so far as I know. Just me and Skye. It sounds like we got away lightly with the Alleys, Cayansa mused, decisively ignoring Reyx as they took another bite of chouta. The ones we stuck to were mostly safe. "A police officer?" they asked Kai. "How do they work here? Is it closer to Azir or Alethkar in terms of paperwork?" An ear-splitting crack, like the earth being sundered, rebounded around the street. A faint light flashed in the sky, presumably brighter nearer the source, and the entire street felt as though it was shaking - or perhaps that was just Cayansa. "What was that?" they coughed, squinting at the afterimage of a sky that had seemed, for a moment, the opposite of light. Quote @KnightSkye Reforged I don't mind what happens from here; if you want to investigate the explosion or keep looking for Radiants. I thought Cayansa should acknowledge the sound though.

@KaladinsSenseOfHumourSpren Quote IDK the geography of the Alleyverse but I assume this is going to effect everyone. If they took the base of the heatrial, and they had... yes, there was a heliodor, and a topaz, both with a little Light. They stripped out the gems it used to hold, changing in the infused ones. This was familiar, this was understandable. There was so much no one understood about fabrials, true, but they'd seen these ones built and taken apart what seemed like more times than they'd seen the three moons rise. Having made something that might resemble a healing fabrial - not that they could test without someone being injured - they turned to the painrials, swapping out the gems for ones with more Light. There wasn't anything else they could do for now with so little metal, so they gathered up the remaining spheres in a pouch and left them by the side for Kai to use. The flying box was remarkable; it was much quicker to assemble than a large floating platform. Storming marvellous as that had been, it took a veritable army of Radiants to operate, yet one of these could carry several people per Windrunner. Cayansa couldn't help but grin. KnightSkye Reforged They/Them Posted January 4 Posted January 4 5 minutes ago, Ink and Embers said: Cayansa, a large crater, New Hallandren "Okay. Good. Sorry, I don't know much about fabrials," Kai said, sealing up the box. Moments later, Cayansa's stomach lurched as they took off, everything sliding to the back with them. They pulled out their notebook and drew a diagram of the box as they flew. ___________ The box landed and unfolded, revealing a large crater. "Hey, you ready?" Kai asked. "Got anything that needs to be infused?" Cayansa shook their head. "No, there are some spare spheres if you need the Light." They handed the pouch to Kai. "Go look for any injured, and see what you can do," he said. "I'm sending Skye with you, if you need her, shout and I think I can get her to form a shield as long as your within 80 meters. Maybe. Maybe not, we'll see. See if you can find your friend too, Reyx. Make sure they're ok, got it? Go!" Kai gestured them away, before turning to a figure across the crater and shouting, "Hey! Do you need help?" Cayansa screamed for a second, then clamped their hand over their mouth. There was a Fused a little way away. Just ... standing there! By the crater! "What are they doing?" Cayansa asked Skye. "What is Kai doing?" They scrambled backwards, then took a couple of hesitant steps forwards again. They couldn't just leave Kai there. They couldn't exactly fight, either. "Skye and Kai have been here for a while," a voice next to Cayansa's ear said, sounding like crackling. Cayansa spun to face its source: a hovering ball of glinting glass and light. "Reyx!" they exclaimed. "You're alive." "More than can be said for a lot of the people who were here a few minutes ago," Reyx said mournfully, "This area wasn't empty. There are a few people nearby who are wounded; I was reassuring them help was coming." "I'm that predictable?" "Yes. It's a mysterious explosion, and then the friendly spren ran off. Now you're here." Reyx shifted to look at Skye, meaning most of their light was reflected in her direction. "And as you and Kai are Windrunners, it makes sense you'd come. There was another person here, a few minutes ago, but they vanished. As in, literally vanished. I think they might be in Shadesmar." Cayansa nodded. "Strange Fused, strange Shadesmar person, injured people. I made a healing fabrial, I think. I'll do what I can." Cayansa starts skirting the crater, looking for wounded.
