"Not the best sleep, then?" asked Sigismund.

"Ah, my favorite robot. How are the others? We took a brief detour, but we should be rejoining the group." The wizard glanced at the man behind them.

“I am no robot. I am an agent of the Cloud, a member of a highly advanced civilization. And I have a consciousness.”

He looked around Sigismund, at the man.

”Where are Jidah and Lati?” Asked 209845, worried but in a completely serious tone. Something in its voice implied this was not the time to get on its bad side.

I nod to the wizard talking to the robot.

"I really did miss a lot," Sigismund said. "I thought we were fighting against the Cloud? I guess it doesn't matter. Jidah and Lati are just behind us."

". . . Make more pain?"

“Because I can’t… I can’t be afraid of it.” She still clutched her hand. The pain hadn’t gone away— it was getting worse.

I wave back with a reserved movement.

Just behind them…

209845 shoved it’s way past Sigismund and walked up to the elderly man. He had been oddly silent so far, and its patience was waning. It prepared its zapping tool.

”You. Who are you? Where are my friends?” My friends… yes, Jidah and Lati were friends. The conclusion seemed to warm something inside of 209845. It should never have pushed them away.

“I do. But I’m mortal now. Being a mortal IS pain.”

"Oh. So . . . why do you want more, then?"

“So I can learn to function as a mortal! It’s just until- just until I get my power back.”

"Well . . . don't you have your power? Just not enough to make you immortal . . ."

She inspected Jidah's hand.

"Can't you fix it like you fixed Rhyme?"

“Yeah. I can. I could.” She stared at it. She didn’t want to.

“I can’t be weak.”
