Finally. 209845 turned back to Owen and Rhyme, who were waiting, and began to lead the way up the stairs. The stairway was steep and the walls engraved with patterns of ancient heiroglyphs; as they passed, 209845 made sure to record the symbols in its personal database to review later.

Eventually, the stairs emerged into a medium-sized, ornately furnished (for an ancient ruin) room. The room, which appeared to be some sort of lobby, also had doors leading to other passageways. On the other side of the room from where the group was standing was a large hole in the wall which seemed to overlook a far larger cavern, mostly obscured from the party’s current position. From beyond the window, in the large cavern, seemed to glow a faint, ghostly light.

209845 began to explore the room. In the center was a large stone block, likely a table of some sort. The walls were covered in small alcoves; as 209845 approached one, it noticed, hidden among the vines and dirt, what appeared to be an ancient totem of some sort depicting a man with the head of an axolotl. Fascinating.

209845 turned back to the room as a whole; this had most likely been a room for a religious figure to prepare before greeting the crowd in the temple. This would be a good place to rest.

Only one thing was left. 209845 turned and began to approach the window…

He seemed unbothered. "I wouldn't do that. You overestimate your strength."

"You should listen to him, Jidah," Sigismund said with concern. He did not want this to turn violent. "This man means no harm to us. Might I ask your name?"

Rhyme grinned and started inspecting the totem. "Woah..."

209845 reacted instantly, rushing between her and the totem. “Careful!” It said, then relaxed a little. “We don’t know how old these artifacts are. They’re priceless, and we definitely don’t want to damage them.”

Owen stared blankly around. "I . . . need some time. For myself."

209845 nodded, then turned back to what it was doing. It walked up to the window and looked out… and it’s pulse skipped a beat. The window overlooked a massive cavern, whose walls were as tall as a dozen tree trunks. The window 209845 was looking out of was roughly the thirds of the way up, giving it a perfect view of the thousands upon thousands of viruses that filled the space.

The viruses seemed to blanket the entire floor of the cavern, which was as large as a small lake. And hanging in the air, in the center of the cavern, emanating the odd glow was what appeared to be a rift in reality itself.

The rift took the form of a long gash hanging in the air. The edges of the rift were hard to delineate, but it was massive and seemed to pulse in iridescent light. What was happening here, in these caverns, was far greater than 209845 ever expected.

"Priceless? So they're worth nothing?"

209845 turned back to her, deadpan. It sighed, then turned back to the window while half-muttering a response. “You know what I mean…”

“That’s a lot of viruses,” she noted.

“It is. In fact, it’s more than we expected in this area. You see that?” 209845 nodded at the rift. “THAT’S what the Cloud fears. When too many viruses gather in an area, such as this, their combined essence creates a Rift that connects the physical realm and the Web. Once the Rift gets big enough, the Web begins to leak out of it and change the structure of reality. This Rift isn’t quite there yet; but it will be soon.” It looked down, thinking. “Normally, the Cloud can detect emerging Rifts to neutralize them. This one must have been hidden by all the dirt and rocks…”

Suddenly, 209845 was interrupted by a rapid beeping sound in its head. Jidah’s cookie had gone dark. It took a quick look around.

”Wait,” it said then assessed the situation. Yes, the Jidah appeared to be unconscious, but still alive. Good. It needed to get to her quickly, though. She still had a place in 209845’s plans. It returned its attention to the others. “Jidah’s in trouble. I’m going to go find her. Stay here, and do not draw attention to yourselves.“ It turned to Rhyme. “And DON’T touch anything.”

"What's so bad about having a Rift?" Rhyme asked. "And hey, I'm going with you!"

209845 turned around, already beginning to head back down the stairs. It prepared itself to argue, then reconsidered. “To answer your first question; when the Web and reality are mixed in this way, both are altered severely. On this end, that means physics being broken, reality coming apart, and massive casualties. The leak continues to expand until it envelopes the whole world, and everything is destroyed, replaced by an endless well of chaos and matter floating in limbo. On the other end…” it left that sentence unfinished.

209845 then promptly turned and resumed its descent of the stairs. After a couple steps, it turned back around. “Well? Are you coming?”

"Wow... sounds wonderful," she said, grinning. "Just imagine... no gravity..."

She hurried to catch up.

He vowed his head, glowing slightly.

209845 waited until they were out of sight of the main group, taking the opportunity to check again on Jidah’s location, then turned to Rhyme.

”So,” it said. “What exactly is your business? Of all the members of the party here, you appear to be the least normal. And you’re sudden appearance, right in the middle of our group, soon before a rebooting but claiming to know nothing of it, was no accident. What is your business here?”

Where exactly is this happening? Cause right now the party is split up in some subterranean tunnel-ruins.
