209845 didn't want to hurt the man... but the conversation DID have to move away. They were making noise, and it was only a matter of time before something found them. Perhaps they could knock him unconscious and interrogate him later...

He didn't seem bothered by the threat. "I raised them. I know them. Tell me, how do you believe you are are in the right?"

She got ready.

That was it. 209845 made its decision. This conversation was not getting anywhere. Time to shake things up…

Lati! Now!

209845 prepared itself. Once Lati shocked the man, it would strike.

Oop!

Lati flew over and enveloped the man. His flesh (or whatever he was made of in case it's something else) began to sizzle and melt away at a very rapid rate and in a very painful way.

As soon as the action was taken, 209845 suddenly lunged forward with superhuman speed and moved to tackle the man.

"What?!" Sigismund yelled. "What are you doing to him? Get off him!" My plan is falling apart, he thought. I didn't want to have to backstab my companions, but I want to follow this man back to where he came from, and if they're getting in the way of that...

He hesitated, then drew his sword, and charged 209845.

"What?" Lati cried, scared she'd done something wrong. She removed herself from the man.

@Hoid Slayer

209845’s instant reflexes immediately detected Sigismund’s movement, and it leapt out of the way just in time to avoid the blade… not that it would have done much.

”You fool! If this man walks away, he could warn the Cloud of our location. We need to question him somewhere safe!”

No!

No, Lati! You’re doing great! Sigismund is just… confused. Do you think you can knock the man out?

"How do we know he's with the Cloud?" Sigismund asked. He steadied himself and kept his sword at his side, looking around to make sure no one else came after the man he was trying to defend.

Genuinely though, what is 209845's justification for attacking him? What does he want to know?

You all got a bit ahead of yourselves. He is not remotely defenseless. And if you recall, he can see her.

As soon as she moved, the old man turned and looked right at her. As she flew at him, the intricate details on his metal cane lit up bright white, and she found herself unable to touch him. It was like he was surrounded by an invisible shell right beyond his skin. Wherever she touched it, the barrier crackled and gave off glowing sparks.

The old man pursed his lips, looking disappointed. "That was a bad choice."

Lati was extremely confused.

But she'd already gotten off him, anyway.

Officially, it wants to protect 17 and is scared that the more time passes, the greater the chance someone finds them. But also, it’s just really on edge right now and prone to rash behavior.

209845 turned its attention back to the man, moving unnaturally fast, almost as if it was teleporting, and tackled him to the ground.

Take care of Sigismund! At least until this man is neutralized.

Who else could help?

”Jidah! Rhyme! Help me out!”

The man was knocked to the ground, but the shell around him affected 209845 too. It felt solid, and it crackled and sparked, sending powerful shocks through the antivirus.

Sigismund raised his arm, and a bolt of lightning, not necessarily lethal, but strong enough to stun, shot out towards 209845. "I'm sorry. Hopefully we can still be friends after this."

What… what WAS this? Some sort of shield, protecting the man. A shield that could somehow stop an agent of the Cloud itself. Who are these people?…

But maybe… 209845 raised its arm and zapped the shell with all its might, transmitting ripples down the Web.

The lightning bolt pierces straight through 209845, whose void-flesh appears to part to make way for it. The bolt continues to hit the wall behind it, and instants later, the parts of 209845 repare themselves as though nothing had happened.

There's no way I can beat 209845, but it's not like that's what I'm trying to do. Sigismund had no doubt in his mind that the strange man could fend for himself, so he hesitated, then ran down the hallway towards the others. I'm going to bring 17 to this man, who will have assuredly fought off his attackers by the time I return. Then, I'll follow him back to wherever he came from, to see what he's really up to.

The zap hit the shield, causing an explosion of light and white hot sparks that showered the room, briefly burning where they touched skin.

The old man stood up with the help of his still glowing cane. He still seemed unexpectedly calm. "Very hasty... You caused an impact that will be detected many miles away. Weren't you trying to hide in these caves?"

209845 watched the wizard go, but didn’t follow. It had bigger concerns to deal with.

209845 looked down in shock. All that, and this man was still standing like nothing had happened? Clearly, 209845 was not winning this fight. It was time to change tactics… an idea came into its mind.

”The Cloud won’t know it’s me. The whole Web of this planet is cracking already; what’s a little more?”

As they talked, 209845 released a pulse, mimicking something it knew instinctively. A real beacon.
