209845 watched the wizard go, but didn’t follow. It had bigger concerns to deal with.

209845 looked down in shock. All that, and this man was still standing like nothing had happened? Clearly, 209845 was not winning this fight. It was time to change tactics… an idea came into its mind.

”The Cloud won’t know it’s me. The whole Web of this planet is cracking already; what’s a little more?”

As they talked, 209845 released a pulse, mimicking something it knew instinctively. A real beacon.

He narrowed his eyes. "Now, what was that you just did?"

In response to the man’s question, a howl sounded nearby. The another, from the opposite direction. And another. In seconds, they would be here. Yes, it was a good thing that the viruses were camped so close by.

209845 smiled despite its faceless features. “I just let all hell break loose.”

Just as the man finished his sentence, a massive form tackled him from behind. The virus slashed at the man’s shield, trying to pierce it. Another leapt at him from the side. As more and more viruses arrived, 209845 channeled them towards the man with a distinct vibration, identifying him as the target. It was so much easier to speak the viruses’ language when it didn’t have a compulsive program holding it back. The communication came naturally, almost uncannily, and 209845 took a step towards the man. It felt confident. It felt right.

”Maybe. But at least I can figure it out.”

The man went down under the onslaught, but none of the attacks truly seemed to harm him. The viruses kept getting shocked and blasted back by the shield. He fought them off with the cane, too, each hit casting light and sparks and damaging the attackers.

Spirit frowned. “This, I think, seems decidedly evil.”

He raised a hand and a burst of darkness tinged blue extended from it, tearing apart the viruses near him.

He had, in fact, been following in the shadows, unseen and unknown.

Sigismund raised his arm, and a bolt of lightning, not necessarily lethal, but strong enough to stun, shot out towards 209845. "I'm sorry. Hopefully we can still be friends after this."

57 minutes ago, Hoid Slayer said:

What… what WAS this? Some sort of shield, protecting the man. A shield that could somehow stop an agent of the Cloud itself. Who are these people?…

But maybe… 209845 raised its arm and zapped the shell with all its might, transmitting ripples down the Web.

The lightning bolt pierces straight through 209845, whose void-flesh appears to part to make way for it. The bolt continues to hit the wall behind it, and instants later, the parts of 209845 repare themselves as though nothing had happened.

There's no way I can beat 209845, but it's not like that's what I'm trying to do. Sigismund had no doubt in his mind that the strange man could fend for himself, so he hesitated, then ran down the hallway towards the others. I'm going to bring 17 to this man, who will have assuredly fought off his attackers by the time I return. Then, I'll follow him back to wherever he came from, to see what he's really up to.

The old man stood up with the help of his still glowing cane. He still seemed unexpectedly calm. "Very hasty... You caused an impact that will be detected many miles away. Weren't you trying to hide in these caves?"

Sigismund jumped when he saw them. What in heaven's name? The viruses ignored him, but that didn't stop him from shuddering profusely. The viruses were among the only things that could end him, that is, actually kill him. They didn't follow the rules. They didn't have to listen to his clock. If they wanted to, they could kill him, no matter what the clock face said. And that... that terrified him. He stopped to catch his breath, just outside the temple. Then, he waved his arms, turned invisible, and went inside.

He walked past his companions and stopped next to 17, who couldn't see him in his invisible state. "17," he whispered, low enough so that no one else could hear. "Do you want to return to your Maker?"
