“Perfect,” said 209845. “Our friend is down this passageway; why don’t you tell us your story on the way?”

Without hesitation, it moved to lead the way. Jidah was still out there. It could only hope they weren’t too late.

Sigsimund continued walking down the tunnel. "Look up ahead!" he shouted. "That must be the temple!"

"W-wait!" Lati called.

A beep sounded. Jidah was awake. 209845 felt a surge of relief, but did not slow its pace. Just around this bend…

209845 made the turn to find itself face to face with Sigismund. The wizard looked tired, and approaching slowly behind him was an old man with a calm expression on his face. Jidah and Lati were nowhere to be seen. Behind 209845, Spirit and Rhyme made the turn at a slower pace.

"Ah, my favorite robot. How are the others? We took a brief detour, but we should be rejoining the group." The wizard glanced at the man behind them.

Jidah kicked it again, noting the jarring sensation in her foot. Was this how mortals always felt? Weak and vulnerable and downright miserable? Why did they even bother?
