Fenna felt a spike of annoyance at Leon. Was this his plan? How were they supposed to deal with all of this? With a quick move, Fenna grabbed the guard she had just shot, dragging him upright and tearing his cloak off with her other hand. Locking him in a chokehold, she trained her gun on the guard she had kicked as she joined the fight, who still lay crumpled on the ground nearby. It felt like a dirty move, but, well, Fenna wasn’t supposed to care about that anymore.

“Stay back!” she demanded. “I’m giving you one chance to save your friends’ lives.”

None of the guards engaged, but none of them backed down. While Fenna’s back was turned, a guard discreetly shot a tranquilizer dart from a blow pipe.

Leon sighed. He had killed some guards. But he hadn't anticipated whatever this Shardbearer was. He smiled, and took something from his belt. An allomantic grenade infused with steel. He hurled it at the main group of guards, and Pushed himself off the ground, into the air.

The grenade went off, causing a moment of distraction behind the guards. A few, however, aimed upwards and fired hand crossbows at Leon, awakened to increase their accuracy.

I’m not 100% sure if y’all would find it more fun to have a full idea of the guard’s capabilities before I pull them out, or like your characters, be in the dark about it. The first time round, you had the opportunity to get an idea of what you were up against, but given that this is an ambush that you’re surrounded by, your characters really wouldn’t know what they would have at their disposal. However, I don’t want to make it feel like they have infinite tricks up their sleeve for every eventuality (although to be fair, these are meant to be the big guns of the guard, that have more specialized and advanced equipment and training for dispatches like this)

Let me know if you want me to give you a rundown of their tools or not :D

Fenna whipped around as a dart hit her in the arm. She was forced to drop her gun to yank it out, keeping a firm grip on the first guard. It was unlikely that one dart had enough sedative to knock her out while she burned pewter, but if she took too many it might work.

She dropped into a roll, slamming her hostage into the ground, and snatched her gun from the ground along with a fallen spear. Coming up in a crouching position, Fenna leveled the spear at one of the fallen guards and her gun towards those surrounding her. She planted a foot on the second injured guard’s back and tapped weight—not enough to do serious damage—but enough to hurt.

This was not a good situation. She glanced at Leon hoping he had some plan. …Though at this point she was doubtful.

Altin looked up at the Coinshot, who was flying through the air, metal being pushed away from him. He would be dealt with, with nearly fifteen guards there.

But that Thug with a hostage... She would be a big problem. He summoned Weaver as a dagger. He stepped forward and hurled his Weaverdagger straight towards the Thug. He hoped that if she was forced to dodge, she would be forced to get off that injured guard. Better, if he was seen helping, the guards hopefully wouldn't arrest him.

Leon landed on a balcony, surveying the area. Fenna being imprisoned was a problem that would have to be dealt with. Later. He Pushed himself into the sky, far away from the guards and Fenna.

Fenna rolled backwards as something flashed towards her from the side. Something bounced off her ankle as she did so and spun away.

Fenna looked up in anger as Leon launched himself away. She had gone along with this because she assumed he had some sort of plan. But apparently he was just winging it, and now was content to leave her to deal with the aftermath.

Fenna stored weight and launched herself forward over the ring on guards. She fired downwards as she passed overhead and landed on top of a nearby roof. Re-holstering her gun and securing the spear to her belt, she took off across the roof.

The guards quickly followed, some propelling themselves onto the rooftops with grappling hooks, and others chasing on foot. The falcon flew overhead, being sure to be high enough to be out of range of any projectile, but still within eyesight. The falcon had a reflective collar, so it easily caught the light. So long as the guards on the ground kept eyes on the falcon's light, the falcon would lead them to the criminals. It was a clever system, and one that had worked time and time again. Nonetheless, the guards were careful, spreading out and following on foot. They knew the city, and knew where criminals tried to hide. Few had managed to escape from New Hallandren guards, and for good reason.

The guards largely ignored Altin, but a few guards stayed in the area. "state your name and intent!" one of them yelled, a bit to harshly. They didn't look like they wanted a fight, but they certainly seemed ready for one.

Altin ignored the guards, crossing over to the injured guards. He grunted and hefted him onto his shoulders. "Let's get your injured men to a hospital," He said. "The name is Altin, as for intent its a long story. Now let's get moving. I don't want the men who I saved to die on me."

Altin isn't actually this heroic. He just want the guards who saw him interfer to vouch for him.

Leon Pushed a bullet at the falcon, hoping to take it down, as he soared high above the rooftops.

Fenna, New Hallandren

Fenna brought herself to a sudden stop, then stored weight and threw herself sideways, flipping across the street and landing on the roof on the opposite side. She took off in that direction, hoping the sudden 90-degree turn would throw off the pursuit and buy her a small amount of time. Leaping across another street, she spotted a large building one more street over and launched herself towards it. Tapping weight, she crashed through a window on the third floor.

What exactly this building is, I’ll leave to you to decide. I’m not feeling particularly creative right now.

Also, unrelated, but are the spears the guards had aluminum? I had assumed so, but looking back, I think the only things explicitly stated to be aluminum were the bracers. Since Fenna swiped one, I figured I should double check.

One last question, once again unrelated: does going into an alley anywhere in Alleycity send you through the pocket dimension? Or does it have to be deliberate? Or is it just somewhat random? I ask because that seems like a natural place to hide, but obviously if it sends you into a dangerous alternate dimension, that’s probably not very smart.

The spears are probably made of aluminum (or at least the spear heads), or at the very least, a mixture of stone and obsidian. As far as it matters for me, they’re not allomantically meddlable. Probably aluminum though, or at least an aluminum alloy.

as for the alleys and the Alleys, from what I understand, not every alley takes you to the Alleys. It’s a fairly random thing, and the general rule of thumb in the Alleyverse is unless you are looking to enter the Alleys, don’t go too far down an alley.

Also, I hope you don’t mind me temporarily sidelining the Thav interaction? That’s a one on one interaction, and my posts here are affecting 3 characters, so I’m prioritizing the New Hallandren scene right now.

Thanks! And yeah, that’s fine. I’m still waiting for a way to get Jerrin and Thav involved in the main plot, so I’m not in a hirry for that scene to be done. (At the very least, if they here about this commotion that might be a good reason for them to show up.)

@Lord Ruler Sylphrena, maybe your character could be in this building! This seems like a not terrible way to bump into Fenna :D. If you decide to go that route, either you can set the scene of what the building is and why you’re there, or if you want, you can let me do it. But frankly, I’m A OK with other people taking on some of the worldbuilding burden.

The guards were confused, but not in a position to say no. They helped up their men and led them to the infirmary.

.…..

Themis, New Hallandren, Sapphire Street

Themis, the captain of the New Hallandren guard, arrived at the infirmary. It was a generally dull room, with a sterile scent to the air. Luckily, her men were in better shape than she had feared. There had been injuries, but none were grave. Well, aside from those that didn’t make it to the ward.

It was something Themis had grown used to. Born in Alleycity, she was forced to be accustomed to the chaos and danger of the city. The city hadn’t had a proper census in decades, and law was something that had to be fiercely protected. You never knew when some chaos bringer would slip through the Alleys, with no regard for human decency. But for every loss, there was a victory. Her men were out there, tracking down the scoundrels that did this. She had the entire district on high alert, with descriptions of the criminals already in their records. They wouldn’t be able to hide for long.

She glanced at the mirror in the ward. Looking back at her was someone who had seen better days. Her hair, once a brilliant blonde, had faded into a withered grey. Frown lines creased her face, and there were bags under her eyes that she could never seem to erase. She stood tall, with a pristine leather uniform, and a blazing red cape. She had seen better days, yes, but her best days were still far from behind her.

She walked over to the radiant, her boots thumping on the ground. “I thank you for helping my men to safety. You’ve done the city a great service.” She remained stiff, making sure to keep her demeanor firm. “My men said your name was Altin, and that you fended off the intruders. However, they also stated that you lacked a permit into the city, and that you have not yet revealed your intentions.”

”What are your reasons for breaching this district’s lockdown protocols and entering without a permit, and immediately interfering with district affairs?” Her amber eyes locked onto the radiant’s, unwavering and cold.

Altin, New Hallendren, Sapphire Street

Altin took a calming breath. If he messed this up, well, he didn't want to think about it. Weaver whispered reassurance in his mind. Altin stood up straight and looked this captain in the eye, unwavering. He would not be intimidated by her.

"You're welcome for saving your guards. But you're wrong about me. I'm no radiant, just a wanderer with a little bit of special circumstances.

Well, to cut a long story short, I have a gift from her. Anyway, the reason I don't have a permit is because I didn't know I needed one. I walked into an alley on Roshar. The next thing I remember is coming out of the alley and seeing that coinshot killing people. I'm sorry if I broke one of your district's laws, but I can't stand by and let men die without at least trying to help.

Now arrest me if you want, but I would advise against it. After all, you do look like something bad is going on. So I will make you an offer. You hire me to track down those two who escaped. In return, I swear that I can help you weather what ever is happening here. "
He looked here straight in the eyes and offered his hand.

Themis refused to take his hand, keeping hers behind her back. “I will decline your offer.”

She paused.

”However, I am willing to make a contract. I can craft a permit for you, permitting you to operate within the district as a non-resident, provided that your sole mission is to see these two criminals apprehended.”

Themis began to pace.

”You will report to me at the sunset of every day with your findings, and should they be apprehended, we can renegotiate your contract for a more permanent stay.”

”However, should you go more than two days without reporting, or are found to be abusing your stay, your permit will be revoked and you will be jailed.”

She turned to face Altin. “You will not have status as a district guard, but you will be given rights to carry out your duties unimpeded. Are these terms acceptable?”

Farenah stood tall as she tried to accept her new position. It was an important position, overseeing the distribution of weapons was important.

But it was also very boring. She stood in her beige uniform that had been stained by her and awakener blood alike, it was clean now but remembering her action filled assignments made her think of how bleak this one was.

her boredom and restlessness was pushed aside as a drab and his bodyguard approached. “Ah, you must be Tulen.” Farenah said, holding out a hand to the scientist. “My name is Farenah, though most people call me Fara.”

As she got closer to the man she focused of the small device under her coat. No vibration, so he wasn’t invested. It’s pretty easy to spot a drab, but she just had to be sure.

I think it's going to take quite a while for me to get through all of Laonin's flashback/backstory stuff, so I'm going to say that he has returned to the city and gotten his bearing a bit.

Laonin, The Mistwarrens,

Leaving his home behind him, Laonin walked through the Mistwarrens. It had definitely changed during the time he was gone. A lot of the work he had put into it had been undone by new conflicts, time and age and people wearing things down. But some of his work was still intact. He had taken some time to clean himself up after catching up on what had been going on in the city. There were power struggles, as always. This tyrant, or that gang, or this hero, all throwing their weight around. Some trying to make a name for themselves, some seeking power, and some abusing it. They say history repeats itself, and Laonin could attest to that.

Laonin eventually made his way into the Corridor, a chaotic and beautiful part of town. He was happy to see that while the art was almost all completely different than it had been on his last visit, nearly every surface was still covered in some sort of artistic expression. He made his way along the streets, perusing the various displays of talent and allowing himself a little time to enjoy the view. After a while though, he found himself at his destination.

The Silver Dagger. Laonin wasn't familiar with the place personally, as it had sprouted up in the time he was away, but had heard enough about it for him to intrigue him. He looked it over from the outside, and then entered through to front door. A bell rang as he walked in, a nice little touch. There appeared to already be a customer inside, waiting for service. He appeared to be a young man, likely an Allomancer based off the Mistcloak he appeared to be wearing. Laonin nodded a greeting to him, respecting his privacy by not walking over. Laonin instead began looking over the various supplies and equipment on offer. He picked up a couple items, inspecting them to judge the quality of the craftsmanship, and then continued to peruse the shop. He glanced back toward the counter periodically, so he knew when the shopkeep was available.

Thav, The Corridor, The Silver Dagger

Thav did as the shopkeeper suggested, though he was pretty well stocked on most items. Some aluminum would be useful, but he couldn't afford to use their limited funds on weapons. He did select some aluminum bullets--it wouldn't be enough to use constantly, but it would be useful for dealing with Coinshots and Lurchers. He waited at the counter for the shopkeeper to return.

Venser, The Corridor, The Silver Dagger

After some time, Venser emerged. “Apologies for the delay! We just got a new supply of electrum, and I didn’t have the time to unpack it.” He glanced at the aluminum bullets. “Alright. The vials plus the bullets will be fourteen Chrysts, or 18 boxings and 44 clips.”

One of the most fascinating things about Alleycity was the sheer variety of currencies. He quickly had to look into the conversions, and realized how easily the system could be gamed. With the variety of currencies, each with imperfect conversions between each other, you could easily convert between currencies for a net profit.

Unfortunately, the banks didn’t work like that. For each conversion, they carefully made sure that you would be getting a net loss of profit, with a small tax for conversion. With each tax different between each bank, there was no universal conversion factor to apply to every transaction. For shopkeeps like him, that meant that he had to make up his own. It was a delicate balance, of course, as if you had noticeable enough differences between currencies compared to nearby shops, it would drive off business.

He supposed there was a reason it was difficult for many to start a successful business here.

Farenah’s eye twitched at the clear disrespect of the scientist. She was already stuck as a babysitter of a literal storehouse, and now this snobby drab (which was an unusual mix of words) comes to help her operation an expects that he has any superiority to her!

Farenah took a sharp breath in, lowered her hand, and relaxed her posture. Now was not the time to make new enemies. “Well, you came just in time Tulen. We have been preparing to deliver a large supply of weaponry to the other side of the city. I highly suggest you go with them.” She paused. Although it would be good to have a scientist to help handle this specific cargo, she might have to keep an eye on this one. “I will also be joining this one as well, as it is of particular importance.”

One of the nearby agents suddenly turned their attention towards the trio. “Fara, weren’t you instructed to stay here and supervise the warehouse?”

Farenah turned to look at the agent and gave them a glare that said ‘if I have to stay here for five more seconds, I will personally see to making your life under my command as painful as possible’. She then said in a calm but firm voice, “I assure you that this operation will not be jeopardized by my absence. We will follow the chain of command: tell Victor he is in charge until my return.”

Farenah turned back to the newcomers as the agent scurried away. “Now then.” She said her voice genuinely relaxed, but her smile still fake. “Follow me. The truck is just this way. I assume you can drive Tulen?”

Sorry for the delay. To avoid a prolonged conversation it is probably best to assume that the next scene will take place in the truck.

Tulen Hental, IRS weapons depot, new Hallandren

Tulen’s eye twitched as he considered the woman’s breach of duty in the truck.

He was glad he hadn’t shaken her hand.

”What protocols do you have in place in case of an emergency?”

Thav, The Corridor, The Silver Dagger

Thav deposited the 18 boxings and 44 clips onto the counter, thanked the shopkeeper, and walked out of the shop, stashing his purchases in his bag.

Once he was a safe distance away, he retrieved the vials of bronze and steel and pulled out some empty vials of his own. He emptied half of each vial into an empty one, mixing together the bronze and steel. Swinging the bag back over his shoulder, he started off once again, heading back to the hideout.

Laonin, The Corridor, The Silver Dagger

Laonin watched as the young man made his purchase and left. His boots making a satisfying thump on the floor as he walked, Laonin made his way up to the counter to have his discussion with the shopkeeper.

"Hello there. My name is Laonin Kungli, pleasure to make your acquaintance." Laonin said, reaching forward for a firm handshake. "I haven't had the pleasure of visiting your fine establishment, as I have been away from the Alleycity for many years. But I am glad to see that those with the drive and motivation to succeed are still rewarded here." he said, taking the interior of the Silver Dagger in. "There was a time where I was fairly well known in the Mistwarrens, and had some amount of influence in the city as a whole, but given my prolonged absence I am sure all of that has faded, along with people's memory of me. I am trying to get myself refamiliarized with the city and with what has been going on in it, and your name has come up as someone who might be good to talk to. I am also trying to make new connections, and perhaps partnerships with the right people. I am a blacksmith and Forger by trade, and from what I can tell your wares have the mark of a skilled craftsman. Do you produce your own goods, or do you have staff who do that for you?"

Saying all of this, Laonin watched the shopkeeper with interest. Trying to observe any hints in body language or in his eyes as he responded.

@Koloss17

This man was surprisingly open about his intentions, which Venser appreciated. He was used to having to read someone’s story from their mannerisms, so not having to do that for once was a pleasant surprise.

”The designs and many of the crafts are my own, with some being imported. However, a true craftsman knows the works that sells the best are the ones that have soul to them,” Venser said, winking.

”yet with a shop like this, there is only so much that one can do yourself.”

There were distinct advantages to success. ‘A merchant that doesn’t have to work for their money is a successful merchant’ his babsk had said. But there were also disadvantages. Looking upon his shelves, there were only hints of his labor on display. He chose what to stock, and even designed some of the wares himself. The glass and obsidian daggers were carefully crafted, with the various styles of mistcoats and mistcloaks being designed, but not made, by him. Yet so much else was outsourced, bulk trades being sold for slight markups. He controlled the stock, yet few of it was his. Luckily his side business, that of custom weaponry, was all done by hand.

“What of you? Looking to start up shop? The Corridor has served me well, but I came here due to a unique opportunity.”
