The tributes pods open up to reveal a beautiful scene.

They're lined up on a slightly curved beach, with pristine white sand. Gentle blue waves wash against the shore in front of them. The beach gently curves around to encircle a beautiful bay, filled with pristine, clear water. Beyond the bay is a reef where the ocean gets choppier. Several islands can be seen in the distance.

In the center of the clear bay is a smaller island; really just a sandbar, poking out of the gentle ripples. On the island stands the Cornucopia, laden with supplies, and even a few sturdy kayaks, colored brightly against the sand and water. The only way to get there is to swim.

Behind the tributes lies a beautiful jungle, covered in greenery such as they've never seen back on the continent. Gigantic trees and vines and flowers cover the land, leading up to a slight mountain on the island's northern side. The calls of birds and creatures of all kinds can be heard coming from the jungle's depths. A morning mist is rolling over the island, creating streams of clouds that block the morning sun from time to time.

Each tribute wears a simple orange jumpsuit, bright and vibrant in this world of greens and blues. They each have a shoulder pad for their chosen Aviar, whether it was provided to them for the games or a companion they brought with them. And, in an unprecedented gift, each tribute is given a simple outline map of the Arena, laminated and rolled into a pocket of their jumpsuit.

A soft, masculine voice emanates from speakers the tributes can't see. They recognize it as the voice of Mr. Forrest, one of the GM's they met during the many ceremonies preceding the games.

"Welcome, all, to the Dystopia's first annual Hunger Games. It is my honor to announce the start of this grand tradition, resurrected from ages long past, to unify and solidify this new government in a time of trial and change.

"Tributes: the countdown will start momentarily. Once the gong sounds, you're on your own. I'd suggest making a plan; find ways to hide, survive in this unforgiving land, earn the favor of the Gamemakers and Sponsors.

"Only one of you can make it out alive."

A mechanical female voice began a countown, starting at 60.

In the GM HQ, far from the arena, Mr. Forrest stepped back from the microphone. He turned to the other GMs, gathered around the monitors in the main room.

"Well, my associates, it seems we're on our way." He smiled slightly, then turned back to the monitors, watching the tributes, seeing how they felt, what they did as the waited.

This will be interesting indeed.

Finally, the countdown neared the end.

A deafening gong sounded, echoing across the water.

The games had begun.

Welcome, everyone, to the Drominad Hunger Games! This is exciting for me, especially because I've never GM'd before. (I did not expect to be. We have Eddie to thank for drafting me.) I hope this gives a chance for some fun stories to be told, a chance for you to interact with new people, and a chance for you to help build another entry in this grand story we Sharders have started telling.

I want to make a PSA that will be very important: If you cannot RP too much today, you are not going to be disqualified, or put in a severely less advantageous position. The general trend in these RPs is that day one is a hectic mass of people trying to keep track of everything that's happening, and if you miss that you're a step behind. I want to try to mitigate some of that. If you don't manage to RP until after a few pages have happened, we'll assume your character has been hiding in the woods, planning their next steps. It's a little god-mod-y, but it also means your character hasn't been standing around doing nothing for several hours of in-game time. If you have another idea of what your character might have been doing while you were gone, just write it into your first post, and we should be good. Additionally, there will be other supplies on the island besides the cornucopia, so if you miss the immediate rush to get supplies from there, you will still have the chance to get supplies.

That being said, For those that can RP a bunch right away, lets try to make sure not too much happens while others are gone. If we can lessen or eliminate the feeling of people getting left behind whatsoever, that would be great.

We'll see how today goes; it might be that we find a rhythm that makes most of that micromanaging on my part unnecessary. But just in case things do go off the rails today (in a good way, we love RPing), I wanted to make sure the people who weren't on the train still have a chance.

Winter takes in the area around him. He was more accustomed to the forest and mountain behind him than to the beach and ocean ahead. He could swim, but he decided it would be better to avoid the other tributes for now. The resources weren't worth dying for. Better to wait until the initial fighting ends. He turns and travels a short distance into the jungle, close enough to watch the action around the cornucopia, but far enough away to avoid being easily seen.

Fifteen sits at an old table about ten feet back. His headphones are on, music blaring, and he’s sketching on a piece of paper with pencils and markers. He isn’t really paying attention to anything except for occasionally looking up to observe everyone’s facial expressions. Faces are what show people. He doesn’t need to hear them to know what they think. He glades at Mr. Forrest and his eyes linger for a few seconds longer than originally intended. He isn’t exactly subtle about it too, but he wouldn’t know.

Sharlin takes in a deep breath of fresh ocean-salty air. Her childhood home had been by the ocean. She had hated it there.

Oh, come on, they had to pick a setting with tons of vines?! Sharp I grumbled from inside her head. Or her soul, or however this was supposed to be working. He'd explained it a few times but she always got bored and spaced out.

"You're the only one bothered by it," Sharlin whispered in reply with a chuckle.

When the gong went off, she ran to the edge of the beach and dove in the water without hesitation. It was probably fine to swim in . . . the gm's wouldn't want everyone dead before the tributes even reached the cornucopia. They liked the bloodbath for supplies too much.

Sharlin swam as quickly as possible. She admitted, she was a bit rusty, but after a few strokes she got into a good rhythm that allowed her slip through the water fairly easily.

Y'know? I never actually learned to swim myself. Grew up on a farm, and my games was in an abandoned city, of all things!

"Very helpful commentary," Sharlin gasped back at him. She was almost to the sand-bar now. Just a little further.

The water was warm and clear. Sharlin could see schools of fish swimming in the calm of the bay, and as she'd suspected, nothing immediately dangerous was visible.

Pellee was watching with a hunger in her eyes. A desire to see something happen.

Finally... I've waited too long for this day.

Casper opens his eyes to the forest. He immediately started panicking, he wasn't ready for this. He wasn't the survivalist in his family, that was always his father and brother. Well it could be worse, at least he knew how to live in the wilds, somewhat. Knowing that the cornucopia would be a death trap with all those goodies, he immediately books it out into the forest, the strange bird on his shoulder in tow.

A few questions

1. how plausible is it that Casper doesn't know what an Aviar is and

2. What would be the basic knowledge tributes would have been given before this started?

He looks at her, his eyes moving off of Mr. Forrest to her. He opens his mouth to speak but decides it would be no good for him. He’s supposed to be quiet and wearing his headphones when he’s in the ‘big kid’ room. He stands up, holding his drawing close to his chest as he slowly walks over. He looks up at her from behind and goes to touch her by her lower back. He can’t see anything, they are all too tall.

She turned to him, masking the sadistic look in her eyes with kindness.

They were given basic training on survival in the arena, including explanations on what Aviar are and how to use them. So, he knows enough to be able to survive for a little bit. He also has the map, too.

He looks up at her flips his paper around. His just a simple drawing. It’s got a house and trees and a forest. It isn’t special really it’s just sweet, tender even. Though he probably should have been working on blueprints. He points up at his headphones and whispers, even though he isn’t really supposed to be speaking when in the ‘big kid room’, “Take them off plea-“

"Not in here." She took his hand and led him to where the screens were out of earshot. Then she took them off.

“Mhm.” He says excitedly. He never has anyone to play with so this is exciting!

She returned to the room with the screens and grabbed an earpiece and smaller screen, went to her own chambers and changed into a knee length gray dress, and returned to the hallway. "Okay, let's go out."

Wait, so we don't have the Aviar yet?

@The Bookwyrm

Aerol waited for the gong to sound. The air was sticky with heat and humidity. Gosh, I hate the ocean, she thought.

She eyed the Cornucopia.

The gong sounded, and she dove into the water. She may not have been tall, but she certainly wasn't scrawny. She made her way to the north side of the sandbar.

No, you have your starting Aviar, but only that one.

The cornucopia was surrounded by various supplies, including a few waterproof backpacks that looked like they were filled with supplies, several weapons, and three plastic kayaks. One of the kayaks had two sets of oars tied on, and a pack of supplies strapped to the top.

Sharuel, her Aviar, circled in the air above her as Sharlin swam the last stretch to the cornucopia. Her muscles weren't aching yet which was a good sign.

She pulled herself up onto the sand, taking half a second to catch her breath, and then running to the cornucopia. She couldn't see any else there yet, but still she kept her guard up.

Sharuel lighted on the sand nearby, pecking at a stone, probably confusing it for something edible. He meant well.

It's so unfair they gave you all maps right at the start, back in my day we had to find those on our own.

"I see," She replied, mostly tuning him out as she hastily scanned the supplies in front of her.

Mkay, can I get a description of what's there? Also, are guns available as a weapon? That would be Sharlin's priority.

Sharlin immediately grabs a backpack, and starts scanning the weapons for a gun, or long-distance weapon of any kind.

A single speargun lies close to the silvery cornucopia, along with four or five extra spears. There are a few bows and crossbows scattered around, but that's the only gunpowder firearm.

There's also a few sets of fishing gear.

Aerol ran ashore, grabbed a random pack, some throwing knives, a oar off the ground, and shoved it all on a kayak.

She ignored the one that already had supplies on it. It seemed to obvious.

She stopped and eyed the other girl on the island, but didn't make any move to attack her.

Then, seeing the Speargun near the other girl, she picked up a crossbow and some bolts and quickly loaded it. @J. Magi
