Arcanum Unbounded 2

Recommended Posts

Undoubtedly, Brandon has been Brandoning since the last UA. What is Brandoning, you ask? Why, that's his habit of uncontrollably writing stories. The Secret Projects being the most overt evidence of this condition. He's got the big books now but who's to say he doesn't have a collection of short stories stashed away for a rainy day (or upcoming Cosmere content drought)?

My question for you is this: What story would you love to see in Arcanum Unbounded 2: Electrum Boogaloo?

For me, I would like to see a slice of life story about the customs agents at the Nathian perpendicularity. Kind of like an episode of one of those Border Security shows that were big several years ago.

I'd also love a story about an organization of specialists and Radiants (pre-Recreance) whose job is to hunt down and neutralize/capture dangerous Surgebinders, spren, or other magical entities on Roshar.

Sometime. Arcanum Unbounded 2; except I haven't written very many stories that would go in an Arcanum Unbounded 2, because they all became Secret Projects.

I would like stories that try to answer some of the questions left open

Spoiler
  • A Rose empire story to give information on Resealing and Bloodsealing that could not fit in TES - not a sequal to Shai's story, just more information on that Continent. Also maybe answer the open questions of Ashrvan succeeded in making changes within the Rose Empire and/or eventaully grew to not needing Daily Stamps.
  • A White Sand follow up (if it is not part of Darksider when/if thta happens) asnwering if/how Kenton was able to make changes to the Diem's Charter and activities (new Mastrell's Path, Diem sub-locations in other cities, etc.)
  • A story from Nalthis in a country not seen in Warbreaker
  • A Scadrian Worldbringer Story from some time (a century or two) before the events with Alendi, Kwaan and Rashek.
  • An example of the kind of "story" Marasi read of Wax and Wayne in the Roughs before she met them.
  • Far-fetched idea: The Five Scholars visiting Silverlight, before the Manywar.

I would definitely like to see a small story set on Lumar, on one of the other spore oceans so we can see what life is like there. Like the Zephyr Spore Sea, that'd be pretty interesting.

I'd also love to see stories about Ancient Radiants just so we can have a clearer picture as to how those times were like. Though I think it's more likely we'll probably get either the Horneater story or that Lopen story as part of Arcanum 2.

I don't think we'll be getting any stories about Komashi or Canticle since we've pretty much seen all we can see from there. Maybe a bit more about Komashi's past but an UTol story would be better, get a picture of the UTol system as well. Maybe an explanation about why Virtuousity Splintered herself.

Yeah, I didn't bother mentioning any of the things we are already expecting to be part of future novels - and Brandon's already indicated we won't get much (or anything) from Radiants Pre-Aharietiam/Recreance until we get Herald Flashback scenes in the back five.

Ditto with information about other areas of the Fjordell Empire, since that is expected to be in Elantris 2 and 3; or information on Vasher and company that's expected for Nightblood.

Though, I do wonder if/when we will learn more about the Third Selish Empire (if it will be in Elantris 2/3 or a separate story). WoB

Nimrod Rappaport

In Arcanum Unbounded you mentioned that Sel is one of the biggest planets. You also mentioned that there are three empires on that planet. In Elantris 2 two will we get... You also mentioned that they are largely ignorant of each other, will we get a book in which those empires interact? Maybe in Elantris 2

Also, can you please specify on their nature and maybe some inspirations you got when writing and thinking about them?

Brandon Sanderson

So, sure. Sel wears its inspirations quite blatantly on its sleeve, right? It's not that obvious for instance in Stormlight that the Alethi are based off of Mongolians, because there's so much more in the mix there, that it's not quite as obvious. But in Sel, it's a little more obvious. You know, basically the idea came to me that what if the vikings had united behind a very hierarchical religion like Catholicism, and we had Catholic vikings, conquering the world. What would the world look like and that is where the entire religion came from.

Actually the truth is it's like, there was this priest, right, and one group became Buddhist and the other became Catholic vikings and, you know, Buddhist Renaissance... Italians is kind of where we got there and of course, the Rose Empire the inspirations are a little bit more Eastern and Middle Eastern. For instance, the Grands are based on Babylonian influences and I'm kind of looking at a lot of Babylonian, a little bit of Syrian. But of course Shai is very very clearly based on East Asian cultures and specifically China.

So, the empires and things like that... for there you might have noticed that we've got a Europe centered one, and an Asia/Eastern centered one, so you might be able to theorize where the third empire's inspirations might be or at least a list of possible candidates.

We'll save those for AU3 then. 😉

Agreed! I know Brandon said he's not going to do another Tress story, and I agree with him, but it would be nice to have a different viewpoint somewhere else on the planet. Perhaps with an offhand mention of certain renowned flaxen-haired ship captain.

At least we know we will get those answers eventually - many of the questions that I posted in the linked thread I have no hope of ever getting answers; since there is no planned sequel that would cover the information, the chances of BS over having an event at the local military base is slim to none, I'm caring for a disabled parent so I will never get to travel to a signing or Q&A, and I'm so rural my only internet is DSL - so I can't "stream" anything to attend virtual Q&As (reddit is off the table for moral reasons).

In my "magical happy christmas dream-land" Team Sanderson would add a Q&A Blog  to the "Kickstarter" projects. Each backer gets to submit 1 question after the window closes (as part of the backer survey) and as part of the rewards he publishes a Blog entry answering, say, 50 non-RAFO questions from the collected submissions. It would allow him and the team time to find the questions he wants to answer and craft the answers exactly how he chooses; while offing hope to those of us that don't have much chance to ever ask a question directly. . .

Now that would be amazing. Hope he decides to do it someday.

Fun idea indeed, but there were 102,000 backers. It would be too time consuming to just look through all those questions. It might be more manageable if each backer were given to opportunity to submit a question AND have 5 votes to choose 50 question that Brandon would be answering, delegating this task of looking through questions to fans - which is often happening with live-streams, as fans are posting questions and voting on reddit.

The example was illustrative, not proscriptive. I really dislike the idea of fans having any vote in what gets answers  - the core of the idea is Brandon being able to answer the things he thinks deserve answers and will not be covered in future Stories (RAFO). Also, that's why I said "team," For example:

Spoiler
  • 102,000 Questions from backers (would be part of the database already)
    • Subtract repeats (20%)
  • ~81600 Remaining
    • Subtract items already covered by a WoB (20% - since many backers are new(er) fans and will not be familiar with 17th Shard, Coppermind or Arcanum)
  • ~65280 Remaining
    • Subtract questions that don't conform to rules (20% - e. g. a questions that is really 3+ questions struncg together to avoid the "1 question" rule)
  • ~52224 Remaining
    • Subtract questions that would only result in RAFO (35% - cause Fans love RAFOs)
  • ~33945 Remaining
    • There are probably more ways to whittle down that I'm not thinking of off-hand
    • These could then be categorized and organized with the team picking representative samples for Brandon to review (possibly on guidance from Brandon)
    • For example, if he knew he wanted no more than 2 questions each from 25 "tags" (like Arcanum)

And I really think 20% for those first three cuts are probably very low examples.

Also, it need not be tied to a Crowd-Funded project (just the easiest example I could think of to spread the word) - any "collect questions - sort - choose - answer" model would be great since it provides choice of topic(s) to discuss;  lots of time (unlike signings);  and the ability to wordsmith answers.

That would be a brilliant idea. I have two little kids whose bed time is during every livestream so my chances at having a question asked is also very small.

You do realize if you want Brandon to answer questions he specifically wants to answer, then he himself must read most of them to choose those questions himself? His team doesn't know what Brandon knows, sure they know a lot, but not everything, they don't have to know what's fascinating for Brandon to answer, Peter knows the most but he still isn't Brandon. And he and his team also don't know what question he answered in the past in WoBs, which Brandon often tells when somebody asks him about what he said in the past. They might remember a question that is often asked, or a very significant question about some interesting theory, but generally speaking they have no idea what he answered - there are hundreds of WoB answers each year, 15,000 WoBs in total on Arcanum and not to mention Reddit. Nobody can remember them all and searching for them is out of the question, as that's even more time consuming.

Assuming that each question is 10 words long (which is a very generous assumption), all questions asked would be 1 million words in total - more than twice the word count of RoW. That's just too long for Brandon and his team to just read through all of them. It would take days or weeks to do that and this time could have been better spent on writing books - and his team has their own work to do, they also don't have time for this at all.

Sure, I agree, it would be fun to hear a question Brandon has chosen to answer, but on the scale of crowdfunding campaigns, this is simply not feasible when you have 100,000 backers.

Brandon now is doing what you are proposing but on a much smaller scale - he can now see questions people ask him in the chat during live streams and answer those he finds interesting. This is manageable, but 100,000 questions, 1 million words or more, that's simply not gonna happen even with his team engaged.

When you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense. Another option (and I hate to suggest it) is have the question be a part of the top crowdfunding tier. I wouldn't suggest charging more just to have a question but make it another limited level at the same price (for example, $650 from the WoR campaign). Say the first 100 backers have the chance to send in a question.

Another idea is to just have a straight lottery. They open a contest period, everyone enters, RNG selects 100 winners, a team filters the questions, Brandon answers.

Agreed, those sound like good compromises. While the random selection defines the purpose of "Brandon answering questions he wants to answer," when you have 100,000 questions you have to bring your expectations down a lot.

Back on topic...

Everyone seems to agree on wanting a Mistborn: Secret History 2. What would you want it to cover?

Spoiler

The first SH ran concurrently with the Era 1 books but I feel like a sequel would have to cover more ground. We have Kelsier and Spook's hemalurgy research and Kelsier getting a body back, the founding of the Ghostbloods, saving the south continent, the creation of the Bands of Mourning, and anything else in the centuries between Eras 1 & 2.

Stories I would like to see:

-first trapper visits Patji

-Vasher and Shashara research and create Nightblood

-The founding of the Iriali

-Khriss leaving Taldain for Silverlight

-Ceration and activation of the Father Machine

Have you read the Isles of the Emberdark sample chapters?

Spoiler

We learn of the legend of Cakoban, or Tenth the Finder, who led the ancestors of the Eelakin people (or possible all people on First of the Sun) through the endless sea of night, defeated the Dakwara, and was the first trapper to explore Patji. Not sure if the book will contain more of this legend but it would be cool to have some deeper context!

-Vasher and Shashara research and create Nightblood  - I imagine this sort of thing would be saved for flashbacks in a Warbreaker sequel.

-The founding of the Iriali - The Iriali are such a mystery and they keep popping up in the backgrounds of stories. It would be cool to get some concrete history there!

-Khriss leaving Taldain for Silverlight - Any full story with Khriss would be amazing. She is such an integral part of the Cosmere.

-Ceration and activation of the Father Machine - I get the feeling that this story will be left in the shadows (shroud?) of the past. I can imagine similar constructs being created in the future, however.

Beyond "The Secret History 2" and Darkside/Khriss leaving Taldain, as well as other already planned projects:

I always wanted to read an "age of exploration" story in era 2 Scadrial or anywhere in the cosmere, really, where adventures happen during or around an expedition into unknown. Without "our country/world is in danger and we are looking for something to save us" trope.

Slice of life story in Era 2 Southern Scadrial before the contact with the North. My biggest disappointment with TLM was that we didn't learn anything new about the Mawlish. Sure, we'll see plenty of them in Era 3, I presume, but it won't be the same.

Story in the Final Empire's past that Sanderson intended to put into a video game.

Something with balloons, blimps, bicycles and muscle-powered flight in conjunction with magi-tech.

That would be fun. It felt so random having the same random background character show up in Stormlight. It would be cool seeing more of his history with the Ire too.

- I love many of the Interludes of Stormlight because they often give glimpses into the lives of seemingly normal people around Roshar, experiencing small parts of the big events of the main story. Similar short stories around Scadrial would be a lot of fun.

Story in the Final Empire's past that Sanderson intended to put into a video game. - I, too, mourn the loss of the Mistborn game. Hoping for bigger and better things! A story based on it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult since most of the worldbuilding has already been done.

Something with balloons, blimps, bicycles and muscle-powered flight in conjunction with magi-tech. - Like the oft-mentioned kite magic world?
