She looked over at their prisoner. "And you?"

Ne’ik weighed his options. He didn’t like giving his real name to the Mystics, but it would be much easier to escape if they trusted him. And since he didn’t know if they could use their filthy magic to somehow tell when he was using a pseudonym, he grudgingly admitted to himself that it was better to tell them his real name. “Ne’ik,” he said grudgingly, still turned away from them.

Ne’ik found a position that was somewhat satisfactory, and closed his eyes. He knew he should probably stay awake, in case an opportunity for escape arrived, but he was tired, and the cot was more comfortable than most sleeping arrangements he’d had in the past few years.

Ji nodded, leaning back as he watched the others and the door.

Everything within him yelled at him to not trust them, no matter what they had done together or how nice they were; everyone on the streets was out to trick you. He still watched over them, because it was just the least he could do. They hadn’t wronged him… yet. It was just best to return the favor before they did betray him. It was best to be alone. Everyone fought about something within a group, then they broke off. That’s what every attempt of a rebellion had turned out in the past, and Ji had the sneaking suspicion that the same will happen again.

He still hoped, though, that there would be some people that filled the void of where his family should be. Those hopes weren’t high, but still sparkling softly amidst the darkness of the void. It would just be smother as soon as they betrayed him, and Ji was anticipating that exact moment.

Leaning against a streetlight on the corner of an adjacent intersection, Locke folded his arms as he watched the group of Mystics enter the ruins of the not-so-abandoned hospital. While he had never been inside of the ruins that remained, Locke had walked these streets many times in past years, and he knew of the rumors that circulated throughout Odhak regarding the building’s grim history.

Even so, Locke couldn’t help but find it ironic that a group of Mystics who had just murdered a patrol of Pacis earlier that day would find refuge here.

Glancing upwards toward the pink sky far above the skyscrapers, Locke paused for a moment as he watched the last rays of afternoon sunlight brush against the bright orange clouds that glowed as though they were ablaze. A feeling of serenity resonated over Locke as he watched day give begin to give way to amethyst night, with stars like diamonds slowly piercing the twilight sky.

Reading this right after listening to The Lies of Locke Lamora is an interesting experience.

Timeskip, since Ne’ik and Elya are sleeping?

I love that book.

I'm not sure how to get into the plot, but I like this character and his magic, so here he is.

Atik gently placed the semi humanoid creation on the ground. As easy as breathing, he imparted memory into the Twisty. It was a memory of happy times playing in the meadow. It had taken place when been [exact age to the day, around four]. A benefit of having perfect memory was that he had far more to impart than most people. Almost silent, he whispered, "Be free, dance and play, little one." And so it did. It would be fair to say it frolicked in the grassy meadow. Slowly, his other Twisties and Twirlers and Rick-Rocks gathered around the new one. They too danced and skated. Atik smiled. It had been long time since he had watched them. That made what he had to do harder. The creations could do little to protect themselves. The only reason they survived was because of Atik's protection. Atik had... business to attend to, so he couldn't protect them any longer. And I could do with some happy memories where I'm going, he thought. One by one he picked them up and absorbed the memories from them. He left them in a small cave where nothing could reach them. Solemnly, he reached into his pouch and grabbed a bundle of various materials. He placed it on the ground. The light shone on the gentle curves of a crouched figure. Atik would be glad to part with the memories he placed in the creature. Memories of hunger, fear, survival, fighting, waiting, searching. Dark times. Memories he dare not remember, but dare not live without. The memories would be well spent in the creation. He called it Preerack, Shadow, in languages long forgotten. "Awake. Be alert. Survive. Guard. Watch. Think." And with that final word, Preerack stood up. Atik stretched his arm forward and it scurried up. It was greeted by a couple other creatures that found their home with Atik. Atik stood and walked towards the setting sun.

Elya woke up in pain. It only held her for a moment; she regained composure as soon as she returned to her senses. Pressing a finger to her face, Elya scratched away dried blood. Right; she'd gotten shot there.

At the very least she hadn't been stabbed last night. Maybe these people were more trustworthy than she'd expected.

He grunted and nodded towards Verim. “Which is why I haven’t left you for dead.”

Ji pointed his gaze towards Elya. “And no, it’s not. You haven’t given me a reason to trust you, or any of you in this room.”
