  1. During Kholinar Raid in Oathbringer , no one could use stormlight ! If you did the corrupted spren detected investiture be it span reed or KR abilities . Thanks to Wit(Hoid) Azure was able to find a work around . By putting up metal plates ( it doesn’t say what kind but I’m going to guess Aluminum) but my point is Wit knew how to counter spren . I have one issue with Brandon I don’t like! And it’s that Brandon has a tendency to have Worldhoppers that know more about what’s going on behind the scenes than the natives do ! Wit can have a passed cause 5 millennia old. But there are too many others . When Kelsier first escaped the well he ran into Khriss and she knew way more than Kelsier. Iyatal the leader of ghostbloods knows way more than most of the scholars on Roshar, Vashur knows better than most Hoe to fight with shardblade . Khriss wrote arcana unbound and knows more about most of the magic on most planets. I just think there should be scholars on Roshar that know more about Roshar magic than Khriss does! Does anybody feel what I’m saying ?
  2. If you were to have the Seventh Heightening (Invested Breath Recognition) would you be able to tell if something was lashed, or someone was burning metals, etc.? Basically, is the Seventh Heightening almost like burning bronze?
  3. I was reading this other thread about the strength of Shardplate, then it dawned on me, the real topic here. Can Shardplate fly? Dalinar's vision showed a healing Radiant order in flight. I think focusing on strength is useful and entertaining but in the end pointless. Brandon Sanderson will make a character just as strong as the needs of his narrative. Investiture is malleable with resonances and differing Knights being near one another and when you add Investiture from other worlds, anything is possible, just not likely for the plot, but possible sure. I'm sure most of his WoBs are answered with that in mind. Possible, just not likely. What I really want, nay, need to know is if KR Shardplate can FLY! Any KR, likely with the needs of the novel and the acts of the Archive, every Knight will need to fly. I'm almost sure of it, but maybe we won't see it until most Radiants are on oath 5 and in Book 6 after the big in-world time break. I can't wait to read Lift's book when she is 23 or 24 but still believes herself 10. It will be hilarious. Can someone ask this when he is on tour? Will advanced oathed Knights Radiant have flying Shardplate? Not the Gravitation surge Windrunners use to make gravity change, well maybe so, not sure about specifics. I can just imagine it. Several squadrons of Shardplated knights in airborn combat formation, extra long Shardspears in hand battling the Fused. That will surely change established tactics with a 3 Dimensional battlefield.
  4. So earlier I saw a thread about why Aluminum might be immune to investiture. This thread theory used the basis that Aluminum was Adonalsium's god metal, and it makes other investiture more balanced. This made me start thinking if it is possible that the reason Aluminum is immune to investiture is along the opposite side of the spectrum. What if Aluminum can't be affected by Investiture because it only exist in the Physical Realm. In the Cosmere everything exists in 3 realms, physical, spiritual, and cognitive (I am not going to go into detail of realmatic theory, you can probably find it on the wiki if you don't already no what it is) If aluminum only exists in the Physical realm it would mean that it can't be edited by any investiture, yet it would probably still be able to be burned as an allomantic metal. Not existing in the Cognitive or Spiritual realm immediately make it impossible to forge because Forgery changes the object in both of those realms, and without them, it would be no different than just stamping an object. Oathbringer Spoilers: Those 2 things are the easiest to explain why they would work with this theory. I had a little bit more trouble with Aons because their context with realmatics is a little unclear. Aons probably couldnt directly alter Aluminum because they would probably be altering items similar to the way soulcasting works. I couldn't find enough information as to how BioChromatic Breath works when awakening an object to draw any conclusions, but I think it is safe to assume that it has something to do with at least one of the other realms. As to why things like Nightblood and Shardblades can't cut aluminum, I can't find a good conclusion since so little is known about them, the best thing I can guess at actually involves another portion to this theory that I haven't even brought up yet. What if aluminum is the one thing in the Cosmere that isn't made of investiture? This would make it so that Nightblood cannot cut it (Nightblood consumes investiture), and probably shardblades as well. Also, shardblades supposedly cut out people's souls, which involves realmatics, which would make them incapable of cutting aluminum. As to why it can't be pushed/pulled on by allomancers, I can only assume that steelpushing/ironpulling involves at least one of the other two realms. Before I finish and let you tear holes in my theory, don't say that if aluminum isn't investiture than how did Adonalsium create it, I would like to point out that we don't know that Adonalsium created the Cosmere from nothing. Parts of this theory assume that Aluminum was in fact the only thing in the cosmere before adonalsium came along, and it also assumes that Adonalsium created the other 2 realms, but couldn't find a way to put aluminum in them. Alright, I am done now. Start tearing it up.
  5. In the Coppermind article on Investiture, it says "Methods of accessing Investiture can be broadly divided into two types: physical and mechanical," but it doesn't expound on that. So what does that mean? What magic systems are physical and what are mechanical?
  6. I was wondering what everyone's theories were on the weeping as it relates to . It seems to me like it is a necessary period of rest for the highstorm's because they noted in oathbringer that the weeping seemed to last longer this year and I think that has to be related to the forced highstorm during the weeping. (I would quote it in here for you but I don't have the ebook ) I'm almost wondering if the weeping is just a way for most of the stormlight to get relocated back into the spiritual (or maybe even into the cognitive) realm and build pressure there which is released throughout the rest of the year. I do feel that this theory is a bit weak though considering some WoB's that i linked below. But I would like your guys thoughts and theories.
  7. Does the amount of Feruchemical storage I’ve Invested into a piece of metal influence what happens when I then burn that metal for compounding? If compounding involves tricking Allomancy into accepting a non traditional “key” for drawing forth Preservation’s power, then do I need any more than the tiniest bit of Feruchemical Investiture within my compounding storage metals in order to perform compounding at all? What, in such a case, would then happen to my pre-existing Feruchemical storages? Would they be “refunded” to me? Would the Investiture merely return to Preservation and Ruin? Would it increase my compounding rate, output, or speed? Just some basic questions about the basic hack of Mistborn.
  8. So, let’s say that I, already in possession of the powers of Allomantic and Feruchemocal Nicrosil, were then given a steel spike, Hemalurgically charged with Allomantic Pewter. If if I were to place this spike in my ear, and then to store the investiture it endows me with inside a nicrosilmind, would removing the hemalurgic spike then still remove the power to burn pewter from me? If I were to place only a tiny, tiny piece of that pewter investiture within a nicrosilmind, and then to burn that nicrosilmind (lather, rinse, compound), could I then remove that spike from my ear, passing it along to someone else for free pewter, while retaining supernatural levels of pewter burning in myself? Or would this spike prevent me from storing such Investiture? Would it still remove it altogether, seeing that investiture as keyed and attached to the spike? If I were to compound and the remove that spike, and such removal took away my pewter, would the next wielder of my spike have supernaturally strong pewter? I would love to be able to throw people to the moon, but I’m unsure whether I’d like to murder someone on a potentially failed attempt to gain such abilities. Thoughts?
  9. Is there an official explanation as to how Vasher survives Roshar by substituting Stormlight for Breath? The basis of my question is due to my current understanding of investiture. I've always thought of investiture as analogous to electricity. At electricity's core it's the basic principle of moving charges, but each country/region has differing outlets for that electricity and you have to have the right cord or adapter in order to access that outlet. Thus in my mind, investiture is the power, and the shard/shards of each world dictate how that power is accessed by the general populous. Hoid is a good example of someone who's accessed multiple adapters in order apply investiture in different ways, but Vasher is not shown (to my knowledge) to exhibit anything other than his native Breath/Awakening magic. So how is Vasher able to adapt to Stormlight to fulfill his constant need for investiture to keep himself alive? Does he have to actively absorb stormlight or is he a sort of "ground" that investiture just wants to flow into? Does he have to stand out in the highstorm with all the spheres in order to recharge, or do spheres seem to go dun a little faster around him? How does he survive the Weeping? Can he also pull investiture from the Everstorm/Voidlight? Also, as I write this I'm starting to wonder. Is there yet a cosmere unit of investiture? Do we know the "voltage difference" between one breath versus spheres? Thanks, -Ren
  10. Brandon just responded to a question on reddit from @Oversleep. One of the best WoBs we have on Investiture and its conceptual ideas; it's essay length and helps to point us in the right direction when it comes to the nuance of the relationship between Autonomy and Patji. Read here.
  11. In Scadrial books Shadesmar is one of Mists and in Roshar it is full of Spren and countless connections to the physical world rolled up in little spheres. Are these difference defined by the collectivve minds of the people or is it more defined by the Investiture/Shard in charge (Roshar was originally Adonalsium's world so the spheres and most of the spren are probably his and not specifically Honor, Cultivation, or Odium's). Is the only constant to Shadesmar the beyond. Is the inverse landscape a constant? How much can a Shard change the landscape. Brandon has said that Sel is a dangerous place in the Cognitive realm because of the Shattered shards power residing mainly in the cognitive realm so how far can the cognitive realm be twisted by Investiture. Perhaps there is a splinter of Ambition causing the cognitive realm to be twisted on threnody.
  12. Hello all! Not quite sure how to start this off so I'll just jump right in. First of all, I am very interested in philosophy. Currently, I have a class about ancient Greek philosophy. When we were going over Plato's forms, it struck me that this idea is incredibly similar to the Cognitive Realm. If you're not familiar with the idea, Plato essentially believed that the Forms were what was most real about an object. If you break down a table, it it just made out of wood. However; there is some sort of thing about a table that makes it a table. That "tableness" is distinct from the wood, stone or metal that makes it up. For Plato, there is another realm, a real of ideals, where things such as Justice, Table, Triangle, ect. all exist at their most real. This sounds incredibly similar to the Cognitive realm and I think that may have been a major source of inspiration for Brandon Sanderson. I'm curious to see if he has said anything on the matter. Additionally, it seems this is not the only thing that he has drawn from ancient Greek philosophy. Now, I haven't read all the Cosmere literature at this time, so this may be completely wrong, but here goes. Heraclitus believed that all things were constantly changing. Sanderson has mentioned that Hemalurgic spikes need contact with the blood in order to actually steal power. He mentioned in a Q&A that it has something to do with the blood being in motion. Motion was tied with life for many pre-Socratic philosophers. This idea is still somewhat half-formed, but I think a discussion on it is warranted. It is possible that the spiritual realm is tied with how objects and people change through time. Something else was incredibly important to the pre-Socratic and some post Socratic philosophers. That was the notion of Arkae, or, roughly, what it means to exist. To me, no unifying theory can be complete without asking this question of the Cosmere. Clearly, for something to exist, it needs at least a Cognitive aspect. However; for something to be sentient, it needs a Spiritual aspect. Motion is life. This is supported by how we see Investiture work on Roshar. The Stormlight encourages those who hold it to move. Investiture is the stuff of life. This also follows from what we know of humanity, Investiture is necessary for the existence of humanity. In fact, I would argue that Investiture is Sanderson's Arkae. Without that, there is no connection between the Cognitive and Spiritual realms, and no impact on the physical realm. In this way then, it would seem that actual magic is largely incidental to the way that reality itself exists in the Cosmere. Thank you, if you read through the fruits of my procrastinatory ramblings. I probably got some things wrong, in fact, I hope I did so those can be pointed out and I can learn something new about the Cosmere! I appreciate any thoughts that you have on this mass of a post! Thank you so much!
  13. So I have 6h 49m left on the Audiobook for Oathbringer and if this is proven wrong in the next few hours feel free to call me a moron and send me on my way but I've noticed that throughout the whole book any Fused which uses a surge has only ever been shown to use one not have 2 like the Knights Radiant. All the flying Fused have only ever been shown to use Gravitation and not Division or Adhesion. And then the Fused thief trying to steal the King's drop from the Thaylen City vaults only use Illumination. So do you think that Voidbinding only allows for them to perform one surge? or that they haven't been using the other surge that they have been given.
  14. I was wondering what happens to atium once it has been burned? As far as I am aware atium is the body of ruin/ati and is physical form of Investiture. I understand that "Investiture works in a similar fashion to energy in that it follows its own laws of thermodynamics and that it is not possible to destroy Investiture; it can only be redistributed." Preservation had the mists snap people to become atium mistings so that they could burn away the atium cache so that ruin couldn't get a hold of it. But, where does that physical Investiture go to (e.g., the cognitive or spiritual realm?) and why can't ruin access it after it has been "redistributed"?
  15. So I've mentioned this a couple of times in different threads, about how I view the relationship between the realms, as well as investiture, matter, and energy. I've explained it a couple times as 3 sheets of paper close together, and investiture is a weight that draws them together. But this isn't really entirely right. Paper isn't the right analogue. The three sheets are more like how space time is pictured in 2D: stretchy, not stiff like paper. Then three of these "sheets" are how I view realmatics. I also associate Matter with the physical realm, and Investiture in the Spiritual, which suggests that energy is related to the cognitive realm, which I'm still working on an explanation for that. Also, in a 2D view of spacetime, matter creates a dip, (as does energy, but to a lesser extent, given that matter is more... concentrated according to E=Mc^2. ) Investiture also does the same thing to the Realms, and that is key to how I picture realmatics. I will now use this model to explain how some various events work. First off, Highstorms. Highstorms are HUGE sources of investiture. The constant "weight" of that investiture has drawn the realms really close together on Roshar, so Spren appear. Furthermore, I have theorized that according to the fact that Shinovar never sees the brunt of the highstorms due to the mountains, that the realms are farther apart there. This (I think) is why spren don't appear there. It is ALSO (i think) why the plants have no life to them. They basically have no cognitive self compared to normal Rosharan grass and such. This also lends weight to the idea that perhaps the plants of Roshar are able to detect highstorms due to the investiture. When the realms start coming closer together, the trees and grass snap into their holes. Now of course it might be also a response to vibrations or something like that. Second, Kaladins dramatic oaths. Someone asked at some point why (in world, for writing purposes it's for a Climax) Kaladin always bursts alight when he does his oaths, unlike the other radiants. The fact is, most of the other Radiants have constantly progressed towards their oaths. Kaladin, on the other hand, recedes during WoR and WoK. Then, suddenly, he makes the decision to follow his oaths, and snap! He bursts alight dramatically. Now in my picture of realmatics, I describe it like this. The oaths that bring the realms together are fading, therefore Syl isn't able to manifest or think as well, and his abilities recede. Then, he changes and suddenly his oaths are much stronger, snapping the realms much closer together. Ergo, investiture suddenly flows to him, and he becomes significantly more invested. Now I'm going to make some speculation. Normal people aren't invested enough (aren't making enough of a dent in the realms) to use investiture. But people who are invested make enough of a dent to suck in investiture. By this method, Vasher should be able to suck in stormlight, because he's invested with breaths. I also think that a misting actively burning their metal might be able to make enough of a dent to ingest Stormlight. Finally, perpendicularities. Brandon described a shardpool as "spiking" the realms together. This perfectly fits with how I picture it. Investiture, the "weight", formed into a spike and driven through the realms to bring them entirely together. Else calling would be more like a needle. Also, a little more theorization. I think that aluminum pushes the Realms apart, countering the "weight" of investiture. Because of that, that would mean that maybe a large block of aluminum could prevent spren from appearing. However it may be that the property of aluminum is totally within the aluminum itself, which would mean that it would be a moot point, because why would a spren materialize within a block of aluminum or any metal anyway. However, based on the fact that you only need a hat made of aluminum, and not an aluminum head to prevent emotional allomancy from affecting you, I think that the aluminum has a somewhat local effect, forcing the realms apart around the aluminum. Therefore, according to this model, a radiant wearing enough aluminum shouldn't be able to suck in stormlight.
  16. So this isn't a super important question but I was curious so thought I'd ask. Why are some investitures only effective certain areas and some can work at vast distances. This especially relates to Scadrial where we've seen Allomancy and Feruchemy work off-world (by Hoid), however, I think we can assume that Hemalurgy cannot work off-world as I find it impossible to assume that no one in millennia of searching wouldn't have noticed that metals steal powers. Anyway, I was wondering if this has been brought up or if anyone has any theories as to why this occurs.
  17. So this is a pretty far out there theory that I have been thinking about. I went online to see if I could find anything, but wasn't able to find anything like my theory so here it goes. My theory is that investiture is evil. I got thinking about this when we see Vivenna in Oathbringer. Now we don't know this for certain so I could be way off, but it seems that Vivenna's sword does not have the same effect on her, other beings, or investiture that Nightblood does. This got me thinking as to why. It seems clear to me that it has to do with the command of "Destroy Evil". In Warbreaker we see a problem with this command because Nightblood is not aware of what evil is. He is able to kill people based off of how they want him. This seems to be one way in which his command is fulfilled. Yet, there has to be more because Nightblood does so much more than just kill bad guys, or have bad guys kill themselves. With him, the effect of investiture is intriguing. In the two instance we see of him, he destroys investiture. He doesn't change it. In Warbreaker, color is used to access their breaths and commands. He destroys color. It does not return, and clearly the breaths do not either. In SA, he absorbs the stormlight whereas every single instance of stormlight use we see it become released back to the world to be recycled. It seems to me (I could be very wrong) that he is destroying investiture. This plus the fact that Surgebinding destroyed the world of the humans makes me think that their is something going on with investiture. Now I know that investiture is everything, so I doubt it's purely evil but there is something about it that causes Nightblood to destroy it the way he does. Anyway, there you go. I could be way off I know this was just something I wanted other thoughts on.
  18. So I created an account just so I could pose this questions to everyone. Be warned, Oathbringer spoilers here! ---- We now have scenes from Oathbringer (as well as WoB) demonstrating the use of one type of investiture to fuel a different off world sub-type of magic (ex. Szeth using stormlight to fuel Nightblood rather than breath). Now that Hoid is Knight Radiant in addition to a fully powered lerasium mistborn what sort of effect would stormlight have fueling allomancy? We see Kaladain receive a renewing supply of energy flying at the front of the everstorm and Szeth able to unleash the full effects of Nightblood without having to utilize biochromatic breath. Would stormlight act as a "metal supply" for Hoid? And if so, would it also potentially fuel him with an "atium reserve", possibly even a renewing one if he was near the everstorm? Conversely what sort of effect would metal vials have fueling surgebinding?
  19. I was thinking about copperclouds, as in the smokers themselves, and I know there have been discussions about how copper allomancy interacts/blocks various forms of investiture detection, but what about direct use of investiture on someone who is burning copper. We know that someone burning copper cannot be affected by emotional allomancy, but my question is whether or not someone burning copper could be affected by surgebinding or aons (or other forms of investiture) directly. I think that probably they can't based on the fact that emotional allomancy doesn't work on them, but what do you all think? Okay, I don't know if anyone has really discussed this before or if there are WoB on it, so if there are, please let me know.
  20. You know how Shards' intents influence the personalities of their Vessels? Can large enough Splinters have a similar effect on their hosts?
  21. I feel like I should know the answer to this, but I don't, so, here goes. What is the other Windrunner surge, after gravity?
  22. To preface, part of this theory is predicted on another on of my theories that stone can hold investiture. You can see more information here, but it is on the Oathbringer spoiler board so be properly forewarned before following the link, Oathbringer spoilers inside. So I think, assuming that isn't incorrect, that Cultivation is similar to Autonomy in that her investiture is tied to sunlight. First off, it just makes sense thematically. Cultivation is usually tied to farming and the growth of plants, and photosynthesis and sunlight is central to this process. Going into actual evidence though, I've got a few things I want to present. The first is the most obvious. I'm fairly sure it's a general consensus that Dalinar's vision at the end of WoR is from Cultivation. The beginning is in darkness, the end of the description is heavily based in sensations of warmth and light. Next, and I went into this a little bit with my other thread, we have Tien and his rocks, and how they always cheer up Kaladin. It think that Tien had a naturally close connection to Cultivation and was able to somehow find rocks that we're able to store her investiture in it. I won't provide the examples of the rocks cheering Kaladin up, but instead, the specific quote where Tien mentions the light changing the rocks color and illuminating strata. I think it's very like Brandon to hide the truth in both a flippant comment and the mouth of a babe. Finally, and I think this the strongest evidence, we come to Szeth at Urithuru. In Dalinar's vision in WoK, the radiant mentions that fighting hurts the soul, or at least that's the assumption I draw from the passage. This brings me to Szeth, where we see a clear demonstration of the damage over the course of the books. This brings us to Urithuru. Now while it is only one line, I think it is a fair conjecture to assume that the reason the damage recedes in the sunlight is because if cultivations influence in the context of other clues. Any thoughts?
  23. So as I read more Sanderson books I've seem to notice a trend. Each world has seem to split their investiture into 3 "powers" for the world. I was theorising that each of these powers is based of the 3 realms. The real world (not sure it's actual name), cognitive and spiritual. I've tried to list each worlds power based of the realm i feel it fits best. I'd like to know if you think this works or am I reading to much into it. Scadrial-Allomancy real world Feurchemy-cognitive (put into metal) Hemalurgy- spiritual Nalthisis-breath real world Nightblood-cognitive world Spiritual world not yet shown? Or the Gods reborn Sel-dar kor real world Aon dor-cognitive (a splinter object) Forgery-Spiritual (messing with the soul of an item/person) Roshar- surgebindings Cognitve-spren Spiritual-shard blades Roshar I had some trouble with. I haven't read ars arcanum yet so don't have the smaller worlds.
  24. Intro A new WoB was just recenly posted on the forums and I wanted to write up my thoughts on it, including a theory that has been in my head for a while. Let me know what you guys think! New WoB A sharder ( @Bugsy6912) recently posted on the 17th Shard Discord a WoB that he had gotten. Read it below: Analysis+Theory This is a super interesting Realmatics question. We dont really have much information on how time works in the Spiritual Realm or the Cognitive realm, so this answer was unexpected. One magic system that I believe does touch on how time works in other Realms is Allomancy. Obviously metals like Electrum and Atium interact with time on different realms, but so does Gold and Malatium. The passages we've seen with allomancers burning gold have been very interesting. I've started seeing interesting patterns between these scenes with some characters in Stormlight. Read the below Miles quote: Now compare that to the below Shallan and Kaladin passages: In the first two you can notice a distinct similarity in the prose and syntax used in both quotes. There is a kind of "self labeling" going on between both people, but one is burning gold and the other isnt. I think that this is because the fundamentals of gold may function based on the fundamentals that the above WoB hints at, time interacting with investiture, and that this is why we see Kaladin, an invested being, having his Cognitive filter possibly being distorted by investiture. Gold also definitely seems to work this way. My theoy is that the Connections that are snapped into one's Spiritual aspect allow for a kind of meshing, caused by the extra investiture, between one's Spiritual aspect, Cogntive aspect, and how the two are affected by this dilation from the investiture. End This is super heavy crackpot, and not very edited as this WoB was posted just ealier today, but I think it Connects some of my ideas on how the Cosmere works. Let me know what holes you guy see in it and what your opinions are!
