[Bands Spoilers] Having the has Sazed a Metal?
Ari replied to NeutroniumAlchemist's topic in Mistborn
Can't be the second one. Sazed would know what the Alien God metal was if it were Harmonium. -
It would allow for some pretty awesome jumps, slowed only by air resistance.

[Secret History spoilers] Did we just get another Shard named?
Ari replied to PallonianFire's topic in Mistborn
What you're talking about would probably be better named Determination, however. That's the thing, for every Shard intent I can think of that Fortune could represent, there are much better synonyms that would make a better Shard name. I'm pretty sure they were either talking about the Feruchemical attribute, or a similar effect in a different magic system. -
Are you sure the Geodes aren't the small wells Brandon was referring to?
-
The fact that we're actually sure that it's Jasnah that we saw?
-
Assuming Crashers are typically rare may not be a safe assumption. It is entirely possible that for various reasons Wax is a statistical anomaly, and that either Crashers are rarer than average, or that they just haven't cropped up as much as the comparative rarity of Twinborn, Skimmers, and Coinshots would suggest that they should. I'd say "around 800 Twinborn in all of time" is probably a good lower limit to start with.
-
It could be quite relevant to things like using Aluminium to unlock metalminds, storing senses, or other qualities that can be safely stored completely, or that are actually desirable to store. (eg. using an Ironmind to become fully weightless)
-
Odium has managed to Invest some significant power on Roshar, although possibly not as much as Preservation or Ruin did on Scadrial. It would seem likely that if he's Invested enough to power Everstorms, have his own category of Spren, and his own magic system, it's likely it's entangle to some degree with the other two. This may, however, mean that there's only three Systems- the Honour/Cultivation one, the Odium one, and the All Three Shards one.
-
It's likely they're just talking about the fact that the soul moves briefly to the Cognitive and then Beyond, both of which could be called other Realms. I didn't ascribe any significance to it either.
-
Good catch, thankyou for translating! You could potentially interpret "the Onemetal" to mean any of the Godmetals, however given the comments about Preservation and Ruin always being one... that seems like a pretty strong push for Ettmetal being Harmonium. Not sure if that necessarily makes it make sense as the title metal, but it seems a lot more possible if Harmonium and Ettmetal are the same thing.

Keep in mind your Feruchemist or Trueself/Soulbearer double-Ferring needs to give your Knight Radiant (or other investiture user) both a Feruchemical Nicrosil-nicrosilmind and a Feruchemical Aluminium-nicrosilmind, and they need Aluminium and Nicrosil to make into metalminds of their own. (Aluminium just to dump their identity into, so unless their Aluminiumind is useful for something, it can be melted down and forged into a gun or something. Or it can be an aluminium gun. Whatever.) You can't just hand them a Nicrosilmind and have them store their Investiture without storing Aluminium otherwise they'll create a medallion only they can use. I'm pretty sure you can't store Connection to a specific planet in a way that unlocks the metalmind for other people to use- BoM makes it clear when Marasi tries to use the Connection medallion that storing Identity and Connection at the same time results in blank connection that grips onto the specific area you're currently in. (Presumably because the specific place you're Connected to is part of your Identity, so the process of unlocking a metalmind makes the Connection generic, or "blank", and it simply defaults to the area the tapper is in) So if you need Connection to hack investiture this way, unlocked Feruchemy can only do it when you're on the appropriate planet to use the magic anyway. So if Hoid's hacking his identity, he's not doing it using unlocked metalminds. It's entirely possible there's another way to hack your Connection that we haven't run into yet, or that there's a way around the Catch 22 that needing to store Identity to make the metalmind, and that Identity-storing maing the Connection generic that you want to be specific.

Shardtrowels!

Stronger Feruchemists can weaken themselves further than usual when storing, building up their stores faster. IIRC, the amount of capacity a metalmind has for feruchemical charge is just about its size, isn't it?

If the Sovereign is Kelsier, (I'm not convinced as to who it is just yet) the only way I can see him making a connection to the Physical realm is through putting his identity and memories in a spike, which would presumably have to involve shenanigans with the cognitive reflection of a spike that Kelsier knew was going to be placed in a usable body. It's already getting pretty implausible to be honest. And then, he'd have to sort that out soon enough after the Catacendre to save the Malwish and other southern Scadrians, with no help from Harmony, who is off being a terrible liar somewhere else.

The Ghostbloods and their origins [Bands and Secret History spoilers]
Ari replied to Blightsong's topic in Mistborn
Ghostbloods is certainly a good name for an organisation with feelers into the Cognitive realm. I don't think, however, that necessarily means that Kelsier founded them. GIven their casual attitude to murder in order to qualify, (which Kelsier would have reserved for all but the best of nobles, rather than allowing within his crew) and their philosophy about hunter and prey, they don't really seem to have any influence from Kelsier in how they function. -
I may have to check this to be sure, but wasn't there some implication that Senna was a lost love? In which case, most likely not a Shardholder.

(Secret History Spoilers) Issues with Geometry?
Ari replied to TruthlessofNalthis's topic in Mistborn
Nope. SH straight up contradicts this- the suns are the Shards' power shining down from the Spiritual realm. You're probably on to something there, if I were constructing the rules myself, that seems like a good out for the "how do you avoid splitting a continent" problem. It just means you're not going to get a perfectly regular shape in flattening a planet, but then again, you can just fill that in with the Expanse anyway. Mercator is a terrible projection for anything other than sailing, which is the reason why it's so popular- flat maps preserving latitude and longitude were ideal for sailors, who had the most practical use for maps back in the day. The side-effect of inflating the landmasses in the northern hemisphere was completely unintended, and an accident of the fact that the southern hemisphere only really has Antartica close to its pole. I imagine the answer to what projection method you'd use is "however people think about their world when it's flat." That may not be a method like Mercator in civilisations that don't have a lot of sea trade. -
You've got some spoiler-free answers relating to question (1) and (3). I saw a spoiler-based answer to (2) above, but I think you probably want one that doesn't reveal too much. You basically want to know what series of Brandon's are set in the same universe (The Cosmere) that aren't Mistborn. Other than the Stormlight Archive, you need to read closely to even spot the involvement of Shards in the rest of his series to date. These are, grouped by series: Elantris, the bonus short story Hope of Elantris on Brandon's website, and The Emperor's soul. Elantris is Brandon's earliest work, so might be a little rougher around the edges than Mistborn. Warbreaker, which is a full novel, and Brandon offers it for free on his website so people can try his work before buying it. The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, which are the first two volumes of the Stormlight Archive. These books feature a plot that involves Shards in similar ways to the original Mistborn trilogy. They're also the most Cosmere-aware series that Brandon's published thus far, thus in my opinion, if you're going to read everything, you should read these last. There's also a graphic novel expected sometime this year called White Sand, which Brandon gave over an unfinished version of his book White Sand in order to create. A bit uncertain on the timeframe for that one. There are also two cosmere novellas set on worlds without Shards. These are Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell (I know, it's a long title) and Sixth of Dusk. They're interesting stories worth reading, and both have very small hints about a couple things going on in the larger Cosmere.

It could be an extremely powerful awakener. It could also be that dying with investiture sitting around in your metalminds has certain consequences...
-
At the very least, whoever the Sovereign is, they've been heavily influenced by Kelsier (or by Spook who was influenced by Kelsier) and wanted to evoke his image. I would not automatically assume they actually are Kelsier. Given the timeframe that they'd need to be in Southern Scadrial, Marsh is actually a really good candidate to go and help them. He had lost one of his eye spikes in HoA, and could have found out the relevant Feruchemical trick from Harmony, who would want to square the circle of repairing the damage to the planet, while not harming the Southerners.

I will preface this by saying that I was also confused when I was reading the book, mainly because I had no idea that storing Investiture would work this way until I read BoM. How complicated this gets depends on how nicrosilminds work. I expect that they work like tinminds, and you need a seperate nicrosilmind for each Misting or Ferring ability. (that's 32 of the things embedded in that spearhead, lol, plus another 15 metalminds to be able to use the feruchemical abilities) It's possible you can store ALL your investiture in a Nicrosilmind, but then you'd most likely have the Malwish using medallions that made them full feruchemists instead. You need at least three powers to create a nicrosilmind that can be used by anyone, assuming the difference between the unlocked goldmind and the medallions the Malwish were using is just that the medallions used a nicrosilmind rather than a goldmind. Either you need a Feruchemist creating their own nicrosilminds to grant the relevant powers, or you need to use Hemalurgy. I rather suspect that they've had all their Feruchemists creating a store of unlocked nicrosilminds that grant Nicrosil and Aluminium Feruchemy, rather than going around spiking all their Trueselfs and Soulbearers. We have no evidence that southern Scadrians are even aware of Hemalurgy. From there, creating medallions that grant Allomancy is comparatively straightforward. You find a Twinborn that is either a Trueself or a Soulbearer. You give them the relevant medallion so that they have both the necessary Feruchemical powers. They then store their identity in an Aluminiummind, while storing their Allomancy in a new nicrosilmind. Creating the double metalmind medallions is both easier, and harder. The most straightforward way is to simply have a Feruchemist do both parts, but that seems almost wasteful. You could also have a Feruchemist (or a spiked Ferring who is now both a Trueself and Soulbearer) create an Aluminium-feruchemy nicrosilmind, and a nicrosilmind edging for the medallion storing the type of feruchemy you want accessible. You pass the Aluminium-feruchemy nicrosilmind to a ferring, who then creates an unlocked metalmind. Bonus points if they're a compounding twinborn, as they don't need to use much of the nicrosilmind in order to make the inner part of the medallion. If nicrosilminds work how I think, the process adds an addition nicrosilmind and an additional Ferring for each extra Feruchemical store you add to a medalion. So you need at least three people to craft those heat-and-connection medallions. edit: I also just had the really weird thought while wondering about how this applies to other magic systems that creating a nicrosil Feruchemy nicrosilmind must be very slow because you have to balance keeping enough of your investiture to be able to still store investiture at an acceptable speed. I hope they have Nicrosil compounders for that.

If the colour red is relevant, (we have no idea that it is, Sazed may have just chosen red because it's menacing, and whatever external force is attacking Scadrial isn't relevant to the Voidbringer that's strolling around killing Set members) the two chief suspects are either Odium, or whatever's causing the Red Rip.

I'm pretty sure we've seen people handle Atium in the rain, so I don't think it can be Ettmetal. I'd have to re-read Era 1 to be sure though. I'd say the Lost Metal is either Atium or Ettmetal. Harmonium, to our knowledge so far, hasn't existed yet, so it can't be lost. Lerasium could be technically lost, although it doesn't really seem to be known about enough to consider it a "lost metal" in a way dramatic enough to merit a book title. Ettmetal could potentially be a lost metal depending on what it actually is. But that's a bit more of a long shot. I'm 75% that we'll be seeing some sort of Atium Hunt going on. (Which will be interesting, as it'll only be Seers who can burn it this time, instead of Mistborn, so the biggest use for Atium would be to Atium compounders...)

[Bands of mourning spoils tho m8] The power of a fullborn
Ari replied to Full Metal Rithmatist's topic in Mistborn
It's technically possible given the essentially circular nature of the powers of the Knights Radiant. It's also possible that the whole Knights Radiant system is an emergent property of Cultivation and Honour's powers mixing. -
It makes it easier to push on objects more forcefully because you're harder to move, being heavier. I don't see how it would make it easier to push on Invested objects, however. It is definitely a combination of being a Lerasium Mistborn, (whether he actually swallowed Lerasium is irrelevant- he attuned himself to Allomancy just as strongly) and Nicrosil compounding. (For the ridiculous Soothing he used, it would make no difference how Nicrosilminds work. He can't have used Duralumin though, as he didn't swallow any metals between waves) Elend never did the ridiculously powerful emotional Allomancy the Lord Ruler used, which would have been very useful in controlling the Koloss without using Duralumin. How? It basically looks like steel. It would have been just another metalmind. Besides, if he's compounding Nicrosil, they wouldn't have been bracers. Most likely earrings or rings that would be easy to swallow. And he doesn't have to wear them around. He can store Investiture when he's safely in Kredik Shaw, and if he anticipates needing strong magic, swallow a metalmind to burn when he want a burst of extra power.
