Shadesmar is the Cognitive reflection of Roshar, so technically you can't exit into space from Shadesmar even if it is possible to do so from the Cognitive Realm in general. Probably a better question would be if it's possible to drop out of the Cognitive Realm if you enter it physically without using a perpendicularity.

Aluminium and silver are inert to investiture. I would think it would make more sense as armour or a shielding system than as a weapon itself. If Shattering happens through rapid investiture drain, what you're really looking for as the weapon is some sort of innate investiture equivalent to allomantic Chromium so you could leech away Adonalsium's power. I'm not convinced that's how Shattering works, however.

In addition to the WoB it just makes sense when you know that Odium's goal is to shatter all 15 other shards, and that he refuses to take up any of the others himself that he would be worried about any Vessel containing two shards at once.
-
Did we get a WoB on this or something? I mean, it makes intuitive sense, I just didn't know it was confirmed.

You should in fact be thinking Shardblades in that case. Being physical metal manifestations of Spren, they're technically made of tanavastium. No idea what Shardplate is atm.

A good clue as to what's going on is that in Well of Ages we have an in-world comment by Vin that silver is also allomantically inert, (exactly the same term later used for aluminum, which makes me wonder why Silver isn't equally as rare and expensive...) and can't be Pushed or Pulled, and silver does some pretty interesting things in Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell. I would assume aluminum would have similar effects if they had access to it. If so, it can't be anything relating to the alloying process, as silver is a chemical element.

Except we know none of the other shards are physically present on Scadrial right now, so that's not happening. Wheras sparing some investiture to make solid into a metal is rather easy, if you have the co-operation of the Shard in question.

You may want to edit or delete that quoted part of my post, I realised on reading it that it contains spoilers that shouldn't be on this board just yet.- 47 replies

We have WoB that it was no accident which Vessel took which Shard. Whether it was predetermined or decided just after the Shattering but before they took up their powers, well, that's open for speculation. We know that Hoid existed at the time of the Shattering. I don't think we necessarily know the degree to which he was involved (or not) just yet.
-
It's basically explaining that in order to allow a Shard to talk to people, they need to have access to a power that fundamentally doesn't try to heal the cracks in their spiritwebs. Preservation as a power would want to repair those cracks, so attempting to communicate through that power is impossible- it stops up the spiritual cracks instead of seeping through. As Ruin wants to widen the cracks, that shard can communicate with people open to Investiture just fine.
-
I'm not sure why you seem confused here, as you seem to have answered your own question that it doesn't guarantee you a connection to Preservation. It might push you in that direction, sure, but that's not the same thing. Because Kelsier is a noob at being a ghost? I'd imagine it's somewhat different for someone physically in the cognitive realm to deliver a beatdown than it is for a newly-minted Cognitive Shadow to do so.
-
It's possibly not even that they're individually dangerous (at least not to the type of people and ghosts likely to wander around the Expanses) so much as that there are so many of them.

[Secret History spoilers] Did we just get another Shard named?
Ari replied to PallonianFire's topic in Mistborn
OK, the rest of us will just politely point out the amazing coincidence that both of the shards opposing their Intents most directly were shattered on Sel, and that you would expect Odium would want some backup on his side to shatter two shards at once. Just because Odium hates everything and everyone doesn't mean he can't have an ally of convenience. Likewise, a Shard that sees the other shards as meddling oppressors of their people would probably be very keen to see a lot of them Shattered. There are very straightforward motivations for them to be working together. (Especially if Autonomy has nobody else he's willing to work with to get rid of what he views as the oppressive Shards) They've probably got a big list of targets they'll take out before they part ways. Another thing to consider is what happens to the Voidbringers in their voidforms if Odium does get defeated... It's entirely possible that Odium is only the villain of the first half of the Stormlight Archive. (I'll admit I don't see it as a likely twist narratively speaking, but it is possible...) -
I'd like to quickly point out the difference between "a main character", which the WoB uses, and "the main character," which this thread uses. Hoid could be a main character in the same sense Eshonai is a main character in the first half of the Stormlight Archive, or he could be one in the sense that Dalinar is. We have no guarantee as to him being the main focus of that trilogy, even though it will certainly act as the capstone to his story.
-
Yeah no, they can't have taken any such binding oath if you take the actions of Ruin and Odium into account, and Dominion, based on his followers, seems to largely be just as bad.
-
No it's not, he could just throw in a RAFO to make you think there's some significance to whether Kelsier punches Shardvessels.

theory Voidbringers, the Knights Radiant, and Gavilar
Ari replied to DrakeMarshall's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Except we know from Jasnah's research of Shadesmar that the return of the Knights Radiant is a reaction to the Desolations, not a cause of it. Certain factions (most notably the Skybreakers and Diagrammists) are convinced otherwise, but they are definitely incorrect. I'm pretty sure there's also WoB on that too. We do not know that Odium is free after the first five books. We don't know what state he was in when he wrote the diagram as we've not really heard anything that gives it away enough. There's all sorts of possibilities and pet theories, none of them with enough info to be proven just yet. He is definitely off the honourable path, as that path is essentially by definition reserved for those who have some moral compatibility with the Knights Radiant I'm pretty convinced that Taravangian is using the wrong half of his gift and has had his extreme intelligence subtly manipulated by Odium. I could be wrong and he could have figured everything out on his own, but either way, he's definitely playing into Odium's hands in what he's doing.- 47 replies

No, we have WoB on this. The breath just powers the Endowment. You are copying a part of your mind that is focused on executing the Command.
-
You should really start a new thread if you want to discuss a topic this old and it's died a natural death, FYI. It's possible you replied not realising how long ago the thread was from, of course.
-
I'm not surprised, it seems like Adonalsium just works as a more cohesive version of a Shard, and to Shatter a Shard, you need to kill its Vessel.

Secret History only aligns with Mistborn Era 1, it stops right after the events of Hero of Ages. Also I think the only word we've had on Brandon is that it's on a similar timeline to what we are now calling Mistborn Era 4.
-
Focus may or may not be a term Brandon initiated, (I think it is his, but can't recall for sure- I know he's used other words for it before I started seeing focus thrown around) but the thing it describes was something Brandon told us about.
-
Well... kind of? You have to get into the mechanics of understanding how it works (endowing a copy of your mind focusing on a simple Command to an inanimate object or dead flesh) before it becomes obvious. And much of how Endowment works is just as dependent on the Focus (the Command) and the Manifestation of the Investiture. (Colour) I would say it is aligned well with Endowment's Intent, but depends on enough other things that you couldn't come up with Awakening just from knowing its Shard was Endowment. Hemalurgy is a bit more guessable.
-
Pure speculation, I'm just saying that an entangling of all three Shard's powers is as likely as an entangling of Cultivation and Odium and an entangling of Honour and Odium. And of course, it could be that we have all three.

Jasnah talks about how dangerous Shadesmar is without investiture with Shallan. I doubt her fears are unfounded- it's possible the dangers are specific to Shadesmar and that places with less manifest Investiture thrown around like Scadrial are more benign. (In fact, to some degree, I expect that to be the case) I suspect you need Investiture to reach a Perpendicularity safely. I don't expect you need it (or at least not much of it) to travel the Expanse between cognitive reflections of worlds.
