[Theory] The Stormfather is Tanavast's Cognitive Shadow
Aleksiel replied to WeiryWriter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Could you explain the difference, please? As a non-native English speaker, I don't understand the significance of using (or not) the word 'way' here. -
I dislike what Kaladin described as Shallan trying too hard. She's always trying to come up with a wisecrack or word-game or whatever. That isn't what wins arguments in my book and turning every single sentence into something that's supposed to be witty annoys me more than it entertains me. It's fun and cool when used at times, but all the time? Not my cup of tea. Yes, I get due to her life she tries to look everything on the bright side, always trying to laugh at things. It just doesn't work for me. And I'm still not over her character representing the attribute of honesty. I might accept it in the future, but her 'artistic interpretations' or whatever you choose to call them aren't my thing. I'm more of a straight forwardness fan and both Kaladin and Dalinar are my type of honesty, Aes Sedai's truths work for me, but so far Shallan's representing honesty just doesn't.

I just saw this on Brandon's facebook page. Enjoy!

I think it was Renarin, giving how he wrote at the end of WoR. He had access to Dalinar, illumination surge to hide his presence. The only time the writing appeared not a while after a highstorm, but are already there when Dalinar is conscious again, is when Navani wasn't with him. However, Renarin still had glasses when the writings first appeared, which isn't in favor of this theory because it might mean he was not a surgebinder at that point and therefore wasn't writing the glyphs. Though this can be explained with his visions being a passive non-stormlight consuming ability, meaning he could have visions without healing. We saw from both Kaladin and Shallan's PoVs, it's not easy to invest at first when you don't know how it works.

I compared Syl to the character Genie, not to the voice-actor, so not really since it was mostly to point Kal and Al both have a non-human companion giving them powers
-
They'll be like Aladdin and Jasmine. Their names are close enough, she'a princess and he's a poor guy with a genie/spren. Ship confirmed!

I meant being provoked at the very moment it happened. I don't know if controlling one's temper has any value to KR, Willshapers suddenly sounded like the kind of people who act on whims. Also, I don't think Moash showed much control over his temper considering how he handled Kaladin, but I suppose it can be read either way. So, my biggest argument against Moash being a surgebinder is what he did (or tried) to Kal. I think it was pretty clear he would have killed him if Kaladin didn't find the Words, thus his powers. And murdering your friend is not KR-ish.

I don't know much about the middle ages, but I think 14 was acceptable age to get married then. Wasn't Laral 15 when Roshone made her his betrothed and Lirin said it was common for lighteyes men to marry very young girls? Not that I think Kal would such a thing. But he and Lift could be a nice match in later books, may be at the end of the first half depending how much time is between WoR and SA 5. I'm not a Kalift shipper, just saying it ain't off the table.
-
Moash saved Kal's life in WoK (he almost got ran over by a horse on a bridgerun). The chapter in which Dalinar told Kal about the Roshone affair is called 'The one who killed promises'. Syl and his surgebinding were withdrawn from Kal when the assassination attempt happened, but he said the Words and stretched his hand, making the storm respond (figuratively).
-
It's debatable whether Moash's actions were similiar to Adolin's. I don't think we can draw a parallel here. Adolin killed Sadeas when provoked without plotting it and Moash not only conspired against Elhokar, but tried to kill him along with his friend and commander Kaladin. Jasnah has plotted and ordered assassinations, so that likely isn't be considered against the First Words, but trying to kill a friend... Now that's something else. I don't think Moash will be a surgebinder any time soon just because of this.
-
Which makes Lift as old as Sansa when she married Tyrion, so there's a precedent... They're quite alike Lift and Kaladin - both caring for those nobody else spears even a glance. If Kal had taken the path of the surgeon, he could have been an Edgedancer.
-
I think it's safe to say Jasnah and Shallan were only mentally in Shadesmar when soulcasting - Jasnah soulcasted that rock in the palace, then the thugs while being physically present both times in Shallan's PoV. I suspect it's the transportation surge that allows physical entrance to Shadesmar; I think Brandon RAFO-ed if Shallan or anyone with only the transformation surge could physically go into the Cognitive realm.

It would have been nice to see Regrowth doing more than the standard self-stormlight healing and Kaladin could have had a reason to rethink his view on lighteyes. It still like it the way it was, though it would have been interesting to see Kal having to deal with one hand for more than a paragraph. I'm just saying it would have been a nice plot twist and give Renarin a bigger role in the story. At least for me it would have been more impressive if Renarin showed his abilities that way.

I would have preferred it if Renarin was the one who healed Kaladin's hand at the end of WoR. It would have been more awesome and unexpected.

I think an interesting and important question is why Gavilar was having those visions. The Desolation came because of the Parshendi desperation to win the war that began with Gavilar's death. If Gavilar didn't have the visions, the Parshendi wouldn't have killed him and started the same war that began the Desolation. Was it a self-fulfilling prophecy or is there something more? Would a Desolation still have come without the war? Because this is what Gavilar having the same visions as Dalinar implies. Yet the reason behind the Desolation so far seems to be these same visions... So I am inclined to believe Gavilar didn't see the same things as Dalinar. Why Gavilar never confided in his own brother is also an issue for me, that may or may not be resolved in Dalinar's flashbacks. I agree so far it seems to be implied that Gavilar wanted to begin a Desolation, which likely means he really didn't, because it's Brandon's style to deceive us using unreliable narrators.

How does Shallan's making the illusion of being Amaram fit into this?

Honor's Champion? (Slight Mistborn Spoilers)
Aleksiel replied to The Ja's topic in Stormlight Archive
Honor's exact words are: He isn't saying He gets a champion as well, but whoever sees the visions must appoint one. -
[Theory] It has been foreshadowed that Adolin will be a Radiant.
Aleksiel replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
He claimed to feel the Thrill in her, but that is not the same imo. We didn't get Eshonai's PoV and we can't know if Adolin was mistaken or not. -
[Theory] It has been foreshadowed that Adolin will be a Radiant.
Aleksiel replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
Since we don't know what attracts Nergaoul, it's too soon to conclude a potential Radiant would push him away. May be Nergaoul was in Jah Keved at the time. Did anyone is the Shattered Plains felt the Thrill at that point? There was no mention of Zahel not going to the arena. Spren's voice manifesting as a distant voice from the crowd? May be, may be not. Adolin had some interesting inner thoughts in italic that helped him in other cases like 'Duck' in his fight with Szeth, which is different from the dueling scene. I suppose we'll see. edit: wrong name -
A critical view of morality in Words of Radiance
Aleksiel replied to Sasukerinnegan's topic in Stormlight Archive
I wouldn't call it's ridiculous. Both moral and law vary among countries, cultures, ages, etc. A law is a fact, doesn't matter if it's a good or a bad law, it just is. And law is the same for everyone in the same country, whereas moral depends on the individual. I'll even go further and say it's the Windrunners who could be ridiculous. Breaking or following a law is a fact that can be proven; something outside one's perspective, so on most matters Skybreakers would be able to agree with each other. Whereas the Windrunners could basically start their own civil war over a small event, because there could be as many opinions on what's right to do about it as there are Widnrunners. -
[Theory] It has been foreshadowed that Adolin will be a Radiant.
Aleksiel replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
Zahel is Adolin and Renarin's swordmaster, why wouldn't he be at the arena? That duel was the event of the year, almost everyone was there. What makes you think Zahel wasn't? Yes, it wasn't stated before Adolin heard his voice, but it makes more sense for Zahel to go be at the arena rather than for him not to be there. So, the way I see it was needed to be said if Zahel wasn't there, not if he was. I don't think it was said Zahel didn't watch duels. -
Syl took the form of a horse when Kaladin rode on one, so I really doubt she would have done it if horses were somehow of Odium

OK. Shallan is one KR step ahead of Kaladen per WoB

Not everything Kal dislikes is evil

Agreed. However, Renarin fits very well the personality description of the Truthwatchers, so I wonder if the attributes themselves are really what determines one's Order. Perhaps having Truthwather's character traits will lead him to be learned and giving? But that's not good enough for me, honestly. Yes, Dustbringers were obviously warriors, but Renarin wanted to be a warrior and has expressed their divine attributes, so I am really baffled why Brandon didn't make him a Dustbringer. If Brandon just needed a Truthwatcher for the plot, he could have made Navani one. Then it would have been easier to mislead everyone that Dalinar was truly the one writing the glyphs.
