The Ghostblood's motives regarding Amaram
Aleksiel replied to Fifth of Daybreak's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm skeptical whether it really was the Ghostbloods with that poisoned dart. It looks too sloppy for their style or at least not how I imagine them. On the other hand, the way they tried to kill Jasnah lacked style as well. It's unclear if Amaram knew about them when he was almost killed by Helaran. He didn't consider them, but it might hint they used to be allies. But they had little prior knowledge of Amaram's plan before Shallan spied on him. Amaram speaks of having an understanding with Sadeas about the goal and the use of honorableness methods for it. However the Ghostbloods showed no interest in Sadeas. For now, I think their interest isn't because of Amaram himself, but they aim to weaken someone else through his death. Perhaps that what-was-his-name man Amaram wrote to before he went to get Taln. So, the Ghostbloods want to take the Sons of Honor out of the equation.- 33 replies

If transportation can be used to appear in mid air (I don't see why not, but there's not enough information yet), may be a Willshaper could use cohesion for support, which arguably counts as flying.

Two Orders have gravitation surge. I don't know if any other surge can create a similar effect, so most likely only Windrunners and Skybreakers fly.

Really? I thought if a Radiant breaks his oaths without the spren in Shardblade, then it just returns to Shadesmar or something, but doesn't end up as a dead Blade. The Recreance wouldn't have be considered a big deal and there would have been thousands of Blades, if every dead Radiant left behind Shards. The spren of a dead Radiant is free to bond with someone else, unless that Radiant purposely left his/her spren as a Blade and broke the oaths.

I wonder why the gate on the Shattered Plains was opened. Szeth seemed to know about it, so did he somehow opened it with the Honorblade? Perhaps it will be the key to opening the rest of the gates when regular Shardblades have failed to do so.

I am doubtful if there's a connection between the two. Kaladin meets the Stromfather, but what Dalinar experiences isn't of him. Dalinar notes a familiar light and sensation, without being able to remember why it's familiar. I've been toying with the idea of Dalinar's last non-Stormfather vision is related to the Nightwatcher, but I really can't back it up with anything solid. Warm light.. Doesn't seem to be like the distant dark sun of the cognitive realm, so may be the spiritual? Kaladin's experiences with the Stormfather and the darkness never contained any of his memories. So, I think those are two different places. One is dark and with the Stormfather, the other has warmth and light.

For I reason I can't explain, I thought Kholinar's oathgate was outside the city. I couldn't find the quote about Jasnah saying/notes it was locked. If it's in the city, then the center seems the most logical choice.

I wouldn't say Kaladin 'loved to hate'. He doesn't hate Elhokar. He was in unstable state of mind and got influenced by his best friend and Dalinar and Elhokar's treatments. Note that Kal doesn't go ahead to try and murder Amaram, he tries to get justice the only way he could think of. Then Elhokar over-reacted, Dalinar dismissed him (for all he knew). After all this, in his darkest deepest depression, Kal convinced himself everything will be better without Elhokar. I don't see a 'love to hate' motif here.

This kind of reminds me of Gandalf - he used his magic to save the fellowship once, then disappeared, creating a bigger problem for the group. Kaladin used his skills to save young boys and his brightlord, but that only created a bigger problem, because he got enslaved and so on. It's an interesting comparison I haven't thought of. Until Kal's extraordinary skills were explained, he couldn't use them to solve a problem without creating a bigger one. Fits one of Brandon's magic laws.

Incorrect. He shared his plan with them. It's unclear if he knew what it would mean to them. Considering how little alethi knew about the parshendi, my educated guess is he didn't know. Alethi don't know the connection between spren and parshfroms before Rlain explained it to Dalinar. What we know is that Parshedni never tried to resolve the matter in a non-violent way. They didn't try to talk Gavilar out of his plan, they murdered him. The alethi wanted an explanation and got dead messengers instead. For all they know, the Parshedni killed unprovoked their king on the night of the celebrated peace between them. In the light of that, their declaration of war is perfectly understandable.
-
I disagree. First, we don't know what Gavilar wanted to do. If Gavilar knew he was 'bringing back the Parshendi gods', he would have never shared this information with them. You have no grounds to claim that if he knew he'd harm the Parshendi, he'd still would have done it. Second, the Parshendi didn't tell Gavilar what whatever he was going to do, would do to them. They didn't say a word. Instead, they assassinated him without explaining their reasons to anyone. Dalinar mentioned they'd send messengers to talk to the Parshendi after the assassination and they killed all of them. What were the alethi to think and do?

Kaladin Stormblessed and the Thousand Squires! Suddenly Lews Therin and the Hundred Companions pale in comparison.

Why do you think each of the rest 8 Orders had 150 Radiants? For all we know, Windrunners and Stonewards could have had the largest number.

I think Renarin doesn't have a bond before WoR. His eyesight heals after the first third of the book, so his bond with Glys is fairly new. Brandon likes foreshadowing (which is why reviving Szeth took me by surprise), so it's his style to show us re-growth before it solves any problem. It could also be meant to hint there will be a second Truthwatcher/Edgedancer in the next book.
-
Perhaps Ym's spren later formed a bond with Renarin. Not all spren are prohibited to come to Roshar. So, it's understandable to have only one honorsper, but it's also reasonable to think there will be more than one Edgedancer (for example) because Wyndle was send and it's not stated he'd be the only one. Ym's interlude is before Lift's, right? May be it was intended to show us re-growth before it was used for awesomeness.Of course, Ym's interlude also served the purpose of getting a better idea who Darkness was.
-
Why do the wikis refer to Ym as a Truthwatcher?
Aleksiel replied to Elerubard's topic in Stormlight Archive
His chapter has two Vedev icons (whatever we call them), which is strange if he was a Truthwatcher. It's true his spren is nothing like Wyndle, but then- 37 replies

Every child seems great to their parents. Kaladin likely continued his medical practice in Amaram's army. Doing bandages and knowing herbs isn't that unimaginable and special. Of course he seems like a great surgeon to the rest of the Bridge Four, they have nobody to compare him to. Kaladin is very knowledgeable, he has good memory and analytic mind, but we haven't see him in much medical action. We don't really know if he could perform any complicated surgery. What we've seen him do (burning wounds to prevent infection, binding broken leg, etc) is to be expected of someone who had years of medical training regardless of their age.

Correct. Only the fourth sons and below could be warriors according to Rock, which sort of fits Jasnah's statistics of having three non-combat Radiants for every Radiant warrior.

Theory: Laral will be a Knight Radiant
Aleksiel replied to Glaring at the Survivor's topic in Stormlight Archive
You are right. Unfortunately, I don't think her situation will allow her to develop into a warrior. Yeah, a badass female Radiant fighter will be great to have. Also, some male/female friendship will be nice, too, because there isn't even one for now. So, if Laral fits both gaps, I'll be really happy. -
Theory: Laral will be a Knight Radiant
Aleksiel replied to Glaring at the Survivor's topic in Stormlight Archive
The thing about Stonewards is considering Taln is famous for fighting for lost causes, one of their Ideals is likely 'I will stand where others fail' (Brandon wrote it in someone's book as a future Words of an unknown Order) and I don't see Laral's situation as fitting. She will stand against Roshone when everyone else has failed to oppose him? Possible, but I imagened something more dramatic behind those Words. But I'd take her as a Stoneward. I just imagine them too battle orientated to fit the way I picture Laral. Well, I was exaggerating. Kell was broken till the end, he didn't got better imo, but that depends on how one views the character, so if you disagree, then I agree to disagree on this. Overcoming comes after the bond is formed, I didn't mean to imply Radiants got in some static unchangeable state once they swore their oaths, however I think something in their souls changes forever, like a scar that stays after the wound has healed. -
Theory: Laral will be a Knight Radiant
Aleksiel replied to Glaring at the Survivor's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yeah, Dalinar isn't winning any 'Dad of the year' contest anytime soon! Did Shallan overcome her brokenness by creativity? She went into denial and Actually, shouldn't a Radiant stay broken in order to maintain their Nahel-bond? Something like 'Once broken, forever broken'. Ouch. No wonder the Radiants of the past quiet. I don't see Laral as a Stoneward. They are supposed to put great importance on their attributes and she told Kaladin to fetch her betrothed food... She showed to be unreliable, but obedient. Too bad that's not a primary attribute. -

Aleksiel replied to Glaring at the Survivor's topic in Stormlight Archive
That certainly seems to be the case. Shallan used her brokenness for creativity, Kaladin as reason to protect. Joke aside, what primary attribute could Laral express? Could she be a potential Skybreaker? She's suffering a lot to do what is required of her like Szeth and the next book focuses on that Order. -
Theory: Laral will be a Knight Radiant

I'm enjoying it as well, that's why I continue According to coppermind (yes, I'm lazy) she passed away four years before Gavilar's assassination, which was six years prior WoK, thus making it ten years since she died. So he lost his mother when he was nine. Reason enough to be broken, especially if she died from a sickness/accident he witnessed. In the light if this discussion I must admit I actually find it more likely for Laral to be a proto-Radiant now than before we started it. -
I don't remember when Patter has claimed to have been attracted by her lies, however I don't think that's particularly helpful information. He considers figures of speech and metaphors to be lies. For all we know, she could have been drawing pictures of her ideal life and Pattern could have thought of it as a 'good lie'. All we know known of pre-bond Shallan is that her father was actually a caring person. Considering how her mother tried to kill her later on, she might have been the source of Shallan's brokenness by may be being cold and unmotherly towards her daughter, which is something that would break any child's heart, so why not the soul. Shallan's parents could have quarreled a lot. Such trivial (compared to other painful experiences) problems might have been enough to hurt her deep enough to make her withdraw into drawing, creating a better dream-like version of her family, which Pattern would likely call a lie.
