  1. +1 Thrawn. He would be awesome! However, the one thing that bugged me about the Thrawn books (the original Thrawn trilogy, at least) is that Thrawn only ever “wins” IIRC one battle- the one where he drops a bunch of cloaked asteroids in orbit around Coruscsnf. Every other time he goes up against the heroes the good guys end up winning due to some brilliant maneuver or twist of fate. If Thrawn was such a military genius the I would have liked to actually see him win every now and then. For me, I’d love to see Sylar from Heroes in the Cosmere. He was such a creative and awesome idea for a Villian! If you haven’t seen Heroes... (slight spoiler for Heroes season 1) So stick him in the Cosmere, let him witness Hemallurgy and figure out how it works, then set him loose. He’d make for an awesome sort of anti-Hoid super villain.
  2. You know, the funny thing about the “I only need X to be complete” is that there’s always just one more thing you need...
  3. Welcome to the game @MasterJack! I’ve been playing the game regularly for 4 years, and still loving it! I know of a couple other X-Wingers on the shard. Namely, @Haelbarde, @Ecthelion III, @Ookla the Philosopher, and @Shumei. In answer to your question, “what to buy next,” my advice is to do as @TheOoklaThatComesBefore and buy stuff used to begin with. It’s usually a great way to fill out your collection a bit for cheap. Check eBay or your local craigslist or Craigslist type service. If you don’t want to go that route, then this is my recommended purchase schedule: 1) buy a core set (sounds like you’ve already done that) 2) buy another core set- the core set is your best value for your dollar (MSRP), plus you’ll definitely want the extra dice, range rulers, and etc. There are two core sets, the original (red letters) and the force awakens (blue letters). If you buy one of each then you’ll get different ships and cards in each one, which is nice, but even if you buy two of the same set it will totally be worth it. And speaking of which, the Force Awakens core set is on sale on Amazon right now for a killer price. Yesterday it was $18, today it looks like it’s $21. 3) once you have two core sets, buy the ships you like. You’ll have a lot more fun playing with your favorite ships from the movies rather than buying some random ship that you’ve never heard of and whose name you can’t pronounce simply because someone on the interwebs told you it was competitive. At this stage, don’t worry about being competitive, play to have fun and learn and if you feel so inclined you can try out the competitive scene later. in other news, I actually stumbled across this thread because I was looking for somewhere to show off this Christmas present (which I sort of got for myself). I ordered it from Curled Paw Creatives on Etsy. The whole set cost less than $25- he didn’t even charge me extra for the custom symbols! Aren’t they pretty? The acrylic is a transparent gray, and I painted the symbols before removing the protective paper using a light blue and a silver/white mixture to (of course) mimic coins being steel-pushed. EDIT: I just asked, and he saved the files used to make these so if anyone else wants a set of Mistborn X-Wing templates just go to Curled Paw and ask (you’ll probably have to mention my user name).
  4. Thanks! and what does the timezone matter? Not everybody has to be logged on at the same time to play. As with any sort of forum game I expect a typical round of Cosmere Codenames to last at least a week or two, with turns taking a day or two each. That should give plenty of time for anyone in any time zone to pop in when is convenient for them and make a contribution to their team. The holiday-family stuff I understand. I actually wanted to post this a week ago but it took me this long to find the free time to write it up. Feel free to come back and sign up once the holidays are done- even if the round has started there’s no reason we can’t add players in mid-game.
  5. Game 1 I went ahead and populated the grid for the first game. As I did, I included links to each entry on coppermind.net, so if there is a codename that you aren't familiar with or don't remember you can just click the link to read up on it. Again, possible spoiler alert: The grid links to entries from Stormlight Archive (including stuff from Oathbringer), Sixth of the Dusk, White Sand, Legion, Elantris, Mistborn, The Emperor's Soul, and the Cosmere as a whole. If you don't feel comfortable reading a random wiki article or two about any of those series, then you may not want to proceed. Link to the google sheet. 7. So in my family we love the game Codenames, and I got to thinking how fun it would be to play a Brandon Sanderson themed version. And then it occurred to me, why not adapt it to play on the forums? Should be easy enough, so let’s take a crack at it, yeah? As for the nitty gritty: I’ve never played Codenames, what is it? Okay, I get how to play, but how are we going to Sanderson-ize it? Will there be spoilers for any of Brandon's books? Short Answer: Very Possibly. Play at your own risk! Long Answer: the codenames used in each game will not contain any spoilers for any of the books. However, they will be linked to their respective coppermind wiki entries, which can contain spoilers for Brandon's books. Also, I can't guarantee that the clues that the spymasters give and/or the teams' discussions won't contain spoilers. Again, Play at your own risk! I will try to post at the start of each game which of Brandon's books the codenames are drawn from for that game, so you can know if you need to avoid a particular game. How are we going to make this work on the forum? What if I want to take a turn being a Spymaster? EDIT 2/5/2018: I have updated this post with the rules we have settled on after a couple of games. So far everything seems to be working smoothly, and people seem to be enjoying it. So if you'd like to play, just reply to this thread and say so! Also, I have edited the next post to include quick links to the first post of each of the games played so far, and I will continue to keep the list updated as time goes on. Feel free to skim over any previous games if you wish to see how they played out, or jump straight to the first post of the current game. For posterities' sake, this spoiler box contains the rest of the text from the original post:
  8. Very nice! Though I’m afraid I beat you to it by about 7 weeks. *Cue Hoid with a speech about novelty and innovation*
  9. I do have some ideas of how to distribute the handful of cards I have left, but I have decided to wait a little bit so that most/all of the backers outside of the US can get their copies of the game first. This should be happening within the next few weeks to a month or so, I'm guessing, so keep an eye on this space for more information to follow. Right? It really is a gorgeous game. I couldn't imagine playing it without sleeves on the cards (partially because the cards are so thin )
  10. I will stop asking my Spren questions that they could easily answer if they wanted to, but don’t because it would spoil plot points in future books. And it may be cheating but I’ll do one for my own topic, too. He will carry the guilt of all things in his heart. Like seriously, he’ll feel guilty for everything. Even dumb things like the ability to keep warm in the middle of the rusting winter.
  11. I'll contribute a topic, too: 1) Prophecies about the Hero of Ages that the Terris would rather forget.
  12. How come nobody has commented on "the Assassin in White"? So good! I love how it starts with the Parshendi drums that gradually shift into Szeth's fight scene. And the music is perfect- I can visualize the whole scene in my head as I listen to it, with Szeth running on walls and lashing people this way and that, then the big fight with the King, culminating in a slow motion montage as they fall from the balcony. So good! Also, Wandersail, how they did the echoing flute. Nailed it! I'm super impressed. And Shallan's lullaby gave me chills! The whole album is phenomenal, but those are the songs that stood out to me the most after my first listen. (Now, how do we convince them to do "The Name of the Wind" soundtrack...?)
  13. Well after reading Oathbringer, I can see how the series might have been called "Oathshards," without needing to change or add a thing. This piqued my interest: Anyone know which of the Heralds Brandon was going to have as a viewpoint character?
  14. "Sit! Stay!" (works every time!) "Throw things when held" "Wiggle across the floor, climb inside the tea cup, then shake around." "Destroy Weevils!" EDIT: Political Stance Riverdance Stance Happen Stance Whatever this stance is called: Breaking Wind Stance (I'm sorry, my wife made me add it. She insisted that it was funny. )
  15. Very nice @Personification. Speaking of Holiday Cosmere songs, the “Mystery Project” thread took an interesting twist several weeks back, and somehow ended up spawning several holiday songs, such as “Frosty the Snow Dragon,” “Santa Rayse is Coming to Town,” and “Kaladin the Angsty Bridgeboy.” To get the full effect you really need to read the posts in order, starting with this post
  16. Thanks everyone who came out tonight! As always, it was fun to see and meet fellow sharders in real life. Between all of us who came we got in 3 games of House War. The first two both ended with Unrest, and the last one was so close, with the player in first place having 31 points, second place 30 points, and third place 27 points (IIRC). I had a blast, and hope you guys did too. And of course, this guy showed up for a little bit: Isaac Stewart was with him too, and they played a few games of Magic beforehand but weren’t able to stay long enough to play House War. Still it was super cool that he stopped by. Anyway, I promised that if I had any promos left over I would find a way to give them to people who wanted and deserved them. Well it turns out I do happen to have a handful left over. It’s approaching 1:00am here right now though, and I’m beat, so I’ll figure out details for that later. If you’re interested, watch this space and/or the Mistborn House War Page over at boardgamegeek.com. EDIT: also, if you’re in the Salt Lake area, Game Night Games has two copies of Mistborn House War in stock, and they now also have an included Hoid promo card. They also have a copy of the Mistborn Adventure Game with one of the Warrior Vin cards that Brandon was handing out at Gencon.
  17. Wayne, hands down. Wayne in AoL was funny and quirky. Wayne in SoS and BoM just became crass. Overly so.
  18. So I’m totally cool and hip and I know exactly what’s going on here, but for those unfortunate people that don’t know, would anyone care to explain what in the Cosmere is going on here?
  19. Little Wilson (@Ookla the Itinerant) told me that she is still planning on giving you a ride.
  20. I feel ya! If you're interested in playing via skype/discord, it's not to late to get in on this.
  21. Only two days until the release party! I have several people confirmed as coming, but again, if you’re planning on coming please let me know ASAP. Also, in case you missed it, it turns out that Brandon coincidentally (?) is doing a signing at the Barnes and Nobles in Sugarhouse just a few hours before the release party. That’s only a couple blocks away from Game Night Games. So if you have the free time, head to Brandon’s signing in the afternoon, then pop over to GNG and play some House War with us for an awesome Sanderson-filled Saturday.
  22. Fantastic! But don’t stop there, keep going and finish the song (including the solo by Queen Navani praying that Dalinar will return again) EDIT: Navani: My love, I have nowhere left to turn So this glyph I now will burn I pray we’ll meet again, if he will Deliver us!
  23. @Personification, “I will survive” is perfect! Fantastic job! There’s one small typo that repeats a few times though. I’m thinking the “with” just needs to be deleted:
  24. It sounds like you are missing one key rule: when you are solving a problem you can use any two resources (they don’t have to be the same type) in place of any other resource. So if I have 10 food and I’m solving a Problem that requires 3 food and 3 Skaa I could solve it using 9 food (3 food for 3 food, and 6 food for 3 Skaa). I suspect you’ll find the game much more balanced with that rule in mind. Also, keep in mind that the outcome of the game is heavily influenced by how your particular play group plays. In my experience the game only ends in Unrest maybe 1/4th of the time, but that’s because the people I play with tend to go for Favor and not Disgrace. I’ve heard of other groups where their games tend to end in Unrest more often than not, because of how their players play the game.
