I got Grace of Kings the Christmas before and it was sooo good.
-
Yes. It's weird, a lot of people on the Malazan Empire forum don't like OST, but easily it's my favorite ICE book (haven't read Deadhouse Landing yet).
-
In my experience, reading faster is the WORST way to handle a book when you're struggling with it. I'd say set the book aside, and come back when you're in the mood.

[OB] Rest of the series predictions?
Who Sharded? replied to ICanDream's topic in Stormlight Archive
What do you guys think about the embossed glyphs and colors of each hardback? So far we've gotten the glyphs and colors related to the corresponding flashback character. So Windrunners for TWoK, Lightweavers for WoR, and Bondsmiths for OB. If Brandon's plans for the future 7 books hold true, we have Eshonai (?), Szeth (Skybreakers), Lift (Edgedancers), Jasnah (Elsecallers), Renarin (Truthwatchers), Taln (Stonewards), Shalash (also Shash/Lightweavers)? So we're missing Dustbringers and Willshapers. I really want each of the 10 to be represented on the covers, but Ash might throw a wrench in all of it. Maybe she'll join the KR order of either Dustbringers or Willshapers. And Eshonai if she comes back will join the other. I finished the book not too long ago so I'm behind on what fans have already speculated. -
[OB] Tor Spoiler Free Oathbringer review
Who Sharded? replied to Blightsong's topic in Stormlight Archive
Man, I thought I was spoiler sensitive but you guys have me beat handily. -
Awesome! Nothing against the Tor review, but this one does way more to get me hyped as a fanboy.

Any Stories You Avoid Because of the Author?
Who Sharded? replied to Draginon's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I always separate art from artists as well. I'd read more OSC and Terry Goodkind if I liked their books more than I did. On the other hand, a conservative would HAVE to separate these things since authors, musicians, actors, etc. lean left and you get some very far left leanings ones. I actually think that other communities I go to are more strict about an author's views than this forum is. -

Worst Sanderson Character
Who Sharded? replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Agreed on Lift, only because the word "awesomeness" rubs me the wrong way. Her chapter and novella were great aside from that. But I can't think of any other Sanderson characters I dislike. -
Wow is this the first mini review we've gotten? It's the only one I've seen. The only other impressions I've seen were from a Goodreads reviewer I followed who was ~700 pages into the book. She said it was a slow burn but in a good way with the character development.

I tend to notice the first F-bomb in a book or series, but after that I don't notice.
-
I think Lightbringer 4 is similar to 3. Weeks lost control of the story and adds in a lot of fluff, but the world building revelations are amazing.
-
City of Stairs (and I assume the whole trilogy). I've read a handful of first-person present (Hunger Games, Red Rising, parts of Acts of Caine) and it took some getting used to in HG. I found when it was used sparingly, like in Acts of Caine, it really elevates those sections of the book and makes it more intense. I don't think present tense makes a lot of sense in City of Stairs, but I'm still enjoying the book for other reasons.
-
Yep, I just haven't gotten to Wall of Storms yet. I figure the third book doesn't have a release date yet, so I want to put off WoS a bit so the wait for book 3 isn't so long. I enjoy the Black Company so far (4 books in plus spin-off). I see what you mean about the storytelling comparisons. A lot of people can not get into TBC either.

One of the only books I can think of where the entire map is used in the first book. Really, the first book is like a whole series worth of events. Some people hate the "cliff notes" style of story telling, but I loved it.

I had a "girlfriend" I kissed when I was 5 or 6, and I started crushing hard on one girl when I was 7. I don't know why I liked this girl so much but it lasted for 2-3 years. Seems believable to me. "Cooties" was more of a social thing. I didn't actually think girls were gross, I just acted like I did around friends.

Authors Known For The Wrong Book
Who Sharded? replied to Ammanas's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Werthead did a post about this a while back http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2011/07/famous-for-wrong-book.html -
I don't recommend WoT to everyone, but it sounds like what you're looking for.
-
Sorry if this was already discussed, but does anyone else think that Dalinar will NOT be a prologue POV? Instead we will see his version of the night of assassination later on in Oathbringer. But since he's drunk it will be shorter and not as revealing as the other prologues.
-
For me there's almost not a single area where I'd rank Kingkiller over ASoIaF. Some passages in Kingkiller are better written than ASoIaF, but that's about the only praise I can give it.
-
I love Hoid when he's talking to our main characters Kaladin, Dalinar, and Shallan. Otherwise I would agree.
-
I'm crossing my fingers that Lift will grow out of thinking "awesomeness" is a cool thing to say by the time the second 5 book series comes around. Otherwise, I like pretty much all SA characters and can't think of any that are "overhyped."

What's your favourite fantasy series?
Who Sharded? replied to ICanDream's topic in Stormlight Archive
Malazan is my favorite, but if Oathbringer turns out to be as good as WoR, Stormlight could take its place. Another potential contender is The Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu. I only recently read the first book, but it was one of the best books I've read. -
The battles in The Warrior Prophet are so good. Probably my favorite battles that I've read.
-
I wonder if he means all chapters through 32. These usually aren't released in sequential order, and for WoR they left out at least one of the most eventful chapters early on . And we got the Lift interlude which takes places late in the book.
