Your All-Time Favorite Superhero/Supervillian
Quiver replied to Fatebreaker's topic in General Discussion
To be fair, superhero abilities are kind of... flexible. Whenever he isn't screwing around, Spider-man is crazy strong. Superman's abilities can shift from issue to issue, on what the plot needs him to be able to do. Of course, if the plot emans they have to do the impossible, suddenly Spider-man goes from lifting ten tonnes to supporting an entire building on his shoulders, or Superman can turn back time. It's why I tend to treat superpowers in a very abstract way, since otherwise things start getting a bit... messy. Being able to lift ten tonnes puts Spidey in a weight class which is somewhat above his usual choice of foes, but it never really plays into it. -

Well, I did it! I said I was going to use a Celestia-themed avatar when I hit the proper rank, as a counter-point to Nightmare Moon waaaaay back at Midnight Essence, so... Dawnsinger Celestia. (I was tempted to mess with expectations and use Mirror Celestia, but I'll save that magnificent Malificent mane for some other rank.) And since Celestia doesn't have any awesome quotes, Nightmare Moon-style, I'm settling for promoting the Solar Empire. Join today, and work towards a brighter future!

You know what happens if you deviate from the prompt? ...But no, seriously, what Kobold said. The whole prompt thing is meant to encourage writing in general, so you shouldn't feel totally constrained by it. Honestly, I'm really glad to hear you have a lot of ideas to flip through, so I certainly don't object to you writing something not related.

You know who was an awesome superhero? Hawkeye. And no, I don't mean modern Hawkeye, or movie Hawkeye. I mean this guy. I mean, his cotume is cool to begin with, but the main reason I love him is because one of the first modern stories I read was him joining the Thunderbolts. (Spilers for anyone who doesn't want spoiled on a twenty-year old comic, I guess?) For anyone who doesn't know, the Thunderbolts were a team of Supervillains who masqueraded as heroes following the deaths of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four (they got better). As their series went on, however, the characters started genuinely reforming, and wanting to become the good guys the public saw them as. It was, from what I've hard,a great story, and I really should pick it up one of these days. Anyway, eventually the Avengers came back, the Thunderbotls were unmasked as villains, etc. Status quo is restored. The thing that was awesome was that Hawkeye chose to join the Thunderbolts. This was a guy who had been an Avenger for decades at this point, and yet he quit that team- Earths premier superhero team- to join the "bad guys". The reason I loved that wa shis reasoning for it. The Thunderbolts were former supervillains, and so was he. Hawkeye was introduced as an Iron Man villain. So was Black Widow. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were villains in the X-Men book. But all of them proved that people can change, and all of them became important Avengers. I loved the idea that Hawkeye was giving this team the same opportunity that he got, and becoming their leader felt like a natural progression for the character. -

Yes please. In fact, you could drop those all now, and just go ahead and start Warbreaker whenever. #UnashamedWarbreakerFanboy. Anywho... welcome. It sounds like, between everything else, you've got a pretty interesting background, so... nice to meet you, and I hope you enjoy the books. Especially Warbreaker.

You have my attention. And a way to avoid her dying and resurrecting every other week. (Oh fine, technically she's only really "died" once, since before was a Pheonix consciousness-duplicate while she was in a coma or something, but still. When you use the name "Pheonix" and maybe-died twice, expect to be riffed on it.) And now I want to come up with a range of superhero themed Cosmere characters...

Drat. Okay, then... follow up question. Say I sign onto a contaminated computer with my 17th account. I then sign on to a different computer elsewhere; is it possible for a virus to be passed through an account? Should I change my passwords just in case, or is it fine?

Ben Reilly (Scarlet Spider, later Spider-man/Spider-Ben) Kaine The third, "perfect" Peter Parker clone, who eventually adopted the name Spidercide. Bonus Round! "Little Jack"- the diminuitive Jackal clone from.. some story I can't remember- was implied to be a Parker Clone. The Skeleton in the smoke stack was eventually revealed to be an earlier failure, re-purposed by the Jackal as a way to mess with Peter's mind. Name six "Sixth Rangers" from Power Rangers/Sentai shows. *Note: Name the character, not the color (but bonus points is you get the color as well).

Oh no! The zombie apocalypse has begun! The dead have risen from their graves, and spread across the land, as unstoppable as a flood. What they find they consume, and what they do not consume, they turn into more of them, to add to their shambling, monstrous hordes. Who can possibly stand against such a ravenous tide, in an age when the dead outnumber the living? Well, someone did leave this door to the multiverse open... So, if you don't know the meme, brief recap. "My Zombie Apocalypse team" is based on an image template with 8 slots: -Team Leader -Brawler -Weapon's Expert -Brains -Medic -Speed Fighter -Mascot -Guy Who Dies First. You can choose anyone to fill those slots, whether they be from movies, television, video games, animation... whatever you want. I'm curiosu to se what you guys come up with. (Here's a copy of the template, for anyone who wants to go the extra mile and fill in the images) My first team, for those who are wondering: -Team Leader: Methos -Brawler: Peter Petrelli -Weapon's Expert: Slade Wilson -Brains: The Doctor -Medic: King Ellesar -Speed Fighter: The Flash -Mascot: Lyra Heartstrings -Guy Who Dies First: Flash Sentry EDIT Following Kobolds example... rationalisations! Methos An immortal, so old he doesn't even remember the time of his birth? Methos is a survivor, so he's going to be in the Apocalypse one way or another; might as well get to use putting those survival skills for us. He doesn't act like a team leader- the one time he really takes the initiative as one, we got The Source- but he's got centuries of experience. He always does what's best for Methos, which in this case would involve keeping a team that can back him up going. Also, I'm betting there would be a lot of personality clashes, which is fun. Peter Petrelli Okay, Heroes got off the rails in it's third season. But, the flash forwards to the future did always prove one thing; Peter Pretelli is a bad chull. He has enough super powers that he could tear the army of the undead apart; with Barry being nearby, he also has access to the Flash's super speed (though I suspect he can't access the Speed Force, meaning he's be limited to "only" about the speed of sound). Point is, Petrelli has the potential to be a gamechanger. Slade Wilson Look at the armor. Look at the grendades, and the swords, and the guns. Odds are, Slade already has a zombie apocalypse plan; his mercenary skills and combat abilities are ridiculous (even more so if this is the comic book version), and like Petey and Methos, Slade would definitely be willing to make the hard choices. The Doctor Specifically, the Seventh Doctor, the Machiavellian chess master. He's smart enough for the role, but he's also important as a balancing act; this team is wildly different, with half of it being "whatever the cost" types, and the others being more noble. The Doctor is probably the only person who could keep those two sides together, and stop the team from imploding... and unlike other incarnations, Seven won't go boasting about his status in an attempt to overwhelm everyone and make himself the boss. King Ellesar The hands of the king are the hands of a healer. There are also the hands that hold a sword and can kill stuff good. Another fight for the zombie hordes, but Aragorn has a history as a ranger; he probably knows backways, how to set up ambushes, and the sort of makeshift herbs that would be useful in a situation like this, when "real" medicine is hard to come by. The Flash Speed Force. Look it up. Lyra Heartstrings Adorable as all hell, Lyra is also stupidly optimistic and a bard. She'd be useful for keeping everyone's hopes up during the dark times. Also, I had to include a pony. Flash Sentry Deserves it for the Equestria Girls movie.

The Twilight Continuum In Equestria there is a mirror, created by Starswirl the Bearded, which- when accompanied by the proper incantations and the planets are aligned- will allow one passage from this world to another. This Mirror was used by Celestia's former pupil, Sunset Shimmer, to flee Equestria and establish a powerbase in a different universe. Eventually, Sunset Shimmer returned to steal the newly-coronated Princess Twilight Sparkles crown. Though she was eventually defeated (as detailed in the "Equestria Girls" reports), the Mirror was not destroyed. With the creation of Twilight Sparkle's kingdom, she took possession of the Mirror, so as to study and catalogue it's effects. During the course of these investigations, Princess Twilight Sparkle discovered that the Mirror connects, not just to the "Equestria Girls" universe, to an infinite number of parallel worlds, some so alike as to be identical, while others were radically different. This realisation led to Twilight assembling as many counterparts of herself as possible, forming a vast, multiversal group, devoted for the betterment of Equestria- wherever in the multiverse that may be. The Continuum's meddling with the mirrors- linking them to enable travel between worlds at will- also revealed the existance of a structure beyond the Multiverse; an Omniverse, worlds where the very foundations of the universe were shaped differently. Both the Multi- and Omniverse are in the process of being catalogued. What follows is a list of the worlds within the Equestrian-Multiverse; other worlds (such as the various worlds and possibilities that exist within the Cosmere-Multiverse) will be recorded eventually. More to come, whenever I can think of them. Suggestions are more than welcome; most of these worlds come from fanfictions, so be sure to check them out!

Okay, so... people might have noticed that I tend to link images/etc in to my posts sometimes. Okay, quite a lot of the time, especially if the image is pony-related. But... I was talking to someone earlier, and they mentioned that just using google images might be enough to give a computer a virus. Is this accurate, and if so... well, how would I know if I got one, and does it only work if you click the image in question? (Going to go through it step by step, since I don't understand technical jargon) So... say I type "Cosmere" as a google search, then click images. It bring sup a page full of images of Brandon Sanderson, books, art, etc. Let's say I click an image. That causes a box to pop up beneath the image, showing it at full size on the left, while offering website information, more images, and the options to "visit page" and "view image" on the right. Is getting to this point enough to pick up a virus? Or do I have to click the "view image"/"visit web page" links in order to be at risk?

I thought I had this answer set, but when I tried answering it, I suddenly got confused about whether the characters I had in mind wore greatcoasts, overcoats, dusters, or just oddly long coats. So I had to look up the differences, which means I disqualified myself. C'est la vie.

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Quiver replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
So... I kind of... had a little bit of a breakdown. I've mentioned it before- in this thread and elsewhere, I think- that I have a bit of OCD. I was taking medication for it, but I've been off it for a while now, which is good. Except that lately stuff has been getting me, and the things I thought I was over sort of... came back. Which, as you can imagine, is bad. I've been dealing with it, in part because I've had sites like this as a place to relax. But... Well, yesterday, I had a bit of technical difficulties. I got stuff sorted in the end, but it sort-of ended up being the straw that broke the camels back, I feel a little better now- partly due to ranting about this to someone else- but I'm probably going to be MIA or at least inactive for a bit. Sorry to anyone I was speaking to yesterday; falling off the wagon (so to speak) did not exactly put me ina good place, mentally speaking, so sorry if I seemed (or seem) a bit off. -
Happy Pink Alicorn day, everyone! As we all know, this is that special day when Pink Alicorn get's some appreciation by shooting people; fortunately this causes them to fall in love, rather than causing massive puncture wounds and/or death. So, if you are celebrating with someone special today, be sure to thank Celestia that you aren't in the hospital. Pink Alicorn has a propensity for headshots. More seriously... happy Valentines day everyone. If you are celebrating it with a partner, then I hope it goes well and you enjoy it. If (like me), you aren't celebrating with anyone, then be sure to take a moment to tell the people in your life that you care; after all, there's no reason that romantic love is the only kind that should be celebrated on a day like this. And, to keep this vaugely pony-related, and because it's awesome... here is a song related to the occasion. Which pulls double duty by being all about what I just said, about Valentines Day being about more than just romantic love, and being more about Love as a concept. Happy Valentines Day everyone.

Thanks. I was going to refer to her as "Mrs Jordan", but the lawsuit refered to Hariet McDougal, and I wasn't sure if that was how she wanted to be refered to or... You know. Anwyay, thanks for clearing that up. *upvote*

I know it won't mean much, but I'm sorry that this has happened. All I can do is echo Kobolds sentiments of luck and strength. I'm not particularly religious, but next chance I get, I'll light a candle for you and your family. And...if you ever want to talk or anything, my PM box is always open.

Okay, dropping snark for a moment... I can understand Hariets position. The Wheel of Time is her deceased husbands legacy and, opinions on it aside, is an important part of the fantasy genre. She probably should have been consulted, if only as a courtesy. Of course, from what I understand, the legal documents didn't obligate any company to involve the Jordan estate. Martin's involvement with GoT, or Rowling with the Harry Potter films, are exceptions rather than rules. Frankly, thus strikes me as being more in line with Christopher Tolkien's involvement with and reaction to the LotR films: he wasn't involved, didn't like them, and made that fact clear. them. Loudly, and publicly. So... The Jordan estate may not, legally, have to be involved in the project, but I don't see any reason why they translates to not being able to decry products or comment on them. So...this lawsuit sounds ridiculous to me, and based on the flimsiest of pretexts. Heck, her being dumbfounded is a lot nicer than what we've been, picking up on all the flaws and mocking them from here to...uh...some distant WoT location. I lost my train of thought. Point is, this lawsuit is ridiculous, and I hope pursuing it results in the company folding and rights resorting that to the Jordan Estate. Harriet? Stay the course. (Actually, side question, is 'Hariet' how she prefers to be referee to? Like with Brandon, it seems odd to me, referring to people I've never felt on first name basis.)

"Vin of Scadrial, you have the willpower to overcome great fear. Welcome to the Green Lantern corp." Well, okay, that's a guy, but you have to admit, a Mistborn Green Lantern costume would certainly be unique.

Only thing I can maybe-suggest; if you were planning on going as an SA character, maybe you could circumvent textile skills by going as a Knight Radiant, or a Parshendi or something? The latter would probably be super complicated to do properly though; a mix of makeup and prostetics, maybe? A Knight Radiant might be easier, since there's probably documents online about how to make armor/swords, but... still might be tough. Er... so... good luck, I guess?

...Bleh, I can't leave it there. I write thousand word analysis on ponies, I can muster more than that! So... I'm not a huge fan of the Wheel of Time. I bought a copy of The Shadow Rising a while ago, but never actually got around to reading it yet, so I'm judging this less on information from the books, and more on what was on screen. And what was on screen was... eh. Not very good, just from a stand alone stand point. There was no focus character for the pilot. The prologue kind-of focuses on Ishamael, whereas the pilot is more focused on Lews... but it's not focused enough on him, so the piece just becomes a double-act. It kind of undermines how horrific the sequence is a bit. The pacing was all kinds of off too; there weren't any kind of "points" where you could cut to commercial, but they did it anyway. The opening and ending narration felt clunky and out of place; if you need to have a narrator pop up and tell you things in voice over, then you need to have a good reason for it... which this one didn't. Also... that guy called his kid Lews Junior? Really? Please tell me that was an adlibbed line, otherwise I'm going to start using that as a joke for all fantasy heroes. Like Aragorn Jr, and Richard Jr. ...Okay, and some positive? This. Not the Sean Connery part (which... sounds surreal enough that I might check it out). But Ishy's bubbly-ness. I agree; the prologue made him sound like a much darker character than he was portrayed. But... wierdly enough, that guy fits in pretty well with how I imagine Hoid. Yes, he was deliberately invoking Randland-Devil, but his demeanor, his attire and his affect seemed more much like a trickster than a champion of darkness. Give the guy a decent script, and I think he could pull off a character like Hoid. Similarly, I thought Lews suit actually looked a little like something I'd expect Breeze to wear.
