  1. I'll expand a little bit. Some magic systems are easy to use anywhere, and others aren't, for a few reasons. It mostly comes down to the fuel for your magic. As others have said, you would be able to use the Metallic Arts anywhere in the Cosmere that you have metal. We also know that you can use Hemalurgy to steal magics from anywhere. There would be nothing against using Surgebinding on other planets, but Stormlight as the fuel only comes from the Storms of Roshar and held in imperfect gems, and would leak by the time someone travelled all the way to another planet. To add to the difficulty, it's apparently very difficult to bring a spren from one world to another. It's possible, Brandon says, but difficult. We don't know the exact reason for it yet. WoR and Warbreaker spoilers: Breaths from Nalthis don't leak like Stormlight, so if you brought enough with you to another world, you'd still get the benefits of having them, as well as the ability to Awaken. In fact, we've seen that Hoid and Vasher both have a trove of Breaths while on Roshar, as they both mention (directly or indirectly) life sense. Now, as they're on Roshar, they can't obtain more Breaths except from other people who have them. According to Brandon, it's possible to fuel Awakening with Stormlight, but so far even Vasher (one of the first scholars of magic in the Cosmere) hasn't figured out how. He has figured out how to use it to feed his Divine Breath, but not Awakening. Szeth is also now in possession of Nightblood, and it is implied that he can use Stormlight to fuel him, though he might not know how yet. Elantris and Secret History spoilers: Now for Selish magics (and this is where it gets weird). Because of an historical visit by Odium, the Shards Devotion and Dominion were Splintered and somehow shoved into the Cognitive Realm, becoming the Dor. As the Cognitive Realm is location-dependant (unlike the Spiritual Realm, where the bulk of the other Shards resides), places with larger amounts of the Dor are where you can use it to fuel various magics. This is why in the novels, it was harder for the characters to use Elantrian magic the further they got from Elantris. I do think it's possible that you would be able to use the Elantrian magic at other places near the Dor, as we see other characters use their foreign powers in Elantris. There is more here to discern, but I am not the expert on the Dor, so I may have made mistakes. The jist of it is that if you wanted to use Elantrian magics off world, you would somehow have to bring the Dor with you in the Cognitive Realm. We see the Ire do this in Secret History, with the strange glowing liquid they seem to drink, and the pipeline running from their fortress into the distance. They must use the Dor to power their immortality. A brief mention should go to the Moon Sceptre which can apparently translate between Selish magic systems. We don't quite know what that means yet. That about covers it. There's also some stuff going on with general cosmere mechanics and hacks that one could use as a magic system in themselves, but we won't get into that.
  2. A flattened coin that's the result of a steelpush contest would be a sweet stretch goal.
  3. Was cool to see that Gaz was taken basically straight outta Dragonsteel. Pools were mentioned where the metal grows--definitely reminds me of Atium. I wonder how it's procured now if there's no Shattered Plains and battles against the Sho Del. Also, Sho Del reminds me of something from Elantris, but I may just be remembering familiar sounds, so correct me if I'm wrong. Frost! Nice to finally meet you. You can see Brandon's improvement in writing clear as day, and I think that's pretty cool. Other than that, the bridge run was almost exactly the same in Dragonsteel and Way of Kings (with a few minor differences).
  4. The ending seemed a bit far-fetched to me actually, but if you can get over that it's still satisfying and fulfilling. I'd definitely give it a read and see what you think. It isn't Sanderson's best by any stretch, but even a less-than-perfect Sanderson ending is better than many other authors.
  5. It would have been quite hilarious if Zahel had married Dalinar and Navani instead of the Stormfather.
  6. Dalinar may be operating under the assumption that Nohadon was a Bondsmith. Since he was like a king during the last Desolation, it makes sense for him to take that mantle.
  7. That's what I was getting at
  8. Seems like a lot of people have gone missing, like Flash, Delightful, and others.... Or maybe they've been here among us this whole time.
  9. Was it you who did the RAFO-graphy thing to tease out the likelyhood of being RAFO'd? Perhaps I confused you with someone. My apologies.
  10. Paging @Kurkistan, the RAFO expert. Brandon RAFOs questions he feels give too much away, questions that will be revealed in future books, and sometimes RAFOs just to keep us guessing. Keep your questions specific, and don't ask too much about future events. That may seem like a bit too much to not do, but really there's a lot more to ask about, like magic, characters, cosmere mechanics, historical events, etc.
  11. Wow, I haven't thought of this. Not only does it sound likely, but it sounds awesome. Hmm.
  12. I have a hardback of both, so they do exist. Perfect State, granted, came in a slipcase with Shadows for Silence. Snapshot is still recent, so it may be harder to find. I got mine as it came out as a numbered copy, so I'm not sure if they're still being sold outside of that. I would check Brandon's site store for them both.
  13. Kelsier is George Clooney to me, only. I blame Ocean's Eleven. It kinda works though, if you let Kelsier be 20 years old with grey/black hair instead of blond. There isn't really much to say he can't be that old, is there?
  14. It seems obvious to me that previously, none of the Oathgates on Urithiru's side were locked, and all other sides (excluding Stormseat) were. When the warcamps made it to Urithiru, they must have locked the gates so that no one can come without their permission and surprise them.
  15. I think this is a great post, but please remove any Oathbringer spoilers, as this isn't in the Oathbringer spoiler board. I've already read the chapters, but I know others haven't and would be quite upset if they do.
  16. And before his untimely death But also a very good point.
  17. We know the Heralds are up to things, but I don't think anyone can say for sure as to whether most of them will be a help anytime soon. Brandon did say in the blurb on Edgedancer: so we can safely assume that Nale will be featured in this book. Ishar is also up to something. Also, I believe Shalash is going to be one of the back five mains, though that doesn't sate you for this book I'm afraid.
  18. Erm, he did say Nalthian week, not Rosharan.
  19. I believe it was confirmed at the same time as Renarin "came out" with his Radiancy. I think his exact words were "Glys...he says Truthwatcher." or something like that. On spren genders, I actually think Brandon said there's a reason for Glys being a male and that it's not always opposite genders. We've only seen five examples if you exclude the Stormfather, so it's not like we have a lot of data to go on.
  20. I agree for the most part, but I feel like it's a bit preemptive to assume that that's where this is going. I have faith in Sanderson that he will keep things interesting despite this new dynamic. We haven't even seen the officiality of Elhokar's decision, nor Adolin's personal reaction. I still think anything could happen. Also, Brandon has spoken about Adolin in this book saying his character surprised him and he had to write more of him than he had originally intended for the plot (I believe he likened it to Spook's arc in HoA. Edit: not that it will feel like Spook's arc, just that it surprised him like Spook's arc). Because of that, I feel like we will be satisfied in the end with his arc, and that we shouldn't give up hope just because we see it going down ways that may not seem interesting yet. It's interesting that we as fans can be so good at guessing things like Dalinar's Highkingship, and Kaladin's parental goings-on, but no one was able to predict the second murder, the wedding so early, and so on. Brandon knows what he's doing, and he wouldn't be pulling all these threads what with the murders and Adolin's reactions to them. Things are still going to happen, and with the world going into turmoil, I don't think things like "Highprince" will mean very much for long.
  21. -Blurbs still point to Jasnah. -Syl dropping truth-bombs on Kaladin. -"It was difficult not to feel uplifted, even in the gloomy weather." Hooray for positive growth! -The Stormfather can form new spren. Probably important later. Syl wants to try it. -Voidbringers seem to be transforming into both Stormform and Warform, as well as looting food. Definitely points to gathering an army for a large-scale assault on Kholinar. -The ardent crushing on Kaladin & Syl's teasing. -Kaladin's still pessimistic about relationships. Trying to stop himself from liking Shallan. -Syl doesn't trust Kaladin. Kaladin thinks it's the Blade, but Syl liked Dalinar even when he had Oathbringer. -Lol. Kaladin thinking of Syl "cheering him on". Then: "Painful memory". Haha. -Adolin calming himself down with Gallant; missing Sureblood. Feels, man. -Mentions talking to his sword. -Yay for Renarin being himself! Keep talking to Adolin. -Giving away his Shardblade. I wonder to whom Adolin will gift it. -Adolin knows Renarin almost as well as Renarin knows him. -And we finally meet Glys! (Kind of). He must have gotten to the Third Oath to get a Blade. -Adolin giving Renarin the encouragement he needs. Almighty knows he needs it. -Whoop Whoop! Renarin using his powers to heal Adolin and show him a "perfected version" of himself. Must be both Surges active here-Lightweaving as well as Progression. Clearly means Renarin is a Truthwatcher for sure, though whether there's outside influence on top of that is still up for discussion. We're pretty sure Renarin knows Adolin killed Sadeas (and likely further injured his hand), so using his Truthwatching, he must have known what Adolin needed as well, even if he can't say why (healing, and seeing the perfected version of himself to aspire to later). -Wasn't expecting to see the Rift so early, but I guess Dalinar's been thinking about it. This is still before he met his wife, though I seem to remember that he married her for the Plate or Blade? I guess those must have gone to Adolin. -Sadeas being more responsible than Dalinar. Hmm. -Nice to see some Gavilar, and a mention of tiny Jasnah. -Uniting Alethkar seems to be going poorly. I wonder how that changed. -Dalinar being new to Plate. -The classic Sanderson "Notice-the-Trap-Seconds-Before-it-Springs" TM -Black Arrow guy confirmed to be Teleb. -Tanalan is a fascinating person. RIP. -The terrible price of Oathbringer. I'm glad we didn't have to watch it happen, though I feel like adding it in would have helped us see even clearer the monster Dalinar was. -Yep, Kadash is there. -Dalinar is ashamed and horrified at what he did now that the Thrill is gone. -Gavilar and Sadeas talking politics and all Dalinar wants to do is hit things. -Oathbringer being Sunmaker's Blade is fascinating. I know we already knew that, but I feel like it will come into play since the in-world book is named after it. -Stormfather doesn't want to talk about the Recreance. I wonder if we'll find out more this book. -May is mentioned again. She'll be important but I doubt she's Vivenna. -"A small group, prepared to change the world." Storms yes. -Come on, Lift, open that gate! And Dalinar! Put two and two together and realise a Radiant brought the boy to life. -I'm with Dalinar, politics suck. -The Parshendi are negotiating with Azimir. Interesting. I wonder what their stipulations are if Odium really is in control of them. -I'm worried that Azir will be mostly destroyed before they finally listen and come to Urithiru, and that will be the prompting that everyone else needs. -They call Dalinar "Highprince Kholin" while all the Highprinces in Alethkar just call him "Highprince Dalinar". I guess the former is his actual title, and the later is used for simplicity and to avoid confusion with the king (ironic). -I like the Thaylen Queen. Seems like Dalinar may get closer to bringing them to Urithiru soon, as she seems reasonable. -Voidbringers stole the ships. Fascinating. -The weapon Dalinar has chosen to keep secret is clearly Jezrien's Honorblade, which is still in Urithiru under his care. He has plans regarding it making a makeshift Windrunner to get to Theylenah quickly. -I was right about Elhokar. He's upset but he realises this is the correct turn of events. Swearing fealty to Dalinar as Highking is exactly what needs to happen here, and Elhokar has taken it like a champ. As Dalinar must give up his lands to his heir, that technically makes Adolin Highprince. -And it ends with Dalinar and Elhokar getting along well, even excitedly. I hope Elhokar is more reasonable than the other Monarchs, though I expect tension with that later. -Elhokar is on the path to becoming a Windrunner Squire with his worshipping of Kaladin. -Aaaaand Taravangian is coming to Urithiru. I literally spent two minutes groaning when I read this. This is going to hurt.
  22. As I suspected, someone's been adding dirt to my garden. The plot thickens...
  23. Except that we got the WoB about the Ones Above being from a world we know a few years before AU came out, so it has to be down to Sel, Roshar, Scadrial, Threnody, Nalthis. I don't think we can even say it's Silverlight, because that WoB indicates "world". Also, Silverlight is a Cognitive Realm city and we don't know if there's something on the physical side or not yet.
  24. It's probably nothing but Kaladin's young thinking versus reality, but if it is something weird, the Sleepless would be our best bet. They had to know Kaladin was a surgeon somehow, right?
  25. Eh, I guess I'll pay better attention in my reread.
