  1. Titud stuttered. The jerk had placed two votes on him! His logic was rather flimsy though. He had suspected Sloan (Wilson) for somehow scanning Orlok, which should have been impossible due to her rank. He had not anticipated her memory of previous events. He had meant to take his vote off, but, well, he had fallen asleep half way through doing it. He chastened himself. He couldn't afford these simple mistakes, especially since he was living on the streets. He could die any minute now, so Titud didn't think it was productive to lodge complaints against him. Even after moving out, he would have to stay in the Mews. That place would drive him crazy if he stayed in there very long. "My apologies. Can you please remove your complaints against me? I don't want this to end with either of us getting punished."
  2. Interesting... and that means it's likely that Stink is the only one going through Linguistics classes as well. I didn't play LG18, so I didn't know about that detail. I wish I had gone for it then. I shied away from the drive myself crazy abilities because Alchemy and Artificery require continual attendance at the university, while Naming was obviously going to be popular. I didn't consider Sympathy though. If I wasn't in Imre this cycle, I would be tempted to spend points in it. As it is, I'll probably be sticking in the same field. Still, this gives much more information about the missing field. Linguistics: Stink's field, he's been elevated twice in it. Arithmetics: I'm not sure about this one... it's not very useful if you have a lot of money, but at the same time, it's not very useful if you have no money either. I suppose it makes buying items easier, which could lead someone into it. Rhetorics: I expect at least one Skindancer to be in the field. Vote manipulation is extremely powerful in the hands of the Eliminators. Archives: The detecting powers of this role, combined with Banned Books means it's extremely likely to be invested in. Sympathy: Orlok's field, he's been elevated twice in it. Physicking: It's very important to have people in this category. In addition, the flexibility makes this role extremely powerful early on. I think someone would invest in it. Alchemy: It needs continued investment to be good, so I expected someone to invest early. Artificery: It's very similar to Alchemy, plus the double use makes for a very tempting field. Naming: It does literally everything. Everyone and their mothers put a point in that one. If I had to guess, I would say no one is investing in Arithmetics, with a slight possibility of Physicking being neglected. So... I propose the following. No one invest in Arithmetic. We want to make sure that the Skindancers can't fulfill their alternate win condition. In addition, the rewards for investing aren't any good. 3 out of the 4 options are static abilities, so the second level benefit doesn't stack. The only thing that's actually an ability is Pickpocket, which requires you to target people who are targeting you. That might not be anyone! The other three abilities are nice... but what is the point. Decreased tuition shouldn't be a problem except for the poorest of the poor, who will already have to take semesters off anyway. Reduced Interest has no practical application, because the rich can just save up for the pricey items. And Great Deals is pointless, since all that's been posted in the contracts section is volleyballs and velociraptors. Thus, I highly urge that we do not invest in Arithmetic, or at the very least, do not try for a Master in that field.
  3. Hmm... Orlok. Well, that gives more information. It's interesting that Wilson immediately jumped to Sympathy as being the most likely candidate for only having one person in it. @little wilson Why did you post that Sympathy was likely to not have anyone studying it? It seems to be a very useful role, especially mommet-making. I had assumed that it would be heavily invested in, so I didn't bother with it. What made you think that it would be empty?
  4. Titud began to pace around the room. His term was nearly gone. He had gone to Imre this month to potentially gain more funds through contracts. Unfortunately, most of them were impossible, terrible jokes, or both. He needed to analyze what data he had available, especially if he was going to die on the streets. The chart Straw had made would be useful. Titud wanted to maximize the village's potential for the upcoming terms. Even if he himself died, he wanted the campus to be efficient. Becoming a Master was a great power, that they could use to great effect. However, the campus had not evenly divided itself. First, he took note of Orlok's and STINK's status. They had been elevated twice. STINK had been publicly claiming Linguistics for a while, so Titud decided to examine that field. Suppose someone else, called Player X, was also trying to compete with STINK for Linguistics. For the first term, both Player X and Stink would be investing in Linguistics 10 points each. Stink was chosen the first night. That had a 50% chance of happening, so that was not unusual. Stink would of course lose 5 EP in this deal. Now suppose that both Player X and Stink continue to fight over Linguistics. Player X can invest 5 points, while Stink only has 4. Thus, Player X would have 15 points, while Stink would only have 9. That means that Stink would have a 37.5% chance of getting Linguistics again. And that's assuming that only one person went into the field. If two other people went in, then Stink would have a much more uphill battle. If Stink got voted for, then the probability continues to get smaller (was Stink voted for? I know he didn't get put on the Horns, but I can't find a vote count) Where this got particularly interesting was Locke Alveron (Orlok). Locke had been advanced twice, in whatever fields he had chosen. That was especially grievous, as he had been put on the Horns. If he had spread out his EP, then there would have been a good chance that he had lost some in one field. That would make his points even less, which would continue to lower the probabilities. Therefore, Sart suspected that Orlok had found a field that no one else had gone in. @OrlokTsubodai what field have you been studying in? There was also the matter of the missing elevation. It could be from the field that Sart had invested in, but it would be an odd possibility. @Elbereth Can living on the streets make the promotion action fail? Also, can you be elevated while in Imre? What about if you're not attending the university that term? If Sart was truly the only person in his field, then the math did not add up. He had invested 5 EP the first month, but had forgotten to send in actions the second. So, he had gotten lucky, and his EP was reduced down to 0. The last month, he had added 4 EP to the same field. However, he had not been promoted, so there were only two possibilities. Either his promotion failed, because he was out on the streets, or someone else had invested in his field. It hardly mattered. Sart needed a break. Perhaps then he could finally begin scanning for Skindancers. "If I don't die first..." he muttered under his breath.
  5. "I'm done!" cried Titud. He had finally emerged from his studies, beard ragged, eyes blood shot. Where had the time gone? He had just been at... Oh no. He had forgotten to pay his rent. He checked his pockets. He was broke. More so than usual. He would have to live out on the streets, but it had been worth it. He was finally an E'Lir. He stopped himself. What use was that if he was just going to keel over from starvation? He had to face facts. He had to leave the university. What was he thinking, staying on for an extra term? That was dumb. He was smarter than this. "Okay. So, first things first, I need to find lodging." He counted the money he had. Not even a talent to his name. There was always the Mews. If he worked, perhaps he could afford the fee. He would have to drop out... Yes, he would have to drop out. He breathed. No reason to keep prolonging the inevitable. "How to find more money?" He pondered this question. Perhaps a loan was in order... He had no idea how to pay for it, but that hardly mattered. Living meant more than loan sharks. Finding his resolve, he got up. He was still here for one more semester. He had to make it count. I haven't read through the thread. Sorry. The twelve hour gaps really don't work with my schedule. I work 9 to 5, so I can only view the thread for a couple of hours on weekdays. I'll try and be more active on the weekend.
  6. Titud grimaced. So his loophole wouldn't work. It was probably for the best. The Masters would have been swallowed by fake complaints that would later be retracted. All the important information would be drowned in a sea of noise. Still, he needed the reduction in his tuition. That much was obvious. So, he need to make some complaints. His first inclination was to vote for the Nobles. If they had so much money, surely they could afford a little fine from the university. He also remembered he had 2 complaints to work with. He would of course use both of them, if that got him any more deductions, but he doubted it. The Mage had also been on the Horns before this, so he was out. There was also Dele, who had just told him not to vote for her. That kind of move would definitely make enemies for him, which he didn't want. He had enough to worry about. That left Steph. She seemed nice enough, so he was hesitant on voting for her. The chart she had made of people's wealth was very useful. But then, something seemed odd about it. It was a small thing really, but it was enough to make him suspicious. She had called Glavion (Haelbarde) Hael. This wasn't exactly a big deal. Most people knew that he often shortened his username to Hael. But how did Steph know that? Titud considered her history. She had only shown up a couple days ago. Would she really have associated with an Edema Ruh that quickly? It seemed unlikely. By doing some digging in his thoughts (and looking at her post history), Titud knew that she occasionally visited with the other students before coming here. However, Glavion was not present any of those times. She shouldn't have known his abbreviated nickname. Then why was it on her list? His conclusion was simple. She was a skin-dancer. Some of her associates had known the abbreviation and used it while conspiring. She had unintentionally picked up on it, or had copied the list from someone else. Thus, when she posted it, it had the abbreviation in it. This was tenuous logic at best, but Titud needed to pursue. If he managed to reprimand a Skindancer, perhaps his tuition would go down. He smiled to himself, and set his plan in motion. @queensteph Why did you put Hael instead of Haelbarde?
  7. Titud answered the Yillish man's question with a quote from the student handbook. And ninja'd.
  8. Titud continued pondering his options. The classes he had been to were interesting, but of little real world value. The more advanced subjects took years of mastery to attain. He didn't have that kind of time. He paced, occasionally scratching his beard. If he was to reduce his tuition, perhaps he could stay longer. He looked over the list of common deductions. One in particular caught his eye. "File a complaint about someone." That was all it said. If you filed a complaint, you would receive 5 jots off of your tuition. To some of the richer students, that was mere pocket change, but to Titud that could mean the difference between a year or not. Still, there was no one to complain about. He was only a new student, and an Edema Ruh to boot. He hadn't exactly made any friends or enemies here. Perhaps, if he raised one, he could then quickly take it back down. It would cause some animosity obviously, but it might be worth it. He decided to raise the question to one of his Professors. If a complaint is retracted, do we still get the deduction off our tuition?
  9. Titud scratched his ragged beard. He needed to get it shaved, but that wasn't easy to do without a razor. He had tried it once. He hated the looks he had gotten from the others, coming into class with his neck cut in several places. Unfortunately, that meant he hadn't shaved in a month. That was probably the least of his concerns. He had no real money to speak of, so his admission to the university was already in question. And now they were saying that there were skin-dancers. As if he didn't have enough to worry about. No, there was only one thing to do. He had to leave the academy, and soon. Tuition would sink him, and he did not want to live on the streets. However, he couldn't afford to waste his time here. He had been able to pay for tuition for one term, so he would study here for one term. After that, he would get out of town. There was no point staying if it would just end in bloodshed. With that in mind, he walked forward. It was past time for him to become an E'lir.
  10. I've decided to group this based on the actions present in the game. D-Fence: Let me be clear on this one. The town's defense was never supposed to fail. The Lines of Warding were meant as a stop gap to prevent the Villagers from having freedom of actions. However, there needed to be a serious threat to make sure the camp defended. Originally this was an unblockable kill, in addition to the normal one the Forgotten have. When I did the remake, I made it into a conversion, as a huge threat to the village. I consider changing this back when I posted sign-ups, and again when I posted the change to Lines of Silencing. I kept it as a conversion as I felt it was unfair to change it that late into sign-ups. So, I now had a very visible threat, but it was a bit too dangerous. I didn't want to give the town a visible advantage, as that would lead to them not taking the threat seriously, so I gave them a secret advantage. I made 4 villagers Sentries. That, plus the 2 Non-Rithmatists present in the game, could give the town an extra 4 defense, making it much more likely the town would be safe. I also made the default action Warding, so the town wouldn't be screwed by inactive players. I even included a safety valve in the Acid-Specialist, in case something went wrong. However, I made the town's defense secret. That way, the town would always be paranoid about if they were safe enough, regardless of the number of Forgotten alive. Thus, it was a visible threat, but it had a secret remedy. This gets at why I had 4 Forgotten in this game. I wasn't planning on that. In the original game, with 15 people and 4 Forgotten, the Forgotten lost a member Day 1, and yet still came out on top. This is also with only an extra kill, not a conversion. I knew I didn't want 4 Forgotten again, especially when there were only 16 people signed-up. And then 2 more people signed-up at the last minute. Considering the number of Sentries, if the Forgotten had bad luck at the beginning, then there was no way they would be able to get a conversion. It wouldn't be a threat if just one person could easily block the action. I had hoped to have 20 people before I added in a fourth Forgotten, but I pulled the trigger at 18. In retrospect, that might have been a mistake, but I don't regret that decision. It's getting kind of late for me, so I'll post the rest of these later.

  12. Signing up since my Mid-Range wrapped up. I'll be Titud, a man looking to find his place in the world.
  13. Perhaps, it was a foregone conclusion. Surrounded by chalklings, alone in the cold of night, there was nothing the camp could do. They tried killing Cole, even after his repeated protests. The kid was crying, desperately looking to survive. The town moved to strike him down, but Gunther tried to stop the mob. That was the only opening the Forgotten needed. Cole's eyes turned bright white as he stabbed Gunther straight in the chest. The rest of the Forgotten smiled, as the chalklings poured into their makeshift defense. Gunther could only watch helplessly as the swarm slid over his hairy body. He was the first to die. Shem couldn't hold out very long. He had tried so hard to kill the Forgotten. How had Joel blocked his shot? He guessed he would never get the answer. Shanice pulled out a revolver. She was so glad that Lance had taught her how to use it. Too bad she had killed him with it. She fired at Lance three times. Damaging his Circle irreparably. The chalklings quickly rushed through the openings. Locke was the next to fall. He had worked so hard to protect the camp. When no one else watched, he was there to pick up the slack. It didn't matter now. Joel shot Line after Line of Vigor at him. He tried launching an assault, but the man protected himself with stunning precision. He was so focused on his attack, he didn't see the chalklings breach his defenses. He was swallowed in minutes. The chalklings paused, as Isaac took out a flask. "Come comrades. Let's not fight..." he took a long swig. "We don't have to be enemies any more. Let's be friends." The chalklings began crawling over Kyle's body, not eating him, but converting him. His eyes began glowing white, turning into those of a Forgotten. "No!" screamed Neil. He had frozen with chalklings, but he sprang into action, drawing Lines of Warding and Forbiddance like a man possessed. He ran to Kyle's side, desperately trying to stop the corruption. Neil looked at him, eyes glowing white. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a kitchen knife. He stabbed Neil, once, twice, three times. "Not you too. Not you too. I was supposed to protect everyone. This wasn't supposed to happen. This shouldn't have happened." Kyle continued stabbing him, not hearing anything. "No!" Neil yanked the knife from Kyle. He stabbed the man straight in the eye, and then raked the knife against Kyle's face, producing a deep gash. He crumpled to the floor, as the horde ate their next meal. Cole stared at Kyle. "Do you think he's still usable?" He asked monotonously. Isaac examined him. Kyle was still breathing. "Potentially. I don't want to see his artistry go away. We'll have to see if he makes it." He picked up the man's body. "Come comrades, let's drink! This was a job well done." The Forgotten smiled as they toasted their flasks, four sets of glowing white eyes amidst the darkness of the night. Vote Count: Aman (4): Seonid, Jondesu, Randuir, Orlok Jondesu (5): Aman, Joe, Frozen Mint, Elenion, Hemalurgic Headshot Seonid was killed. He was a Village Assassin. Jondesu was lynched. He was a Village turned Forgotten Artist. (He unfortunately died right after being converted) The Forgotten have won! Analysis and doc links coming soon. Player List:
  14. Rule Clarifications: Say Person A is protecting Person B with a Line of Forbiddance. Person C would have to Vigor Person A in order to stop the protection. This has the unfortunate side effect of letting normal Lines of Vigor beat powered up Lines of Forbiddance, which wasn't what I intended, but it's the way the rules are currently implemented. The camp's defense, and the chalkling strength, is determined before any kills. Thus if 2 Forgotten were alive at the start of a cycle, the strength of the chalklings would be 2, regardless of whether or not a Forgotten died that cycle. The same is true for Warding. If only 2 people warded, and they both died that cycle, the camp's defense would still be 2. This is also why the Forgotten didn't get a conversion last cycle. Brightness was alive at the start of the cycle, so she could use her Acid before she was killed.
  15. The village was in an uproar. Two main candidates were brought forward. Conner, the young man who hadn't been talking much, and Joel, who had been sleeping through half of the proceedings. Votes were cast, alliances were made and at last the town was nearing a decision. "Ahem." started Lance. "We find that..." Joel stirred from his slumber, and looked over at the horizon. "Chalkling attack!" he screamed, running away from the camp. The town looked behind them. A massive swarm of chalklings had breached the Circle and were heading straight at them. "It's Conner!" shouted Kyle. "No Forgotten would warn about their own attack. Get him!" The crowd quickly turned bloodthirsty. Conner tried to defend himself, but there was nothing he could do. With the weight of both the camp and the chalklings attacking him, he quickly succumbed. Cole landed the fatal blow, and yet no Chalklings poured out from Conner. He had been human. The camp didn't have time to worry about that now, The horde was upon them. Amelia quickly got to work. She didn't have time to waste. She was in charge of the acid for the camp, which was crucial in a situation like this. She ran to her tent. There, under the bed, was a full barrel of acid. That should be enough to stop it. She opened the cork, and a single drip came out. The barrel was empty. "How?" she asked, dumbfounded. She was the only one who knew about this secret stash. How could the saboteurs know about it? A person casually strolled into her tent. No, not a person, a Forgotten. Its eyes glowed white as it examined her. Amelia was no good in a fight. When she was on her own, she could make beautiful drawings, but she could hardly draw a straight line in a melee. She silently prayed to the Maker, hoping that someone would rescue her. She shakily tried to draw a Line of Warding. The assailant casually broke through it. The Forgotten smiled at her, as wild chalklings began flooding the tent. She desperately tried drawing a Line of Vigor, trying to shoot the horde, but it was no use. She was quickly overwhelmed as the chalklings began tearing at her dress, and gnawing at her skin. Amelia could only scream as the Forgotten continued smiling at her, its eyes glowing ever whiter in the darkness. Elsewhere in the camp, Lance wasn't having much luck either. Although he used to have Rithmatic powers, after the accident, he could no longer draw even the most basic Line. He was no better than a Non-Rithmatist. What he lacked in power, however, he made up for in knowledge. He had been instructing the town in advanced techniques, and it had been gaining him a leadership position. Unfortunately, that meant nothing in this panic. He desperately ran from the swarm, hoping beyond hope that one of his pupils would save him. Finally, he found someone he recognized. He tried hazarding a greeting, but before any words came out, a gunshot rang out. He looked down at his chest. He had been shot. Why had he been shot? He shouldn't have been shot. He tried saying something, anything. Wasn't this one of his pupils? Another shot rang out. His lifeless body crumbled to the floor, still not comprehending what had happened. The remaining villagers had retreated to a nearby hill. The wild chalklings were swarming on all sides. Shanice drew a large Line of Warding around the survivors, desperately trying to keep the chalklings out. Then suddenly, the assault stopped. The chalklings danced around the circle, waiting. "This is it then." stated Locke. "One final chance to kill the Forgotten." The camp looked around, desperation written on their faces. One way or another, this ended tonight. Vote Count: Seonid (2): Elenion, Randuir Ornstein (5): Amanuensis, Jondesu, Hemalurgic Headshot, Joe, Frozen Mint Joe (3): Seonid, Lopen, Brightness Ascendant Amanuensis (1): Ornstein The town's defense failed. Luckily, an Acid-Specialist was able to stop it. This is your final warning. Make your Lines of Warding, or the Forgotten will get a conversion. Ornstein was lynched. He was a Village Sentry. BrightnessRadiant was killed. She was an Acid-Specialist. TheMightyLopen was killed. He was a Non-Rithmatist. Player List: This cycle will end on Tuesday, at 10 PM Eastern Time.
  16. It might take me a little bit to get the write-up done, since people kept changing their actions at the last minute. Give me a couple minutes.
  17. Rule Clarification: Vigor > Forbiddance > Silencing > Warding > Acid Specialist > Non-Rithmatist > Lynch > Revocation > Elim Kill > Making In retrospect, I should have posted this one sooner.
  18. Also, the default colors have changed in the forum. It would be nice to have Red and Green back for SE, as that's what we use to lodge votes with. Not a huge concern, but a minor annoyance.
  19. The camp was starting to fall apart. Minor scuffles were breaking out over tiny details. Gunther was being berated for being too slow. Conner had been yelled at for failing to restock the toilet paper. Lance pointed out how Joel always seemed to be asleep when it was his turn to take watch. Ryth had gone missing, and no one could find him. Eventually, the tension reached a breaking point. Isaac pointed the finger at Dagger Tongue. “That man is suspicious!” he argued. Dagger Tongue tisked. “Do you have any other reasons than that?” “Well, no, but…” Isaac went quiet. Logic wasn’t exactly his specialty. “Wait a second.” Cole interrupted. “Where’s Gimmel at?” The town looked around. They had seen Gimmel at breakfast, complaining about everything under the sun, but he was nowhere to be found. “He couldn’t have gone far.” Conner reasoned. “Let’s split up and look for him.” Shanice discovered the body. Gimmel had been shot at point blank range. She screamed, and promptly passed out. When she woke up, she saw Shem standing over her. “What happened?” she asked, not wanting to believe what her eyes were seeing. “Gimmel was murdered.” Shem stated, forcing his voice to remain calm. “The camp was going to take it out on Dagger Tongue. I tried to stop it, but…” “Was he a Forgotten?” she asked gently. “No.” It came out as little more than a whisper. “What are we going to do?” she asked gently. “I don’t know. I really don’t know.” he stared off into space, hoping tomorrow would bring better luck. Echtelion was lynched. He was a Village Sentry. Paranoid King was killed. He was a Village Artist Vote Count: Ecthelion (5): Elenion, Jondesu, Randuir, Lopen, Brightness Ascendant Lopen (1): Amanuensis, Paranoid King (2): Hemalurgic Headshot, Ornstein Elenion (1): Echtelion Seonid (1): Frozen Mint Ornstein (2): Paranoid King, Joe Player List: The cycle will end on Tuesday, 10 PM Eastern Time. Hopefully this is the last time they get kicked back an hour.
  20. Thread is now closed. Sorry for running late. I was eating BBQ with an old friend I hadn't seen in a while.
  21. Sorry for missing this question. When I say "A character was eaten by the Chalklings", that means that they ran afoul of the inactivity filter, by not submitting actions for two cycles in a row. When I mention that "A character was killed" that means one of the other characters killed them, either through the Forgotten kill, or the powered-up Line of Revocation. Those two kills will not be distinguished from each other in the write-up. In Silver-blade's case, he sent in an action for Cycle 1 an hour after the thread was closed. I never got confirmation if he wanted to that action cycle 2 or not. I was planning on being merciful, as he made an attempt to be active, but then someone killed him, so I put in that he died from both the inactivity filter and from someone killing him. I hope that clears things up.
  22. There were few things worse than a gossip, Ryth decided. That woman, Stick, certainly fell under that category. Although she was extremely quiet during the attack, she wouldn't shut up afterwards. Unfortunately, she wouldn't talk about what mattered. They were trying to find the Forgotten, not chat about handsome Knight-Senators. It had certainly gotten the town riled up. She had to be hiding something, they reasoned. He didn't want to think about what happened next. Being ganged up like that. He shuddered. At least it had been a quick death. It wasn't like they could stand around and do nothing. Strike first, that was his motto. At least, that's what Professor Nalizar taught him. Come to think of it, hadn't Stick been in that class. It didn't matter now. You always had to be thinking of the next step. The next step, for him at least, was investigating the Circle. Who had enough firepower to blow it to smithereens? The whole set up was screwy. He started tracing the Line, making sure no gaps were present. That's when he found it. It was a hole about a foot across. If the chalklings wanted to, they could surge through it, but they were still. They were silent, as if waiting for something. Engrossed by the chalklings, Ryth didn't notice the person standing behind him. He certainly didn't see them grab a brick, and clock him over the head. He wasn't aware of his body being thrown into the Circle. He couldn't watch as the killer sealed the Line behind him. He couldn't even scream before the chalklings ate their next meal. His corpse was shredded in a matter of minutes. His killer smiled, and then vanished into the darkness. Vote Count: Stick (6): Elenion, Joe, Frozen Mint, Paranoid King, Ornstein, Randuir Hemalurgic Headshot (1): Stick Paranoid King (1): Jondesu Joe (2): Lopen, Brightness Radiant Stick was lynched. She was a Village Duelist. Ryth was killed, and eaten by the Chalklings. He was a Village Duelist. Player List: The cycle will end 48 hours from now on Sunday, 9 PM Eastern Time.
  23. Whoops. Let time get away from me. Cycle is now closed. Write-up coming soon.
