Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Araris Valerian replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I would like to point out that I got singled out a bit during the last LG for defending somebody from a vote over a disagreement with Kas. If the game mechanics don't take too much strategizing, then I tend to look for votes that seem overly aggressive during the first cycle. And Meta, I didn't really address your post at all, or at least didn't intend to.- 607 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Araris Valerian replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Well, I tend to prefer to have my votes have a bit of force behind them, for a couple reasons. If I put in a poke vote I have to monitor the thread for a response or worry about getting myself lynched. Happened in QF 8, I goofed a poke and got killed in response. Also, people are more likely to respond to a vote if it is a threat to them personally. That being said, I will only move my current vote if I get a good explanation from Peng, despite the low level of evidence behind it (which is kinda what cycle 1 is all about).- 607 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Araris Valerian replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Peng, this seems a bit soon to be forcing a lynch, although I'm not entirely sure when the cycle ends, I need to check up on that. But you seem partially guilty of what Meta voted on Jain for; agreeing with another player without too much apparent reasoning. Experienced players aren't necessarily more or less of a priority for the lynch since they are in the mix with the rest of us. Not that I disagree with what Meta said, but Jain hasn't had a chance to respond yet, so a second vote on him seems a bit inappropriate.- 607 replies

Heirs to the Final Empire: Roleplaying Thread
Araris Valerian replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Inactive RPs
Varun glanced at Luthadel from the vantage of the rooftop garden of Keep Penrod. He found it depressing, how every building in the city was stained with dark ash despite the hundreds of thousands of skaa that were brutalized to keep things clean. House Penrod was far better than the others, and Varun suspected he knew why. Arandar didn't seem the type of man to let others influence his moral standards. Beating men to death for sneezing was wrong, whatever the Lord Ruler said, so the skaa that lived under Lord Penrod were not killed for no reason. "My Lord Penrod!" Varun address Arandar from across the garden, "House Erikell has sent you an offer. They are interested in forming a deal with us with regards to agriculture." Arandar rubbed his chin. "Agriculture, you say. Hm... I'm not sure I know too much about the subject. What exactly are the details of their offer?" "Well, nothing is set in stone yet, but they want us to produce some raw goods for them to process, such that both of us make better rates than if we traded with minor Houses." "Very well. There is a patch of land near our lumber farm that might be suited for such an endeavor, although it is too rocky for farmland. Perhaps pigs?" "A good idea, mi'lord. However, might I suggest raising sheep instead? They seem to be a bit more versatile, since they can be milked and sheared, and eventually slaughtered for meat." "Yes, well, perhaps sheep would be better. But do people really drink sheep's milk? It seems like it might get lots of hairs and such floating around inside. And I doubt we could produce economically significant amounts of all of those things at once. Perhaps later we could invest in fabrics... Go see about setting up a pasture by the lumber farm. Regardless of what Lord Erikell decides to do, we won't be able to offer him anything if we don't get started soon. Sheep don't grow on trees, or we would already have plenty." Arandar seemed to think of something suddenly. "I have some paperwork related to my father that I need to deal with. I want to be able to hear lots of... whatever sound sheep make, the next time go to oversee our production facilities." With that he strode purposely past Varun and down the stairs into Keep Penrod. Varun headed off to go find out how to start a pasture. He would probably have to go all the way to Terris to find some of the blasted creatures, but he was the one that had decided to raise them, rather than some more local animals. He worked hard for House Penrod not under the threat of death, but because he knew that if Lord Penrod fell from his House that it would be unlikely he or any of his family would be treated half so well by their next master. And, well, the man was likeable. Arandar had a sort of air about him. He seemed awkward in large groups of people, but he would earnestly talk with individuals about history, philosophy, or how their day had been. You knew that once Arandar trusted you, he would hold to his trust tighter than a Kandra to its bones.- 868 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Araris Valerian replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Wol puffed out his chest. A challenger! "Well, see now, my great uncle's twice removed second cousin Trespassers Will, which is short for Trespassers William, was in that exact situation, and he decided to follow the advice of his sister's friend's mother, who said to always follow your heart. See, the essence of having long wind isn't forgetting periods so much as being so important that you have no challenger when it comes to proclaiming the conquests of your family and distant relatives. Now, I'm pretty sure subjunctive is a type of mood, but my friend the Ghost of Long John Cottontail was an expert on grammar and he knows that moods are things like boredom and happiness and such. He wrote a treatise on the subject which has received honors across the Plains, one of which, ironically, came from another of my relatives, Davadan the Enlightened. Davadan could tell you that your words are lacking a point, yet bear insufficient weight to club any listeners into silence. My ancestry, on the other hand, is so full of points that nobody else dares wield it save myself. Now, I wouldn't claim to be an expert on the Awakening business, but my third nephew's wife, Faolin the Breathy, is almost certainly a full fledged scholar of the subject. I read that one day, she read a small excerpt from The Wol Family Tree, and I'll have you know, there was nobody left Awake by the end. Of course, if I had been there then she would have fallen asleep sooner than I, but as my father in-law always says, presence is the key to success. And he learned everything he knew from my..." *snores*- 607 replies

Heirs to the Final Empire: Roleplaying Thread
Araris Valerian replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Inactive RPs
You know, we probably could implement some sort of lynch mechanic into this game, although I'm not sure that anyone wants to deal with that sort of thing just yet. Question for Wyrm: Can we set up an extended trade deal, such that we automatically send goods to another player each turn without needing an action? And me hoping for the above to be answered in the positive: Is there anyone that needs a particular type of raw resource in steady production? Arandar was extremely pleased with his new scribe, Master Varun. The man had shown remarkable aptitude in understanding the history of the Final Empire and the Ascension. Varun, on top of his duties as House Scribe, was also engaged in arguments for the rights of skaa. The Lord Ruler had decreed them to be his own property, but the hearts of men cannot be owned by anyone they oppose. Hadrian's skaa were significantly more capable of performing high-level tasks such as collecting information than the sorry fellows that worked on the other Houses' plantations. Perhaps the skaa would be willing to fight for House Penrod in a pinch; since surely they realized that few, if any, of the other Lords would permit them the freedoms that they currently held. Arandar found himself wandering the garden of Keep Penrod. It was a bit of a sorry thing, with brown shoots poking through the ash here and there in several rows along the rooftop. One advantage to having crops up high, that perhaps the rest of the empire failed to consider, is that you didn't have to worry about the ash too much. It didn't build up if you just swept every now and then, and the street skaa did the rest. He dug up one of the plants and pulled the potato out of the ground. While many plants had been full of colors and life before the Ascension, according the Hadrian at least, potatoes hadn't changed much. Hadrian had told Arandar of the time he delivered some potatoes personally to each Lord and Lady. The gesture had been mostly ignored, as he was met by a servant at most of the Keeps. However, he had started a budding alliance with House Urbain, apparently by doctoring some of the former lord's invitations! Arandar didn't feel if he had the same confidence that it would take to pull something like that off. He would have to leave his mark in a different way, although whether he survived to see his heir take control of the house was becoming a greater question with the recent unrest in the city. Arandar turned as he heard footsteps on the stairwell. To be continued later...- 868 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Araris Valerian replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
@Hero: I'm not delusional. Wol just doesn't quite have a handle on spelling. And he is a Reference. Wol knew that nobody really cared about his family history. But, well, whenever somebody was nearby, asking for advice, he could always think of some ancestor that had already dealt with the exact same (or at least marginally similar) problem. Take that darkeyed cook that had come over the other day for some advice about what meal to fix for his Brightlord's wedding, for example. Wol was completely puzzled as to why the man had put chull dung, of all things, in his soup the next week. Surely Wol's tale of Neolen, his great great grand uncle, was right up any cook's alley. The day old Neolen invented skyeel sausage should have been inspiring to any aspiring chef... Fortunately, my sense of taste is nonexistent; I never would have found out about the chull dung if I hadn't offered to share my soup with that talkative merchant. The things people eat these days...- 607 replies

Mid-Range Game 7: Eighty Splendid Suns
Araris Valerian replied to Kasimir's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Well, I can't break the game . My win condition is not tied to my faction. So I will say that I am confused and disgruntled that have been bribed twice when each time the bribe prevented my from becoming eternally aligned with my sibling. Furthermore, I have been one of the most inactive players in this game, due to confusion, so I am not quite sure why I am getting bribed. My first loyalty is to Seonid, not my current faction.- 665 replies

Heirs to the Final Empire: Roleplaying Thread
Araris Valerian replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Inactive RPs
News had just reached Arandar of the new creatures running about Luthadel. Kandra, it seemed they were called, and any allomancer could control one completely. It was a bit disturbing to think that any member of his household could be an imposter. Well, there were two good ways to deal with spies. The first was the simplest, but also the most bothersome. If House Penrod had nothing to hide, then spies would get bored and move somewhere else. But that would heavily limit his business operations. Arandar called for his wife. "Cienthe!" Of all his father's actions, marrying him to a scion of House Uethorn was the one Arandar had questioned the most. It seemed to have come about as a way to smooth a trade for some of House Penrod's lumber, yet Arandar was coming to know Cienthe for the deep person she was demonstrating herself to be. While he wouldn't say that they quite felt "love" for each other, at least not yet, they both agreed on what the goals of the House should be. "Yes, Arandar?" "Would you mind informing all of our servants that if they uncover one of these Kandra, I will give them two years salary up front?" "Certainly." Cienthe paused, as if considering something. "Perhaps," she said, "we could offer any servant that discovers one of these imposters the position that the spy occupied. That would keep repeated infiltrations from disrupting our house's internal workings too greatly." "Good idea. Servants are privy to far more of our lives than I am sometimes comfortable with. They might pick up on things that a Kandra might not think to impersonate. You know, I wonder if emotional allomancy affects these creatures in the same way that it does us. Aside from controlling them, I mean." Cienthe headed toward the servants quarters. "Well, it is something to think about. Although I'm not sure how happy our people, skaa or nobility, would be with having their emotions regularly pushed to extremes just to check if they were spies."- 868 replies

Heirs to the Final Empire: Roleplaying Thread
Araris Valerian replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Inactive RPs
Arandar saw how his father had been frustrated with the trading situation in the Final Empire. Things were a bit better since then, since the minor houses and merchants had driven their prices up so high that they became easy to undercut. But there wasn't any communication between the houses occurring over time. Well, maybe if everyone could see what everyone else wanted to buy, everyone could profit a bit more. Enter the Trading Hub! Arandar invites anyone that wants to trade to do so in the courtyard of the Imperial Archive.- 868 replies

I am in Moderation, and I don't think anything very cohesive happened. I was lurking a bit, since this game is confusing and I'm also trying to get a job IRL, but I didn't recognize a clear decision for who to lynch or to bribe in about 5 minutes of skimming the last 2 pages or so.- 665 replies

Arandar struggled with belief some times. He knew that most skeptics were doddling old fools like half of the nobility that had passed away in the last decade. But he felt a... kinship with them, at some times. The stories Hadrian told of green plants and a blue sky seemed so wrong, at odds with everything in the Final Empire. What could one believe in if the world itself could change so drastically in the blink of an eye. At least he had the histories. Hadrian had made sure that House Penrod had a solid grasp on how future nobility would see the actions of the past, and it was up to Arandar to continue to pursue his father's goals. Lord Farsolin had been wise; by paying for his biography to be written, he would be seen as a very prominent figure in the first generation of Luthadel nobility. House Penrod would never distort the truth, but if a Lord or Lady had only a page or two written of themselves, well, that was their own fault. The person Arandar missed the most, aside from his parents, was the scribe Royce. Keep Penrod seemed emptier and less lively without his father's helper. Perhaps, as his first action as House Lord, he would search among the skaa that his mother had painstakingly educated for a new head scribe. If the skaa knew that they could rise to such a high position simply by virtue of their intelligence, then perhaps they would be more innovative than those of the other Houses.- 868 replies

Heirs to the Final Empire: Roleplaying Thread

I'm gonna declare Arandar my heir, if he isn't already by default. Keep Penrod seemed a bit small sometimes. Now, there were not too many people living there at present, but Hadrian felt that some day he would need a larger keep to support all of his House. Being part of a noble House wasn't just about bloodlines, after all, otherwise after a thousand years his entire house might only have thirty or so members. It seemed that now was the time to make any such changes, rather than a hundred years later when every alleyway was selling for hundreds of boxings.- 868 replies

Mid-Range Game 7: Eighty Splendid Suns
Araris Valerian replied to Kasimir's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Hmm. I suspect that there are only five or even four in the discovery faction, because of what you outlined there. Basically, for them, this game is like a normal game with the additional option to play factions against each other. So I don't see why the 1/5 rule would be rounded up in this case. However, your plan is still a good one. I am fairly confused about what is going on right now. I thought of something, and I don't really have time right this moment to consider its implications, but couldn't we use the thread like in a normal SE game, and do lynch votes in red and green and such? Then if discovery tried to be sneaky and group on a single person every turn we could work wih what people claimed to have voted and try and find discovery that way.- 665 replies

Ok. Well, that was mostly what I was going for, although I was/am offering to keep track of the .5 wealths myself. And they wouldn't really be Wealth so much as a placeholder.- 868 replies

Heirs to the Final Empire: Roleplaying Thread
Araris Valerian replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Inactive RPs
Hadrian was a bit upset. He had been trying to negotiate some trade deals, but the current economy was too unwieldy. He could sell his lumber for a profit, but then it would cost the other House just as much as going to some random vendor from another city. But it he made his prices competitive, then he would earn no more than if he gave the products to a less threatening buyer. The nobility needed a new level of currency so that both sides of such business deals could profit. For that purpose, Hadrian decided that Books, from his Archive, would make a perfect unit of currency. They were worth something on their own, but far more as a representative of half of the units currently traded about by the houses. And of course, since he came up with the idea, he could turn a small profit off of it for House Penrod.- 868 replies

Heirs to the Final Empire: Roleplaying Thread

Lord Farrsolin, I will consider your request in the coming days. I myself know that the time for my son Arandar to wield the resources of my own house is fast approaching. I recognize the moral dilemmas you have faced, for when one acts in the name of the Lord Ruler, a sliver of divinity itself, can one be considered immoral? Yet perhaps the rest of Infinity has a different idea of what is right and wrong. I think I will open an offer to all of the Lords and Ladies to have their stories written out. I suspect any who take up my offer will have their Reputation increase noticeably among the other houses. Just send me a missive at some point outlining my own benefits in the arrangement. Luthadel Historian, Hadrian Anyone that wants to have their biography included send me an offer, I won't ask for much. Also, this is a question for Wyrm: can you do large deals like this for one action, where each player has an opportunity to respond and trade?- 868 replies

Hadrian relaxed in his armchair, having just penned advertisements to the rest of the nobility. Now hopefully somebody would be interested in his Dueling Canes. After all, to fight against allomancers, wooden weapons should be the ticket.- 868 replies

"Royce! This invitation we gave ourselves doesn't have the asterisk thingy. You know, the one that is by the word free, and goes something like this: free* *free meaning free of bodily harm and by no means free of charge. Gamic wants to earn something off of this party." "Yes, mi'lord! All of the other invitations have one, just not the one that we gave to ourselves. That isn't something we needed clarified." "Okay, phew. I was worried for a second that we had offered everyone free reign over Lord Urbain's fine alcohol."- 868 replies
