I'll admit, Shiv's eastern slang has been very entertaining. Although I'm glad he puts in the translations. And pretty hilarious how my offer of a drink and Cessie's asking for a drink worked out. It appeared Gamon was resigned to drink with these two interesting characters. Add in Eddy, still babbling incoherently nearby, and the night was shaping up for a good time. And why not? Chances were they would be missing a few more people come morning. "Wasing the wanting of fun while the wanting of fun was wasing!" Gamon knew he was speaking nonsense, and he wanted to chastise himself for acting so silly. But really. What did it matter?

"wasing the having of fun?" asked Gamon, who happened to be sitting next to the incoherent Shiv. He didn't really understand this eastern slang, but it sounded fun enough. He remembered when he used to spend time in the east, he would have girls always coming up to him and asking him questions that sounded like nonsense. Maybe they were trying to actually tell me something.... probably how good looking I was. So what is this creature trying to tell me? "Wasing the wanting of mischief and having of drink?" He held out a cup towards Shiv, hoping he actually offered him a drink and didn't insult him or anything.

Eh, crap. Just a quick thought: At night the Inquisitor gets to pick someone to kill, but then if he has any extra powers does he get to use those as well? Like seeking, smoking... or I dunno... Coinshot? Cause if so, we better hope there are two Lurchers out there somewhere

I've always wondered what the deal with the number 16 has been. I understand it's a pretty big number in the Cosmere. 16 Shards 16 allomantic metals I'm not sure of any other examples, but it does seem to be a significant number. Has there ever been any explanation for this by Sanderson yet on why he chose that number? (age he started writing Cosmere stuff, maybe? Because when reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, he created a fixation on the number 19, which he later revealed to us to be a pretty big number to him (in that Stephen King sort of way) For example, he was hit by a van June 19, 1999. And he started writing the Gunslinger when he was 19. And just stuff like that. I was just wondering if Sanderson had any cool reasoning or anything like that as of yet. Or has he basically 'RAFO'd it?

My b, didn't know that was a big problem in the thread, mostly just skimmed the 9 pages and just saw a few posts about Amaram. I definitely thought the Kaladin cliffhanger was one of the more important previews we've seen, and figured this was as good a thread as any to share my opinion on Amaram. Much more interesting to discuss with people than 'shipping', IMO
-
I think the whole Amaram/Dalinar friendship will initially push Kaladin away from Dalinar and more towards his crew. Instead of confiding in Dalinar, as planned, he will instead reveal everything (hopefully) to his inner-circle. And then I'm wishing that in lieu of Kaladin opening up a bit more... maybe we hear some back story from Teft, Moash, Skar, and Rock? (too much to hope for) While Amaram's actions were pretty fiendish, I think I can actually understand his character a little bit. He is just a Captain or whatever in Sadeas' army, right? And he was entrusted to keep the borders secure and everything all good while Sadeas was away playing at war with the big guys. So here's Amaram, some small time leader for an army technically belonging to some High Prince. Now, when he gets attacked on the field and Kaladin saves his life... seriously thing about how embarrassing that is for a Lighteyed Captain? He is in charge. He is supposed to keep everything good and stable back here in Alethkar while the Vengeance Pact continues without a hitch. How destabilizing would it be to that entire branch of the army to learn that their leader was saved by a lowly darkeyed spear wielder? All rumors and indications point that Amaram is actually a decent guy. What other Lighteye have we heard people say is actually an honorable man? There's only one person mentioned above the rest, and that's Dalinar. and we KNOW he is obviously a good man, a man of honor. Honor isn't about right or wrong. It's about being consistent and upholding what you believe in. I believe Amaram believes he did the only honorable thing in that situation. He was willing to grant Kaladin the Shards, but only when Kaladin refused them did he go through with it. And we have to understand his reasoning, I think. What would be a bigger blow to the morale and effectiveness of the army he was entrusted to than a darkeyed rejecting the whole foundation of their culture? I just think there is a lot more to Amaram than we know so far.And I will reserve any condemnation until more facts and characterization come out.

Noob's take on First Book: Mistborn The Final Empire
Gamma Fiend replied to Alayala_Radiant's topic in Mistborn
The Lord Ruler's Backhand of Doom did leave me a little stunned when I first read it. I just sat there, "....Did that really just friggin' happen!" (Note: I was a little disappointed on the anti-climax feeling of the death. Like, TLR just walks up, slaps him, and gets going. But in retrospect on how it happened, and the events leading up to it and afterward totally make the scene SO appropriate. -

Besides what everyone else already pointed out, about those minor discrepancies and small errors, I do think pretty much most of them got fixed in later reprints of the book. Just those stupid, insignificant details that get overlooked. And then there's things that Brandon changed from while writing it to the complete version. One example I can think of, and thinking about it I can totally be wrong, but And really, my advice, most of your problems I think we'll be nicely resolved by the end of Hero of Ages. Just one of the strongest endings of any trilogy I've ever read, and so many questions get answered and so much more becomes so clear. I'm actually on my first re-read of the series, and am almost done with HoA, and man! There's just so much small foreshadowing and hints at stuff to come in there, it's almost better the second time through. (Save for the mind-blown parts from the first read through) Edit: and as clancy mentioned, the Mists = deepness wasn't that big of a revelation, exactly. At least not for the readers. It is a huge step for Vin's character, as Clancy points out. It's a real turning point in how the characters view the mists. Us, as readers, have so much more knowledge and appropriate scope on the situation. Double, consecutive edit!: But, considering, these have been REALLY good questions and definitely show you have a nice scope/idea of what is all going on in the Mistborn world. These are nice, deep reader questions. UGH, and how about that Kurk?! He's just so rude... right?- 11 replies

"So that despicable bastard actually poisoned us?" Gamon asked incredulously. "I don't know about you, but I think that's taking it a little too far! I can understand wanting to catch these shady iron eyes, but... really?" Gamon was fuming. He was honestly too handsome to go out in this fashion. To die with all of these unfortunate looking group of people. That's it. He decided. I'm going to kill this spiky sonnuva call-girl. That was the only way he could figure out how to save his good looks. Have you ever seen a dead body? Absolutely disgusting!

Ya know. I was sitting here thinking, "Man, these people have a little bit too extreme of reactions sometimes to these characters" But then I realized, I kind of growled or made a guttural sound when Kaladin was running through camp and saw Amaram embracing Dalinar. (or at least did a disgruntled, "AHHHHH!") Maybe I'm a little more invested in these characters than I thought? And maybe, just maybe, you all are also having perfectly reasonable reactions as well.

I was just thinking about this, too. Is being a third or fourth son a constant, or is it a changing conditional? Next question to ask Brandon: Has Rock always been a thirdson?

Welcome to the Forums! And yes, this is a good place as any to air any grievances or hash any queries. what problems did you have with the books, exactly? Don't be afraid to voice any or all opinions, as long as they're respectful and in good nature it'll be okay. (You can totally explain your stance without any fear of harmful backlash, everyone on this board seems to be pretty level-headed and overall pretty friendly) Edit: oh yeah, except for that Kurk. He's the worst.- 11 replies

This would work, but we have to remember the potential for ANYBODY to become converted, and anything they knew now becomes common knowledge among all Spiked. So every ally we make in the beginning can eventually betray us. That's what makes the whole trust factor in this game so much scarier. Only the Mistborn (once we've definitively proven who it is) can be completely trusted for the entire game. But we have to prove who he is, first. (No offense, Peng. We'll just need to wait until you can actually prove it) Edit: grammar and spelling

Noob's take on First Book: Mistborn The Final Empire
Gamma Fiend replied to Alayala_Radiant's topic in Mistborn
Whew. Good thoughts and ideas about the whole world and implications of everything going on. You are on a very good start. As recommended, I would try and avoid the Mistborn section (and probably most of the forum) for possible spoilers. there are some HUGE twists in the next two books. But keep reading and enjoy! Allomancy and Feruchemy are probably some of my favorite magic systems ever. I like the 10 surges and stuff in WoK, but I just like the whole scientific foundation and limitations of the power of metals more. -

The Shard of Monotony

"Let's see what we have here, folks." Gamon said, addressing the crowd and gaining everybody's attention. "It has come to my attention that we here like it when things are laid out in list form. Seeing as our current list maker is busy, I threw this together out of boredom." He then drew out and presented a list tallying all the current votes. Besides, he thought as people rushed around him to take a look, it always feels good to be the center of attention. Casts for No Vote: Peng, Shamble, Gamon, Grayv, Aether, Aonar, Lucy, Wilson, Wes, Clancy, Eddy, Windrunner, Herwynbe, Shiv, Dyring, Barty, Kukri, Olliver, Cessie, Lam, Maxill, Ridge, Aspren, and Vron. (24 by my count) OOC:So that means we still have 5 people left to vote. Roban voiced suspicion of Windrunner (for RP reasons) but didn't put a vote in red, so no count there yet. So that leaves him, Weiry, Digits, Seran, and Mathieu. (I may have missed a vote or two, and if I did I'm sorry, just let me know and I'll update) I also have been keeping track of who has voted for who and retracted at later times.

How could that ugly sod be a full fledged Mistborn? Gamon asked himself. He was way better looking than that Peng fellow. But alas, looks didn't appear to be everything. I just worry about everybody openly discussing their plans like this. If there IS an Inquisitor among us (which there clearly is) then they'll be privy to the same plans, and will be able to sabotage or mess it up, somehow. As Barty Spiked so pointed out, all it takes is the Inquisitor having smoking capabilities to screw this entire thing up. If Peng is actually a Mistborn, then the Spiked cloud him, screw the Seeking readings up, and we end up killing our Mistborn our or Seeker in retaliation. Or Peng is the Inquisitor, Smokes himself, gains trust of everybody and everybody tells him their roles, and he just starts picking us off, having a field day. I for one don't think Peng is the Inquisitor (as of yet) but I do fear the Inquisitor interfering with this somehow. Edit: What do we do if somebody else comes forward as a Mistborn? (Doubt the same trick will work twice) Edit 2: Of course Gamon called you an ugly sod. To Gamon, everybody is an ugly sod. (It's tough to come up with look oriented insults, I've never been that vain in my life, haha)

And I just thought. If the Inquisitor happens to have Smoking powers, he can totally just expand his cloud to Peng tonight, making him unreadable for the Seekers. So when they come back tomorrow telling us that there were no clear results, we're going to have to kill either Peng or who denied his claim. Any ideas, anybody?

Well. Alright. Looks like we already got a declared Mistborn. Um.... Seekers away? I don't know about his claim yet. I can see why he's making that move, going into the open like that. Makes sense, just get it all out and start building people's trust from the very beginning. Will be nice if we can prove it. But then what worried me is when he asked for peoples roles in the post right after that. I'm just saying, that's some scary stuff. I'm still not voting for the moment, but I'm keeping my eye on you, Peng.

Welcome to the forums! Quick question: Have you read the Mitosis short story yet? There's some interesting info about weaknesses (or at least speculation of weaknesses) in there. It's nothing about Prof, exactly, but just some brief speculation that has led to some interesting theories.

gender appeal in sci-fi/fantasy books
Gamma Fiend replied to writelhd's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I've always thought of it along the lines that, yeah, right now there do seem to be more men dominating the field, so to speak, and that's largely of old school gender roles beliefs that definitely need to be shed. There are more and more prominent female writers coming to light every year it seems (I can't think of any, but they're out there I'm sure). I've just always figured, if there are more male writers then there will just be more Male Characters in the stories. I think it's more of a level of 'comfort zone' for authors. I just think it's a little harder to exactly capture the opposite genders' perfect state of mind, so some tend to stay away from writing opposite gender characters. I know I at least do, when trying to write. I can barely get my train of thoughts down on paper properly, couldn't imagine trying to guess my sister's or girlfriend's or whatever while I'm at it. Also, another thing to note, I think: Most fantasies obviously tend to be in the older, more Dark Ages type feel. And the best way to capture those types of cultures? Look back at history and look at how biased and discriminatory men have been towards women throughout the ages. It's a major theme in our history, makes sense that it will be one in stories with similar settings. And just about Game of Thrones, there does seem to be some cultural bias against women in the books, but to juxtapose that the female main characters are very powerful women. Almost as if to spite society. Or at least Arya does, and really, who cares about any of the other females in the series? -
I think I might actually sig this for the duration of the game. this is the single most hilarious, ominous statement I have ever read.

Those feruchemist ideas are a great start. I've been looking at the Wikis and other stuff online, looking into the game origins itself. While we are doing this all cool Sanderson style, this is still at heart, a Mafia/Werewolves game. We have to keep the basic, integral system and checks and balances to make sure everything still runs smoothly. So I think for now we should focus on just adding the 'Sanderson Twist' to already pre-existing roles (just calling it something related to a Sanderson world/theme while still having the same functions) I gotta say, Mistborn does seem by large the best system to use, as of right now. The other Sanderson world magics are either too loosely defined or specific so far. Mistborn general terms and effects fit in pretty nicely in the whole Mafia theme. Question, Meta: Did you see this Mistborn twist on other forums or places online, or did you come up with it on your own? Obviously, either way, thank you for bringing this to the forums, it's already been so much fun.
