Interview with Brandon's Publicist at Tor
Alliare replied to mycoltbug's topic in General Discussion
I'd add... What makes you think that a book is worth publiciting? Is it based on being a good book alone, or does it also have to do with current trends? -
You'd better try the ones I told you about. I've never been able to finish that one, either XD. I can think of a fantasy book whose main character is just a normal thief, at least until the first half of the novel has ended, but he's still the main character. And he's never, well, someone 'more special than anyone else'. It's Take a Thief, by Mercedes Lackey.

I don't know if I really understand what you are asking for... but if I do, I believe you should look at Ursula K. Le Guin's fantasy novels. She's a keen observer of human nature, and some of her books focus in that regardless of the universe they are set in, which can be sci-fi or fantasy. The book I believe would meet exactly the standards you're asking for would be Gifts, though she has more famous fantasy books (better ones, in fact), like the Earthsea series.

As a videogames lover (especially RPG/adventure ones, such as Zelda, Final Fantasy...), I loved this video. And I felt completely identified with the person it it XD. It's wonderful

@_@ I guess it makes some sense... if you read it carefully... twice. You're as crazy as the gentleman in your avatar! XD (just joking) Anyway, welcome here. Guess we're going to have some fun with you, and that's more than ok with me. Hope to find you 'round every corner ^^ And... I am Alliare and I have to say I am completely sane. Don't pay any attention to the straitjacket. It's... uh... the latest fashion.

Hiya! I also love maths, so it seems you just got in touch with the right people here. Though I don't do maths in my free time... if there is something such as that. I read in my free time. I'll do maths if someone gives me one of those problems you can spend a good time figuring out how to solve them. There is a book recommendations topic in this forum, somewhere (I could get you the link... but this way you'll have to roam the forums by yourself ), so you'll have no excuse for not reading as much as you should. My recommendations are pretty good... because I say it, of course. But take a look at everyone else's, or they'll kill me. By the way, I'm Alliare. Nice to meet you!

It's exactly the opposite for me. I am unable to do a simple "hello world" in any programming language unless you give me a book where it is explained for the mentally retarded. And I'm supposed to have studied it. Supposed to.

Sanderson Fan First or Jordan Fan First?
Alliare replied to SirZelig's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Brandon Sanderson fan first. For me, WoT always was that huge series of books that stood on a shelf in the bookshop. Too many... (even more than usual, some of them were cut in half in Spanish), and never felt the slightest desire to read them. But then, when I became over-obsessed with Brandon Sanderson, and started to read everything I could found that had been written by him, I realized I would have to read the entire WoT series first if I wanted to read the last three books. So I went hunting for the first book in the series in English... and I found the second, the third, the fourth... well, all but the first. It took me almost a month, actually. And I read... the first five pages. I don't know why, because I can't really say if I like it or not with that. It's like if I had an innate dislike for that series, or maybe that I feel that it will take too long to finally get to the ones Brandon is writing. And I know that's stupid, because I'll probably won't be able to put them down as soon as I have read the first 50 pages or so, but... Sometimes this makes no sense XD. -
Well, the last book had a problem with the ending, indeed. I started to read it and was pleasantly surprised to see that Rowling's style had improved and that the rhythm was not as fast-paced as in other books (nor she was filling a hundred pages with virtually nothing, as she did in book five). In comparison to her other books, that is. Then, as I reached the first two-thirds of the book, I look at how much was left, thought about all the loose end that were yet to be solved, and realized she wouldn't be able to keep it and, eventually, it would become somewhat of a blur of solution-after-solution and all-happy-and-well (will deaths, of course. There had to be deaths). It happened. I mean, you can't just forge a character (probably the only character who went through all the books without stereotyping himself) to make everyone wonder about his motives and allegiances (Snape, that is), and then solve it through a "memory" that is told in a couple of pages. I mean, it is not that the memory is bad it itself, it's just that... that's the only explanation that is given, and not the final one. It's cheap. Another thing... Is that, honestly, even if you want to make a fuss about love and peace, making the main character win the final battle because of love... especially that way... seems forced. But I still think Rowling made a major plot mistake in not making Voldemort drink some Felix Felicis elixir before confronting Harry That potion is the most deus-ex-machina thing there is in the entire series. Especially because only the good ones ever think of using it.

Now, this is funny. Gotta love this topic Now, let's see if I might have something out of the ordinary that won't be too embarrasing to tell... Huh... Acute-hearing. No matter what you say, if you are in the same place as I, or even if you're having a telephone conversation next to me (even if you're the one on the other side of the line), I'll probably hear it. Maybe not all, but enough to have a general idea. It's useful to spy on someone, but can be quite boring, too. You know, you cannot really say "I already know all about your plan for my birthday, mom, you told dad yesterday night when you were downstairs", so sometimes you get to hear the same conversation over and over again. Language mixer. I have the ability to think in any language I can speak. If I'm thinking about a book I've read in English, I'll be thinking in English, and continue so until I engage in a conversation/read something/hear something in any other language, and so on. The problem is, unless it is a language I'm not fluent at, I'm not really conscious of which I'm using. That means that, if I get distracted, I can do things such as write a supposedly French essay in perfect -well, not perfect. It can be drastically improved- Japanese. Well, don't look at me that way. It was an exam and I was pretty bored, and I had a brand new manga in my bag, so it's obvious what happened XD.

That I didn't remember, though I know I read the full annotations at the moment. I am horrible for keeping all the facts of my head. No, I don't think he's lying. I'll check the annotations, though, to find out what he says, exactly. However, I want to explain myself, at least for not to be regarded as someone who says things that make no sense XD. Ok, ok, my bad. I didn't make myself clear. The Final Empire's water has more metals than normal water, remember? That's how Vin was able to use her "luck", and that wasn't even her enhanced power. And it is mentioned she tried to "reserve" it. So, metals could have made small accumulations, somehow, in non-allomantic people (small enough not to be toxig, so it would be nothing in comparison to what an allomantic vial could have). Not much, and definitely not enough for escaping, but that's what could have benefited from the Lerasium bonus.

Reading you seems somewhat fun. It seems you have much more freedom to change your studies if you decide there's something you're more interested in, and also that you're not restricted to the particular subject you're studying when choosing which classes you want to attend to. Things are much more restricted here XD. People don't usually change career past their first year at University and, in fact, the University bureaucracy itself would be quite unprepared for it. I have been struggling with it today (had to enter in a few courses before time was over), and I ended up printing the papers just for scanning them again and then sending them via e-mail. Madness @_@ About that... I'm in the School of Medicine, studying to become a doctor. Here, you study for six years before getting your title, and then spend another five in which you're already a professional, but are specializing. I'm still in my first six years, but enjoying it a lot And I might be some sort of black sheep, because I took a year off to study History, which focused mainly in Prehistoric times.

Long-time reader, first-time forum-er
Alliare replied to The Braddy Nine's topic in Introduce Yourself!
Well, technically I have been in these forums more time than you, if only for hours, so I might as well welcome you About the Cosmere... well, the first time I heard about "a character named Hoid that appeared in both Elantris and The Final Empire", I was like: "people have a really good memory" and "so what?". But then I kept both reading Brandon's books and visiting Brandon's website and fan sites, and realized you can never take anything for granted in his writings, so... ... well, so don't feel bad, because you'll make me feel a dummy too, and I definitely don't want that! And I also try to get my friends to read Brandon's books. I love talking about books I like, but cannot do that if I'm the only one who has read them. ... of course, that's not always a good idea if you get mocked as Elend's clone. Not that I have anything against Elend, mind you. Well, I suppose I do read a lot when spending time with my friends. -
Oh, you're that guy from the rules post. Thanks for the welcome! Ok, I think I am starting to like this place... a lot ^^

Well, he was tired. Hurt (the famous scars). Even if he had atium, he was at a disadvantage. There's no point in seeing the future if you're surrounded and have no strength left. I think he had to sneak out, at the very best. If there had been an open confrontation, and he had won, he wouldn't have been the only to escape. So, yes, probably he used some atium to see what the guards were going to do. Would have been foolish not to. But I don't think a prisoner, in a prisoner's conditions, would be able to escape from the Pits burning only atium. It would have been very difficult. Being a Lerasium-enhanced Mistborn would have helped. And... coincidentally? I don't know. Kandra live there, and kandra are from Preservation. Nothing is coincidential. And... well, yes, Vin never actually mentions how strong Kelsier is for a Mistborn, but... Vin worships Kelsier. Not as a deity, but as a teacher. And we do see Kelsier fighting against people from the Houses specialized in fighting Mistborns... and, well, I don't think the Houses have them just for decoration, and he really does it, whilst Vin struggles against Zane in book two. There's only one thing I know for sure: Brandon is a master of putting the answer to very difficult plot twists and mysteries right in front of our eyes without us noticing. And they make too many references to Kelsier's escape. Come on, he's even called the Survivor!

Same here about The Black Magician/The Traitor Spy (both by Trudi Canavan). The first is good, and easy to read (and quick, something good when I have to study a lot and need something to distract me but can't afford to lose too much time). But, when I got halfway through the first book of the Traitor Spy trilogy, I was just like: "Wait... this makes no sense! You're just throwing half of your universe's rules out of the window!" And why do your characters don't think, either?" Of course I am exaggerating, but you get the picture Think I went a little off-topic... sorry ^^U

Thanks for the warning! I'll hire a pewter misting to protect my virtue ^^ ... That is... A female pewter misting

There is something that has always bothered me. It may be interesting if we are discussing about the number of beads. It's Kelsier's snapping, or, better, his non-snapping. I mean, he was already a skilled thief before going to the Pits. Surely he had already been in lots of life-threatening situations. His own wife was a misting. But, he didn't have any allomantic powers before going to the Pits? How so? And then, nobody knows exactly how, he escapes from the Pits. It makes sense, he discovers he's a Mistborn. Oh, so? So they sell metal vials to the prisoners of Hathsin? I think there might be a Lerasium bead there. Now, you guys know a lot of things Brandon has said in a lot of places, so you might be able to confirm it or not...

You bet I will I love spawning crazy theories ^^

Wow, everyone who welcomes me is a staff member! I feel important *gets on the top of a very big cloud... and falls, because clouds aren't supposed to support anyone* Thanks for the compliment! (though I don't know if I should deduce from it that Spaniards use to talk gibberish... ) So there's someone else from Spain... I see... I'll conduct my own investigation... just need a big, big magnifier...

You guys have recommended most of what I wanted to recommend. You already mentioned the Time Master trilogy by Louise Cooper... trat one keeps a fight against Mistborn for #1 trilogy in my list of preferences (and it's losing it). Same with The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, and the second part, The Wise Man's Fear (I know the trilogy is called The Kingkiller Chronicles, but it just doesn't seem to fit... yet). So, let's say something new: The Tamír trilogy, by Lynn Flewelling, composed of The Bone Doll's Twin, Hidden Warrior and The Oracle's Queen, also fantasy, is wonderful. The author is better known for her Nightrunner books, starring Alec and Seregil, whick are very good, but personally I think the Tamír trilogy is better. The author Mercedes Lackey has many books that take place in her world of Valdemar, a place where laws, well-being and order are enforced by Heralds, people chosen by Companions, a sort of divine beings in white horse form and who have mind powers. Of those books, I especially like The last Herald-Mage trilogy, and, if you read it, falling in love with the main character, Vanyel, is a must And, to finish, I'll just say that The Obsidian trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory is something you definitely want to read if you have the time to spare. ------------------------------------------- I think I have to disagree there... It started well. It ended up being an essay in Canavan's personal opinions, somehow. And it became pretty obvious that she wouldn't put what she thought aside for the good of the plot. So when I finished reading, I was rather disappointed. (And with my head full of reasons of why things didn't have to be that way, just logically speaking, or in a court-of-law speaking sort of way XD) However, I have to agree the idea was very good.

Now, that would be nice. Besides, that would mean they would broadcast the series again. Most children theas days don't know Sailor Moon, and I'd love to discuss it with the younglings in my family (I'm a big fan ). And they not editing some scenes would be a huge bonus ^^ By the way, have you watched the live-action Sailor Moon series? It can be found in Japanese but fansubbed in English, and they really did it with the story, closer to the manga and well-rounded characters.
