What makes the Honorblades more powerful? (spoilers)
Gloom replied to Two McMillion's topic in Stormlight Archive
Then by this definition, you're saying that claiming an Honorblade makes you a mortal Herald. I don't believe this even a little bit. I believe that the Honorblades would have forced the Heralds to comply with the Oathpact. This is why they had to be abandoned. If you aren't a Herald, then the Honorblades won't force you to comply with the Oathpact. Nothing said the Heralds had to die to be returned to the place that Taln was sent, only that you would be sent there if you did die. No where in this statement does it imply that you had to die to be sent back. By your theory, simply holding an Honorblade should be enough to send you to the place of pain and fire.- 41 replies

I will agree with that theory.

Szeth had no idea who his benefactor was. He found that out at the end of TWoKs. Szeth doesn't ask his benefactors for things. I believe Brandon would have shown his handler giving Szeth a gemheart if this was the case. Szeth doesn't seem to carry vary many gemstones on his person, and generally uses available stormlight to accomplish his goals. I believe that Szeth would consider carrying any gemstones profane, he may carry a few spheres with him, but I honestly can't see him carrying more than he considers absolutely necessary. If Szeth uses Stormlight to travel, then he should be on the Shattered Plains weeks ahead of Shallan and Jasnah. @FistsofRage — Brandon compares his magic systems to physics all the time. He bases a lot of his limitations on those imposed by physics. He bends those rules as necessary, but conforms to them more often than not.

So I'm curious about this one. If Shallan and Kaladin find Urithiru by locating an Oathgate in the Shattered Plains and travel to a location in Western Roshar, was it discovered in western Roshar? Or was it discovered in eastern Roshar?
-
The fastest he should be able to travel comfortably is about a hundred miles per hour. Faster than that without a windscreen, and he'd be pretty miserable. So lets just say the terminal velocity of a human, which is 117-125mph in random posture. If the human uses the bullet shaped position, (sometimes used by experienced sky divers or seen in movies), their terminal velocity can reach speeds up to 210mph. A Knight Radiant in Shardplate may be able to exceed these speeds due to the protection the armor provides, but without that protection, you're pretty much topping out at about as fast as your average commercial Helicopter. So if Szeth could maintain flight for an hour, he may be able to get around a hundred miles after which he would need a Highstorm to recharge his gems.

What makes the Honorblades more powerful? (spoilers)
Gloom replied to Two McMillion's topic in Stormlight Archive
@Fistsofrage — I would speculate that it all comes down to how you look at it. If I pick up an Honorblade, does that mean that I have made a pact with Honor? If not, then carrying an Honorblade is no guarantee that you would be sent to join Taln who did make a pact with Honor. If I pick up a Radiant Blade, does that make me a Radiant? If so, then the Knights Radiant never fell. If I pick up a piece of a crown, would that make me a king? I don't find it unreasonable that you could wield an Honorblade without being bound to the same conditions as a Herald is. If this were the case, then by wielding an Honorblade, you would become a Herald. @Argent — Ooh, I love surprises, which part would be a surprise? That the Honorblades may be in the possession of someone in Shinovar? That that someone has a great deal of influence over the Stone Shaman? That they provided Szeth with Jezriens Honorblade when he was made truthless? That they loosed him on an unsuspecting land and that he conveniently was in the right place at the right time to be handed off to the Parshendi to assassinate Galivar? I find just about everything about Szeth to be surprising.- 41 replies

Szeth can't fly. For one, he'd need an extraordinary number of gems since he can't hold stormlight for more than a few minutes. That's assuming that he even has the capacity to fly. I believe that if Szeth could fly, it might be something worth mentioning in TWoKs. Szeth had plenty of time to travel from location to location conventionally. A determined man on a horse can cover a lot of ground over the course of months of travel. Stormlight can help him recover from fatigue and horses can be exchanged regularly.

I agree with you on that Argent. I would assume that if you have a gemstone of the correct type and cut you may be able to trap a flamespren if you place it in a fire, but if I seriously doubt the spren will be attracted to the gem based on its type and cut alone. I also doubt you could capture a bonding spren without a great deal of effort, far beyond what you would need to capture an ordinary spren.

I mean that we have two separate people who both have access to the same power, one of which was taught, and one of which has a teacher, and neither one can fly using basic lashings. So either Szeth is completely incompetent, despite having over a year knowing what it was he was doing along with knowledge what of the power set a Wind Runner was, and failed to figure out how to use his lashings as method of flight, or he lacks the ability as things currently stand.

Are flys sentient because they are attracted to dung? Are spren sentient because they are attracted to specific stimuli?

A cant (or cryptolect) is the jargon or argot of a group, often implying its use to exclude or mislead people outside the group. So perhaps Deathcants? I'll agree that a cant is slightly different in general, but the phrases are cryptic and confusing to those who hear them.

See, I'm totally disappointed. Here I was picturing Kurkistans trophy room filled with stasis capsule display cases with various body parts collected over the centuries from those who lost bets which included said body part. This would have been so much more interesting. ....then again, do we really know this isn't the case?
-
No worries, Wind Runners can fly. That isn't a function of the three lashings, so were certain to see Kaladin learn a few more tricks, then learn how to use those tricks in sequence to make mind blowing action scenes.

What makes the Honorblades more powerful? (spoilers)
Gloom replied to Two McMillion's topic in Stormlight Archive
This is true, and false at the same time. It's true that at some point in history, all of the Honorblades are likely to have been found together, but it doesn't mean they stayed together. They could have had dozens of wielders over the centuries...of course, if stone shamans went out and recovered these blades whenever their wielders fell, then yes, they would still be together. No spren for Szeth. This was a pretty clear answer. You can justify that it's in his stone, but generally from what I've seen, when Brandon says no, that's the answer. He didn't try to get Aes Sedai on the answer, he just said Szeth has no spren. Spren can be locked in gemstones. This is a function of symmetry and physical make-up. Szeth oathstone, from what we can see, isn't even made up of a single substance. And if Dalinar were to pick up Talns Honorblade and have his eyes turn brown while he was holding it, what would that tell you?- 41 replies

The difference between creating a spren from scratch and corrupting a spren to a different purpose is the difference between creating life from nothing, and altering an existing life form. I'll let you take it up with the scientific community as to whether the difference between the two is a matter of opinion.
-
Just out of curiosity, did you have plans for that arm?
-
No, I saw an actual quote. It was in a transcription from a reading I believe. It said something like is it possible for a shardweapon to be something other than a sword? Brandon answered that it was definitely possible.
-
It is strongly implied that Szeth took a boat to Kharbranth. If Szeth knew who his benefactor was, then why was he surprised at the end? I think it's pretty strongly implied that Szeth traveled conventionally. If you have a list of people, and that list is static as his was, then you just plan your travels according to how close your targets are to one another. It doesn't seem likely that Szeth had to travel over the greater part of Roshar. It seems like most of his work was centered around Jah Keved.

We should keep in mind that Wyndle was not part of her agreement with the Nightwatcher. Until she trapped her voidbringer she didn't have her awesomeness. So What she asked for doesn't necessarily correspond with her ability to Surgebind.

The symbol of house Kholin is the tower and the crown if that makes any difference to you.

A corrupted spren is not the same as an Odium based spren. It is another shards spren that has been corrupted by Odium.
-
I'm assuming that they felt that things had already gone too far. We don't know that they were aware of the circumstances surrounding Szeth. From what I understand, they used a third party to contract the assassination. It's not only possible, but likely that they never had contact with the actual assassin. The quote was retrieved for Shardlet. It wasn't part of my argument. So, I'm not saying anything in regards to the quote.

Reviving a dead topic: Szeth's Shardblade is an Honourblade
Gloom replied to Aether's topic in Stormlight Archive
The way I see it, when Kaladin is heavily invested, chock full of Stormlight, his eyes become a lighter shade because they are being back-lit by Stormlight. The less Stormlight Kaladin is holding, the lower the back-lighting. When Kaladin is holding just enough Stormlight to maintain his edge, the affect would be almost unnoticeable. As far as the Honorblade theory goes, well, they were created to be held by the Heralds. Who knows how they will affect others?- 128 replies

I'll agree with this to an extent. Eventually, even a stolen blade is likely to turn up again. Three or four generations down the line, someone is going to bring it back into play. There are so many ways you can justify having a blade that was taken during an assassination decades after it was lost.

I'm going to give the Parshendi the benefit of the doubt for the following reasons. First, if you were part of an honorable society and felt the need to kill someone immediately that was protected by a vast army, what other option would you have? Second, it seems they went through a great deal of trouble to ensure that the target of the assassination had as good a chance as possible of thwarting the assassination. They ordered Szeth to wear white, they ordered him to be seen, they set it up so that their was enough time for Galivar to not only get suited up in his Shardplate, but create a plan to divert the assassin. Third, they immediately took responsibility for the deed. I won't say that assassination is an honorable action, but I will say that the process they chose to implement the assassination was chosen specifically to ensure that the target had as good a chance at survival as possible while still allowing the attempt a chance at success. This is the best I could find on short notice.
