ok sorry if im intruding, I also only skimmer what you guys said but
it seems like
ai has the *potential* to be good.
Like that.
It (perhaps) isn't inherently "bad" (a complex definition itself), but perhaps the current usage of it is not in the best interest of humanity.
Like, using nuclear stuff for nukes for power plants.
If that makes sense.
This might just be a common repeated argument or truism idk but just a thought.
I also don't (well... technically I used the PyCharm IDE for a day or two, and it had numerous AI code auto complete features which I did admit to using) use AI for coding or debugging (aside from some AI overviews on the google) so I'm not sure if I can speak on whether that use is "good" or "bad."
I personally despise the uses of AI for content generation (I feel like there's a term for it but I forget). By content I mean text and images and music etc. (and videos, but those are images+sound and text if it has speech). Also, there might be hidden/less-obvious uses of this that I likely unknowingly use daily, but as far as I know I don't use it to create *for me.* I don't have it write/create something or "organize my thoughts" at all. But this shouldn't be about how wonderful I am because no one is wonderful, including me. I still use AI overview for a quick answer. I can use the excuse that it's shoved in my face (which it is), but I also enjoy the convenience, as I am a fallible human.
But back to the point, I hate AI-generated stuff. I'm not sure how much is personal bias versus intelligent/"intelligent" conclusions or whatever, but my view is thet it makes things the same in style and takes the work from you.
I guess you perhaps weren't arguing for AI-generated stuff.
I think this is a useless rant but
I saw your point about previous technology serving as AI does, and I have some thoughts (not necessarily objections).
I agree that tools like GPS or the internet or even less-obvious technology make life easier. This can be "good" or "bad," since I don't wanna think of specific terms.
I think with something like shoes, as you mentioned, we are so accustomed to them that they don't seem harmful. AI and other tech is newer and change is of course viewed with, well, mixed views. "Kids these days, on their phones."
What about "Those kids with their fancy word processors! We had to use typewriters, you know?"
"I can't believe kids these days have typewriters, back then we had to do it all by hand!"
I'm not that versed in the history of this technology and stuff so that could be completely false but it communicates my idea.
Uhhh idk what else to say.
Hmm..
Basically, nee tech can both dumb us down by taking the load of so we don't think about stuff we used to, like directions or libraries or whatever, but they also (potentially) allow us to achieve greater things. Like programming in assembly or punch cards vs a modern, high-level programming language. The latter allows you to do more. You still think a lot with both, and I don't see an immediate disadvantage from the latter.
It's important, in my opinion, to have something replace that. Fill the gap left by new tech.
Hopefully that was fine
edit: it also depends on how ethically the AI used or for what purposes, which depends on your definition of ethical. Also it's not like tech is used ethically anwuay
