You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
The Rooster replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
We were unpacking books after moving this week and My wife Put Alloy of Law alphabetically first of my hardcopy Brando Sando books... Nonono. You know your a sanderfan when you put your BS books in order of Cosmere Timeline . -
This isn't my favorite Brandon Series by far. I thought Steelheart was fine, and I was mostly not digging this one (especialy all the "metaphors" ..yuck), then the ending. Loved it. All in all I'd only give this book a 3/5, but from the moment we learn Calamity's true nature to the end of the book was phenomenal in my opinion.

Brandon tweeted that he will be tweeting a big announcement today at 4:00 PM EST . My guess is it will be a release date for Shadows of Self since his update bar is full. Anyone have any other ideas?

I think I'm able to format text properly. It's been since May that it hasn't worked for me. Great update!

Reactions to The Path of Daggers AND Winter's Heart
The Rooster replied to Fifth of Daybreak's topic in The Wheel of Time
OK So I'll ask this here. I have been on off going through the series and am giving Crossroads of Twilight another crack. I'm liking it after a break since now it's like I'm back with these characters . My question isn't about CoT however it's about New Spring. In publication order New Spring is next, and I'm considering skipping over. My question is SHOULD I skip (because I know I shouldn't) . It's if I skip New Spring will it matter. Anyone have any opinion on this? If I read all the way through will I be able to say that I've read the Wheel of Time if I skip New Spring? Also If it awesome let me know because then I'll just read it.- 12 replies

I have soured on The Hobbit movies. I loved Lord of the Rings, but this adaptation is just the wrong flavor. The Hobbit is a fun and clever book. The movies are dark and ominous and The Lord of the Rings come again. It's just not what I would have wanted to see. Others enjoy it tho so more power to them. Jackie Brown is the Best, I'll agree with you on that one Nait. I also love the Hell-boy movies. A very good example of an adaption that makes it it's own thing but is still good.

No more Saturday morning cartoons?
The Rooster replied to Arondell's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I don't get this as a news story either. There are TV channels that are literally nothing but Cartoons. -
I'm two chapters in and liking it so far. When he said it was a book from Auri's perspective this is exactly what I imagined. It's very atmospheric and the Underthing has a real personality from her perspective. It's creepy. I hope there's more hints of her possible secret identity.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things Came out today. Short short centered on Auri. I'm really looking forward to reading this at lunch.

Brent Weeks, The Lightbringer Series
The Rooster replied to Catalyst21's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I'm about halfway thru the book now It's super great. Way more cerebral and philosophical than previous entries. I'd love to talk shop if anyone else is that far. Biggest surprise is Andross. He's still the worst but now he's also the BEST. He's a total wild card now. I Love where Teia's arc is going, her first three chapters had me worried she would be treading water the whole book. Maybe too much time on the oar for a certain character but then again there's a ton of good introspection and flashbacks thanks to this situation. All in all I wish I were further from the end. -
Brent Weeks, The Lightbringer Series

I re-read blinding knife in 4 days. I meant it to take a week. It's too much of a page turner. I just started up Broken Eye. I'm really very happ to be reading it right now. So good right off the bat. -
גומי That's Hebrew for Rubber. Very random.

Brent Weeks, The Lightbringer Series
The Rooster replied to Catalyst21's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I just started re-reading Book 2. I am always blown away by how damnation readable his books are. The prose is just OK, but there's something about the world and the characters that just make these books page turners to an extreme. I can't stop reading and it's a re-read. Weeks is doing something right. Normally with a book like this when I look back things gets foggy and I can't remember why I gave it super high ratings, but when I look back on Weeks I think "It ain't literature, but it's a BLAST!" -
Halfway thru The Widow's House by Daniel Abraham, Book 4 of The Dagger and The Coin series. Awesome fantasy series set to end in one year. Worth reading.
-
Has anyone else read his stuff? His new book, Tigerman came out in the US today. I'm getting to it next. His first two books The Gone Away World and Angelmaker are absolutely astounding. I consider his books fantasy literature or, at least, ultra post modern lit. If you've read join in. If not, give him a whirl.

The Powder Mage, by Brian McClellan
The Rooster replied to Argent's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Yeah, he's a high priority for me because I'm from Cleveland. I've met him at a signing, he was super nice. I also love his books, which helps. Super looking forward to Broken Eye tho. -
The Powder Mage, by Brian McClellan
The Rooster replied to Argent's topic in Entertainment Discussion
It's also interesting that Priveleged represent the Nobility, Powder Mages are the emerging middle class, and knacked are lower class mostly. Brian has spoken on this before. I love this series and his short storie are all awesome. Hopes End and Servant of the Crown are the best. -
The Philosophy of The Stormlight Archive

The Philosophy of The Stormlight Archive
The Rooster replied to Zinfandale's topic in Stormlight Archive
WOR spoilers below Thanks for posting this topic Zinfandale. This has been something I've wanted to discuss for some time. I feel like one philosophies present in the Metanarrative, especially if you take into account Brandon's mission statement essay he posted prior tot WoR, is to make a modern Epic Fantasy with total sincerity and as little cynicism as possible. This means having the themes of the books present, not thru subverting genre tropes (a la George RR Martin or so called "grimdark authors), but by bringing the issues in question to the forefront. 1. An "Awesome" reading experience with top notch worldbuilding and exciting action. One of the mission statements of the SA is that it is , above all , fun! This is in itself commendable. Like I said this is Metanarrative. One of the points of the series is to Herald back in an era of Sincere epic fantasy. {there are other authors doing this as well . I think Pat Rothfuss is another champion of sincerity. He does have cynical characters, but the prose and poetry are all from his heart, genuinley} 2.Slavery / Racism/ Subjugation. This is another super big theme for Brandon across all of his works really, but I feel it comes forth beautifully in The Stormlight Archive. The idea of Lighteyes is so ridiculous and trivial that the fact that they don't see differences in skin color the way we do makes us seems like the ones with weird misconceptions. The Alethi culture in general is abhorrent, I mean Kholinar SHOULD be in Revolt. I think it's interesting that , for the most part, the story keeps the narrative from the point of view of those who perpetuate this injustice as well. SHallan and the Kholins are all lighteyes. Kaladin shows a good counterpoint starting as a slave in WoK and the injustice done to him is a damning piece of evidence to what Sanderson thinks of caste systems of rule. And all that is before you bring the Parshmen into the discussion! I'm going to wrap up on one more topic because I'm running out of steam. 3. This theme is the one being discussed already in this topic and it's the Honor Vs Odium discussion. It boils down to this. Can you win in life while adhering to your own personal morals when those you compete with or oppose do not? Also tied in with is a "do the ends justify the means" argument. I think he's putting out a firm "they do not" vibe, and I dig that. I'm very glad you started this topic. This kind of discussion was one of the main reasons I joined the forum. I've taken a hiatus since WoR came out mostly because I was burned out on speculation. I understand how shards work enough now that unending theory topics just make me gloss over. This is what I want to talk about! -
Brent Weeks, The Lightbringer Series
The Rooster replied to Catalyst21's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I'm getting legitimately stoked for this book. Despite there being a TON of good releases right now this is the one I'm looking forward to the most. Thinking about performing a re-read. I've never re-read this series so it should be quite fun. Also refreshing because looking back I'm hazy. I think there was a girl who can see microwaves in the last book. Does that sound right to anyone? -
I mean I know he's written multiple hugely influential works in genre and burbled Brandon and Brandon loves him and does event for him blah blah blah... But, I just feel like he's so out of touch with modern goodness. I'm sure he has a good grasp on the craft of writing and storytelling, but you can tell from the review he doesn't know enough about what he's talking. He's essentially saying "it's good but I hope he has his s*&^ together". It's like asking Strom Thurman what he thought of the Lego Movie. ( I just Googled Strom Thurman and he's been dead since 2003.. Looks like I'm firmly throwing stones from this glass house and I love it!) Full Disclosure : My thoughts of him being a homophobic jerk heavily influence my attitude this post
