  1. Favorite character(s): Ahhh it's hard to choose between Shallan and Wit, the cute bantering duo. But for SA specifically, then Shallan. She's probably my all-time favorite female character in fantasy literature because I can totally relate to her personality and experiences XD And I looove red-heads! (Also, I'd like to voice my love towards Szeth, Zahel, Mraize, Rysn and Axies.)

Favorite scene(s): Dalinar exchanging his Shardblade for the freedom of Bridge 4 and saving the lot of them in WoK + Kaladin falling from the sky and saving Dalinar in WoR.

  2. There's an even longer preview on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Brandon-Sandersons-White-Sand-Hardcover/dp/1606908855/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1459518386&sr=1-1&keywords=white+sand+brandon+sanderson

Note that in Brandon's introduction, he says that he originally conceived of Taldain as a planet

between two stars. There is an odd type of light on Darkside, coming from the other star.

Of course, we don't know if this is still the case in the latest edition.

Thanks for the reminder! This really made my day XD They even include concept design sketches at the back of the book, which is totally amazing! Can't wait to read it!

And there is also a map of Taldain (Dayside):

  4. Just a note: Brandon did talk about his Asian influence when he was visiting Taiwan.

I learned Korean during my two-year stay in Korea, so WoK is influenced by Korean culture in some way. But at the same time, I got inspired from the Chinese Three Kingdoms Period and used much stuff in my settings. [This really amazed me since I’ve never heard anything about it before.] I also applied some Chinese calligraphic elements and Confucian ideas of art. The characters’ appearance is not clearly written in the book, though they do look like Chinese.

Have you read The Way of Kings? In fact, when I was writing Alethkar, what I imagined was China during the Three Kingdoms Period. That assassin sent by the Parshendi [He meant Szeth in the prologue.] went to the palace, and what the others saw of him can be referred to the descriptions of white Europeans found in the Chinese Yuan Dynasty. He [szeth] is the only white people in that scene.

  5. In WoK Prime there were no spren as part of the world. In that version, where did shardblades come from?

I believe this is somewhat answered in the Prime excerpt included in the Altered Perceptions anthology. (Though I haven't read it yet. I just saw other people mention it.)

    WoK Prime spoilers:

Shardblades and Shardplates are Awakened artifacts. They are said to have been created by the Awakeners.

Just in case, I write this again in English:

This novella was translated into both simplified and traditional Chinese. I wonder which version you'd like to read? In Taiwan, TES was included in a short fiction collection titled 皇帝魂. They've released physical books but I'm not sure if ebooks can be found. While in mainland, the translation was only published in a fantasy magazine. I believe there's no official ebook, though a friend of mine managed to make a scanned version of the whole text and then convert it into pdf format. If you need it, I can send it to you via email =)

  7. Yeah that is my post =) I actually got the news just the day before yesterday. I knew this DMG staff for some time. IIRC his superior is in charge of the film project, so this friend's words can be trusted =) Last year he told me they would do TES film and that totally surprised me. It is supposed to be a co-production with some Chinese/Asian influence (but not set in a specific country or dynasty/era). The cast should be global, which means the film is likely to be in English. Though they seemed to have decided to find a Chinese actress to play Shai.

But please note that what was said in the post has not been confirmed by Brandon & co. yet, so everything can change at this point. I will keep in touch with those DMG folks =)

  8. I can kind of see the Stormfather being like "fine, I'll be your bonded spren." And then leaving Dalinar alone for the most part and just going off to... continue bringing highstorms to Roshar or whatever and checking in every once in a while... Probably with each passing highstorm.

... That's what the Stormfather does, right?

This is the right meme you need:

(Found in the Sanderson Memes thread.)

  9. Book 4 is Szeth?  I assumed Brandon just swapped books 3 and 5, while 4 would remain Eshonai.

About this, Brandon's answer five months ago is that he tends to use Eshonai for book 4. But it is due to change and we cannot be sure now.

Q&A from Reddit AMA last year:

Q: Is there any word on what character Stormlight 4 will follow?

    A: Most likely Eshonai.

  10. So, there're basically thirteen races (or at least thirteen races so far, if you divide those cultures into more parts) on Roshar: the Alethi, the Vedens, the Unkalaki (aka the Horneaters), the Herdazians, the Thaylens, the Natan, the Makabaki, the Selay, the Iriali, the Shin, the Reshi, the Listeners and the Aimians.

    A list of human races:

    1. The Alethi (People of Alethkar)
    1) Common features: tall stature, tan skin, black hair, lighteyes and darkeyes
    2) Inspiration from Earth: Asian-Hawaiian people (You can imagine them as east-Indian people.) [source]

    2. The Vedens (People of Jah Keved)
    1) Common features: fair skin, red hair
    2) Inspiration from Earth: Asian-Caucasian people (supposedly more Asian-like) [source]

    3. The Unkalaki (People of the Horneater Peaks)
    1) Common features: light tan skin (or just fair skin like the Vedens) (supposedly lighter than the Alethi), red hair, strong back molars to break shells and claws (result of Parshendi hybrids) [source]
    2) Inspiration from Earth: Mongolian people, Polynesian people, Russian people [source]

Rock and his culture started Mongolian long, long ago. (98-99 era, when I first wrote him.) As Roshar in general (and the Alethi in specific) became more Asian in look and less Semitic (though they are still a mash-up) I decided to push Rock's people in the direction of a human/parsh hybrid strain. This also was part of moving Rock himself from Yolen to Roshar, following after Dalinar and some other characters, who came earlier during the original Dragonsteel/Stormlight split in the early 2000s.

These changes drove the Horneaters away from Mongolian influences, though I can't say specifically where the Polynesian/Russian mashup came from. I liked how it read, and felt the linguistics supported the accent. These changes, of course, had a domino effect that resulted in the Veden people gaining their occasional red hair and fair skin from Horneater relation, which means Shallan is part parshman--though the relation is distant at this point. / [Emphasis is mine.]

    4. The Herdazians (People of Herdaz)
    1) Common features: deep tan skin (supposedly darker than the Alethi), dark crystalline fingernails (result of Parshendi hybrids)
    2) Inspiration from Earth: Hispanic people [source]

    5. The Thaylens (People of Thaylenah)
    1) Common features: long white eyebrows
    2) Inspiration from Earth: unknown

    6. The Natan (People of the former Natanatan)
    1) Common features: pale bluish skin, wide nose, wool-like white hair [WoK Ch.36]
    2) Inspiration from Earth: unknown

    7. The Makabaki (People of the former Makabakam)
    1) Common features: dark brown skin (or just dark skin), black hair [WoK Ch.14]
    2) Inspiration from Earth: unknown
Notable races: The Azish, the Emuli and the Tukari (People of Azir, Emul and Tukar)

    8. The Selay (People of the former Sela Tales)
    1) Common features: skin ripples [WoK Ch.52]
    2) Inspiration from Earth: unknown
Notable race: The Purelaker (People of the Purelake)
    1) Common features: leathery skin, dark hair, long limbs [WoR I-3]
    2) Inspiration from Earth: unknown

    9. The Iriali (People of Iri and perhaps Rira)
    1) Common features: yellow eyes, golden skin often painted various colors and patterns, golden hair with metallic sheen [WoK Ch.18, WoR I-2]
    2) Inspiration from Earth: unknown

    10. The Shin (People of Shinovar)
    1) Common features: short stature, pale skin, large round eyes, men tending to be bald, no epicanthic folds
    2) Inspiration from Earth: unknown

    11. The Reshi (People of the Reshi Isles)
    1) Common features: tan skin, straight black hair, rounded features [WoR I-9]
    2) Inspiration from Earth: Hispanic people (or at least for Lift) [source]

Lift was partially developed out of me wanting to build a character who was awesome but was so different from what everyone would think of. 'Cause you say knight and they think of white dude in armor and I wanted something very different from that. And that's where she came from. It also came partially from my wife reading a lot of fantasy and complaining and she's like "You know the asians show up in fantasy, asian culture inspires a lot. European culture of course does. You see a lot of these things but where are the hispanics?" Yeah there's one. So she challenged me to put a hispanic culture in my books because I had never done it before and so Lift is an outgrowth of that, so are the Herdazians. They are meant to be sort of in the same way that the Alethi are inspired by Korean culture, mashed up with this sort of concept of medieval knights. Shallan is based a little off of Western American/Europe culture. The Herdazians are launching off some of the original hispanic concepts. So the thing is, you want every culture to be new and original but you are working from somewhere. And the problem is we all work from the same stories for so long that is part of the reason why fantasy is starting to feel so stale. / [Emphasis is mine.]

  11. White Sand graphic novel looks so great! It's even better than I expected! (Love the style and coloring. And yeah, white robes! Though Kenton seems a little older than I used to think ;P)

Elantris sequels are coming! I just felt so excited about them! I also wonder what they're going to call the whole series.(Elantris Trilogy or other things?) (But when it comes to Dragonsteel and Liar... Man that "looong way off" really is frustrating.)

That Cosmere star chart part made me freak out, too. I never really expect it will come out so early!

  12. This WoB may help you:

Q: I primarily listen to the books, so my spelling and visual imaging might be a bit off. But, the food that Lopen likes, chouta, is that kind of like a Runza?

A: Kinda, kinda not. They eat flatbread in Roshar--the bread doesn't rise. So in that respect, it's more like a burrito. Only, they roll it more like a cone, and they fill it with chunks of meat covered in gravy. The flavor is going to be more runza like than burrito like, but it's kind of like a pita filled with meatballs.

Tumblr user kalynaanne had managed to make a real chouta, and this post should interest you =)
