Did book 5 affect your feelings of the whole series?
Aredor replied to christianrapper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Counter to that, I'd say that the end of wind and truth, and to an extent both RoW and OB, are the setback of a greater whole. We need to remember that this is merely book 5 in a 10-book series. Yeah, it's the end of arc 1, but it's a much reduced impact(?) of an arc. Instead of something like Era 1 that ends quite dramatically and finally, this ends in a massive cliffhanger. Regarding this series as a ten-book one rather than two five-book series is something that I think is very important to narritavely understanding this series. Besides this one point, I agree with your quite well stated beliefs. -
The Shift in the Presentation of Mental Health
Aredor replied to VirtuousTraveller's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's all Wit's fault. If he hadn't used the word of "therapist" in their ONLY conversation in the entire book, then we probably wouldn't be having this conversation to the extent that we are. We wouldn't have gotten the awful line of "I'm his therapist." Kaladin just should never have been depicted as a bona fide therapist- he should have been depicted as someone who is just trying to help in the way that he helped the others in RoW with NATURAL conversation. Every conversation that Kal has with Szeth/Nale/Ishar is incredibly forced for something that was depicted so naturally in RoW. With Nale and Ishar, the problem that people are having is that the story depicts Kal's 'Therapy' as healing them as opposed to what really happened, with the Wind / 5th Ideal healing them. It was once Nale started talking about the days where he knew Wind that he stopped his Herald Madness. Ishar was 'fixed' because of Kal's 5th Ideal that led into Wind/Nightblood removing the Taint that Ishar had brought upon himself by drinking of the Dark One's energy/True Power Perpendicularity. Those are good things to happen to these men- but it's depicted as Kaladin healing them through 'therapy.' -
Exactly! Like, imagine if instead of that awful Adin interlude in RoW, we had gotten an interlude about the Vorin Church. Although, don't they all live in Jah Keved? I guess that's the issue: we don't know! I agree that we need more regarding religion in the back half- it's something that we lost out on, with really only Navani thinking about it with any frequency. I think that the main thing that separates these writings from other main fantasy writings is the use of religion in worldbuilding. Wheel of Time/ LoTR both didn't have religion, and I think that having it in the story improves the sense of immersion and of culture that we can get through a world. Definitely something I'd love to see more of!

It must be said.

There's a quote somewhere in TLM where someone says something about "Golden fairy people" in Bilming. That seems to indicate that the Iriali went to Scadrial after leaving Roshar.

The Shift in the Presentation of Mental Health
Aredor replied to VirtuousTraveller's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I remember a wob somewhere that says something like "I wanted a main character with depression, but I didn't want the story to be about the depression." Well, now that's just a complete lie. The entire Kaladin story has shifted from him trying to do the best he could do into him delivering the worst line in the Cosmere. "I'm his therapist," indeed. The story has become ABOUT his depression, not about him. I feel like RoW did such a good job with this, and then... sigh. I also feel like the series has become sort of a mental health museum. Every character's got to have something, right? They've all got to deal with their mental health! But that happens so often that the story and plot now "has" to revolve around their conditions. Here's to hoping it gets better in the later books. -

This is exactly what Dalinar did here. Was it a bad choice? Maybe, but every other option was worse. If he'd killed Gav, the war still would have continued for a thousand years. If he'd let Gav kill him, then that's kind of the same thing. Both options were worse than flipping the board. -

So in this book, we got both Kal and Szeth (and maybe Shallan??) swearing their fifth ideals. And then Szeth broke his bond and Kal left for the Hyperbolic time chamber. So we still don't know what the Fifth Ideal does. Yet I think I found a clue. Chapter 135 So I'm thinking that the fifth ideal slows the aging process somewhat like whatever happened with the Heralds post-Ashyn and pre-Oathpact. Thoughts? Ideas?

US Hardcover, Chapter 58, page 568 once-mate should be hyphenated, if I remember WoR/RoW correctly. Same chapter, page 570 This is when the Chasmfiend tells Venli about why it came to the Shattered plains to pupate. Because it's a Chasmfiend, cocoon should be chrysalis here. Edit: Chapter 95, page 932 Seems like there's an extra 'but' there. Chapter 100, page 979 Orderiness should be Orderliness Chapter 110, page 1037 When Wit gives Kaladin the original story, he refers to the people as the Uvara. If Uvala is the island chain, that name is not mentioned in the Way of Kings. Chapter 133, page 1219 Wanted to include this one just in case- when Adolin is fighting Abidi, he refers to his weapon as a sword instead of a candelabra or as a weapon. It's probably not supposed to be literal, but I still wanted to mention it. Chapter 144, page 1290 I believe that is a question, not a statement, and thus requires a question mark. Epilogue, page 1325 This wording makes no sense. Postlude, page 1328 Should Kalak be thinking about his enemies as Voidbringers, given he lived through the Cataclysm of Ashyn, and his people were originally given that term?

US Hardcover, chapter 50 Page 477 Feels like it would flow better with "the mysterious force," given that the preceding paragraph already talked about the force. Page 478 Who is "people?" Wouldn't it make more sense for it to say "but she called herself Ash," or "but she preferred to be called Ash?"

1-5, Baxil's Interlude Not sure if this one is an error, but Baxil thinks of Shalash as "Shalash". Since he's Emuli, shouldn't he think of her with the Emuli title? Or is the Emuli title just her actual name?

There's the classic example of "Syl, however, would Syl," for one. I'm not typically one to complain about prose, but my main complaint is with the sentences being interspersed with "honestly" and "literally," even when the statement is supposed to be taken seriously.

Haven't read everything here, but here are my main thoughts on the debate. My thoughts on it now are much different than what I'd said originally. I agree with OP with point 1. Jasnah's hubris was her main reason for her loss. She really thought she could best a Shard of Adonalsium. Very convincing point there. My main issue with these chapters is with Fen. Taravangian fell into a common debate flaw, in attacking the character of his opponent. He didn't try to convince Fen, he just let Jasnah do it. Essentially, he made no arguments on his own, he merely showed Fen that her supposed ally only cared about her own interests. Actually, now that I'm writing it out, Taravangian's plan was brilliant. Showing that he, as a Shard, could be trusted more than her supposed ally. I've changed my mind. The debate works.

Wind and Truth Full Book Reactions (Cosmere Edition)
Aredor replied to LewsTherinTelescope's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Exactly my thoughts- I feel like we inadvertently spoiled ourselves on this reveal, and it made Shallan's journey too predictable for us. Same thing with Child Champion, because that twist probably was awesome... if we hadn't known about it and if we hadn't had years to either explain why we liked/disliked the theory. -
Wind and Truth Full Book Reactions (Cosmere Edition)
Aredor replied to LewsTherinTelescope's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I absolutely loved this book. Everything up until day 10 was, for me, 10/10. And then day 10 happened, and it sort of felt like it was just going a little off the rails. A lot of decisions were made, that for me, felt rushed. I think Day 10 could have used an extra fifty pages, to be honest. Kaladin/Szeth plotline This was really just not a Kaladin book. It was the first book where Kaladin was not in the top two characters that the story focused around, at least. I think that's fine, but was a little odd with how much it was different than everything else. I think that everything with Szeth was absolutely phenomenal. His flashbacks felt like a return to the truly useful flashbacks, like Kal/Shallan/Dalinar's. The realization that KoWaT author is Szeth's wife is also really cool. Also, Nightblood is awesome flaming sword in Shadesmar. That's hilarious. I didn't care as much for the Kaladin Therapy sessions/ namedropping Therapy/Therapist into these Herald Situation, but I did like how that wasn't the resolution with Ishar. (That "Oh yeah, I wrote Wandersail and Fleet" was hilarious.) Anti-Ghostblood plotline LET'S GO CHANA DAVAR IS REAL And Shallan is trapped in the CR. Wow. And Mraize is dead. And Iyatil is dead. Cool resolutions of those plotlines. I did really like them hopping around the SR, trying to blend in and find the Ghostbloods. That was really fun. Oh yeah, and Renarin/Rlain exists now. Do I care about either one of them more than during RoW? Nope. Adolin plotline Maya is incredible. She singlehandedly saved Roshar. Her tone of voice talking to Adolin is awesome. I love her. The concept of the Unoathed is really cool, and that part about Adolin not liking the Oaths is also incredible. The concept of defending the dome feels kind of like a zombie invasion where there's zombies crawling out of a hole in the ground. Cool idea. AND THEN ADOLIN LOSES A LEG NOOOOOOOOOOO Also, Taln and Ash when they're fired up are terrifying. Also, May Aladar. That is all. Sigzil/(Was Venli even there?) Sig was cool. His leadership was very different than Kal's, but it did work. They saved the Shattered Plains, thanks to some fun trickery. Love to see that. Sigzil's moment of betraying his oaths is a really cool scene. Storm Moash. Venli's presence was noted. Jasnah... existed. So... this plotline happened in like 2 chapters. And the debate was just like: T: You have no morals. J: Yes, I do! T: No, you don't. Here's why. J: Oh, you're right. Whoops. Jasnah, who was reportedly incredibly good at debating, just... isn't. But I do like characters being broken, so... there's that. Dalinar/Navani/Storming TANAVAST Wow. That... went differently than expected. Brandon, you absolute troll. Dalinar and Navani's history side trip was really cool. Turned out that Mraize blowing up the Perpendicularity really just didn't matter. But anyway, there were some cool revelations. Taln tried to kill Cultivation... FOURTH MOON??? The contest worked really well, and then Gavinor showed up. Angsty emo 25-year old Gavinor. What was the point of Gav's and Lift's friendship? Well, now Gav's ten years older than her, so that's even weirder than before. But really, Sanderson? Child champion? There were cooler ideas! Anyway, Dalinar taking up Honor, seeing there were no good options for him except to break the Contract and sacrifice Honor, and ultimately losing felt like a good midpoint to the series. And Navani's in stasis. AND THEN THERE WAS JUST TANAVAST POVS! LIKE WHAT Overall, this book was really good, like a 9/10. Cool things, cool characters, and cool stories. Lots of good theorizing fodder. Final rankings are thus: RoW WoK WaT WoR OB -
Tien faked his own death and will be either Odium's Champion or Ishar's champion. And then Kal will have to fight him. None of the 3 (Kal, Shallan, Adolin) will actually die, but they'll all be separated somehow and will have to reunite in the back half. Adolin becomes the first Lifebinder. Jasnah will get overthrown by CS Gavilar. Kal will have to fight Yelig-Nar/Szeth, and will win because even though Szeth is a master of all ten surges, Kal is aggressively mediocre at therapy.
