Leather-bound Edition of Elantris
Windrunner replied to WeiryWriter's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Oh wow. Cosmere leather bound books... As someone who already owns two copies of Elantris, I'm starting to wonder how many I can get before it becomes overkill. xD -
I recently read The Emperor's Blades, which I had been looking forward to for some time. I read a preview for the book a couple years back, when it first came out and was intrigued. I only just got around to actually acquiring a copy. Unfortunately, my positive initial impression did not translate to an enjoyable total experience. My biggest problem with the book was the female point of view, Adare. Perhaps I've been lucky to only read authors that are decent with female perspectives, but this one was just terrible, in my opinion. Her characterization was flat, and there was lots of telling and no showing, along with what I feel are some overdone stereotypes. There were several other problems with the book, none of which I considered to be too egregious. I'd probably read the other two if I saw them in the library to see if it gets better, but I'm not rushing out to buy the next one. Not sure what I'll try next, perhaps give Codex Alera a shot or maybe take one final crack at Discworld. You'll have to tell me how you enjoy Autumn Republic. I loved the first two, but felt the third one did not meet my hopes. However, based on the reviews I've seen, I'm very much in the minority there, so I hope you enjoy it.

I think the Bennet problem is still present. Sometimes it is spelled Bennett, which is how we have it on the wiki.
-
Have we actually checked the YA editions that were released to see if this was fixed in those? Also wasn't there a problem with the Bennet? Or something similar with the spelling? That one might have been resolved though.

That's part of it, but it's a little different than that. TWG was a fansite for a variety of other authors, who were at the time mostly unknown. I believe they all knew each other pretty well, and it started, in part, so that they could all stay in touch (I want to say that most knew each other from The Leading Edge or BYU, but I may be misremembering that). Dan Wells was there as well, if you know his work. As Brandon became more popular, his section of the forums started to dwarf the others, and kind of take up a lot of space. That's when the Josh, Mi'ch, and Eric as well as a few other admins who are less active nowadays decided to spin off a Brandon dedicated community to give TWG a little more space. After that, it continued on for a few more years but gradually got less and less active (thus the high density of spam posts you see) until it eventually bit the dust (Was it DDOS'd?). All the people who had originally wanted to stay in touch had Facebook and other methods of communications by then. That's when we became Brandon's official fan forums. The read only version is fun for people who used to post there and still want a way to view there old posts. I think almost all the official Brandon stuff (Q&A's, cosmere stuff, etc) have since been moved, but it can be kind of fun to see him posting on a forum like a normal guy and how things were before he took off as an author.

I agree as well, Eric.

In my personal opinion, (not the staff's) that's kind of missing the point though. Members have the power to upvote and downvote as they please. As long as they are not abusing that privilege by targeting someone or a certain group, they get to decide what specifically they use their voting power for. A lot of times being offended and disagreeing go hand in hand, but not always. There's no specific criteria for when someone is or is not allowed to downvote. I realize that downvotes can be hurtful and you may wonder what you did wrong. However at the end of the day, it's really just a number. I've gotten downvotes for things I was surprised about. But you can't please everyone, and if you find yourself extremely upset about a handful of downvotes, I'd personally recommend that you reevaluate how much value you put in downvotes. It's just not that big a deal. If something is actually seriously offensive or downvote abuse is occurring it's the work of the moment to contact the staff. Addressing a point that came up earlier, making voting public does not help us track abuse easier, because admins can already determine who does the voting without trouble. And there has been no trouble handling problems like that, so I don't see that as being a point in favor of removing anonymity in the voting.

With the new version of IPB, it will be possible to cancel upvotes and downvotes, solving the problem of accidentally hitting one of those buttons once and for all.

Why isn't Hallandren wracked with earthquakes?
Windrunner replied to ecohansen's topic in Warbreaker
Manywar was three hundred years prior to the events of Warbreaker. The Manywar page on the wiki is complete, and could be a helpful refresher. -
Is it possible to become a beta reader for Sanderson?
Windrunner replied to dayman's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Well it's a little late to be a beta reader for WoR. But more seriously, just asking is not going to be enough or really help your case guys. Way more peoe on this forum would want to be a beta reader than are actually necessary. Just keep moving along like normal, posting with accurate and useful information, know the books very well, and things such as that. And bear in mind this is not a guarantee. It's no reflection on you if you're not, I'm honestly doubtful that Peter picks people directly from the forums, although people on the forums have become beta readers. -
I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being the King Lopen the First he has referenced before.

Here's the quote on that.

Funnily enough, Obliteration's appearance was actually modeled on Jim Butcher's.

Is anyone here not in college?
Windrunner replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
I am currently in college (American) right now. I'm majoring in "Oh God, how can I possible find something that I can stay interested in for my entire life?" xD -
I watched the whole thing over the course of a week and really enjoyed it. I liked the duality that Matt had going for him as a public defender by day and a vigilante by night. The exploration of the consequences of the Battle of New York was also interesting for me, and something I haven't seen explored before. I also really liked just about every part of Fisk. He arguably made the show for me. I thought he was brilliantly characterized and that his backstory was fascinating. His date scenes with Vanessa were great, definitely gave him a lot of character that villains don't always get. I wouldn't say that I had a week stomach but there were some scenes of violence that really seemed quite brutal to me. Daredevil full season Spoilers

Okay, I think we're done here. Ete'ni is gone, there's no way to know how or why. She left of her own accord, we don't need to speculate about her character or reasons for doing so. I'm gonna lock this topic now, because there's no real need for any more discussion here. Thanks!

Hmm, this is a toughie. I want to note that I do love Harry Potter, but it's kind of its own thing in my mind, so even though it's not on this list, I do love it dearly. Cosmere (I do consider it all to be one series, but if I can't, I say Stormlight Archive) The Kingkiller Chronicle A Song of Ice and Fire Gentlemen Bastards The Dresden Files

Honestly, in this case I don't think anyone actually knows who they are for certain, and if we did, it wouldn't really mean much to us. These are the sort of things that will likely turn up in the annotations if Brandon ends up having time to do those. The only fact I know for sure, aside from that they are Brandon's friends, is that Drehy is based on a real guy that Brandon knows who is gay. That's really about it, unless I've missed something.

Sound the alarms! Brandon's got an AMA tomorrow over on /r/books. Starts at 2 PM eastern time. Get those questions ready folks! (I can't think of what I want to ask myself xD)

My apologies if I seemed overly passionate. I was honestly incredulous, not annoyed. It seemed akin to saying that George R. R. Martin is uncomfortable with depictions of violence and sexual content in his books. I just don't understand how someone would come to that conclusion. Also thank you for your defense, Argent. I don't expect everyone to be familiar with that story or to have met Brandon in person, but I thought that a bit of anecdotal evidence could be useful for showing how Brandon acts, instead of just what he says. I don't think monetize is a dirty word inherently, but I got the indication that McMillion thinks that Brandon is more concerned with making money off of books instead of telling stories he wants to share. I think that's quite a claim to be making and that for Brandon to do such would seem to be a betrayal of his own artistic integrity, but that's beside the point. There's definitely nothing wrong with wanting to make money off of your work, however. I'd just like to reiterate again that I did not intend to seem angry or rude in my response. I just do not understand how a man who gives away copies of his self-published ebooks to those who purchase physical copies and has hinted that he wouldn't be entirely upset at people who pirate copies of books they already own in a physical format could be seen as primarily concerned with monetization. Anyway, I'd be quite content to let this die now that I've properly apologized and clarified what was perhaps an overzealous defense on my part. Anyone here read Slow Regard? I liked it for what it was, but it definitely did not appeal to me as much as the main books do. I've been wanting to reread them, but I've lent both NotW and WMF to friends who've had them for months. :/

O.o Perhaps, I've misunderstood you, but are you saying that Brandon's primary focus is making money off of novels rather than telling stories? The man who put a free pdf of a book on his website so anyone could try out his style of work and not have to spend any money on it if they didn't like it? The guy who has said that even if he never sold a book in his life, he would write until the day he died because he loves it so much? The man, who the very first time I met him, paid for half my dinner because the con had given him more per diem than he thought he needed? I don't claim to know Brandon like Josh or Mi'ch do, but I do know that this is not a man who grubs for money or would be willing to churn our work he felt sub par for a quick buck. I personally read Rothfuss and Brandon for different things. Pat's books have prose I enjoy and a slower and more thoughtful narrative. Brandon's books intentionally don't really focus on prose, but also contain more action and characters I tend to like more than Pat's. I've also never screamed out loud and pumped my fist in excitement during the Kingkiller Chronicle, but maybe that's just me... I don't think it's so much a question of quality as it is a stylistic choice, but I'm sure there are plenty out there who'd disagree with me.

Looking at the description of the book, there's some interesting stuff to see. What do you guys think the four faiths are? Off the top of my head, we've heard reference to Survivorism, Sliverism, Pathism, and Trellism. Are these the ones? Are there really any Trellists aside from Mr. Suit and Miles? Did all the Terrispeople convert to Pathism, or are any following their old religion now that it has been rediscovered?

Big Mistborn news today! Tor has released the cover for the next book in the Mistborn Adventures series, Shadows of Self! This cover was done by Chris McGrath, the same artist who drew the covers for The Alloy of Law and the original paperback covers for the Era One Mistborn trilogy (not to be confused with the YA version of the Mistborn trilogy, which had different covers by Sam Weber). The book has also been given an official release date of October 6, 2015. While Tor states that this is an "expected" release date, thus could be subject to a bit of change, we've now got a pretty solid idea of when this book will be coming out. We also got our first look at a description of the book. So, what do you guys think? The cover appears to depict Wax and Marasi being all serious and whatnot. What are the four faiths? What acts of terrorism? Feel free to wander on over to the forums to discuss the cover or anything else of interest!

Check it out everyone! I like it! Link to Tor.com with the cover

Ah okay, good to know for sure what you were referring to. I don't think you have the proper definition of Investiture. I'll quote what I said in my original post. Investiture is not a connection to a Shard that allows someone to use a Shard's energy. Investiture is that energy itself. With it, it does bring a connection to the Shard it is derived from, but that is more of a side effect. It is not some key. Investiture is spiritual energy. Here's a quote where Brandon confirms it to be energy, not an access key. I think what you're looking for, the ability to draw a Shard's energy through the realms would be found in a person's spiritual DNA (or sDNA as we typically abbreviate it). Hope that clears things up. Mmhmm, I got that. I just wanted to add a quote in to get rid of any uncertainty on the Anti-Adonalsium thing. I still do believe that that quote at the very least assures us that it's not at all involved in powering aluminum, and most likely rules out an Anti-Adonalsium altogether.
