    I think it possibly should be in the entertainment discussion, but it's probably fine. Wheel of Time, of course. Dune is technically sci-fi, but I think it kinda fits your "character who can nuke the field" thing, and it's something everyone should read.

    When you read Mistborn as a 4th grader and wondered whether it was worth it to have all your youthful innocence stripped from you at such a young age, especially since you had friends reading the magic treehouse books and thinking kisses were completely inappropriate and murder was out of the question. Then, by freshman year when the rest of the world catches up to you, you have to reread every cosmere book so that you can socialize with the humans.
