    The girl’s eyes widened and a flood of what-if’s spilled through her brain, a mass of panic that destroyed everything in her mind with glee. It’s not me, she reminded herself. Besides, I’ve come this far already. Better not to keep going alone. “Actually…I would love to. I’m Dayla.” Dayla shook her head. “Not until recently.”

    She stiffened at his touch, but seemed to welcome the distraction. “I, uh…I don’t usually see this side of the world. Worlds.”

    The girl rummaged around in her bag, pulling out a torn shirt. “Would this…uh…” she glanced over at then winced. “I’ll just stay here for a minute.”

    “Uh.” The girl blinked rapidly. “Get rid of the blood?”

    The girl winced. “I’m not too good with blood,” she said rapidly, trying very hard not to look at him.

    The girl snickered. At the sight of blood, she immediately panicked, stumbling away from the group before sitting in the snow. Weak, It chided in her mind. She didn’t reply.

    “Huh.” The girl grinned, watching curiously. “Is your name actually Gem, or is that a translation error?”

    She winced. “Long story. Little machine I made. I didn’t realize I’d end up somewhere without anyone.”

    “No, not at all,” she said, smiling faintly. “Don’t know what you mean by a summoning storm, but I’ve been here a couple days and you’re the first people I’ve seen.”

    The girl nodded once. “Are you guys local?”

    The girl blinked, then fiddled with something on her collar. “Is this better?”

    The light stopped, then moved hesitantly towards them, revealing a girl in a faded beanie, jeans, and a thick coat. She asked something in an unfamiliar language.
