  1. Dayla smiled tightly and kept fiddling with the wires from her pocket , forming them into what looked like a pile of trash, only there were tiny bolts of electricity jumping between the pieces. Then she took it apart and started again.
  2. Dayla glared at him. Waves of panic immediately ran through her mind, covering every possible topic and then some. She sat down as far from the pair of women as possible.
  3. Dayla started again and turned to glare at the man. “Is this the only form of transport around here?”
  4. Dayla starts. Mother didn’t send them. She couldn’t. But…did she? “Should I know you?”
  5. Dayla starts to sit in one, then walks towards the women instead, staring intently at the sheet of metal.
  6. “Sure,” Dayla said. “If some people are scared of something, it’s just them. They have to deal with the fact that they’re less brave than everyone else. For me, I know that I have to deal with this thing that no one else does.” Easy to say. Harder to believe.
  7. Dayla shrugged. “It is what it is. It’s not like I like it, but…at least I have an excuse, right? A lot of people don’t.”
  8. “You’re not flying this thing, are you?”
  9. Dayla winced. This is why it’s easier to stay on your own. “It’s not like you’re thinking,” she said. “I have a…” Curse. Defect. Illness. “There was an accident. It messed with my head, changed the way my brain works. It’s not you, or this machine, or even this world. I’m always afraid.”
  10. It spiked. Yes, her heart whispered, screamed, growled. No, her brain struggled to believe. “Not about this,” she finally said.
  11. Dayla snickered, pulling a few screws and electric paraphernalia from her pocket to fiddle with. Slowly, her smile faded.
  12. Dayla immediately pulled back her hand. “Is it safe?”
  13. My top five favorite things about the word rue (in no particular order)

    1. I am Rue - Rue means me.

    2. Rue is a word among friends. Rue is the word you use when you set yourself up for teasing, the word you think with a laugh while going for a midnight hike.

    3. The general vibe - rue. It’s soft, it’s kind, it’s brave and it’s funny. Rue is a word that feels more like a person than a description.

    4. Rue is not regret. You do not rue your actions at night in a flood of tears; like I said, rue happens among friends. Regret stays with you forever, but rue is a passing thing, an acquaintance you will meet again but that does not dwell within you.

    5. Rue has a sort of clarity. Rue is not overwhelming or desperate. Rue is the definition of doing something you know will lead to tears and joy. Rue lets you see the finish even while suffering through the journey.

  14. Dayla circles around it, trying to get a sense for how it works. Nothing like home…
  15. Dayla smiled, but her eyes stayed sad. "I always wanted an older sister," she said, more to herself than Aventine.
  16. Dayla nodded and looked away, fighting her growing discomfort. "Looks like the transport is close." @Argenti
  17. Dayla swallowed, feeling It awaken in her mind, holding her tongue and trying to keep her from speaking. Somewhere behind it, though, she felt steel. She was not going to give in. "Family."
  18. "I'm okay," Dayla said, forcing a smile. "I've just never thought about it that way."
  19. "Oh." Dayla frowned, looking deeply troubled. "Uh." Dayla swallowed. "I guess you could say I'm running away," she mumbled.
  20. Dayla started. "No...is everyone very poor, then?"
  21. Dayla watched it curiously. “Huh,” she murmured. “It looks so…professional.” She glanced at the man, fiddling with an object on her collar until she was speaking in his language. “Are you a noble?”
  22. “Oh,” Dayla said quietly, surprisingly comforted. Then immediately guilty for finding relief in another’s pain. “I’m sorry.”
