I've been trying to fix a problem for two hours, and now I'm done and it's past midnight so time to share!
The story:
You see, about two hours ago I realized something for the first time: library cards can EXPIRE. So, the audiobook I was listening to (Elantris) had just finished its loan period. This normally wouldn't be a problem, because it's on hoopla where as long as you are under a certain amount of loans for the month you can just check it out again. But for some ODD REASON, it was telling me that something was wrong with my library card. After spending a while trying to figure out where the problem was, I finally identified that my card had expired five days ago.
So now, I was unable to check out the book and it wasn't available in the other library that I have a card for. So naturally, I look up how to renew my library card. And turns out, you need to physically go to a library location with your card and ID and stuff to get it renewed. Only thing is, I wanted to listen to the book now, because it's a good book and that's how I fall asleep.
What this lead to was an enormous rabbit hole of going between library websites and seeing if I could get a library card remotely (I couldn't). But it turns out there was an option for an online-only library card that I could get instantly. So now I have that, and it will never be used again once I renew my actual card.
Why is this a thing? Why do they expire? Most of all, why do you need to renew them in person? So many questions, so few answers. Thankfully, my heart can now rest and I can listen to my audiobook peacefully, content with the result of a job well done.
TLDR: I got angry that I couldn't listen to my book because my library card expired, so I researched for an hour and a half and ended up making a second partial-access card for the same library so I could listen to it tonight as I go to sleep.
Still TLDR: Library card expired, me sad. New card of questionable legality, me happy.
Happy Ookla Season to you all, and see you tomorrow. (Later today?)

That's cool, ookla the craw (I'm fairly certain you're the storming storm father).
-
@Thaidakar the Ghostblood You are correct, I am The Storming Stormfather
-
Ah, I knew it.

I would like to petition for the banning of small removable parts on frequently handheld objects.
I've already lost two pen springs AND the tip of my stylus.
And don't get me started on mechanical pencils. I don't usually lose the actual pencil parts, but all the lead is gone in like 2 minutes.
-
All the mechanical pencils that I've been using lately just...fall apart.
Also the erasers erode to quickly, and then when I found an actual working mechanical pencil and had access to more lead I couldn't pry the completely eroded eraser out of the actually working one to get a new one in.
I need a nice mechanical pencil; then I'll be fine.

GOOD DAY! It is my 800th post.
I have made a brand new forum game called 'Rate the Rate Above You'! Go check it out, and see how stupid it can get!

Wait, do status updates not count as content either? IS MY WHOLE LIFE A LIE?

I don't know how many people will care, but mini-announcement:
I'm officially making the Tower of Ghenjei ICanon roleplay available to people outside of the original subplot group. If you are interested in joining, you can DM me and I'll see if I can work out somewhere where you can fit in. Depending on where we are in the plot, though, this might not always work.
@Ookla the Unknowing Do you still want in on the RP?
That is all.
-
I've been very bored and tired recently.
Almost my whole day today was playing Minecraft and checking to see if the roleplays I'm in were active, which they weren't for the most part.
On the bright side, I got WoK from the library so there's something.
-
I have Ookla'd myself. And now I can't change my name for a while so you'll be seeing this past Ookla season I think. whoops.

My brother just finished TFE, and is very upset about... (spoilers for all of Mistborn)
SpoilerKelsier's death. (Seriously this time big spoilers)
SpoilerSo then he goes and LOOKS UP whether Kelsier comes back and accidentally gets spoiled on part of Secret History. And now he doesn't even want to read WOA or HOA because he only cares about Kelsier, probably due to a lack of time emotionally processing the death (the boy reads faster than I could with F Zinc and a time bubble). And also he knows about the Coppermind and everything is spoilers AAHHHHH. Here's hoping I can convince him to actually read the rest of the series before SH. Maybe I'll tide him over with The Lost Metal or something.
But other than that, indoctrination going pretty well. Unfortunately, in regards to my own reading of WOK, very little progress has been made and I no longer feel that I can justify the two weeks overdue I've had this book for when I've barely made progress on it especially because I also missed all of the book club meetings due to life stuff and the same librarians are in charge.
*Deep breath*
Life stuff sucks.

I am sick, unfortunately. Never a good feeling. Especially right before Halloween.
On the bright side, that means I can be more active on here tomorrow!
Yayyyyy
Insomniac Poem: Sick Edition
I am quite ill,
My throat is quite sore.
It hurts when I cough,
To rest is a chore.
So again here I find
Myself writing a poem.
I like writing verses
And I like to show 'em
Halloween rolls around,
It's October's end.
There are costumes to wear
And candy to send.
I ought to get sleep now,
Or else I may not
Be healthy for when
I must round the block.
So ends the night before night before night
Of costumes and candy and cartoonish fright.
Goodnight to the bats, the black cats, the moonlight.
Goodnight to the sickness, my ailment, my blight.

I really like your insomniac poems
-Cinnamon, a few minutes ago.
Well, me too!
Insomniac Poem v3
It's that time again where I'm up too late,
Tonight I had work to complete.
But now I'm done so here's my debate:
Stay online or go to sleep?
It might be quite the obvious question,
and yet I find myself quite lost.
Sleep is always the suggestion,
and staying lucid comes with a cost.
So why am I so unable
to drop my head and close my eyes?
The issue I find on the table
is the presence of this here screen.
I love existing on the Shard,
I'd love to all the time.
But it does make it very hard
to reach that restfulness sublime.
So goodnight to all,
goodnight to screen.
Goodnight to friends and hello to dreams.
-
I did it again. Whoops, missed 400 posts. But also yay!
Here's some food for thought: Protagonists are just people who fall really hard for the sunk cost fallacy and get away with it.
-
Just hit 300 posts! Hurrah. I don't know if I should be doing something special or whatever, but I guess it doesn't matter because I already missed the milestone.
-
What do you call a footnote by a pre-calculus teacher who works part time designing the scenes for movies?
A set-builder notation!

Insomniac poem v2
I wonder why I cannot sleep
And then I realize:
I'm listening to Warbreaker
So it's not a surprise.
Perhaps I should stop listening,
Sink down and close my eyes.
Yet as I climb the plotline slope
To continue, I decide
Insomniac poem: limerick edition
The thoughts racing through my head,
Lore thought up in my bed.
Frankly, I'm certain
That I ought to close curtains
But my mind demands to be fed.

Ever feel stressed out about something, and then whatever that thing is gets resolved, but it takes a second for your brain to register and so you still feel like there's more to do?

Sort of… what’s up?
-
Mainly school stuff. It's happened to me twice in less than a week now, so I was wondering if it was a common thing.
-
A lot.
-
Hello fellow sharders! You may now ask me anything, in the thread titled "Ask The Aspiring Archivist Anything." I know, very creative.
Have at it!
-
An insomiac poem:
The Aspiring Archivist stays up too late.
He lies on his bed in a heap.
He's got nothing to do but lots on his plate.
He's certainly lacking in sleep.
He could be doing so many things,
But instead he just sits here a types.
Waiting for comfort that gentle sleep brings,
While pointlessly passing the night.
Unless you do live quite far away,
You ought to be sleeping as well.
Soon I'll retire until comes the day,
So here is my night's farewell.
Good night.

What exactly are Shardbuddies? I've been mildly confused since first looking at people's signatures.
-
Shardbuddies are generally people who you interact with around the shard and its a form of friendship on the shard, basically. All you have to do is ask a person if they will be your shardbuddy and if they agree then you put them in your signature and they put you in their signature.

That’s what it is as far as I can gather.

I found a friend who read Mistborn and now I may subtly attempt to convert him. We'll see how it goes.
-
Just found out I can do this.
Hi. I've been on the site for a week now, so that's cool.
Uh... I'm doing pretty good, I guess. Thanks to everyone for being so friendly.
-
We're all glad to have you here!
-
*waves* 'lo. I don't think I've interacted with you before, so hey there!
Thanks for being part of our community. -
Ello! This is your friendly neighborhood cat, here with a warning to be careful of suspicious spiders. Smash them! In fact, you should smash ALL spiders! Thank you for listening to this special broadcast!
