  1. Tinker frowned. He still didn't understand, but dropped the matter. "The blanket got left back at our old camp," he said, noting her shiver. "I can activate more Sunlight spores if you're cold..." he trailed off. "Are you burning tin?"
  2. "What do you mean?"
  3. "Alright." Tinker settled back down. "Hopefully this place is sheltered enough." @Edema Rue @SmilingPanda19

  5. Tinker shifted out of the way and gave her a weird look. Then he scanned the suddenly smaller area. "Something just happened," he said, stepping towards the fallen rocks at the entrance, where a cold draft leaked through. "It feels cold." He turned to the pile of Sunlight spores on the ground, still radiating light and heat. "Maybe it's best if we stay here for shelter."
  6. I feel like posting an SU.

    It's been a minute.

    Uh...

    ...

My latest obsession is Japanese flutes, specifically the Shinobue flutes. This came about because of another obsession with a video game I've already talked too much about here. Suffice it to say flutes are an important part of worldbuilding in that game and there are a ton of really cool songs in the game that use flutes, and they're Japanese flutes, specifically shinobue flutes, and...yeah.

So I got a shinobue for Christmas and it's just been sitting on my dresser in it's little fabric case since then. I'll occasionally get it out and try to get some notes on it, but they're super airy and whistle-y and I eventually give up and put it back.

    Except there's been a resurgence.

I was doing some online research because I wondered if the flute I had was best suited for playing the song from the video game OST that I wanted to play. And the answer is yes, with an asterisk. See, the song is a duet, played by two characters who both have flutes, but they're different flutes. One is longer and lower.

So after some stumbling I learned that shinobue flutes come in different keys, like band instruments, called "choshi". And after some more digging I learned that the flute I have is an 8-hon choshi shinobue, tuned to a concert C major scale. And luckily, one of the two flutes in the game is basically just an 8-hon choshi shinobue.

Each key is given a different number, from 1, the lowest and longest, to 12, the highest and shortest. For example, the other flute in the duet, which is lower, is a 3-hon choshi, tuned to a concert G major. And so I want a 3-hon choshi now, except the internet doesn't know what I'm asking when I look for one and the few I can find are super expensive. So we'll deal with that later.

A funny moment came when I was browsing through a Youtube channel I found that had a bunch of tutorial videos. The lady in the video mentioned that an 8-hon choshi was the best for beginners, which is good, because that's what I have. However, when she mentioned the choshi, she pointed the front of her flute at the camera and tapped it. And then it hit me.

The front of my flute has always had this little very simple Japanese character on it. I never knew what it was. I just assumed it was a little stylized thing or some kind of signature or manufacturing symbol or something. However, once I saw her point to the front of her flute referencing choshi, I, on a hunch, looked up the Japanese character for 8.

And it was the character on the front of my flute.

So I kind of felt silly, because my flute had been telling me from day one that it was an 8-hon choshi flute, and I'd spent several minutes searching amazon looking for the exact flute I had to check what key it was in.

So that gave me a laugh.

Hopefully this sudden surge of interest will help me start studying those tutorial videos a lot closer and build up the skills necessary to actually play the piece I want to. I'm learning that I'm bad at diaphragmatic breathing, at least when it comes to flutes. So I still have lots of basics to work on.

    ...

I don't know where I was going with this. It's just been a while since I've done one of these.

Hopefully this isn't one of those SU's that everyone skims because it's too long and then doesn't comment on and I feel lonely.

      My mom has a flute!

How to play it escapes me, but I love songs from Japanese media that are played on the flute, because it’s always so good

I've got a Native American flute in my closet. Maybe I should get it out again...

  7. "You've felt the same thing," he said, softly. "Don't let them control you, Marewill. They've done that enough. Don't lose who you are to them, even if you lose your life to them."
  8. He sighed and stared at the ceiling of the cave. "They lied to the world when they made these games, you know," he said eventually. "They said that every 'tribute' would volunteer of their own accord. That it was a way to remember the old days, a way to bring people glory. "They were lying through their teeth. This was never about choice. Yes, each and every one of us chose to join these games, but the question is why? Because the people in the Capitol, in the Center of the nation, have removed choice from our lives. The people that joined this game are oppressed, desperate. No happy person is going to join these games, risk certain death for a fading chance at glory. The only people crazy enough to join are those who want to change their lives, and are willing to die trying, because in the end maybe death isn't so bad compared to the hell they've put us in. "I've spent so long in poverty...shivering...starving...we've manage to scrape together a life out there, my family, my town. We use the spores to survive. But it isn't stable. The first major disaster will be enough to wipe us out. And yet, despite constant pleas to the Capitol, we receive no aid. "So yes, I did join these games. But not out of personal choice. Just because it was the only choice the Capitol offered to my struggling people." He turned and met her eyes. "I've spent my whole life under their whims, suffering because of their greed and negligence. I'm likely in the last days, last moments of that life. And I'm not going to spend those last moments dancing to their whims. If I do win this, it will be by my rules. Not theirs. I'll defend myself if attacked, and I'll use lethal force if I'm attacked lethally. But I'm not going to go hunt people. And I'm not going to turn the last days of my life into a lie for the entertainment of the men and women who make my family suffer."
  9. Tinker closed his eyes. "Okay then." He didn't say anything more.
  10. "No," he said. "Hold onto them." He hesitated. "So...it wasn't you that caused those cannon blasts earlier?"
  11. "Do you still have that vial of Crimson spores I gave you?"
  12. "That's true." He settled into a corner of the cave and started looking over his spore inventory again.
  13. "Well," Tinker said. "That just happened." He rummaged in his bag for some Sunlight spores, distinguished by the marks he'd carved into the corks of the vials. He crouched down and poured a small pile onto the floor of the cave, then spit on them, causing them to activate. Their warm glow lit up the small cave. "I can probably use Verdant to get us out," he said, looking at the rocks covering the entrance, now illuminated by the golden light. "But I don't know if it's the best idea to head back out there, with the fire."
  14. "I'm coming," Tinker said, trying to avoid tripping on the uneven ground. "You don't have to pull me..." He ran with Marewill to the cave, diving inside it's safety.
  15. Tinker swung his arm as hard as he could, pulling Marewill by her hand to the side. Then he shoved her out of the way of the tree. He grabbed a Verdant grenade and put the fuse in his mouth, coating it in saliva. He threw it at the tree as the fuse was soaked through, activating the spores. Vines burst forth, wrapping around the tree and slowing it's fall. Tinker dashed towards the side, where he'd shoved Marewill. @SmilingPanda19 @J. Magi @Unintelligenius
  16. "Oh." Tinker sighed. "You didn't have to sneak up on us..."
  17. "Flemr. I usually go by Tinker, though." Tinker eyed it warily.
  18. Tinker heard the two cannon blasts pierce the still air, punctuated by a sense of dread. I hope one of those wasn't Marewill. Or...someone killed by Marewill. Don't know if I could handle either of those now. He eyed Sharp awkwardly. Do I say something? Do I just sit here? If I did run off, how bad would that be for me? @J. Magi [I forgot who else is all here and didn't walk off at some point]
  19. It's great writing, and a great message. ...I'm just a little confused why you thought to ping me...
  20. Tinker nodded. "Good luck." He tried to hide his discomfort.
  21. "I guess," Tinker responded. "Not much else to do." Despite this, Tinker was seriously considering leaving. Striking out alone. Of the tributes in the group, he only trusted Marewill; and even that was a very strenuous trust. He'd only known her for a day. And if Émeric was plotting with her, too... Still. He felt some measure of obligation towards her. A protectiveness. Seeing her interact with her siblings...She'd lost a lot. Then again, staying around would only mean developing a friendship. Or more, if Émeric got what he wanted. And that only meant pain for her later on. Maybe it was best to just leave. Tinker stiffened, fell silent. A solemn look took over his face. Moon's above, I'm not cut out for this...
  22. Tinker shook his head. Like I didn't already know Verdant was edible. I'm the spore expert, after all. Suspicion flashed across Tinker's eyes, though he couldn't hear what Marewill said. He turned his gaze to his spore kit; specifically the small vials of pitch-black motes. I wonder how useful those will end up being...
