It's a little of both, to be honest. It's merging the shell into the ground while the true body buries itself underground for either protection or movement. It can be done seamlessly, of course, but that takes a little more time and focus to achieve. I'm assuming in Krh's state of panic he didn't have the prescience to execute such a flawless maneuver and instead just channeled a quick escape tunnel and filled it in behind him, hence figuring there was a little dirt involved. Think of it like this; Earth is like water to Earthshells. They can move through it as easily and naturally as a fish, but unless they have a few moments to properly plot their 'dive' it's still going to make a bit of a 'splash'. That help clear it up?
