[New WoB] Allomantic Bronze & the Listener Rhythms

The Iriali Long Trail? -
How would Awakening change the color of a coat? Or, rather, how would it change it from dark brown to light brown?

[New WoB] Allomantic Bronze & the Listener Rhythms
Argent replied to Aethenoth's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Huh, something ate my reply... @Yata, can you get us that WoB verbatim? Because I speculate that the rhythms are something either entirely Spiritual, or with a strong Spiritual aspect - both of which would make them Roshar-agnostic, as location is virtually irrelevant in the Spiritual Realm. -
I know with 100% certainty that we've had at least one WoB in the past (and I am pretty sure it's more than one) about how the spren wanted to imitate what the Honorblades did, which is why they default to the shape of a Blade when they "die." I don't have the time to find it, but I am absolutely certain. Which is why this recent WoB confuses me, it's not like Brandon has been coy with this information before...

That's a fair point, I was grasping for straws a little bit there.

I like the parallel between the spren getting locked in Shardblade form and the Plate getting locked in a permanent form, all due to the Recreance. It has elegance. But I don't think it could work like that - spren get to turn into Blades because the Nahel bond gives them a stronger Physical aspect; what the Radiants get out of the deal is a stronger Cognitive aspect, manifested in the ability to manipulate some Surges, some Investiture, as those things are more mutable in Shadesmar, it being "closer" to the Spiritual Realm, the source of things like that. I don't see why the Nahel bond would allow the Radiants to manifest things in the Physical Realm. Not unless those things originate in one of the others.

Sure, but I can't imagine why. Nothing suggests that kandra have any kind of enhanced control over Awakening, and even if they did nothing suggests that partial color drain is even possible. Nothing I can think of contradicts it outright, but it's kind of a Russel's teapot type of scenario.

I had to answer the same question some time ago on Reddit, and I feel no shame in plugging my response here (much like I didn't feel shame plugging my original response there).

I wouldn't have put much stock in this theory without Wayne's comment there at the end. The fact that a character not only notices the change in color, but also makes the reader aware of this change is good evidence. It could be a red - brown? - herring, but considering that most of us wouldn't have noticed the change without Wayne, a herring is probably unnecessary. But while I like the theory, I do have to wonder if Awakening / Breath storage is what is going on here. When Awakeners fuel their magic, they drain color fully - down to grey; they don't lighten the color as much as they take it away. Moreover, when an Awakener stores their Breath in an object, the object's color becomes more vibrant, it doesn't actually change. And a change from dark brown to tan is quite a significant change. All this being said, there is a factor I could maybe accept as evidence for Awakening - perception. Nalthians, or at least people who have lived in T'Telir, must be very used to the ways colors change when there is an Awakener nearby, or one has stored their Breath in an object. So from their perspective, they would be able to tell instantly whether VenDell's coat changes colors because of that. But people on Scadrial are not familiar with this kind of change at all, so what might look like a change in hue to a Nalthian, could be perceived as changed in color to Scadrian. I still think this is unlikely, but it's something I could accept. Still, I like the theory a lot. Unless someone beats me to it, I will ask Brandon about it next time I see him.

I didn't like it. This is likely because Brandon was not skilled enough to sell it to me, but it felt super forced. Plus the slight hints at romance between Kaladin and Shallan in Words of Radiance are too similar to what we see between Kenton and Khriss - the jabs, the banter, even the personalities of the characters (to an extent).

Yeah, non-metal spikes have been RAFO'd several times before.
-
Right - Drile tried to do it, but never finished the process. So we still don't know exactly how it looks and what happens.
-
I lot of us have been assuming it's Kalak, but it's not a very good assumption. It's largely based on him calling Shalash by her real name - Ash - which suggests familiarity, and then excluding the other male Heralds. I don't remember the exact reasons Kalak was decided to be the most likely candidate anymore.

I am eternally amazed by how shifty Brandon can get when answering questions.

We've never actually seen slatrification on page, have we? Because now I don't think it turns sand into water - I think it extracts water from the sand film. I can imagine a colony of microorganisms, hydrophobic on the outside, hydrophilic on the inside. Given how much and for how long the average mastrell can Sand Master for, I could see this being a viable way of replenishing one's water supply.

More Khriss, more Khriss, more Khriss, more Khriss, more Khriss, more Khriss!
-
Yeah, it definitely looks like they've changed the preview. It now seems restricted to the first chapter and some concept art only. There used to be a (relative) ton of pages with Khriss in them, and I can't find any of them now. You'll have to wait a couple of months

I am pretty sure time flows differently in Shadesmar, so that could explain the time differences. As for the jam and bread, it's possible that Soulcasting at a distance is imprecise and/or more difficult, and she didn't want to add extra difficulty on top of what was already a difficult Soulcasting for her. But honestly, we don't know enough about Soulcasting.

You have to go look at the Amazon preview and keep hitting the Surprise me! button. It will eventually take you to the introduction of the scene where the Lady Judge asks Ais to follow Kenton.

Personalized Word of Brandon: Worldhopper/Stormlight 3 Related
Argent replied to Darkarma's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Maybe they change. Maybe the shape of the Cognitive Realm affects how cognitive entities look and behave like - so a spren on Scadrial might be more... metallic in some way. -
You have pretty pictures, I will now stalk you!
-
I can't even, guys. The Cosmere epic is slooowly coming together and I just about lose it whenever one of the cogwheels turns even a little bit.

Yeah, I went to Michaels yesterday. Their frames were a little more expensive (2 16x24 for the tables, and 1 18x24 for the map ended up being about $44), but not dramatically so. I'll probably put the posters in tonight and spend the rest of my life trying to decide where to hang them...
-
Right, what connections are those? Or, rather, how could they have benefitted the Sand Masters?
-
The new White Sand graphic novel preview reminded me something I forgot to think about as I was reading the manuscript: when Drile tests for Sand Mastery one of the Sand Masters calls him "a profitable catch in more ways than one" in reference to Drile being the "son of Reenst Rile." What's this extra profit I am missing?
