  1. Think it says it somewhere in the book...
  2. Those are not the mathematical terms, just mine (well, the university's) words that make imagining what's going on easier.
  3. "Piece of the night's cloak" could be a metaphor, an expression to say "a piece of darkness." "Heart of a beetle" sounds much more literal to me - I had been assuming, perhaps wrongly so, that small animals have powerful hearts. In retrospect, it makes more sense for a large animal to have an overdeveloped cardiac muscle, but I keep thinking about how many species of insects can lift several times their body weight. So there, strength.
  4. Yeah, I was planning on including those. Avatars are easy, anyway, I added them mostly for completeness' sake - what I am really interested in are the bigger images.
  5. Twitter's recent profile page redesign reminded me of something I wanted to do a while back but kind of forgot about. Most, if not all, social media websites allow you to customize your profile with a theme, and I think it's about time we created some avatars, backgrounds, and banners to show some fandom pride. I am thinking we can use abstract images, drawings and paintings from books and covers, as well as quotes. Before we do that, however, it would be useful to figure out the ideal dimensions of the different sites' customization options. I'll start with Twitter because it's fresh in my mind and I don't have much time for research now, but I'd like to add the rest as well. Twitter Avatar: 400x400 px Header photo: 1500x500 px Facebook Avatar: (any square?) Timeline cover: ??? Tumblr Can we do anything less than a full theme?Google+ Avatar: (any square?) Cover photo: ??? 17S Forums Avatars Signature banners?
  6. Hmm, I would like to like this, but you'll need to update the location of Urithiru as per Moogle's suggestions. Would be really neat if it works though.
  7. 1145, Returned. I missed the upvotes after 1140, but if Kurk is confident about 1144 still being the cook, the 1145 has to be the cutoff.
  8. Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. 10 years ago I would've called Jordan the best fantasy author out there. I was calling Jordan the best fantasy author out there. Having read Brandon, this is no longer the case. It's how this stuff works - if you stand on the shoulders of giants, you are taller than those giants. Doesn't mean they are not tall. Means you are just taller.
  9. This just in, folks, the first official rendering of Glys.
  10. So, from the Waygate Foundation Livestream: In a way, this is good - we probably don't have to worry about vowels anymore, because (for example) Kholin and Khalin would be painted the same way. We've made some really solid progress with the consonants, but I have to wonder - can we solve it all?
  11. You also have to keep in mind, The Wheel of Time is kind of an old series - it's what pioneered the fantasy genre into the not-Tolkien era, and ultimately inspired authors like Brandon. So, yea, if you've read some more (good) modern fantasy, you will already be familiar with a lot of the elements WoT introduced some 20 years ago, so they will feel, well, stale. So yea, don't expect much originality unless this is pretty much your introduction into the genre.
  12. I am moving through the last few points (at 1140 now) of the waffle cook, I'll keep an eye on the transition point.
  13. His interlude suggests that he does. Or at least very strongly suspects.
  14. "Projection" is the mathematical term - if I've followed the conversation. I am thinking vectors, but it should apply to shapes as well. In the example below, we take an object in 2D space (the vector v2), and then project it onto all the 1D spaces (lines / dimensions) it spans. Now, in the case of project 2D objects onto (two) 1D spaces, anything you start with will end up turning into a boring couple of lines, one in each direction. If you start with a 3D object, however, you will need to project it onto three (not two) planes (not lines), and each projection is going to be a 2D shape (not a 1D line). So I think it checks out. You start with a Julia set in 4D, cut it and take a 3D slice from it (because that's how slices work), and then project that 3D slice onto a 2D plane, a flat surface - say, a sheet of paper used by mapmakers. It's damnation near impossible to find a good image of a 3D object and its 2D projections, but you can easily visualize it if you imagine any 3D object (for some reason I always think of a sphere), place it in a room (imagine just a corner, one with a floor and the two adjacent walls), and then throw the object really hard at each one of the walls so it gets completely flattened - those flat images are the different projects (which, for a sphere, are all circles; if you started with a cylinder, you should see two rectangles and a circle, and so on).
  15. Never seen 'em.
  16. I agree, I've believed, for a long time, that the fabrials from the era of the Silver Kingdoms worked differently from modern day ones. The fabrials Navani & co. create need a spren because they, more or less, duplicate and manipulate surges - but Radiants wouldn't need to do that, they had access to the surges directly.
  17. Two arguments against yours: Shardblade also changes shape and size over time. People can change shape over time - you might gain weight, lose weight, or even hit some weird growth spur. It makes sense for the Plate to adjust, even if it's just for your own body.
  18. It has to be that. How that works, that's another thing entirely, but it probably has to do with how much influence spren have across the realms. The Blade does blur when it passes through living flesh after all, so it doesn't cut with its physical aspect.
  19. Huh, looks like both of you thought I was talking about a non-Nahel spren. Which is not the case. I believe it's the Radiant's spren that is responsible for powering up / upgrading / whatevering their own Shardplate. But I also believe there has to be something before the spren can kick in, a normal or a not-quite-as-powerful suit of armor, let's say.
  20. I believe it was strongly implied that the guards are used not only for transportation, but also for lighteyes to use when they want to practice Shardblade dueling - they would put the guards on their Blades and duel safely without the need of Plate.
  21. On the contrary, I think Shardplate resists the cut of the Blades because of an augmenter fabrial or something that behaves similarly. I say this because Shardplate resists not only Shardblade, but all forms of damage. It's not "resistant to Shardblade," it's just "really really durable." That's exactly what I was wondering above. EDIT: Apparently I was wondering about this so hard, I forgot to write it down...
  22. Speaking of which - damnit, Kurk, just another 30 rep points and I'll pass you!
  23. I always thought it's an artifact from a time (and maybe a place) when the people of Roshar had hounds and other Earth-like animals. Shinnovar has at least a few different species of birds, horses are well-known (if not common) shell-less animals, and Words of Radiance has a scene where Adolin looks at a painting of what sounds like a lion. So either Roshar wasn't always as hostile to Earth-like flora and fauna (and then something changed, and the highstorms appeared / intensified, and life had to evolve differently) and its denizens kept some of the words and / or ideas across the threshold of time, or when Honor and Cultivation created humans*, they created them very similar to the humans on Yolen, which presumably had horses, and birds, and hounds - and so the language the Shards gave / created for them had words of those things as well. * Is it canon that they did?
  24. We believe Shardplate is similar to a fabrial - the truth is, we don't know anything about it. But it does look like the two types Shards don't come from the same source, not entirely at least.
  25. Nightblood is one of a kind only because Vasher is keeping the secret of its creation, well, secret. Considering how readily available Breath is on Nalthis, and how easy it is to acquire 1,000 if you are rich, Vasher could quickly and easily create a bunch of Awakened weapons, if he wished. So Nightblood's uniqueness is only by choice. Actually, now that I think about it, since Stormlight and Breath are similar enough to allow Returned to feed off them interchangeably, I find it possible that Shardplate is almost like the Rosharan equivalent of an Awakened object. It's not sentient by any measure, nor is it infused with a Command, but it is pretty heavily Invested, and it has a pretty strong presence in all three Realms (Physical is obvious, with Cognitive and Spiritual being responsible for the self-restoration and size/shape adjustment). Regardless, I am not going to explore that now. I still don't see why you believe that the Nahel spren are 100% responsible for the creation of each suit of Shardplate, as opposed to, say, 50% - providing its obviously magical properties, as well as fortifying it even more maybe.
