That's a fair point; a Feruchemist's biggest limitation compared to an Allomancer is that they can't use their powers all the time. Not if they want a sizable boost, anyway. There is actually a section in one of TLM's broadsheet saying that there was either a delivery service or a newspaper delivery service that used Steelrunners. . . I had a hard time believing that Brandon actually wrote that part, as a Steelrunner couldn't use their powers frequently for that kind of job if they wanted a decent boost. A Coinshot would be way, way better for that kind of task since they can use their powers far more reliably. Hmm, I'll have to give that some more thought. I'm on my mobile right now, which makes it a lot harder to make a comprehensive list.

Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
Trusk'our replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Oh yeah. A A-pewter/F-steel Twinborn would absolutely stomp a full Shardbearer as long as they had some prep time. And considering that they can siphon off extra speed from Burning pewter for Tapping later, it's almost like a lesser version of Compounding (and seeing as A-pewter seems to speed you up quite a bit, you could Store a LOT of speed). -
Thank you! I appreciate it

It is a pretty interesting thought. And it's totally possible, though there are more complications involved due to the nature of Bonding a sapient piece of Investiture to gain the powers rather than it being directly encoded into the Spiritweb of the Surgebinder:

Lol, often me as well (such as right now, actually) Thanks! I appreciate the appreciation!

Thanks! Yeah, it wouldn't be an easy task, particularly if you want to do as little harm as possible. But if you could target only cancerous cells, perhaps it would be a viable option when Unsealed Goldminds and other forms of Invested healing fail due to the self-perception of the patient. Sorry, I didn't mean corrupt like as in the sense of Cosmere corruption but corrupt as in your cellular machinery is failing and breaking in ways that cause it to act in direct competition with the rest of the body. Its natural purpose has been corrupted, but only due to the flaws of biology. I also may have miscommunicated here; what I meant to say is, what if you were to take an Invested Hemalurgic spike and use it to rewrite the spiritual code of the tumor to act in a beneficial way instead of a parasitic way (I apologize for this error on my part. I was trying to type it up on my mobile account at the time)? Yeah, that's one of the issues that can occur with some types of cancer; it can sometimes hitchhike in your bloodstream and can spread and pop up everywhere in your body. That would certainly make it harder to get rid of, but I wonder, if Hemalurgic excision can target a general "cancerous" cell type, maybe it could still purge those cells from your body even after they spread. It probably depends on the specific person's self-perception and how they view the cancer, as with most forms of Cosmere healing. Hence the reason Hemalugic excision may prove useful in this case; if it counts as natural and can't be healed through traditional forms of Invested healing, this is a way to force the body to function as you wish. Edit: I suppose that it's also worth mentioning. . . Warbreaker spoilers;

While you cannot Store Feruchemical attributes while sleeping through conventional methods (with the exception of Feruchemical bronze), you can Store attributes with the Malwish medallions. You could also choose to Store attributes right before sleeping (since you're not going to be using those attributes at that time anyway), as most people are technically still awake after laying down to sleep anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, which is time you could spend Storing a significant fraction of your strength, physical speed, mental speed, Fortune, health, weight, senses, or determination.

We know that infections aren't caused when a Hemalurgic spike is implanted in the body- the Investiture seems to act as a kind of antiseptic. Does this mean that a Hemalurgist would be immune to cancer forming around the site of a spike as well? Or, could a person spike out the Spiritweb of a tumor growing in someone to completely destroy it? And what if you implanted a spike in a tumor? Would it have a different spiritual makeup due to its corrupt nature? Could spiking Investiture into a tumor make it turn into a separate being, perhaps more symbiotic in nature than parasitic?
-
Alright, what if you managed to fill the spikes with Preservation's Investiture instead, such as if you were to use natural Compounding (yes, if you could do that you'd either be a narual Fullborn or at least have access to Unkeyed Metalminds from Compounders, but for the sake of discussion let's just say that you do). Do you think that Preservation's Intent would help shore up those cracks? Okay, what about if you filled the spike with more Hemalurgic Investiture? If you found a way to strip Identity from another and spiked 100 people, do you think that would help prevent control through the Flaw?
-
Possibly, but it seems to be difficult to get exactly the same effects of an eye spike when just Burning iron/steel; those give you lines to utilize, yes, but it doesn't usually let you outline the entire world. I know that there's that WoB that says that anyone can do it potentially, but we've only see it happen to the extent of a Steel Inquisitor without the eye spike(s) once, and that was with the raw power of the Band of Mourning. That makes me hesitant to believe that anyone would be able to do it, just that's it's a technical "you can technically do it" and not a "you would actually do it realistically".

If you could actually affect their self, such as when pulled into a vision with them- I think you could possibly do that, though I'm sure it would be a lot harder it seems on paper. You might be able to de-Ascend someone from Shardhood too, which would be interesting to see. I think the WoB is mostly talking about implanting a spike in a Shardic Vessel, not about using them as a Donor. Plus, the Vessel's Spiritweb is supposed to be surprisingly low in Investiture, so spiking something off seems like a reasonable gambit in comparison.
-
As you all know, Hemalurgic spikes create cracks in the Spiritweb, making it easier for outside sources of Investiture to get in and influence things as they wish, potentially even allowing the Hemalurgist to be outright mind controlled. So, here's yet another idea on how a Hemalurgist could resist the Flaw; Marsh decides to confront a Mistborn serial killer who's popped up in Elendel, as Marsh is a good guy and probably isn't okay with someone like that just going about wantonly and murdering others. The Mistborn uses a duralumin augmented blast of Emotional Allomancy in an attempt to control Marsh. Due to Marsh's mental fortitude, he manages to break the Mistborn's hold on his mind and he escapes. Marsh later Compounds and stuffs his spikes to the brim with Investiture, each one holding a comparable amount to the Bands of Mourning. Marsh confronts the Mistborn again and the Mistborn again chooses to use a duralumin augmented blast of Emotional Allomancy in an attempt to mind control Marsh. So, would the added Feruchemical Investiture of Marsh's spikes make him more tolerant toward the Mistborn's influence, since Investiture resists Investiture? Investiture does resist Investiture, after all.

Questions about Soulcasters... okay... and Kandra
Trusk'our replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Nice. It's always fun to find another one of those Okay, so, yes, as far as we know a Soulcasting requires that the object retains its original shape- heck, even wood turned metal retains its grain-, though the material its made out of changes. When changing air to a solid, you usually need some kind of barrier to give it shape (such as the poles with cloth on them that traditional Soulcasters use to make stone buildings for the Alethi war camps), but as we see Jasnah shaping stairs out of thin air in OB, this is optional, likely needing to do with the perception of the Soulcaster. @Treamayne raises a good point; I think it would be difficult to just choose to Soulcast a portion of your own self, as the default would be to target all of yourself (resulting in guaranteed death for most- probably all- changes). . . though I suppose Jasnah did selectively Soulcast Shallan's blood in tWoK, so with practice and correct targeting it should be doable. I'd say an easier option for the Kandra would be to separate the body part they wish to Soulcast from the rest of them (mostly just the nerves and blood vessels, though an aluminum shell could still cover them) so they don't have to deal with that issue as much. Overall, I'd say this could be a pretty powerful synergy between Soulcasting and Kandra. Good idea @Tamriel Wolfsbaine! -
I wonder if he just chills out in places that people who aren't a part of his organization won't see him. That, my friend, would be a very limiting existence. Dadgum it, you're right, the answer always is, and always should be MORE SPIKES! But in all seriousness, if a Hemalurgist's portfolio of powers is limited to three spikes- five if they're willing to open themselves up to Shardic influence and a needing a Linchpin spike- requiring a specific power seems limiting, even if it's a pretty good power. Other solutions should be considered in addition to just adding on certain powers.

Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
Trusk'our replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion

Well, that's how it's been theorized to work, but we don't know for certain yet. It would make the most sense though, so most people on the Shard believe that's how it works.

Another Kandra Thought... Thanks Hollywood
Trusk'our replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Sorry you got sick friend I do love that movie though! Honestly, the battle suits they wore were pretty neat, one of my favorite parts of the film really. I'm flattered Well, I'd say the Fused version of the Growth Surge is going to be your best bet to make skeletal protrusions on the fly, but it seems that's not your real goal here. Awakened ropes, as you suggest, would be best for tentacles, as they provide a flexible yet strong structure. Lots of strength, actually, so it you want a tentacle that can slam someone across the room, using those as a base for your Kandra is probably your best bet. You could also have aluminum blades/spikes on the tips if you want. If you specifically want spikes that shoot out, crimson Aethers seem to have that as their whole deal, so maybe a F-Bendalloy crimson Aetherbound or Sporeater would do the trick. . . or maybe if the Kandra just kept crimson Aether spores in capsules in their body, releasing drops of water on them as needed, they could achieve a very similar result, especially if they had accompanying bits of steel/iron in their flesh to direct the spike's growth as desired. The Kandra would probably have to ditch the spikes afterward, but they could hold a lot of spores in reserve and dole them out as needed, so I wouldn't think that would be an issue. Hope this helps!- 1 reply

Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
Trusk'our replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah, I suppose that's true; just because you can learn computer programming doesn't mean you will, especially when you probably live in a magical city that provides most of what you need. Also, Elantrians do receive a natural enhancement to speed, strength, and intelligence. The Prologue tells us this. Agreed; Mistborn are a lot less Invested overall, but their abilities are dangerous and versatile. Pewter, iron, steel, duralumin, and Bendalloy would go a long way in a fight, even against a full Shardbearer. I'd still give the edge to a Shardbearer in a straight up fight though, as Plate is tough, and Shardblades will give the Shardbearer a sizable advantage in almost any melee encounter. Eh, Full Feruchemists aren't very Investiture rich, not unless their Compounding. However, like Mistborn, their powers are quite dangerous with enough preparation; strength, weight, health, and most importantly, physical speed, are going to be their main weapons, and with enough Stored ahead of time I could defiantly see a Feruchemist beating a Shardbearer, though I think they'd have to Store enough attributes to pull a victory that I doubt they'd win by default (except maybe when counting physical speed. That's just busted in general, and is their real key to any victory against a Shardbearer). Yup Hmmm, I don't think that this is entirely accurate; Vasher uses Awakened clothing and ropes to increase his strength dramatically, which means you can get a lot of physical strength as an Awakener, albeit in a less conventional way. Additionally, even if you don't have enough Breath to Awaken metal, you can still place stationary Breaths in it, which should at the very least make it resistant to Shardblades. A creative Awakener could use this to their advantage in a fight. Sand Masters have easily replenishable sand tentacles that can stab through people. Despite their relatively low amount of Investiture, I'd think that their powerset would be one of the best to kill Shardbears. Just grapple them, pin them down, and stab through the eye slit or wriggle sand through any cracks in the armor to crush/stab them to death. Or, barring that, throw big rocks at them with your sand ribbons till they die and evade their attempts to get close by using ribbons to escape. -
Thanks for the link! Hmmm, actually, now that I think of it, didn't Wax sense a Steel line in TLM from the one newspaper lady with a gun aimed at his back? Seems like a useful ability, even if you couldn't get full vision. Makes sense to me. My biggest concern with someone (like Kelsier) deciding to use an eye spike to gain the benefits of it would be it drawing lots of unwanted attention; You can't exactly walk around unnoticed and unbothered with a railroad spike sticking from your eye. An eyepatch would do wonders for its concealment. Thanks for the quotes @alder24 ; I don't have any of the books on me right now, so I appreciate your work.

Welcome to the Shard! Nice to see another Mistborn fan! Allomantic pewter plus Feruchemical steel; you can Store the excess speed from pewter to increase your total Feruchemical power, plus when you Tap physical speed you increase the speed at which you Burn your Allomantic metals. That means you can effectively super Flare your pewter to gain tons of strength, durability, dexterity, and you get more speed on top of it. Just be sure to consume lots of extra pewter, cause you're goanna go through it fast via this method. Allomantic bronze plus Feruchemcial tin; you can Store your Bronzesense in your Tinmind, allowing you to superpower your Seeking abilities. Allomantic electrum plus Feruchemical nicrosil; if F-nicrosil does in fact allow you to decrease your Allomantic powers for a time and later let you Tap to increase their strength, you should be able to more directly access the SR (Spiritual Realm) and see a more expansive vision of the future than normal, kind of like if you were to Burn Atium and duralumin together. Since Storing an attribute Feruchemically doesn't change the effects of the attribute (like if you were to Store wakefulness from caffeine, it wouldn't be regular wakefulness) and you can Store the strength boost provided by Allomantic pewter, a pewter Compounder should be able to Store and Tap a magical boost to muscles strength rather than needing to Store and Tap actual muscle mass, which greatly lessens the cap they have on their total strength, and their reduction in dexterity would be nonexistent.

How useful would the Steelsight/Ironsight of a Steel Inquisitor actually be? Yes, you can see in the dark and it's harder to be blinded (from pocketsand and flashbangs, but are there any other ideas for it's use? Also, do you think an Inquisitor or other Hemalurgist could wear an eyepatch to conceal their eye spike, but learn to ignore the cloth's presence and see through it? Otherwise, having an eye spike just feels too much like a give away to literally everyone around you.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I really liked Mistborn era 1, and I felt that it laid a good foundation for era 2, but I honestly loved reading era 2 even more. Stormlight is another really good series, and there are different qualities about it that I like, but at the end of the day I'd usually rather read a Mistborn era 2 book than a Stormlight book.
-
? I am confused as to what you mean. Could you please elaborate?
-
Hmmm, in that case, Allomantic pewter's speed boost may be closer in percentage to it's strength boost (100% extra Burning normally, 200% extra when Flaring). That seems really powerful though. I wonder if Brandon will nerf it a bit to help keep it from being OP or if it just won't be considered too much. Thanks for re-reading it by the way!
