Something triggers the Shaod. What that something is, we don’t really know, but it’s not 100% random. There’s a mechanism to it.

Electrochemistry and implications[Discuss]
Ashbringer replied to Oltux72's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I was under the impression the Ghostbloods were performing their electrolysis for creating aluminum on Scadrial. They have cars and electricity now, they're most of the way through the Industrial Revolution. The Ghostbloods should have enough presence to get a factory on Scadrial able to produce it, and they definitely can have enough control to keep it a secret, especially if the Set can pull off similar things. Where that method was originally developed, that's interesting. Sazed could have told Kelsier directly, or it could have come from Autonomy's planet (presumably Taldain) or another. Taldain is supposedly closed, but that doesn't seem to be perfect as a few worldhoppers have shown up from there. We also haven't seen other planets for a while, mostly Sel and Nalthis, that could have advanced to that point. Scadrial might be the second most advanced planet industrially, but the others might not be too far behind. -
I don't think we've seen aluminum do anything to static Investiture, except Allomantic aluminum. But silver kills static spores. There is a physical change there, so it's not as simple as severing a Cognitive Connection... although that could be a result of the spores losing Connection to the moon aethers / True aethers. Sort of a side note - are there guesses as to why salt affects the spores? Is that assumed to just be a biological response as opposed to a Spiritual/Invested one?

True, but assuming equal skill level I wonder how many metals that extra strength helps in for pure combat. Pewter and Steel definitely; Iron, Bendalloy, Cadmium, and Electrum probably, Copper and Bronze for my specific strategy... the rest? I don't even know what extra strength in Chromium or Duralumin would do, and some are just not helpful. I think I also made the assumption that stronger Allomancy wouldn't result in stronger Compounding, which may be faulty. But Compounding is near-limitless either way, and in a fight I'd put a Fullborn who can't use their Allomantic abilities (but can Compound) over a Mistborn. Well, besides that the Mistborn could just fly away, but that doesn't win the fight on its own. I meant more that a Fullborn could set up their own bendalloy bubble to counter the bendalloy-inside-cadmium trick, once they figured it out. The rest I think I got. I am very interested to see where F-Bendalloy goes in the world of Lifts and Luhel bonds I'm also wondering if I should scrap something to get Shardplate, which would probably be downgrading to a regular Mistborn. But then Lerasium can break my coppercloud most likely. -

Something weird happened with Nightblood, specifically. Something we don’t exactly know. But I imagine you’d get something similar to Azure’s blade and not Nightblood. Also, small side note that the Fullborn can burn Bendalloy too. That’s the issue with it, Fullborn vs Fullborn kinda cancels out, with Lerasium vs Normal being a relatively small edge compared to Compounding. Hence my Floor Dahkor -
"If Realizing works like Soulcasting, it could do something like this. I had to pull a few tricks to get feeling back as well. But Realizing... I've never heard that term before," Cassie said, curious. It was fairly obvious it was an ability connected to Balance the Realizer, but if he was simply an Epic, it would likely be unique. Which meant if it started going wrong... "I'm... finding I don't need much at the moment. Business is doing well." She did have a few ideas - another indestructible dress would prove quite handy - but that seemed a bit too thoughtless for his situation. So Cassie went for another idea. "If you try and Realize something without thinking, specifically, does anything happen? Most magics need Intent, but for Soulcasting, sometimes you can get away with a little less," she said, pulling out a small slug of iron. She held it in her Soulcaster and willed the change to happen, putting all her focus on the Transformation and none on the end. The result was a slug of metal, the same color and alloy as her skin. Cassie rolled it around her palm a few times. "If the deForgery caused this, maybe the issue isn't with the power at all." @EmulatonStromenkiin

I think there’s a WoB that Sleepless can (and in the past, maybe even did) have Nahel bonds. Something implied from the back cover summaries. My Floor-Fused is lacking in the living shardplate department, but I’m not entirely sure what I’d change. Could maybe drop Lerasium Mistborn for just normal Mistborn, but it makes a good edge for things. Seems everyone’s a Fullborn these days -
White Sand almost certainly follows a Luhel Bond. I've got a suspicion that Aviar may as well, either with the parasites->Aviar or Aviar->human. It could very well be that the sand is bone spores - it would fit the description and why they're so rare. But "bone" spores is a strange name for it in that case.

Aw, no Honorblades so I can't do Faleast. Oh well. He's got a few things that wouldn't make the cut anyway. Siah Aimian (5), Lerasium Mistborn (305), Feruchemist (497), A-Copper Spike (509), Deepest One Fused (529), 3th Oath Elsecaller (729), Crimson/Spike Aether Bond (753), Primer Cube (758), Dahkor (798), Dahkor Nullification (998), First Heightening (999). You guys have fun, I'm a Fused in the floor. Also the floor is fire. A-Copper spike is to beat out any Bronze or other lifesense that isn't TLR-level. Pop out of the ground or out of Shadesmar, and Dahkor Fullborn can be the offensives. Probably not the best possible especially when Bondsmith-Dawnshard is around, but very hard to kill. -
We only have a WoB that it could be a danger to spren (and that it is more easily turned into a danger than aluminum). That could mean through a Chain, or though its nature, or something else entirely.

I believe the TLM Ars Arcanum suggested Ironeyes' existence was becoming known across other, non-Scadrial planets. First of the Sun would be an odd one for it to be, but it's possible for Lumar. Also by the time of Sixth of the Dusk, I believe most people arriving on FotS are actually travelling through space FTL and not worldhopping. Although iirc, we don't know where the Ones Above are, and Rosharans might be more likely than Scadrians. Or when Tress actually fits in the timeline.

Other potential members of the Ghostbloods?
Ashbringer replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think we know Codenames is Kaise from Elantris. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if at least Adien is a Ghostblood too, as she seemed to reference him as still alive; the rest of the family could have joined as well. I think Kelsier and Kiin would get along. But we also know that they'll (the family, not necessarily the GBs) will be involved in the Elantris Sequel. Other than that... perhaps Vivenna. Someone from Nalthis seems likely, and that's probably not Vasher as cool as that would be. Although maybe Yesteel could. Don't think we'll get anyone else from Roshar unless Shallan has a major turnabout or Felt gets involved, although we do know one of the Sleepless has aligned with them. It does seem like their focus is on Sel at the moment. Multiple confirmed members are from there, and they've got several different seons. But a good amount of the protagonists of other planets have sequels we need to get to. -
I think it’s implied the Threnodite silver chain is more than just a chain made out of silver. Whether that’s just Threnodite silver vs Rosharan silver… maybe? But Roshar has Soulcasters, they’d be able to create a purer silver than pretty much anywhere else. Unless you can’t Soulcast silver, but you can do aluminum so that would be surprising. It’s abilities are probably interrelated, but I doubt it’s a primary ability of silver on its own.
-
Nightblood’s sheath is aluminum. The two metals just look similar. The silver chain also showed up in the hands (maybe not literally) of a spren in the Cognitive realm, so maybe it’s just different somehow.
-
Hoid also mentions vending machines. I don’t think that narrows it down at all, but it’s kinda cool.
-
I wonder if the Lord Ruler would have known. He knew enough about Hemalurgy to create the Inquisitors, he might have.
-
Malatium is atium and gold, not silver. Although electrum has silver in it. It does seem like silver can damage Cognitive things, but why that would affect the spores I don’t quite get. Maybe it severs their bond to the moon large aethers? Would be interesting to see how silver reacts to the white sand. Also, I didn’t notice any mention of the silver on ships needing to be replaced over time, which is interesting. Silver used for shades does.

Cassandra nodded. It wasn't spreading on its own, which was good. But other than that, this was alien to her. "The Forgery shouldn't have had a large effect on you, unless you both arrived earlier than I thought," she said. "As far as I know, aside from the change I made myself-" again, gesturing at her bronze skin "-I am the same. Although perhaps my perception is faulty." She flexed an arm. "Does it still function? And were you using your abilities at the time, or since? The Forgery is a cosmere art, and it could form strange interactions with more exotic Spiritwebs. Regardless... I think this is beyond my knowledge. The Einladung or the Scholar's Guild may be better places to look." Cassie frowned. It was so similar. Certainly some principles had to be conserved. Soulcasting savantism was an issue of a soul transforming, or becoming distant. Epics had wounds sometimes, she knew, but could the deForgery really knock someone's soul loose? @EmulatonStromenkiin

People you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley
Ashbringer replied to Voidus's topic in The Alleyverse
If there was a party in the Alleys, Kalten didn't know where it was. And that was fine by him. The young man tugged at his collar, more out of habit than anything else, and admired his new office. It was fairly small, and still bore a faint scorch mark on one far corner where his predecessor had managed to remove themselves from existence. He thought he'd been told it would be cleaned, but perhaps an electrified spiking left a mess beyond the average Investiture, or perhaps it was just a reminder. In the center sat a large desk with a Stormlight wick for lighting and fabrials, a fairly simple (but filled) inbox and outbox, and a few bottles of wine. Well, most of them were wine. A few his favorite whiskeys. Then there was that one which... he'd deal with later. He'd need to get a better storage system, for the paper and the alcohol. That wasn't really the extent of the office, Kalten knew. It was its own Alley, one that could largely be expanded and molded to his liking, as much as any Alley could. But that needed Alleymatics, and his first venture at Department head couldn't very well be requesting Alleymatics send someone over for renovations. Department Head of Public Relations of the Dark Alley. Most people would say it didn't feel real. You didn't get any higher than that, not without working against some of the oldest beings the universe had ever known. And that wasn't liable to be tried again. This was the top of the top of the best of the best. With nothing to do but fall. For Kalten, it was very real. He locked his office door and sealed the Alley, then sat at his desk, splaying his watch over the Storm-lit bar. He wasn't burning copper, so it should let him know if anyone overly angry was outside. First on the pile, a man who claimed a shadowed cat had stolen the inside of one of his ears. Kalten gave that a look for about five seconds before marking it for a subtle memory alteration, and a request for R&D to look into shadowed cat creations. Either they did make it and it got loose, or they soon would, but it would be better to know whether this individual had been a Hemalurgy victim or was just off his rocker. Kalten knew what was happening. He knew that despite all his former-coworkers-turned-subordinates' exultations of his knowledge, that he was chosen to lead their Department because they thought he would maybe survive a few meetings with the other Heads. But he had survived. And here he was, with the Vigil going on in the Alleycity. So many of the Department Heads were out and about, celebrating their success. And Kalten was here, de jure one of the most powerful people still in the Alleys. Possibly the most powerful, if Mac was out and about. He briefly thought of seeing where that power could go. Then he reached into his desk, grabbing a small sliver of copper, pricking his finger and then swallowing the piece, extracting and burning that thought away. In the future he could see where that power could go. For now, hopefully it would be enough power to work for ten minutes before somebody bothered him. -
Five minutes? Byron shuddered slightly, which ended up flexing one of his arms to the left. He knew Perses hadn't meant a literal second, but five minutes... that was forever. To him, it could literally be forever, the time he took to eat a stolen piece of chouta before going back for fruit four days later. He'd gone longer without cadmium, sure. At the Hospital he made it about half an hour. But he'd been Leeched then, and had to reach into his coat pocket, pull out a vial, uncork it, and drink it. Harder than it seemed when one's fingers didn't listen to one's brain. But now, though, Byron had plenty of cadmium. All he needed to do was will it to turn on. And it very much wanted to. Fortunately he had been burning a big bubble, and their surroundings had been static anyway. But Byron still felt it. There was no inside. Everything was there, outside, moving at the same time-frame as he was. Nothing was moving, nothing he was looking at, but he was still straining every sense of himself, trying to hear the sped-up buzz of distant sounds that were far too drawn out. Some part of Byron knew this didn't make too much sense. Half the time his bubble was less than ten percent dilation, and when he was used to sensing anywhere from ten to a thousand percent, what difference did none make. But even if ten minus zero is ten, the magnitude of that difference can never be compared. And when that part asked the rest of him, and found the answer to be all of it. He made it about eighty seconds before burning cadmium again. A smaller bubble this time, just holding him, just for a few hyper-dilated seconds until Persus spoke again and he put it back to it's "normal", large, ten-percent-size. "You find anything?" he asked, trying to control his breathing a little more. But he could feel that feeling, that something was outside. Watching. Seems like something found them. Byron drew his daggers. This, at least, he had some idea how to deal with.

Byron vaguely noted Willow and Vivi stepping away. His bubble was big enough at this moment that the gesture was just symbolic, but the intent was clear, and nobody said anything in favor. So he just nodded morosely and kept the time the same, wincing slightly as Cobalt cursed the early arrival of the change. He wasn't condensing time that much, so it was probably early, but he certainly wasn't helping. But the change itself was a wonder. Byron watched for a few seconds, then turned towards the windows. The outside seemed mostly the same. And the changing halls brought up some bad memories. Memories of that adventure though an Alleyway, surviving the way he always had, by being small and burning cadmium and hoping nothing noticed he was still alive. Something was watching him. Byron resisted the urge to turn around. Speed wasn't on his side here, not with whatever-was-there having the jump. So just... let it pass. He hadn't asked about sensing these things without sight. Maybe Perses had and he hadn't noticed. But his sense was somewhat harder to predict. Byron half-closed his eyes, just looking at the floor below, and felt for pulses. He'd always been able to feel when something hit the edge of his bubble, know when to counteract it. But he could also feel the walls, the floor, slightly different from before but still there. And the empty space where that feeling was coming from. If it got too close, he'd know. And then it would be on their speed. Unless it was like Sanax. In which case he could doom them all. ”Byron, can you kill your cadmium for a second? It won’t be long.” Byron opened his eyes, looking at the wall again. That was Perses. Well, he would have a better way of sensing than he would. Byron checked the edges once more, then stopped burning cadmium. It took longer than he remembered. A second or two. That was... forever. But the time dilation disappeared, the feeling of walls vanished, and the world became fast. Byron snapped his head to look at Perses, trying to focus on him and ignore the strain his neck and body was imposing on itself, working overtime to counteract a force that wasn't there anymore. He didn't dare move his legs. Not here, not now. "Alright let me know when you're done," he said, then tensed. @Koloss17

Cassie gave a smile. "I'll still take it, Demaren. I move smoothly in this form, just not very... fast. And I'd hate for your work to have gone to waste." She then turned slightly toward the other individual. Balance the Realizer. Either an Epic or a Returned, based on that name, and likely the former. The man moved his covering cloak, showing lines of blue that... were replacing his skin. Nearly half of it, from the look of it. Well, anyone else could say they didn't see that every day. "Interesting. One moment," Cassie said, then burned iron. The familiar blue lines shot out from the world around her, focusing more on the rebar of the building behind the pair. They were a different color, Balance's lines. Made sense. Allomancy could do a lot, but the sight granted by steel and iron was limited to vision almost entirely. "I don't know much about Epics, but I know some about Change. Is this a new phenomenon, or has it been this way for a while? Has it spread?" This could be tricky. Other magic systems tended to mimic each other, but Epic abilities usually didn't follow that rule. Like the Old Magic. Which meant her experience would only get her so far. And she couldn't very well recommend her own method. @EmulatonStromenkiin

Cassandra had made a few changes to the Emporium in the past few days. Not a lot, as she was the same old Cassandra - even if this new body better fit "Cassandra" rather than her nickname. But Cassie was still nice from time to time. The biggest change was a noticeable increase in gemstones in the main room. Most were simply lights, turned on instead of the old electrical ones. Those were still installed, of course, but Stormlight felt right. It might become an issue if any Surgebinders wanted a better deal, but the Light also helped her Soulcasting, and it wasn't like it would be in short supply. A few other changes were around - a slightly better chair for Poller, for one, he was still trying to understand why she'd Changed herself. Blast, she needed to really talk to him about it all. NullBlade too. She couldn't really see anything in him, but Cassie still felt bad she'd seemingly solved all her problems with a magic trick while he went through an entire Forgery seemingly the same. The other change was an Alerter at the front door. It was buzzing. Cassandra stood up from her smithy in the back of the store, methodically folding a few small amethysts into her forearm. She could finish that part later. For now, there were customers. So she walked toward the empty desk, paused a moment, then went and opened the door. There stood Technotic and... she wasn't certain, but that was the individual who'd been in his store before she arrived, yes? "Hello, Technotic," she said, giving him a slight grin. "This is a store, you know. You can just come through the front door. Although I'd prefer mine remain in one piece," she added, turning to the other figure. "And you are?" A thought struck her. "And apologies for the..." she paused, then gestured vaguely at her own now-metallic features, "changes. It was a drastic measure, but I'd say it worked out quite well, no?" @EmulatonStromenkiin @mathiau

PSA - The State of the Sanderson 2022 is up
Ashbringer replied to Ixthos's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Pretty sure the ketek structure lets you stuff an "and" or similar in places to let it flow better. (In addition to WoK, people usually say OB and not just O )
