  1. Radiants need Stormlight to Surgebind, but opening a Perpendicularity doesn't seem to be Surgebinding per se. Note that even with Stormlight ceasing to exist, Ishar could send the souls of the Heralds into the Spiritual Realm using some other source of Investiture.
  2. For all of his defenders: Brandon himself is on record as saying the book could have used another editing pass, for which there simply was not time. (Paraphrase.) It isn't the worst book written. It isn't even the worst Brandon Sanderson book. It's just (for me and some others) the weakest book in the Stormlight Archive. And as a student of stories (e. g. a person who reads lots of stories), I think it has to be. "Middle book syndrome" is a well-known problem for trilogies, so "book five of a decology" is part of the issue for WaT: it's the end of Part One of the SA, so it has to have a conclusion, but also it's the middle of the SA, so Our Heroes have to still be in deep trouble for it to be a story.
  3. I suspect only Ishar after the death of Tanavast and the breaking of the Oathpact could do that. Remember, the Stormfather kept being surpised by what Ishar could do in his conflict with Dalinar--the Oathpact and Honor had limited him for thousands of years.
  4. Koloss (Era 1) are only easy to replace if you have an unlimited supply of humans to put the spikes in. Also, hemalurgy is hard, you have to place each spike precisely, twice, IIRC (once in a victim to charge it, once in a second victim to use it).
  5. An aluminum box prevents most Invested detection, e. g. SPOILERS FOR THE STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE
  6. That's why I wrote that the Shard forces him.
  7. I wonder if Brandon has seen the Pulse movies, in which red tape can trap or exclude ghosts.
  8. Crackpot theory of the week: Discord will come in the Space Age, as Sazed loses control of Harmony. It's Hoid. Hoid is the Vessel. Who has brought more discord to the Cosmere than our provocateur? Hoid resists, but the dishard forces him, just to make it worse.
  9. I suspect that Lift was Fourth Ideal or nearly there by RoW. She had been Third Ideal for a while. We saw that Teft was able to summon his Shardblade even before taking the Oath, because he was close.
  10. Bondsmithing is older than the Oaths. He wouldn't be a Herald or Radiant, necessarily. I mean, Bondsmiths are all about Connection, and so is Adolin. That said, I still want him to take up the dishard of Retribution and become Justice, the positive spin on those same Shards combined. I can't see how it will happen because SPOILERS FOR ISLES OF THE EMBERDARK
  11. The giant magical serpent is centuries in the future of Wind and Truth, though.
  12. I'm pretty sure of Syl-godspren, for a number of reasons. One more: Brandon loves foreshadowing. How hard did he hit "setting up an heir" waaaaay back?
  13. I haven't actually read the WoB, but I stand by saying it reads like a discarded draft ... and it is, just a draft from much more recently.
  14. There's a reason the Shardcasters call Kaladin "John Stormlight".
  15. This sounds to me (and apparently to @Frustration) like a discarded draft of what became Mistborn, not something canon. It's something like Dragonsteel Prime, which Brandon mined for ideas used in later books (the Shattered Plains from DP for the Stormlight Archive, the mists from this one for Mistborn, bits of the Dead from this for Shades).
  16. Iron is the Pulling metal, Steel is Pushing. (This is true in artifabrianism, too.) Spren do have the surges. Even a non-sapient windspren can make things stick together, so they have the Lashings (or at least one of them). Presumably a far more Invested Honorspren could Lash better than a windspren, and an enormously powerful Radiant spren in the Physical Realm could do it better than a "regular" spren ... and Syl, who is now a megaspren like the Stormfather is a demigod figure. (Support: storms in her eyes, as seen by Kaladin.) It won't be obvious even to her until she returns to the Physical. Note that this makes Kaladin a Fifth Ideal Windrunner, the Herald of Kings, and also a Bondsmith. Resonances, anyone?
  17. You don't want to give your hypothetical Lurcher feruchemical steel (which is what I think you'd need to use allomancy at high speed)? The opposite of a Crasher like Wax, burning iron but storing in steel.
  18. Reaction time good enough to time bullets? Wax can't do that and he's a near Savant with Pushing.
  19. If I ever get to ask Brandon a question, it will be, "Does Taravangian feel stupid after his confrontation with Dalinar, when he realizes he could have Unmade the Stormfather and thus turned Tanner into his perpetual servant, and created an enormously powerful Unmade that (being mostly Honor) would nicely counterbalance Ba-Ado-Mishram?"
  20. Soulcasters can make aluminum as easily as other normal metals, so ... No.
  21. I believe that non-Enlightened Truthwatchers can create illusions like a Lightweaver.
  22. 16 hemalurgic spikes would probably destroy a soul. Even old Inquisitors seem to have had far fewer. (Now, medallions ....)
  23. Yes. Yet Brandon sometimes says all Investiture is now associated with a Shard. Which WoB would you prefer to believe?
  24. Brandon's comments there seem to contradict what we read in Wind and Truth. The Night, the Wind and the Stone predate the Shattering. Unless ... maybe they were non-sapient before Adonalsium's death?
