Subversion nodded. "I'll refrain from testing it. So, now that you're here, what are your goals?" "Very well!" Subversion said cheerily. "I will do my best to make certain that Straeon will not be harmed by your completion of my favor. As for bodily harm to you... well, the favor I ask may be dangerous for you, but harm to you will not be implicitly necessary as part of the task. As for the legality... well, I must confess that I have no idea what makes something 'super illegal', so... yeah."- 111821 replies

"If I told you that, it would spoil the fun!" Subversion held the necklace out tantalizingly. "All you have to do to operate it is envision the location you want to be at, and it will take you there. That will work across dimensions, but if you want to travel with a group, you tap the gemstone and speak the name of a world and, and it will open a portal. If you ask nicely, I may even throw in an informational pamphlet that will give you a list of somewhat important worlds." "So you're somewhat like a Narrator, but weaker?" Subversion asked. "I wonder if you're more or less vulnerable to Narration than an average character."- 111821 replies

"How interesting!" Subversion squinted, trying to read the words that made up Blank Page. "Are the words your thoughts? Or just random? Or are they your core personality attributes?" "Oh, no. The Doors are a separate Thread. There are places where you can move between worlds freely, portals and the like. Or I can give you a magic device that will allow you to move between them freely." Subversion held up a golden necklace. "It's yours, if you promise to do me a favor later."- 111821 replies

Unintelligible met her eyes and grinned. "Of course." He started to say something, then paused, staring into Sequence's eyes. He coughed, breaking his gaze from hers. "Um, would you like to come interrogate the witherabbit with me?" The pair of adventurers passed through the doorway and ended up at the beginning of a massive multistory walkway populated by inactive escalators, empty kiosks, and boarded up shops. It was rather dark. There was a large skylight running the length of the hallway, but someone had painted over it for some reason or other. In fact, considering the amount of times the words "Run now before it's too late!", "The gift is a lie!", "No fear, no life!" and other similarly gloomy and terrifying messages had been graffitied on the walls, there had been a lot of painters in here at some point (they all seemed to favor the same reddish-brown paint color, too). Lyric was unaffected by all of these obvious red flags. He took in the sight with an awed expression. "Wow! This place is very different from the forest!" He squinted, trying to look further down the walkway. "Say, I don't think I asked this, but do you have a soul? Being a mechanical man, and all." It was lucky for Rebus that he hadn't made that wager, for the battery entered the vault in an unembezzled and timely manner, after which the drone installed it in a new security module Malevolence was in the process of constructing. It wouldn't do for Malevolence to be caught lying to his temporary allies, after all. Besides, where else would an Ennulling battery be put to better use than in the vault built to contain the most dangerous secret in the entirety of TLT? As if summoned by the mention of her name, Subversion appeared. "What, you want to leave TLT already? But you just got here." Subversion appeared. "Hello! Are you a literal blank page, or is that just your name?"- 111821 replies

"Thank you Cricket. Oh, and good luck with your duel." The drone flew off with a barely audible "you'll need it." He indeed could not see Subversion, but Ryver did get the impression that she was watching from somewhere, laughing at him.- 111821 replies

"Oh, no need." The drone unfolded, revealing a head-sized metal ball. "This drone carries a battery. I've made some upgrades; it should be more effective than the last one at holding a charge." "Indeed!" Subversion reappeared. "Behold." She grabbed Ryver's arm. Suddenly, they were standing on a cloud in a world with green skies filled with flocks of dragons. "This isn't a skill exclusive to Narrators either. Cricket could do it even before awakening his Ennulling powers. I'm sure if you looked hard enough, there would be artifacts capable of such things." An instant later, Ryver was back at the party, Subversion nowhere to be seen.- 111821 replies

"...You're right." Unintelligible mumbled. "I'm sorry to worry you." He glanced at the cage, and some of the color returned to his face. "Right! The cure! If anything, what you just did provides further evidence that you can be cured! It was possible to draw out the darkness in my wound. Of course, such a crude method probably wouldn't work for your injury, but if there was someone who had a fine control over Chaotic Darkness, they could probably extract it from you without killing you!" He gestured to the rabbit. "Someone strong enough to control an army of wither-rabbits, someone they fear more than anyone else-perhaps the only person they fear." "Perhaps..." Lyric pointed. "Look! There's a door!" as he spoke, a battered neon light flickered to dim life over the door. It seemed to an advertisement promoting the mall. "Home of the great Ortithox the sage. All who enter here shall never again know fear." "See?" Lyric said. "I told you! He might still be here!" He set off at a brisk walk towards the mall. Jim was rather concerned, but he followed their guide without comment. -- A drone flew up to Cricket, interrupting his conversation with Atlas. "Cricket, there's been a slight security breach at the vault," Malevolence's voice crackled. "and I'm worried about our countermeasures against Narration. Since you're not going to be using your powers in this fight with Rebus, would you consider charging up another one of battery? I want to be able to completely nullify Rebus's Narration if he breaks into the vault, and I'm not certain rerouting power from the main Nullifying system is a good idea." @TwinStorm- 111821 replies

"I'm Subversion, a Narrator. And yes, I'll take tea." the teacup disappeared from Ryver's hand and appeared in Subversion's. She took a sip delicately. "Delicious. Well, it was nice meeting you Ryver. I do hope you have a good time here." She wandered off.- 111821 replies

"I know I'm not invincible." Unintelligible muttered petulantly. "But it was just a tiny scratch! I've survived far worse injuries." He stood up shakily, face still grey. "Although... admittedly those wounds were not from a wither-rabbit." On Ryver's way over, Subversion appeared in front of him. She had finally decided to show up at the party, definitely because so many important people were there and definitely not because with a certain Author being active again, there was a chance that someone in particular might show up as well. Not that this was relevant to Ryver, since he'd never met Subversion before and so neither he nor his Author would have any context for the nonsensical ramblings of the previous sentence, even if Ryver had been capable of knowing of its existence. Indeed, all Ryver knew was that a woman with black hair and silver eyes had appeared in front of him, wearing a pure black dress. She stared at him imperiously. "Hello Ryver. Welcome to the Thread. Before you speak to Cricket, allow me to inform you that he is not actually affiliated with the Ennuller organization, so his insight into their rules will be limited."- 111821 replies

"No clue." Malevolence replied, assuming Bacon had been talking to him. "Rebus may have infected it somehow. I'm running scans now to figure out what exactly is wrong with it." The darkness flowed out into the syringe. Unintelligible stiffened, then relaxed as the last of the darkness flowed into the syringe, leaving behind a nasty-looking, but normal wound. "Thanks." Unintelligible took a deep breath, then opened his eyes and smiled at Sequence. "I... guess that was a rather serious injury."- 111821 replies

Lyric inspected the mall. "You know, it sounded like a much nicer place when the guru described it to me." Malevolence frowned, ordering some more extensive scans of the hat and opening an intercom to the vault. "Bacon, check your hat. It might be contaminated with some sort of spyware." @xinoehp512 The smoke curled into the beaker more strongly, but the darkness within the wound didn't lighten. "Its... bearable." Unintelligible said hoarsely. "Don't think it's working." He closed his eyes. "Try a needle." Jim blinked, shielding his eyes from the light. "...What is this place?"- 111821 replies

Unintelligible flinched slightly as Sequence spread the salve, face tightening. The darkness in the wound recoiled from the salve, smoke rising more fiercely from the wound and curling ever so slightly towards the beaker. "It... started... hurting." Unintelligible said through clenched teeth. His face was graying rapidly, and hs knuckles were white on the armrests of his chair. Jim nodded resignedly. "All right. Let's go see this light." He squinted into the light, and his face seemed ever so slightly dimmer than those of the others in the reflected light.- 111821 replies

Jim scribbled on his clipboard, then pulled a form off of it. "I'll see if I can't send someone to isolate the infected people. In the meantime, we should head to the source of the infection." He dropped the form, and it vanished promptly. "Well Pyk, where is the source? We had best be on our way quickly, before your condition worsens." @Hawks@Kansas Stormcursed "Very well! Let us depart!" Lyric started walking, and began singing as he did. "Farewell mighty forest, home for years untold. I take my leave now, journeying far and wiiiiiide. With my mechanical friend I now wander, journeying far and wiiiiide! *three hours later* "And here we are at long last, the first of our many destinations, a mall so large and taaaall! The first stop of many, in our journey far and wiiiiiiiiiiide!" Lyric finally stopped singing as they entered the parking lot of the mall. "Behold! The mall of wonders! The living place of the holiest of monks!" The mall in question was a decaying ruin. the parking lot was empty and desolate, and a small forest was growing through the cracks in the concrete. The main structure was covered in vines, graffiti, and a few flickering neon signs. Malevolence frowned. What is his game here? He recalibrated the alarms. Now the system would react to any change in the Bacon-ness, so there would be no impersonating Bacon to sneak into the vault, or removing Bacon from the vault in order to take the paper from him.- 111821 replies

“Only three infected people besides you two?” Jim sighed in relief. “That’s containable. Where are they all?” “Then we shall walk!” Lyric said. “It’ll take about three hours from here.” Malevolence noticed this and frowned. “Attacking the vault already? This was a terrible plan.”- 111821 replies

"I have been truthful." Jim said in a carefully not-exasperated tone. "You can track this disease? That's helpful." Why didn't they just say so earlier? "Ask your AI if a total shutdown would halt the disease's progression." Jim was taken aback. "Oh. Um, thank you." He glanced down at his clipboard. "I mean, it is perfectly alright. "Well what do you WANT me to do?" Jim snapped his clipboard in two, sending the paper on it scattering to the wind. "You show up with an unknown magical disease that can infect uninfectable people and is almost certainly lethal, then want me to help you when I have no information about where it comes from, how it functions, how it spreads, or even if it's curable? I'm risking infection and a terrible death just by standing here!" He threw his shattered clipboard to the ground and stomped on it. "And now you're insulting my intelligence? Well STORM YOU! I hope you DIE PAINFULLY without my help." He vanished in an angry burst of darkness. Jim broke out of this happy daydream and sighed, scribbling something down on a form with only slightly more force than was strictly necessary. "I apologize for my intellectual inadequacy. I heartily welcome your feedback in improving my quality of service. Please, tell me. How specifically would you like me to stop being an idiot?"- 111821 replies
