I think it's a reasonable theory, but I don't think it's by any means confirmation. I think even under the "mercy kill" idea there's further options, such as Mercy fighting alongside Ambition and only turning on them after Odium had already dealt the mortal blow and they were doing the Shardic equivalent of bleeding out (which would be in some ways more worrying than them just siding with Odium, because it means even their allies aren't safe). Or perhaps "mercy kill" is the wrong tree and instead Harmony believes Mercy would, while not siding with Odium, not allow anyone to kill Rayse or Splinter Odium because they would be pushed towards offering him mercy. So yeah, I don't think it's a confirmation by any stretch.

Afaik, this is unconfirmed. We don't know what the sides in the Threnodite conflict were, do we? I'd say the pattern suggests Ambition and Mercy vs Odium, but this is just speculation on my part.

Personally, I suspect they could. The Heavenly Ones and Windrunners seem to have basically identical Gravitation powers, as do the Masked Ones and the Lightweavers with Illumination, and the Flowing Ones and the Edgedancers with Abrasion. And the Heavenly Ones prove that the Fused are indeed capable of using their powers externally (while the Heavenly Ones don't Lash other things often, they do do so onscreen a couple times in Oathbringer), and the Windrunners prove Radiants can use their powers internally, so it doesn't seem like there's an actual restriction forcing Radiants to be external and Fused internal. It's just that the gemhearts let the Fused powers last indefinitely when used on themselves, so they focus on using things on themselves and have practiced to the point they can use them like second nature (the Heavenly Ones flowing through the air, for example, and the Deepest Ones moving themselves through stone slightly instead of walking). So I think at the very least a singer Radiant can probably theoretically do anything a Fused can do, though it might take more lifetimes of practice to master than they can get. I think for a human Radiant, they can theoretically do the same, but it's going to be too Light-intensive to keep up for long without having the infinite-lasting-in-gemheart trick.

(Sorry for the other message, hit submit too early accidentally) There's a lot of Death Rattles about this kind of thing, really. (Shameless plug for my own post a couple days ago on these)

Scadrian vs. Rosharan magic post RoW
LewsTherinTelescope replied to NameIess's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The question isn't whether Hemalurgy overall can do it (H-duralumin is "Steals Identity/Connection" iirc), but over whether aluminum specifically can. I doubt aluminum removes every Hemalurgic trait (this would likely require destroying literally the entire spiritweb), so the question is if a bond counts as a "power", or if aluminum Hemalurgy is just not particularly useful against Radiants. I'm leaning the latter, myself, as we've seen no indication aluminum removes Connection (while they don't have Radiants, they do clearly have a way to check if Connection is removed or not, since they worked out H-duralumin, so it's not unreasonable to think they would have noted such a thing being the case). Correct, he handwaved it, because there is no scientific explanation that fits all his criteria. But he explicitly stated that he is not changing density (at least not directly; I've got no clue if bone density would increase to compensate for the larger body or anything).- 1816 replies

Scadrian vs. Rosharan magic post RoW
LewsTherinTelescope replied to NameIess's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't really agree. RoW makes it clear it's a Connection issue, and we've seen nothing indicating H-aluminum affects that. I guess it's possible it could affect it, due to the spiritweb merging, but I'm feeling iffy on that for the moment.- 1816 replies

Feruchemical iron does not increase density. AoL 19, Wax explicitly says it does not increase density and he cannot become bulletproof: WoB where Brandon says there's not really a way to explain it scientifically, but it is not density: WoB that confirms that when Sazed says his density increases, it's a misunderstanding of what is actually occurring:- 1816 replies

I do not agree that that refers to the Ideals. The Ideals don't prevent Surgebinders from warring, they don't prevent Surgebinders from causing chaos, several of the order Ideals don't even really have a moral component at all as far as we know (most extreme example being the Lightweavers). Establishing an organization with rules and structure and forcing all of them to adhere to it, however, could do so. (This also raises the question of why he needed to threaten them into it, since as far as we know, Radiant bonds without Oaths seems to just be how it is, without a choice one way or the other.)

...huh. I really need to reread Words of Radiance, because I have no memory of that line. I'll need to reread the context.- 29 replies

Does Dalinar have living Shardplate?
LewsTherinTelescope replied to Ba-Ado-Fisherman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I mean, Shallan is kind of a weird case and we don't even know what Ideal she is yet, so I think using her as an example is probably not a good idea. -
Does Dalinar have living Shardplate?
LewsTherinTelescope replied to Ba-Ado-Fisherman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I definitely read this as implying the other way, personally. I read this as "he won't get Plate, so I can't use the same milestone to remember his Ideal". -
theory The Choice of Honor
LewsTherinTelescope replied to LewsTherinTelescope's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah, I do agree. I'm always hesitant to make theories about the "night will reign" Death Rattle for this reason, as all the theories I've seen (including this one) just don't feel like something Brandon. But I can't think of any reasonable interpretation of it that does feel like something he'd do, either....- 29 replies

I would agree there, yeah. Definitely lmao. I do think Ruin and Cultivation are the two it'd be most opposed to, because those are directly about modifying existing things while to me the name Invention implies more a focus on new things, but this is basically "white is more opposed to black than super dark grey", lol. Invention and Odium are probably very high on the "Preservation hates you" list, as is Whimsy. Though there's some like Honor, Dominion, and Autonomy that sound like they might combine decently with it ("decent" as in "compatible", not as in "nice to exist near" necessarily, lol).

The Stormfather only started making new honorspren pretty close in time to the False Desolation. Prior to that, Honor himself made them. OB 108: Rereading it, I was making a slight assumption, it's not explicitly stated there were not multiple batches, but the fact he made "only a handful" makes me doubtful.

Szeth's father was apparently "taught to kill" according to Szeth's interlude, and Szeth's refusal to even think about his family because it would sully them makes me think they're probably not Truthless. I highly doubt this particular part has lasted thousands of years, considering they tried to conquer the world a while back, using lots of cavalry and using the Honorblades (the latter part was I believe confirmed by WoB rather than text, but the Shin Invasions with cavalry are from the book).

For his first batch (the group including Syl), yeah, they "died" in the Recreance. Eventually, though, he ended up making ten more a while after the Recreance who went and made their own children.

I disagree on a couple fronts, tbh. I do not agree they are "almost opposite". They do oppose in certain cases, for sure, but they are nowhere near as opposed as, say, Ruin and Preservation. Channeled anger and passion toward a cause would imo fit, for one, as would the similar vibe of a sort of Vengeance or divine Wrath Shard. I do not think every combination of opposed Shards would give Harmony. It's not just that they are balanced, but specifically that when balanced a certain way (which seemingly is a way but not the only one), they give the concept of a harmonious cycle. Old things break, new things last. (I don't really get where the "together Ruin and Preservation can create" thing comes from, but Brandon sees it and it's important to the plot, which influences how a combination of Ruin and Preservation will turn out.) Honor and Odium is not likely to give anything remotely like that, though I could see it if you add Cultivation into the mix.

Honor's Death- Before or After?
