  1. Thanking wasing of doing of helping.
  2. Creationspren are confirmed by the songs to make artform I do not belive we have confirmation of anything else.
  3. What? How?
  4. I think it will take a few decades but that your method will take the better part of a century. First Vev is the surgeon not Pailah. Second the Wisdom seems to be designed for stone age people who would not much benefit from chemistry. Basic sanitation during surgery or just in general (like bathing) is a yes. I fail to see why the Heralds would include instructions for things that even if they knew how to do would be of no benefit to the people during or between the last desolations. It is also a bit hard to believe that Wisdom of limited/no use would be preserved over four millennia. Not at all. I am a bit more confident in what they would or would not tell people given that they have limited time to prepare instructions. Sanderson's second law excuse me Limitations > Powers. Remember why he got rid of saltrification? Having surges able to create the stuff needed to power surges is problematic. We have Khriss's descriptions. While not technically proven by direct observation they are by research done by the greatest cosmre scholar. I am inclined to believe her. Let me summarize my opinion like so. It only makes sense for Roshar to have that kind of knowledge of gemstones if they already are good enough to make gemstones. Scadrial is a different case and by comparing them you are making the fallacy of analogy.
  5. His argument is that this is what my argument boils down to. I disagree. At no point do we interact with any professional animal breeders so how exactly are we supposed to know what they do or do not do in regards to breeding for larger gemhearts. We do however interact with a large quantity of soldiers many of whom would benefit from explosives or plastics that are mysteriously absent if Rosharans have the capacity to create them. Your methods of producing synthetic gemstones will not work in the intimidate future. A bit wordy but I think a necessary alteration. The Wisdom of the Heralds likely does not include instructions for building gemstones. They were made for compensation by stone age people. The Heralds themselves are currently a bit difficult to interview for my latest article in The Scientific Rosharan. I do not think then any surge will ever allow the creation of gemstones as per sanderson's first law. You might be able to mine them with cohesion but that is about it. Division might work to examine the chemical makeup of gemstones if they have a way to actually understand what they got from it which I do not believe they do. Emeralds for example contain chromium and the first method for positively IDing that was not created until Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin in 1797(see its that easy to give a full googlable name). Hi. Welcome to our latest argument.
  6. We also don't see them not doing it when it would make sense to do so. I think that is key. At no point would breading better gremfiends(I think they are called) be in any way relevant or helpful. But she was not indicating that a Radiant can approach and even survive being close to a casmfiend with considerable less danger(this is two untrained Radiants with limited stormlight or realy just one) we now have access to more. Their are more flammable substances as well. Ones that would produce less smoke and as such be safer for the soldiers while still destroying the city. I was stating an opinion here as an opinion.
  7. He was not ready for a relationship with Tarah and he did not go for Shalladin the way the fans did. He decided that Shallan had something good going with Adolin and messing it up was silly.
  8. Welcome. I believe that their is a thread that someone started for this somewhere.
  9. No. We know that they are breeding them and so they are probably breeding them for larger gemstones if they can be bread in such a way. Considering that we only have about two lines in the entirety of the stormlight archive about them and that the knowledge would not be of much use one way or another in any practical way(it takes generations to breed animals for a significant change in population quality). Considering the majority of those impossibilities were solved in the next few chapters(getting Shallan onto the plains and having her examine a crystallizes) I am convinced that such a statement was hyperbole. Except they soulcast the oil while there and while having a soulcaster that could make oil and plantmater which as I said can make a variety of more explosive substances if you have the chemical knowledge. I think your current methodology is impossible not that the revolution could not happen. Considering that they have a large population, several decent centers of learning, the ability to make food fairly cheaply a worldwide communications network, and a verity of useful magical processes that have yet to be explored I think that they are actually in a pretty good place for one to happen.
  10. Not realy. I meant that it feels like a lack of emotion. Humans are emotional beings not Vulcans. They realy can't separate themselves from their feelings as their is no difference in the mind between a purely cognitive and an deeply emotional analysis. This is why I do not think Jasnah's goal of creating an objective history is possible. Even the most thoughtful and objective individuals do have feelings and those feelings do bias them no matter what they do. When humans "stop feeling" they often do impulsive dangerous or hateful things in order to try and feel again. This is the kind of hate that is defiantly not defined as passion and I do not realy think of as an emotion.
  11. Pushed back again...
  12. It makes some sense in a lot of movies when you have limited time and dialogue but even their it is fine to include some nonessential character development. It is also supposed to be a reminder. He can't win as a warrior anymore he has to figure out a better way.
  13. It clearly does not extend to the point where they can easily synthesize gemstones or they would already be doing it. As such they need a new method for doing it. As such they would be creating a new method. “All I’m saying,” Shallan continued, “is that it’s worth thinking about and studying. What would it be like if you could start raising chasmfiends, growing them to juveniles in batches like men raise chulls?" Ebook so no page number sorry. Yes but Occam's razor. The simplest explanation for why we have not seen something that would be eminently useful in the hands of people in a situation with the means to acquire it is that it does not exist. If they had any explosive easily producible beyond oil they would have used it at the Rift. Remember Dalinar was going for as much destruction as easily as possible and wanted to burn the city to the ground. Plenty of oil or plant based explosives exist but he did not use them. Even if I can't prove they do not exist I can still find evidence that they do not. Please don't take this the wrong way but at this point I am not sure that either of us are being reasonable. I think the best thing to do at this point would be to call for outside arbitration if we actually want to settle the debate. Verification of a claim by an independent authority is often a good demonstration that your thinking is wrong.
  14. I think the point might be that things on Roshar grow faster and healthier due to Cultivation's residency there without any direct action from the shard herself.

    Explosive shells are problematic.
  16. How is it exaggerating to say that I think it easier to breed things then it is to make new systems of knowledge? Every earth civilization bread animals in some capacity. It took a global civilization to figure out how to synthesize gemstones. Which is easier it terms of thought if not planning, resources and management? We see Shallan talk about raising Chull batches in her date with Adolin WoR chapter 49. She also makes the suggestion that raising casmfiend batches is possible and Adolin does not take this suggestion as ridiculous. If we must be pedantic we can say that we have deduced that their knowledge of chemistry is less then ours. Otherwise I am wondering about the lack of plastics(and that is just to start with). This is actually extrapolation. A necessary exercise when trying to deduce from a limited amount of information clearly not designed for the purpose of conveying the messages we are looking for. Pat's Fantasy Hotlist Interview (May 25, 2010) #7 Share Copy Patrick Regarding The Way of Kings, given the fact that the synopsis doesn't shed much light on what the tale is about, what can you tell us about the book and the rest of the Stormlight Archive sequence? You know, a little something to whet your fans' appetite! Brandon Sanderson I'm actually preparing a blog post on this. I've had a very tough time describing The Way of Kings. I've been working on this book for many, many years. Parts of it I can trace back 15, 17 years ago to my very early days as an aspiring writer in my teens. Beyond that, I'm planning a very large story that spans many books. So what this book is and means to me is a lot more extensive than with other books I've worked on. Because of that it's really defied my ability to describe it. What can they expect? Well, it's about the length of Lord of Chaos. It will be much more epic and larger in scope than anything I have published so far on my own. There's a whole lot more worldbuilding to it—I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 200,000 words of worldbuilding notes, scattered across several documents, that I'm now coalescing into a wiki. I don't know that this is new information, but the story of the Stormlight Archive revolves around ten orders of knights, each of whom had their own magics and abilities, who fell thousands of years ago for reasons no one understands. Some say they betrayed mankind, others say they were destroyed, others say they were charlatans all along. The Stormlight Archive deals with the history of these knights, discovering what happened to them. It also deals, perhaps, with their redemption. Another big theme has to do with the onset of a magical industrial revolution, so to speak. Think of this as Renaissance-era technology where people are discovering how to harness magic and use it in practical ways. I've always wanted to do a story about the dawning of something like the Age of Legends in the Wheel of Time books.
  17. I did not say they have no knowledge of geology. I know that they forge and that they mine I was making a comparison. I think that the concept of breading animals is simpler then the concept of inventing entirely new ways of thinking about the universe. We know that Rosharans breed animals axhounds, chulls, and horses for example(I do not think looking up a WoB will be necessary to prove that). We also know that Rosharans do have some knowledge of chemistry, geology, and physics and as you mentioned it is covered in an educated Rosharan's education. We do not know what this course of study entails(I for one would not let any doctor prior to the 19th century practice surgery on me as I would likely get infected and die). We also do know that their knowledge of chemistry is less then ours. The question then becomes how much less? We have seen no indication that they have any kind of explosive more portent then oil. If one existed I have a hard time believing that Dalinar, Kaladin, or Adolin would not have mentioned it by now. Explosives would not be hard to make for any competent chemist especially considering the high oxygen content of Roshar's atmosphere. The Chinese figured out gunpowder in the 11th century. Their would be plenty of civilian and military uses for it so the incentive you keep mentioning is there. The materials exist and are actually fairly easy to come by in nature yet the Rosharan chemist. I tried all three and got nothing relevant. Please find me a first name.
  18. I got you. Also why not just name it sheepbiter?
  19. I am confused.
  20. Not at all.
  21. You can just throw yourself in and that will stop it.
  22. Skyward Pre-Release AMA (Oct. 4, 2018) #14 Share Copy Stromeng In Oathbringer Cultivation calls Dalinar Son of Honor and Son of Odium. Why? Does he Connected to both Shards and technically can be a Vessel for Odium. Also, why Cultivation says it'd be good for her to have a part of Dalinar inside of her? Is it important? Brandon Sanderson This is partially RAFO territory, but let's just say that Cultivation takes the long view on someone--and to her, Dalinar represents both the the best and worst of both Honor and Odium.
  23. Still waiting for Kaladin to use storm powers.
  24. She also had the easiest job.
